Funny aspect, wasn’t Wout injury very similar to Jonas's, as far as we know? Shouldn’t the same question be asked of Wout? I think given time both will be fine. Only Visma LAB will use the tour as a training ride for their superstars.
Big difference is that Wout is not riding for GC. He can pick what stages to save energy and when to spend it. Jonas will not have that luxury. If the GC guys go, he has to go with them. And as far as I know then Wout's injuries were "only" broken collarbone and ribs. I have not heard anything of him having a punctured lung. It seems that it's the lung that is causing the most doubt about Jonas. It makes sense. You cannot climb well without your lungs being 100%.
@@Soli11there was a broken sternum and a (late detected) pneumothorax on Wout's injury list too. And Jonas didn't have a fully punctured lung by the reports. He had contusion (bruise) and pneumothorax (air in the chest cavity, but not unlikely to be from a fully collapsed lung as they didn't discover it until the day after with Jonas either.) There's quite a lot of levels of this type of injuries and if the pneumothorax wasn't detected immediately, it likely was on the less severe side of the spectrum.
He can do it. He has the mental toughness and commitment to excellence mindset that will enable him to return to the level of fitness that has enabled him to excel at the top echelon on cycling. Go Jonas!
'Time and no pressure' - yep, that's part of the formula to get back. This won't be his year, but he'll be back. Hard to see a well run top team like Jumbo risking his long term health and viability just to have him on the start line next to someone like Tadej who has so far had a near perfect path to the TDF.
He certainly could, but he has no self discipline and wastes too much energy when he doesn’t need to. He turns his strength into his biggest weakness. He is the most talented rider I’ve seen in my lifetime, but certainly not the best tactician. I think he will be totally burned out after the Giro and TDF. I do expect him to win both of those Grand Tours. His ego will enter the Vuelta and he will get trounced there.
@@tobiasdencker853 Maybe so, but they most likely will not be in top racing form giving the advantage to Pog if he wants to try race all 3 of the big races.
@@SpurOne76 His Achilles heel. Seems to want to try to win every stage, attempts to sprint up every hill, wants to cross every stage finishing line first.
His young age is certainly in his favor. I think he should listen to his body as he pushes it in training. If TDF is out this year for him, then he has a year to prepare for 2025...certainly not what he wants, but might be best. Whatever, I respect him and really appreciate his humility.
It remains to be seen if he can come back as strong; physically and mentally. And, a lot of this relates to how severe his injuries were and the trauma to his body and soul. We've seen a number of injuries in the past, albeit much more severe for example Chris Froome, where the rider, despite incredible and inspirational efforts to comeback, just haven't produced the rider they once were pre-injury. I can't imagine what it takes to go through this, and I hope that not only Jonas but any riders recently suffering injury are able to return to 100% for their sake and our sport. But, history might suggest different.
Jonas is among my favorites and I hope to see you back and at full power! Like Froome, when I broke my femur, I was never the same, but Jonas is a superhuman with much different wounds and I hope he can overcome.
The good thing is that Vingegaard still has six weeks to recover fully, so I expect him to be at the TdF. Whether he will be able to compete through those three weeks at the same performance level as he has in the past two years - only time will tell.
hope hope hope he is ok to race his best. Mostly glad he is just ok and alive. But he absolutely is my top guy, even with Pogacar being an insanely pleasant and decent champion, there is just something about the blue collar working class energy from Jonas that i cant help but support and cheer for. fingers crossed, not long now...
Rib injuries can be really nasty and take a long time to heal and bond back to the lung material. Also the risk of bacterial Pneumonia in the early stages of healing , he’s done really well to be back on the bike so quickly 👍
He'll be fine. I've had the same scenario and I'm better than I ever have been and I'm a 60 year old chump! He's a bad ass with all the best resources at his disposal so I say again, he'll be fine.
Let's face it, Jonas is a superhuman but his Kryptonite this year besides the injuries is downtime. The inability to train and race puts him at a huge disadvantage in this years TDF. He could be a good support super soigneur but Vista put all their eggs in one basket when Roglic left. I say Jonas (if he partakes in this years tour) wins at least one stage, Lance with his uni-ball and . Lemond after being shot with a shotgun came back to win tours ( well at least LeMond) Jonas will win again, maybe not this year though.
If he does come back for the TdF, he'll not be in top form, and that's fine. Also, he may not be 100% forthcoming about how he's doing. He would rather be under-estimated, I think. Let's look at Wout van Aert, who suffered a similar injury this year. He was back on a bike in 3-4 weeks and is coming back strong. I wouldn't think Vingegaard would be different.
Why are you comparing riders with hip/leg/pelvis injuries like Bernal, Froome and Remco (though he has legit come back from that too, as you say) ?!? Why not compare him with Arnaud de Lie's 4JdD crash and recovery last season and all the other riders who have the same type and combination of injuries as Vingegaard? The issues from a lower body injury in cycling are generally not comparable to upper body ones, where the latter normally has much quicker and less problematic recovery rates... Come on guys?
I think we will see him back to full form next season. I think he should abandon grand tour plans for this season to aid in his recovery and ensure he’s not dealing with any complications. Really doubt he’d even be competitive in the Vuelta this year but I could be wrong (I hope I am).
With Pogi in dominating form in the Giro, i think for the team's goals and for Jonas it would be wise to pass on the TdF for Jonas and just being ready when he's ready, hopefully for the Vuelta .
I am encouraged by the recovery of Greg Lemond when he came back from being shot in the back to win his third TDF win. Hopefully, Jonas Vingegaard can come this year.
