bike racing is dangerous no matter who you are, top level world tour pro or weekend warrior and there's only so much safety caution and skill can provide... who knows what happened there. Something slippery on the road?
According to an interview with Skeljmose at the end of today's stage, the road had quite some bumps and they were going down really fast. Some managed to avoid the bumps, but because of the positions, a lot of them ( basically all important leaders) went to the ground.
Cycling, my favorite sport by far, is broken. Every season we all go on about the crashes. What changes will make this sport better for the athletes. Every crash adds to the growing list of failures by leaders in the sport to protect these great competitors--men and women alike. Sick of it all and sad for everyone injured. Thanks for covering this breaking news and keep at it!
That's why I don't like competition... and they are going crazy fast recently, even faster than in the doping years, also there are a lot of riders. A sign of the times, I guess...
What, governors on their bikes, closed courses with bumper-car barriers, hockey-pads? The UCI restricted the "toptube" and "arms on the bars - ttish" and all the riders whined, cried and complained. It's the riders, not the vommisaires,
@@francisramirez9534 get a clue! They will go as fast as they can, take any risk necessary and do whatever is allowed because their jobs depend on it. Any new regulation will be met with doubt, derision and protest - even when for their own good.

This is the other side of that coin! Nobody is to blame except the riders themselves. That CORNER was not dangerous - the SPEED at which they took it was dangerous. No blame for the organizers or commisaires, no blame on equipment, road surface or the weather. Competitiveness, overconfidence, maybe even recklessness are all part of today's racing - as the average speeds get faster, and nobody ever takes their foot off the gas even when safety dictates that's the SAFE thing to do. This happened at the head of the race, amongst the "combatants", those with the most to lose and the most to win if they RACE AGRESSIVELY - even if it means maybe not finishing - or worse. Everybody, step away for a second, and consider why this crash happen - "RECKLESS SPEED" - in my opinion.
From what I’ve heard, that road has tree roots all over the place that make the road extremely bumpy (coming from a pro who rides these roads frequently, can’t remember his name). You can ever see the riders hit a small bump while going into the turn which probably threw all of them off. It wasn’t just one rider who made a mistake/got caught off guard, it was multiple, meaning that the turn itself was unexpectedly dangerous. Obviously riders nowadays are going faster and taking more risks than ever, but the organizers should’ve known that this road wasn’t safe to do a full-speed descent on.
@@jacobbarrick6947 again, racers will race - as fast as they can, and they will fall off when they try to descend, corner or sprint into a nonexistent space when they shouldn't, with to much speed and reckless abandon. NOT RIDER ERROR, JUST BAD JUDGEMENT!

Not sure if you noticed where Vingegaard went down. There was a road sign and rocks right where he tumbled. Hard to tell if he struck it but his reaction while on the ground trying to roll to his back didn’t look good. Fingers crossed all is well.
I think cyclism underestimates this kind of situations. All the ingredients for such an accident where there, but no protection against those deadly obstacles in a dangerous and treaturous corner. I recommend a serious approach to these potentialities. This is 2024 and a rich organisation...
They had some lame barrier before the turn, but then thought there was no need for anything in front of the concrete ditch? I think that is not acceptable.
I never thought about it this way until a friend said it to me after there was a bad crash on my group ride, "you guys are racing on open roads, not a track!" There is massive risks and dangers involved. Only the riders can control the action.
After we got the good news, that Jonas "just" broke ribs and one collarbone, which was good news after the pictures we saw, uae now sent that Jay has a cervical and 2 thoracic spine vertebral. All in all it was just a really bad day. I hope they get Well soon. Also the others.

@@Poppageno Bumps on the road that seems certain, I see Tesfation skidding with the rear wheel while turning the front to compensate, and crashing, the rest crashing behind him trying to brake. Your blowout theory would mean a tubeless tyre failed... this is the first time I hear about that.
Nobody is going to talk about how shameful the race organization ? Their responsability for not protecting such a highly dangereous side of the road, in a descent, with deadly concrete obstacles right in the exit trajectory placed in the exit path of a steep curve ?
