- Mel Tang grew up admiring Germany's finest in the 1990s, as his ownership of both a Porsche 993 Turbo and MB W124 E550 serve as testament. But his most elaborate ride is also his rarest: The early 2000s Dinan M5 was the most astonishing iteration of the E39 5-Series. Even though the Dinan team achieved wonders creating a stable, yet smooth, suspension, the phenomenal power output is the sedan's most memorable feature: A thoroughly upgraded and supercharged S62 V-8, generating -- in peak guise -- up to 620+ HP. The Dinan E39 was, in hindsight, a brilliant sendoff to an era of BMW design.

"...for me the modern classics are where it is driving in it's purest form." Well stated. From someone who daily drives an e36 325is winter package & weekends an e46 M3, I 100% agree. The modern classics (especially BMW) just have a beautiful balance of computer gadgetry that doesn't take away from the driving experience & analog components that just make the experience so raw and visceral, yet composed. I like the modern Bimmers, but there is just something so special about this era in their history. & What a gorgeous car.

how is the depreciation + unreliability + interior plastics?
depreciation - all cars have that. Unreliability - seriuosly??? It's not a family car/wagon, but still you'll find place even for them and back in trunk space for your luggage. Interrior plastics - all car brands going same way, and it's because of the price reason. Every manufacturer can make car with good material, but do you imagine how much would it cost?

@ElectricFederal why don't you post music credits for your videos? You have such a good music in your videos, but there's no way to find the artist. Such a disappointment. And what about music in the outro, wtf is that???
Dinan is over priced garbage. BMW and the word bullet proof do not go together. BMW makes the shittiest V8s out there. Leak oil and coolant like its colander. Control arm ball joints go bad after 20,000 miles, bushings in even less. Power steering hoses leak. Valve cover gaskets are junk quality. That S62 for example constantly had VANOS issues, as all BMWs did from 98-08. S62s had issues with their oil pumps. S54s had issues with the cam gear bolts loosening, vanos, and crank bearings failing. Again, M3, still suffered the control arm, power steering, and other failures/leaks/misc. How fun, can't even drive the damn car cause its broken 24/7.
my 2001 540i sportwagon (with over 250,000km) has been 100% reliable up until this spring (new transmission + cooling system, like 12k all in)
im the 3rd owner
the car was flawless for the 1st owner, and mostly for the second owner (he had some small things go wrong here and there}
and besides the tranny + cooling system going bust, it's been A+
and ill keep putting 12k into it every ~250,000km because it's such a good car
if bmw v8's are shit then how did the one in my car do 250,000k, mostly at higher speeds, without breaking?
PS my dad has a 2001 buick intrigue with 90,000km, and that car, with 1/2 the hp and torque is having tranny problems even though its 2 owners were both over 60 years of age............
i want a to convert a e39 wagon into a m5 and then after 3 years or so ill want this turbo set up

Twin Turbo eliminates most lag and isn't driven from a belt from the engine that saps power...

I agree...you can't compare this car to anything. This was in my opinion the most beautiful BMW ever produced, and one of the most beautiful cars ever produced. I would take this used over a brand new car if someone gave me a choice.

why do i think its an SIN ghastly SIN to modify M cars SPECIALLY visual modifications, i absolute love M cars (not so much the current ones) but every time i see a M3 or M5 with idk some random rims or body kit or some other b.s .. totally ruins for me, major turn off...

im 18 and i drive a 2001 525i its in mint condition looks brand new. i have a full time job i find it not hard at all to maintain my car!

You are comparing a M54 3.0 straight 6 that is almost standard in every bmw to a 4.9 s62 v8 which is stupidly expensive to upkeep

Wonderful looking car. Keeping it totally drive-able while extreme, and the owner keeping it that way make it a true legend. I'd love to try one someday!
Still one of the best BMWs around. Couple thing like the VANOS failing and plastic cooling pipes cracking kind of bother me with BMWs but once those issues are sorted these are beastly cars. It's amazing just how comfortable they are in daily driving yet they'll take a corner with ease.

Have an E39 M5 as well, even jet black. I couldn't agree with you more on the modern classics comment. Cars of this time period are really the purist of driving experience while still offering great amenities for a daily driver.
