I miss the compact smartphones. Very comfortable to hold. Despite the small battery, they performed just as well as the big ones. If I wanted a big screen, I'd get a tv
Also, a small phone has a place in one's pocket. It belongs there, like your keys. Today's monolith candybars make a lousy match for the other basics you have to carry around.
Needing a larger enthusiast market to get phones built to fit in human hands is like needing to expand a niche market so manufacturers start making shoes designed to fit human feet.

haha i have almost the same. 1st gen SE and 13 mini. i really hope apple releases a new mini every like 5 years or something. its not a big market, but people who want small phones really want nothing else.
For me the iPhone X,XS & 11pro’s 5.8inch size was just perfectly comfortable for carefree one hand use, even though my hands are larger than avg and I can easily use a 6.2inch phone one handed. The only issue I faced with smaller phones was the battery life when I was out and about
I think I found it out. When you're given an option of medium, large, and small phone, let's say 10% of people go for the small one. Then when you REMOVE the option for the small one, only about 1% of people will actually straight up go for the older small phones, and the rest will just go for the medium options; which grants the company more profit.
I think the big reason too is that most companies, looking at Apple and Samsung here, pack more features into their bigger phones, you got your Pro's and Ultra's, there's some FOMO and inferiority effect if you don't buy the biggest most expensive unless you just know it wouldn't suit your needs as a phone user of that caliber
Apple's base pro model has had nearly identical dimensions for 8 years in a row, ever since the X. And the feature set is also mostly the same as the Pro Max.
@@BMN_Prime it was much simpler than that for me when I bought my first large phone (Galaxy Note 2011), I really wanted a better multi media device - I wanted to watch UA-cam and movies on a bigger screen, take better photos and videos, I wanted to be able to use animated wallpapers on my home screen (seems silly now), and I noticed that Android phones had more functionality than my boring iPhone (4), mainly through watching MKBHD video recommendations, who was really one of very, very few tech content reviewers on UA-cam back then. It all just came out of me being really bored with the iPhone 4, just when the massive selling iPhone 5 was emerging. I was so fed up I researched my next phone in real detail and decided I needed a Galaxy Note...
I have used a Samsung Note and 2 versions of Ultras. When I switched to the S24, I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't miss the big screen and S-pen. In fact, I appreciate greatly the small dimensions and the lighter weight of the S24. It's sad that Samsung is going to scrap the base Galaxy S models in future releases.
The reason is that today everything is focused on content consumption (social media, multimedia, video games, etc.), which is taking up more and more of our time. That’s why the screen is prioritized above all else. Bad for people, but great for profits.
Not "mini" line, but a "compact" line. When some manufacturers use "mini" line there are a lot of compromises - even SoC is different, but uses "flagship" line-up (galaxy s mini). But a compact phone is different. It still uses the flagship SoC and non-significant compromises.
I can't tell you how long I've been looking for a small smartphone. These new large phones are so uncomfortable to have in my pockets and sometimes even restrict me from running
I have the iPhone 13 mini. I'm loving the small form factor, but in my opinion the mini only works if you're not a phone addict and have an iPad. The battery of the mini is too small for heavy use. So, light tasks on the iPhone away from home and media consumption on the iPad at home. For most people it's heavy use on the phone all day long; that's just not possible on the iPhone mini.
Thats why swappable batteries would be good Carry 1 extra battery for your phone So when its out of charge just swap it quickly Also you could kinda use your phone while charging other battery so the battery isnt a problem
Currently using an iPhone 13 Mini, which has the same footprint as my iPhone 7. Love the size, and it complements my iPad Mini very well. Would definitely recommend if someone’s happy with 2nd hand/refurbished/renewed. Thanks for the content.
@@owencooktech Went from the 7 to the XS to the 13 Mini. Loved my XS too, but the battery was shot, and I thought (wrongly) it was about to lose the latest iOS. Got my 13 Mini back in January this year - mint condition with 100% battery. Product Red too - awesome colour!
@@pug_63 Hi, im currently thinking to get 13 mini too, there are many secondhand unit being sold in my country, do you think the battery suffice for my usage ? @@prominentvoyage Try and get one with 100% battery, and maybe see if you can get a mag safe compatible battery to top it up. If I’m not on it too much, it lasts the day. Would recommend 👍
I think most of the Small phones don't sell well because of the pricing. They are a bit expensive. Like Zenohone 10 is still selling for $699. So if someone pays this amount of money for a small phone, they might get a bigger phone instead. It happened for the iPhone mini-series. They were expensive. So buyers could buy the regular iPhone 12 or 13 for $100 more. That's why the mini-series sold so poorly.
They should have repurposed iPhone minis as the new iPhone SE lineup. Since SE is for a small target market anyway, might as well give it for enthusiast demographic. Edit: Since the upcoming iPhone 17 lineup is all about thinness, might as well make the iPhone mini chassis a bit thicker to give better battery life, and shy it away from those who are looking for a premium model.
Easy solution for the smaller phones would be making them thicker to accommodate for hardware elements - battery, cameras and whatsnot - but we as stupid customers decided that we are ok with thinner than necessary phones. Who actually cares if your smartphone is 5 or 7 mm thick, make it 1cm if needed to pack all the premium features into the smaller factor
@@DraconicAux small screens not exactly what he categorised as such, I would want even smaller than that , plus add some buttons. I have my laptop for other purposes.
It’s funny, because in the iPhone 6-7 Era, I said man, if they had a full screen phone but this size, it would be perfect. Then the X came out, and I said “I love the X, but if they had the physical size of the 8 but full screen, it would be perfect” fast forward and the 12/13 mini came out, and it was the perfect size. However, it comprised so much from the Pro’s I couldn’t convince myself to get it. So I just stuck with the smaller size pro. I wish I could have had a pro mini. Apple just has no interest in it.
It's just upselling. Manufacturers don't want us to buy a small affordable smartphone, no they want us to buy a deluxe large model with a big profit margin. Same applies to televisions and cars. If you are like me, who owns a tablet and a desktop pc, then you really don't need a phone with a large screen. I love my iPhone 12 mini which fits in every pair of pants I own and I will use it until it dies. Absolutely no need to upgrade to something large.
I remember reading somewhere back around 2015ish that it was actually women who were more turned on to big phones than men, which helped drive the new market...
Fun fact: there are still some small phones that aren't exactly marketed as small, like the s23 or s24, those are nearly 6 inches, wich is the small of today (for comparison, the "small" zenfone 10 was 5,9", so there's not that much of a difference). With that said, i plan on upgrading to a zenfone 10 because of gimbal stabilization and a headphone port, (and it's soo pretyyyy)
@@zviriko6850 For me it lasts a full day with medium use, sure camera and games will suck most energy. For scrolling and videos it really gets me through the day, big improvement to my old Samsung S10e.