2 lane road and not highly dangerous as you say. Maybe there were some bumps in the road, but 3 guy in front lost his front wheel almost simultaneously couple of riders behind him another rider looked to have the same problem and because of that many more riders crashed. If this was a dangerous curve and there should’ve been safety blockade or cushioning or whatever it’s called in English cycling is doomed. WvA crash there was also lots of talk about bad road, dangerous downhill, etc. Real reason for his crash was his front wheel touching Benoots backwheel. cycling in groups wheel to wheel is dangerous , but keeping distance is not really an option in this sport.
What a terrible scene, looks more like a war zone than a bike race. Diesel or oil on the road perhaps? It seems there’s still a lot to learn following Gino Mäder’s death in the Tour de Suisse. Drop off onto concrete…
This does seem to be getting more and more frequent compared to say 20-30 years ago those i have no stats to support this assumption---hope all the guys involved make full and swift recovery.
i remember this also being the issue last year in Tour of the Basque. we had a death last year aswell in tour of Swiss. Its a debate that really need to reach UCI when do they ever learn to build thouse barriers! It should be a criteria for World Tour Races. We went from maybe the most exciting Tour de France to now not even knowing if it will be a 1 rider contest for all 3 tours. I think sadly we see more and more of these big crashes that is on the edge to disasters.
Awful awful news. What a horrendous week. Visma-LAB have been truly unlucky. Their 2 biggest stars Wout van Aert and Jonas Vingegaard crashes within a week and sustains very similar injuries with broken collarbone and broken ribs. They can now both peak in the Vuelta. It's gonna be tough to peak in the Tour. And then we can talk about how devastating these 2 crashes were for the sport in general. So many races will lack competition, because key riders will lack form or simply not be at the start line. This will kill excitement for the whole season.
Tesfatsion first, looks like rear wheel is skidding, so most likely he was braking, the rest start to brake to prevent crashing into him and lose control the same way? Maybe gravel on the road...
And once again, we have an example of a race director brushing aside safety concerns and warnings with disastrous consequences. Jonas himself had told the organisers that this descent was unsafe but he was duly ignored (as is most often the case). There needs to be a new system of checks and balances in place that empowers the riders (or the riders union) to boycott any race where concerns are not addressed or neglected in such a manner. This cannot keep going on like this.
Extremely sad. Best wishes to the riders for a complete and speedy recovery. I do think the race organizers have a job to do in analyzing the turn to see if it out of the ordinary or if something could have been done to reduce the risk. I get that to some extent this is part of the sport, and challenging routes are part of an exciting race. It still should be looked at, because this is bad for the sport overall.
I think the ridgity of the deeper section carbon rims does not help, there is no flex in them and that is why their front wheels keep falling away on tight corners and descents.
Well said here my thoughts. I was wondering why selection wasn't done during the climb. Same problem as yesterday, the whole peloton sprinting. GC should have attacked and created safety distances and then go downhill in single file. Second what in the world those concrete blocks on the side of the road. Did the inspect the route ? This could have been avoided disastrous day, they are all lucky could have been worse with those concrete blocks there. Their career could have ended.
Landa seemed very much in control leading the group steadily down. No knee out. No aggression. He's not a demon descender. He had time to look back. 40k to go. It was getting too aggressive behind him but why? Just follow the veteran. Anyway, I've been involved in crashes in the weirdest points in the race....
I hate seeing riders get injured. I wish Jonas and remco a speedy recovery, but realistically they shouldn’t race the Tour de France after these injuries. Three months is not enough time to fully recover and be race fit. Their full recovery should be prioritized over racing.
Reces getting more and more aggressive and faster. I love the sport but the daily crashes are getting to be like roller derby with more serious outcomes. I can hardly think of a more dangerous sport.
For Jonas the bruised lung(s) idk…. Collar bones heal like any other bone but PT is the key. Luckily the legs of all sound like they’re okay but lung(s)? 💔
When I look the video few times... For me his fork has broken!!!! Stress due to disk brake or failure in the carbon???? Very strange.... After crashes of Wout...
No broken bones for Jonas like Wout you say Wout = broken sternum, broken collarbone and several broken ribs. Reported on 28 March Jonas broken collarbone etc. Pretty poor reporting on your part.
It's impossible to make it so safe as to prevent serious injury. This is simply the nature of cycling. You could pad all sides of the ENTIRE route and still have cyclists break their necks going OTB and hitting the pavement. Yes, sensible precautions need to be taken, but it's impossible to prevent crashes with serious consequences.
