      the day will soon come when these kinds of devices will have small llm's onboard like pixel phones do, and they won't require any internet connection at all for surprisingly good ai chat interactions. the manufacturers will for sure give them wifi for updates and things like music, googling, the weather, and other features, but if the wifi goes out, you'll still be able to chat with a personalized, intelligent little chatbot with a personality

      @@CommonTater100 All evidence points to the opposite of this being true. Manufacturers WANT everything connecting back to their cloud, they have every incentive to NOT do what you just said and that's obvious in the move of virtually all products becoming internet connected, subscriptions, client/server based, even when there's no functional purpose for them to do so.
      TL:DR - No. Probably not.

A good example is what Amazon Prime did to it's a wonderful life. They removed once the most important scenes of the whole movie giving context for the rest or the story. • @zero11010
      @zero11010 18 днів тому +5

      @ I haven’t used one in several years. It was closer to having a giant iPad with procreate than just a whiteboard.
      Multiple rooms in different locations can create on the same board at the same time for a more fluid remote experience. Also, the board itself was shared across the call to each room.
      I’m a software engineer in Silicon Valley. The rooms with these were coveted. They allowed for better sharing and easier manipulation of data. People in another room in another state or another country could make adjustments to what the other room of people was doing.
      You’ve seen an artist use procreate? It’s like magic. You’ve seen a regular person use procreate? For them it’s like a child with a piece of paper and a pen.
      There was a learning curve. But, what it could do was impressive.
      I think it was the Jam board. I don’t know how many of these online digital whiteboard devices there were.
      You may want to look for videos here on UA-cam that break down capabilities. You’ll likely get more out of that.

      Ahh yeah, in my private school we used Promethean Boards, which some of the ones I did look up were discontinued in the mid 2010s. They were one heck of a cool projector, and I'm sure they had a ton of features. But considering they were close to $5,000+ dollars, and took up an entire wall to set up, I unfortunately could not get one. But using projects to project your inputs and outputs is still a cool idea if you ask me.

      The physical Jamboards were great, just one example - import your slide as a background then get your attendees (remote or in-person) to mark them up.
      We also used them as selfie-stations for events to grab a record of who attended. Take a selfie and then ask them to write a note against their picture with what they hope to achieve from the session.
      They were great for getting attendees on their feet and engaging with the course materials. Sorry to see it go.

    I hope society as a whole will learn at some point, that you should never get products, that only work connected to a cloud. Basically anything, that requires internet access should not be considered. This includes games, which demand an internet connection. Because just as physical products, when those servers go down, you can't play those games anymore, despite having all the necessary data and hardware.
    I tell you, one day there will be the first car, only working with an internet connection. And I believe it's gonna bomb hard.
    When Windows 10 will not be supported next year anymore, I will keep using it offline and move all my online business to Linux, not dealing with Microsoft and it's shenanigans anymore. For that, I am also glad I am working with an old offline Photoshop version, because sticking to Adobe's greed and their cloud requirements would not let me do that. Using cloud stuff doesn't only mean, services can seize any moment, but that the provider has full control over everything you can and can't do with the service. And who wants that? I am giving the finger to Microsoft and Adobe for their crap, and with older stuff I remain perfectly capable of doing what I want to do.

    That ICQ which died was just a service called ICQ. The original at some point merged with AIM. That ICQ is just the name after a relaunch after being bought, but with a completely different service.

    iTunes still exists on iOS.
    I buy - yes, buy - music from there all the time. Though I think purchasing music should be moved to the Music app like movies and shows on the TV app.

      California just passed a law where you can’t even call digital purchases “buying” anymore. It’s more accurately called leasing.
      When their servers go offline all your purchases are gone .. just like that therapy robot.
      I think the law was aimed at Steam video game purchases, but I believe it’s farther reaching.

    Re CDs being dead not quite, it's holding steady and in some countries sales have gone up, a reason is audio quality, streaming is still compressed audio but a CD is uncompressed. Take any CD with your favourite song and then compare with Spotify, Apple Music, UA-cam Music. CD audio is noticeably better.
    According to some metrics nearly half of CD buyers are in their mid 20s.
    Now DVDs, BluRays are a different story, they are going the way of the Dood.

    • @soxar64
      @soxar64 18 днів тому +5

      You say that as if people at large aren't spending like double that money in phones each year, 800 bucks for a toy like that is a steal in comparison (if it actually works as promised of course)

    • @bredtoplease
      @bredtoplease 18 днів тому +1

      Or maybe the parents just bought an $800 toy because it was advertised to help shy kids come out of their shell or go through difficult times, and they felt that if we can spend $1,000 on a new phone every other year, they can buy their kid a little robot pal who listens to them and gives them advice from the cloud.