I'm using the Moto RAZR 50 Ultra and it's a great small pocketable phone that you can use perfectly easily one handed and it's a large phone when you want that too! Foldables ARE the new small phones.
i went from a pixel 3a to a samsung s24 ultra... i still have the 3a and it still works, it's just that the screen is a little cracked. i miss being able to use my phone one-handed. don't get me wrong though, the s24ultra is a brilliant phone, an all-rounder. i just wish there was a phone that had all the specs of an s24ultra that was under 6" at least.
The reason is that consumers are not entirely rational, bigger phones come more feature packed and are more expensive, which means people consider them higher value by default. Plus many consumers nowadays buy these online, where they can't really judge the feel in their hand. A centimeter or two in dimensions don't look as significant as a smaller battery (even if the small phone has lower power consumption) or lower Mpx count camera. So if people went to buy these in a physical store I am 100% sure smaller phones would still be at least somewhat popular.
I’ve owned an iPhone 8 Plus for four years and I remember when I upgraded from the 6, I felt like it was night and day difference with the screen size. I’m upgrading to a 15, have the order in for it and instead of going from 4” to 5.5” I’ll be going up to 6.1” which I actually would’ve felt fine with the same screen size but at least it shouldn’t be too crazy in terms of how much bigger it’ll be.
I love smaller phones. The 2013 Moto X was the perfect size with fantastic in-hand feel. The Pixel 3 didn't feel as good to hold but was still a great size. Now I'm stuck using my iPhone 13 mini until it dies and there are no small phone choices left.
everyone yelled that they wanted a small phone, yet nobody bought them, the Iphone 12 and 13 Mini only accounted for a measly 5% of the sales of their repective lineups, tells you all you need to know
The people who clamored for small phones are the smart ones who value practicality. Those people hold on to their phones as long as it suits their needs so manufacturers don't like them as much. They love the dumb gullible ones who easily get swayed by eye-catching new things.. Fortunately for the manufacturers, the vast majority of the population is composed of dumb gullible consumers.
Well, I can understand bigger sizes(that's good to watch content, but hard to type), amoled screens(that looks superior at first glance, but has a inferior lifespan), or even "virtual" proximity sensors(for the sake of reduced bezels). However no headphone jack is still a decision I couldn't understand, especially for flagships.
Small phones demand less computing cycles to run (smaller screen means lower resolution, meaning lower GPU strain), so less consumption from the SoC. Smaller screen also means smaller backlight (for LCD) or less pixels to power (OLED), which also translates into less consumption. How much less? If 720p is acceptable on a 4.5" screen, but lower than 1080p is not on a >5.5" screen, you practically already have a 2x reduction in power consumption just because the number of pixels is that much smaller. Apply that to the SoC as well (2x less pixels means 2x less processing) and you get a phone with a 2700 mAh battery that can power it for 2-3 days (12h of SoT). You won't get that on a large "phone" (phablet).
@@ToniML200 On top of all of that, processors are getting more efficient. The newest processors only need down to half as much power for the same performance that top processors from 2 years ago managed. It'll only get better, battery life is not an excuse.