Agree that padding up the whole road is financially not viable. But If there are dangerous parts in a stage why not neutralize them and create a safety car like scenario with frozen time gaps.
We simply don't yet know the extent of the injuries of those involved especially of Jonas, Jay and Remco. Roglic did abandon but filmed in the team car later on he seemed not too bad . I watched lots of replays of the crash taken from a number of angles from both heli and moto and certainly the first rider down was Tesfastion from Lidl-Trek and he was on Remco's wheel and everyone else who crashed was behind him.
Ok, another "old man yells at cloud" moment, and I only raced the Midwestern crit circuit and have ridden - but not raced - throughout France including the Alps. I get that it's a long course through open countryside and navigating it/bike handling are part of the Big boys and girls racing scene, but can't they have an actual high level racer recon the course and at least point out the most egregious spots like this for some padding or at least web fencing?
The first rider lost his balance and crashed to the left. He was outside the road after that. So I don't understand why others behind him crashed too. He wasn't on the road, on their way.
I agree with your observation, but this makes me think that people were riding too fast into the turn, causing those behind to follow them too fast into the turn. With that, it's a chain reaction.
Horrible scenes. The fact that Vingegaard had a brace around his neck to me didn't look good. Hopefully the riders recover well but man I have a feeling it's going to be an anti-climactic year for Visma LAB fans - I think Sepp Kuss will now be seen as a de facto leader for the team if Vingegaard and WVA are out for an extended period of time. It's all speculation at this point though and I really just hope for the best for them.
Dreadful scenes. There's still a lot of racing to happen yet and a chance of even more crashes before we get to the Grand Tours. Could be an unusual season. What was Landa angry about?
Looks to me like Remco overcooked the turn, causing the Trek rider to grab a handful of brakes and lose traction. Thats why Remco goes offroad even though he is in front of the Trek rider.
you know nothing about professional racing or equipment...i doubt you even own a disc brake bike..try flying down the alps in the rain with rim brakes..worthless
They are more powerful, very easy to block the wheel, that's true. That said with rim brakes you need to act with more energy in case of urgency, so it's also quite easy to skid by mistake, even though it's for the opposite reason...
@@johnkasza2315you mean like they did for 100 years plus? This delusion that riders were flying off mountains at every corner using rim brakes is hilarious.
@@johnkasza2315 riders have been going down the alps with rim brakes in the pouring rain for years, nothing to do with brakes at all. All about tire grip on the road and the speed obviously. The contact patch between tire and road will determine braking ability. Majority of crashes are rider error, overcooking a turn, excessive speed, road debris, all factors. Doesn’t matter what breaking system you are using.
@@DR_1_1 wheels and tires appear to be TLR so its possible. I couldn't see any evidence of a tubless failiure in the race footage, ie tire not off the rim and no sealant spraying out.
The speeds have gotten way too fast. The bikes, tires, and overall fitness of the riders have outstripped safety factors. Like Indy cars had to be dialed back on power, they were going faster than the safety limits of the course.
There are two types of cyclists: those who fall and those who are going to fall. Natnael Tesfazion from Lidl-Trek falls and it is natural that the cyclists behind him dodge or, out of nervousness, also lock their wheels when braking so hard. A runner on the run from Total Energies had already left before. It's not so much the fall but rather it increases the danger with those wide ditches, rocks and trees next to the road. I don't know they can put protection methods along the entire route. First, common sense, attention to cyclists and protection of others due to lack of ambulances and doctors. Falls are part of cycling, this one has "relevance" or they pay more attention to the names but they are all serious. I don't see a problem in the quality of the materials but I do see a problem in the obsession with weight. The bicycles are so light that they give way on descents in the wind and this, added to the athlete's obsession with low weight and lack of muscle, exposes them more to fractures.
bro don't blame tesfazion quickly, if you watch carefully remco took little to tesfazion side or maybe he touched his wheel second at the same time tesfazion fell the yellow t-shirt fell, so this is sport don't blame tesfazion, we hope for all riders speed recovery
@@BERARITCHANNEL I agree watch Remco's line, he deviates and doesn't follow Landa. It looks like he took out Tesfazion and then carries onwards into the trees.