I mostly need my phone to be a GPS, IM, Banking and for its primary function of as a phone. As far as i'm concerned, large phones are just pointless unless you're really into social media, which i guess is a given for younger generations.
The biggest reason in my opinion of why the mini failed as it came as a lower price variation of the iphone 12 / 13 AKA. advertising it as a cheaper more affordable version of the iphone It should become between the iphone 13 qnd 13 pro Offer the pro features for cheaper price and small form factor If the iphone is 800 and the pro is 1000 it should be the same as the normal but with pro features Or just a bit more expensive It shouldn't also be named mini it could be S So iphone 13s I hate big phones when their aspect ratio is longer Soon i will be using a stick instead of a phone Just make the phone wider it will offer more usable space and still you could reach it with your hand
I switched from a Galaxy S20 FE (6,4 inch) to an Unihertz Jelly Star (3 inch) and ordered a Unihertz Jelly Max (5 inch). i read it on r/dumbphones r/smallphones and r/unihertz ;-)
Cheaper phones were more reliably smaller. Now even the cheapest phones are much larger than the flagship models, while having a lower resolution than the the previous models in the same line. I'd rather use metric here but imagine if a 2019 model of a budget phone line had a 5.5in 1080p screen and then the 2024 model in the same series has a 7in 720p screen. It's ridiculous! 😭
Additionally, needing a larger enthusiast market to get phones built to fit in human hands is like needing to expand a niche market so manufacturers start making shoes designed to fit human feet.
Small phones aren't dead. Just underappreciated. Still it wouldn't kill for the smartphone realm to have at least more one handable smartphones. Xperia 10 and 5 series, Xiaomi 14, Pixel 8 and 9s, iPhone 16 and 16 Pro and Samsung S24 is few of the only smartphones with under 6.4 inch display which I'd argue is the perfect one-handable phones. It also won't kill if the smartphone doesn't weigh like a brick.
For those who still want a small phone there is still one actively made by a big company. although it's marketed as the largest phone in your pocket: the samsung galaxy fold. The fold's outer cover is around the size of the original iphone SE 2016, which to me is a true handheld small phone. It only seems small because we are so used to large phone. I can stretch my thumb across the screen and feel no strain on my hands. It's a marvel of engineering that can be a small phone and ipad mini in one that warrants its 4 digit price tag. However, people will sell the phone with the inner display broken for less than $200. It's an amazing small phone i stumbled on by accident.
I have small hands, yet I always prefer a larger phone. There are features on flagship phones that let me use them in one-handed mode which takes some getting used to but doesn't need me to commit to a permanently smaller screen. Phones are also long-term investments so people would rather get the better value phones
There are quite a few small phones available today. I'd consider anything around 150x70mm to be sufficiently compact. Apple, samsung, google, motorola, xiaomi, etc. all have current compact devices. Not a lot of people are buying them. Most have really high price tags, they overheat easier due to the small form factor, and battery life is worse. Battery capacity in the long run is my main concern. With manufacturers offering 5+ years of software support I doubt many of the small devices' batteries will survive the support period. I'd prefer a bigger phone to having to charge every day, or more than once per day.

Man just like you Owen I've got pretty big hands and it can be hard to find devices that actually comfortable to use. But till date, one of the best device I've held has got to be the LG v35 thinq, crazy how it's considered small in today's sense tho. I feel it's possible for companies to make smaller phones with good internals like zenphone and lg did, but well i guess it's just what's popular. It's still sad tho. I really miss the lg.
The Vivo x200 pro mini might be something, just looking at the specs on paper, seems unreal. Still not going above 6.5 for a phone, I would rather carry a tablet.
I love my S23 Ultra. I got it for the big screen actually. I watch many movies and videos on the go so that's why I like it. I have big hands so it's not much of an issue to me, but I can see how it would be for people with smaller hands.
Yeah everyone has a different perspective yknow? It's interesting cause the small phone enthusiast is definitely the minority, despite all of the passionate comments here.
Yeah I don't measure by screen size for the most part. I used device height. Most phones are the same aspect ratio so width is the same across similar height devices. However, screen size is different because each phone has different bezels, form factor ect.
yeah i agree the objective measure of compactness is the width bc thats the dimension that affects the feel in the hand the most. and anything between 70 and 72mm is compact. anything less is "mini" which is now extinct.
hot take: people that are in the market for small phones, don't use these devices much. zenfone and mini-iphone failed because they put flagship specs in a small phone, instead of making an affordable option for people who don't use their phones that much.

Great video but small phones aren't dead. People freaked out about how small the Asus zenfone 10 was with its ~6" display, despite it being .5mm smaller than the s24. Small screen with big bezels does not equal small phone. And with the s25 tipped to be even smaller despite having a big display small phones with great internals are still here

So, light tasks on the iPhone away from home and media consumption on the iPad at home. For most people it's heavy use on the phone all day long; that's just not possible on the iPhone mini.
Thats why swappable batteries would be good
Carry 1 extra battery for your phone
So when its out of charge just swap it quickly
Also you could kinda use your phone while charging other battery so the battery isnt a problem
Tbh thats why i bought it right after it became available. It worked, i don’t waste my time on dumb social media that much
Currently using an iPhone 13 Mini, which has the same footprint as my iPhone 7. Love the size, and it complements my iPad Mini very well. Would definitely recommend if someone’s happy with 2nd hand/refurbished/renewed.