Well, he might crash too!😮 But joking aside, or maybe not so joking, crashes are only thing potentially stopping him. This season will be so scarred by the last 8 days. 😢 It's gonna be boring with lack of competition until the Vuelta and then the season is over. 1,5 month into the season and it feels like it's time to look forward to 2025, because this year is almost over.😮
Did Remco go a bit wide and contact the Lidl-Trek rider behind him to the left? I haven’t seen all of the camera angles. There must have been contact, otherwise Remco should have been unaffected, no?
From the helicopter shot it seems Remco was not touched and was not even that close to the Lidl-Trek rider as it seems from this front image. Also his bike twitched just a little before the Lidl rider fell. My guess is there was something slippery on that turn. Remco went wide, wisely avoided the ditch but was unfortunate afterwards. Many others simply slipped - something must have been on the road.
@@matjazcebron536 Pretty correct assessment I think. Most riders said they were going in the curve too fast because they missed their braking moment due to bumps caused by tree roots, so they did not risk breaking too hard. Remco was looking to where he needed to go just before the crash behind him happened and he was probably startled due to the noise and looked away sending him off to the left. Still incredible that he managed to bunny hop the ditch but - in my opinion - inevitably crashed because of road tires on grass and probably a tree root in the offroad terrain. Also, these speeds are beyond belief. Most importanly: I hope everyone is pretty much OK and recovers well. Everyone is talking about the 'Stars' but the lesser gods are being neglected in most of the reports. So a big ❤to those guys as well.

It's the riders, not the vommisaires,
@@isitrachelorj3953were they on the top tube or doing the arms on the bars when yesterday's crash happened?
@@francisramirez9534 get a clue! They will go as fast as they can, take any risk necessary and do whatever is allowed because their jobs depend on it. Any new regulation will be met with doubt, derision and protest - even when for their own good.
get well soon Jonas 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
When Mohoric (san remo) sagan (many times in the past) Pidcock or MVDP (seems every weekend) tries death-defying descents/maneuvers and profit by, indeed win because of, these daring-dos at full speed, the fans go crazy, cheering, and praising them as Gods.
@@jacobbarrick6947Yeah. Bizkarra was the one who said that, and Landa pretty much confirmed it.
And thanks, Scott, I really appreciate your being quick on the draw with these incident reports, not that we ever want to see them. And no, Jonas is not the favorite for the Tour right now, it is advantage Tadej right here and right now. And I'm not saying he can't come back, maybe he will, just that suddenly he has a road to recovery which, as of today, Tadej doesn't have to endure. And I concur with other commenters here, all of these crashes are getting to be too much, too often, too hard, too bad for them and their teams and their fans. Are we watching bike racing or last rider standing? It hurts now as a spectator as it did for me decades ago as a USCF rider in a crit pile-up which caused me to say, okay, not worth it, I will enjoy my real life, not worth busting myself up in a Tuesday evening bicycle race. And that was just me in '84 as an after-work amateur, having fun snatching enough points to almost make it to Cat. 2. And i know pros are paid and expected to recover from these bad wrecks, but how many times can our favorites keep bouncing back from these crashes?
Bike racing is dangerous, as you indicated in your comment. It was dangerous when you were racing and it remains dangerous today.
@@elkellenhabla Thanks for your reply and I am just in shock over it all, all for naught, all the speculation and anticipation of a Tour battle among the four favorites in peak fitness and readiness.
Not sure if you noticed where Vingegaard went down. There was a road sign and rocks right where he tumbled. Hard to tell if he struck it but his reaction while on the ground trying to roll to his back didn’t look good. Fingers crossed all is well.
I believe it's broken ribs & a collapsed lung, hopefully there no injuries to back or neck for Jonas
Jonas' injuries are basically a copy of Wout's. Visma-LAB got their season ruined within 8 days.
Why are there huge boulders on the edge of the road where there’s a fast downhill right turn ? Absolutely terrible .
it looked like boulders placed to prevent vehicles from driving onto a small path to me
Maybe they need to ride wider tires for the extra grip. How about a 35mm minimum tire width rule?
Remco hopped the ditch but nearly hit a large tree head-on. If that had happened... Very lucky, all things considered.
That was sick riding by Remco.
Total disaster, WTF happened? Hoping for the best for all the riders.
Tesfatsion fell down, then a few braked and lost control as the turn was so fast...
@@DR_1_1 Just speed? Was there something on the road/corner?
@@patrickwong4824 Bumpy road, fast curve, they all ride too close fighting for a position, so when one fell the others follow... That's what one of the competitors replied at the end! he said he doesn't think someone was to blame.
#3 rider had a front wheel blowout, you can see the puff at the ground level. He then loses his front whell and at the same time Remco veers off road and behind them Jonas also straightens out the curve and crashes. Maybe the noise of the blowout shocked everyone?
@@Poppageno Bumps on the road that seems certain, I see Tesfation skidding with the rear wheel while turning the front to compensate, and crashing, the rest crashing behind him trying to brake.
Your blowout theory would mean a tubeless tyre failed... this is the first time I hear about that.
I was so hyped for basque country man…
Nobody is going to talk about how shameful the race organization ? Their responsability for not protecting such a highly dangereous side of the road, in a descent, with deadly concrete obstacles right in the exit trajectory placed in the exit path of a steep curve ?
War auch mein Hauptgedanke.
Brutal. Hate seeing these things. I hope all can recover well.
What a terrible scene, looks more like a war zone than a bike race. Diesel or oil on the road perhaps? It seems there’s still a lot to learn following Gino Mäder’s death in the Tour de Suisse. Drop off onto concrete…
Thanks for the update. Lot of guys hitting the deck in this race, it seems.
Speed recovery for all riders.
Natnael may God be with you.
that jump from remco is insane, might have saved the rest of his season.
This does seem to be getting more and more frequent compared to say 20-30 years ago those i have no stats to support this assumption---hope all the guys involved make full and swift recovery.
yes swift recovery
i remember this also being the issue last year in Tour of the Basque. we had a death last year aswell in tour of Swiss.
For helvede da osse😢
Awful awful news. What a horrendous week.
Visma-LAB have been truly unlucky. Their 2 biggest stars Wout van Aert and Jonas Vingegaard crashes within a week and sustains very similar injuries with broken collarbone and broken ribs.
They can now both peak in the Vuelta. It's gonna be tough to peak in the Tour.
And then we can talk about how devastating these 2 crashes were for the sport in general. So many races will lack competition, because key riders will lack form or simply not be at the start line. This will kill excitement for the whole season.
This could have potentially very serious knock on effects for the early season, if not all year. Terrible news 😔
These last 8 days have been dreadful. So many riders gonna miss the main part of their season.
Was there something on the road? What tires were they riding? Seemed like 2 riders lost traction at the same time
Tesfatsion first, looks like rear wheel is skidding, so most likely he was braking, the rest start to brake to prevent crashing into him and lose control the same way?
Did you see all that concrete near the road reminds me a bit of the Isle of Man TT races just a death trap?
Jonas Vingegaard got a punctured lung, acording to the main Danish Television/Radio station. 😢 Wish him a fast recovery with no implications.
That concrete ditch should have been fenced off in some way. So dangerous
Remco take a bow for that bike handling effort !
This is tragic..however with no malicious intent..this is part of racing and particularly at this high level..pushing the limits
Going to teh Giro may level the playing field a little bit because aside from Tadej these guys may have suboptimal training for the Tour
Landa seemed very much in control leading the group steadily down. No knee out. No aggression. He's not a demon descender. He had time to look back. 40k to go. It was getting too aggressive behind him but why? Just follow the veteran. Anyway, I've been involved in crashes in the weirdest points in the race....
remco hopped the ditch, hit the grass, luckily missed the trees and rocks and looked like a collarbone so he might be ok soon
Why do they not put up barriers or something when rocks and cement are at the corners? 💔
I hate seeing riders get injured. I wish Jonas and remco a speedy recovery, but realistically they shouldn’t race the Tour de France after these injuries. Three months is not enough time to fully recover and be race fit.
Their full recovery should be prioritized over racing.
As long as bike races has taken place, solid crashes have occured. It's part of the sport.
Reces getting more and more aggressive and faster. I love the sport but the daily crashes are getting to be like roller derby with more serious outcomes.
I can hardly think of a more dangerous sport.
No broken bones for any cyclists? come on now? you can't say things you're not 100% sure of on such a sensitive subject
UPDATE: jonas vingegaard has also suffered injury of a punctured lung from the crash yesterday.
Good job mate . Godt arbejde og god stil 🙂
At the speed these riders go at, crashes are inevitable.