@@PierIsABaraReader the new iPhone SE is supposed to come out soon. Keep an eye out.
@@owencooktech All the information coming out so far is showing it as a 6 inch phone. 😢
THIS I'll gladly take a phone that's slightly thicker in exchange for it being a bit shorter lengthwise.
Small screens won't make you dumb.
And big screens will? Both will display the same brain rot content lol

@@Kevin-mx4vm oh I do. I think the tech is here now where a mini could have pro camera.
Absolutely no need to upgrade to something large.

i went from a pixel 3a to a samsung s24 ultra... i still have the 3a and it still works, it's just that the screen is a little cracked. i miss being able to use my phone one-handed. don't get me wrong though, the s24ultra is a brilliant phone, an all-rounder. i just wish there was a phone that had all the specs of an s24ultra that was under 6" at least.
"consumers are not entirely rational" has me rolling. I agree, we aren't rational machines. That nuance helps our world work.
Yeah it's a slightly larger phone with a much bigger screen.
I love smaller phones. The 2013 Moto X was the perfect size with fantastic in-hand feel. The Pixel 3 didn't feel as good to hold but was still a great size. Now I'm stuck using my iPhone 13 mini until it dies and there are no small phone choices left.
dude great phone
everyone yelled that they wanted a small phone, yet nobody bought them, the Iphone 12 and 13 Mini only accounted for a measly 5% of the sales of their repective lineups, tells you all you need to know
Yeah pretty much. Despite a loud enthusiastic market, it wasn't enough buying power to keep the form factor in production.
The problem with the mini was marketing. It being smaller next to the 12 made it seem “inferior”.
Yeah dude, it's wild how the headphone jack became obsolete so quickly.
Small phones have smaller batteries, making it not an option anymore for high and even medium usage today.
ASus zenfome 10 is a small phone (5.9inch) and have 5000 mAH, sony X10 VI (5.9inch) have 5000mAH :v

The biggest reason in my opinion of why the mini failed as it came as a lower price variation of the iphone 12 / 13
AKA. advertising it as a cheaper more affordable version of the iphone
It should become between the iphone 13 qnd 13 pro
Offer the pro features for cheaper price and small form factor
If the iphone is 800 and the pro is 1000 it should be the same as the normal but with pro features
Or just a bit more expensive
It shouldn't also be named mini it could be S
So iphone 13s
I hate big phones when their aspect ratio is longer
Soon i will be using a stick instead of a phone
Just make the phone wider it will offer more usable space and still you could reach it with your hand
I switched from a Galaxy S20 FE (6,4 inch) to an Unihertz Jelly Star (3 inch) and ordered a Unihertz Jelly Max (5 inch). i read it on r/dumbphones r/smallphones and r/unihertz ;-)
Dude the unihertz line seems so sick!
Yeah it's up to you honestly. Not everyone wants a small phone but we want the option yk?
There are quite a few small phones available today. I'd consider anything around 150x70mm to be sufficiently compact. Apple, samsung, google, motorola, xiaomi, etc. all have current compact devices. Not a lot of people are buying them. Most have really high price tags, they overheat easier due to the small form factor, and battery life is worse. Battery capacity in the long run is my main concern. With manufacturers offering 5+ years of software support I doubt many of the small devices' batteries will survive the support period. I'd prefer a bigger phone to having to charge every day, or more than once per day.
yeah, like i said though, its alot less than it used to be. dedicated small phones virtually don't exist. Just smaller versions of bigger flagships.
the size of the iPhone X was perfect! I miss this Phone

Screen sizes arent a great way to measure phone sizes.
The width is better since thats how you'd hold the phone in potrait.
I'd say anything
Yeah I don't measure by screen size for the most part. I used device height. Most phones are the same aspect ratio so width is the same across similar height devices. However, screen size is different because each phone has different bezels, form factor ect.
yeah i agree the objective measure of compactness is the width bc thats the dimension that affects the feel in the hand the most. and anything between 70 and 72mm is compact. anything less is "mini" which is now extinct.