Tragic couple of weeks for cycling
Better reporting. Thanks.
The cycling dane looks like Grizzley Dan these days 😂
For Jonas the bruised lung(s) idk…. Collar bones heal like any other bone but PT is the key. Luckily the legs of all sound like they’re okay but lung(s)? 💔
When I look the video few times... For me his fork has broken!!!! Stress due to disk brake or failure in the carbon???? Very strange.... After crashes of Wout...
No broken bones for Jonas like Wout you say
Wout = broken sternum, broken collarbone and several broken ribs. Reported on 28 March
Jonas broken collarbone etc.
Pretty poor reporting on your part.
Nobody going to comment on the concrete gully and the huge ‘thou shall not pass’ boulders?
We need to take a safety first approach in cycling like in formula 1 and many other sports. Things have to chance. hope everyone recovers well.
DUH, you going to volunteer to put the padding up along 250k of road - both sides?
It's impossible to make it so safe as to prevent serious injury. This is simply the nature of cycling. You could pad all sides of the ENTIRE route and still have cyclists break their necks going OTB and hitting the pavement.
Yes, sensible precautions need to be taken, but it's impossible to prevent crashes with serious consequences.
What are you suggesting?
Agree that padding up the whole road is financially not viable. But If there are dangerous parts in a stage why not neutralize them and create a safety car like scenario with frozen time gaps.
We simply don't yet know the extent of the injuries of those involved especially of Jonas, Jay and Remco. Roglic did abandon but filmed in the team car later on he seemed not too bad . I watched lots of replays of the crash taken from a number of angles from both heli and moto and certainly the first rider down was Tesfastion from Lidl-Trek and he was on Remco's wheel and everyone else who crashed was behind him.
again watch bro your eyes not good
Vine with three fractures in spine per cycling weekly. No good.
I just heard from Danish news that Jonas has broken his collarbone, And some ribs. Nothing else apparently
How did I live my whole life without you?
The first rider lost his balance and crashed to the left. He was outside the road after that. So I don't understand why others behind him crashed too. He wasn't on the road, on their way.
I agree with your observation, but this makes me think that people were riding too fast into the turn, causing those behind to follow them too fast into the turn. With that, it's a chain reaction.
It looks like each realized they were going too fast and therefore decided to ride straight for maximum braking off the course
There is no information on whether any rider broke bones. Let's wait before speculating.
Cannot modulate disc brakes like you can with rim brakes. Panic braking, even by pros, is incredibly difficult and must be considered as a factor.
you know nothing about professional racing or equipment...i doubt you even own a disc brake bike..try flying down the alps in the rain with rim brakes..worthless
Disc are too powerful for the road tire contact patch. It's that simple. Leave MTB tech where it belongs FFS 😢
Hookless? It kind of looks like the tire is off the rim in the slow mo
They dont use hookless at LIDL Trek.

@@DR_1_1 wheels and tires appear to be TLR so its possible. I couldn't see any evidence of a tubless failiure in the race footage, ie tire not off the rim and no sealant spraying out.
Extreme Bummer this one.
The speeds have gotten way too fast. The bikes, tires, and overall fitness of the riders have outstripped safety factors. Like Indy cars had to be dialed back on power, they were going faster than the safety limits of the course.
Faster than Amstrong, Pantani...
@@DR_1_1 yes! We're not just talking about strava segments here, point to point on a climb.

This is so sad. Are you sure that the road was clean?
Jonas cracked collarbone and multiple cracked ribs like Wout. Remco cracked collarbone and scapula
the 3 all have broken bones! All of them broke the collarbones and Vingegaard several broken ribs on top...
@@BERARITCHANNEL he wasn't blaming anybody! He was stating that the crashes are inevitable - for a bunch of different reasons.
Shall we just give poggy both the giro and the tour now and we can focus on a different sport?
Well, he might crash too!😮 But joking aside, or maybe not so joking, crashes are only thing potentially stopping him. This season will be so scarred by the last 8 days. 😢 It's gonna be boring with lack of competition until the Vuelta and then the season is over. 1,5 month into the season and it feels like it's time to look forward to 2025, because this year is almost over.😮
Super sad
Roglic always crashing 💀 such bad luck

Hmm its hard to be sure since medical protocol requires riders to be told to lay as they are and then be immobilised in bracing before transport.