LeMond’s injury was much worse and he did have to sit out the 1987 TDF. Jonas is on the road in only a month’s time and he was in incredible form at the time of his crash. Only question is will he return to winning form. I think they should hold him for the Vuelta.
Greg Lemond also came back the year where the unknown anti-anemia drug EPO was released, not on the list of banned substances and when Lemond had magic recovery from anemia during the Giro by - according to Lemond getting injectable vitamins and iron shots...
if anyone has a chance at coming back as strong it has to be Jonas. As you point out, Egan Bernal is making inroads into his previous form after a horror crash
Jonas didn't have the catastrophic injuries of a Froome or Bernal, he was pretty banged up but no deep skeletal injures. Froome of course has never been anywhere within cooee of his previous form and dominance, and Bernal has shown glimpses but I don't know if he will return to and consistency... Remco showed how it's done with his recovery from his nasty crash and subsequent rainbow bands, as Kelly said with a strong head and weak legs you can still triumph...Look at Wout, his injuries were more severe than Jonas's, we're talking about professional sportsmen, who have that mentality and a bottomless support network of the finest therapists and doctors.. Will Jonas return to the Tour this year, doubtful but I think eyes will be on Tadej and Primoz on the lead up. Tadej will win the Giro, he has no competition unless you call Thomas huffing and puffing a challenge. Primoz strangely I don't see as a threat, then again we have little to measure him by other than his living atop Mt Teide, if that's where he is... Jonas will recover fully, although probably no where near top form, he'll do the Vuelta in August and win that. 2025 everyone will be a year older and I suspect a real barn burner of a Tour between Tadej and Jonas they both should be at the absolute gheight of their physical abilities then.
Wout's injuries were not more severe? If anything then Jonas' injuries have been more severe since he had all the same injuries as Wout + lung contusion, punctured lung and broken fingers.
@@Soli11Wout also had pneumothorax (not necessarily meaning a fully punctured lung for either) but it was only discovered a while after the crash... So not much difference. Plus we don't know how many ribs Jonas broke nor what ribs it were for either.
Whether he can compete in the TDF, or win it again, that is what remains to be seen. Those kind of injuries, combined with the massive expectations on him, may make him hold off for a while longer than his fans wish.
It's hard to balance between been recovered enough to be competitive in the Tour and the pressure of the team that now has only him as a leader for the Tour. We all want him to be fully recovered and be on the Tour, but what is the best alternative if he's not? Wait until next year, and go to the Vuelta, or go to de Tour anyways, since "anything can happen in the Tour"?
Sepp Kuss and Matteo Jorgensen can step in and compete for a podium finish. Send Wout, Sepp, Utebroeks, Van Barle with Jonas to the Vuelta to win the Red jersey.
Froome had his best years behind him anyway. Bernal and Vingegaard is the same age as Armstrong was when he won his first TdF and had recovered from cancer, at 27, so they both have a lot of career left.
If he is 90%, could he start the TDF and get better and better by week 3? Tadej will be coming off the Giro so week 3 of TDF could be rough for him. If Wout is there to help along with Kuss, Van Barle and Jorgensen Jonas could potentially push Tadej, Remco and Primoz. Jonas at 90% is better than nearly the rest of the peloton. I think if he is going to ride the TDF he needs to do the Tour De Suisse as a dry run. If he is not on top form, save him for the Vuelta and send Sepp as the leader of the TDF. I would not rush him though. That gravel stage in the TDF concerns me.
Uh yeah, that gravel stage will be hell for painful ribs and collarbone😬 But this years TDF course is such a good match for Jonas. Would be a shame for him to miss this year! I so hope he gets ready in time🤞👏
@@ellisejensen1863 I think the ribs and collarbone will heal fine, I’m concerned that Jonas has not raced on gravel and Tadej is the best in the world at it. I’m concerned that Jonas could crash or puncture on the gravel stage. Until the ribs and collarbone completely heal it will be painful to do any climbing. The video that showed him back on the bike was in Jutland, Denmark . . . Very flat, but windy so that will help him until he can get back to Switzerland and the Canary Islands. You are absolutely correct, except for the gravel stage this year’s TDF route favors Jonas. It would be a shame for him to miss it. Let’s hope we see him on the start line. If he’s at the start line, it means he thinks he has the chops to win it.
@scottsefton294 it's a flat Gravel stage on a different terrain and gravel type than Strade. Pogacar is good at it, but he isn't automatically "the best" in the world at it. For this TdF stage look to Paris Tours and Tro Bro winners 😅
I think a punctured lung is a real problem for him to be challenging at the tour his year. Maybe I am wrong and maybe he shocks the world but I suspect that he will need to focus on next year. It is a shame because Tadej seems to have upped the levels on his end in anticipation of a showdown with Vingegaard and UAE have stacked their team to compete with Visma... I think even Pogacar would admit that he would rather have a fully fit Vingegaard to compete against.
Here’s the problem, if he gets 2nd at the tour to Pogicar , will we blame it on the crash?? Or is it possible that he comes in 100% and we get a close battle that seems fair, or rather one in which both are 100%. Last year Pogicar had the injury that messed up his preparation. I imagine Pogacar wins this year and we don’t get a battle of them 100 % until 2025
I think that's a VERY dramatic take on Jonas. He's young, healthy and has access to the VERY BEST rehab in the world. He will be back to dominate, no problem.
@@mtelectrical8068 He has youth in his side. As an old hag of 60, I do believe that his recuperative powers are at peak. He is also very healthy with a team of highly trained specialists (medical and on the Visma team) to make sure he heals well and properly. Now it is possible the emotional and mental trauma of the crash may take a bit of a toll on him. Those are things that can't be quantified by anyone but Jonas. Having said all that, I do hope that he decides to skip the Tour this year as painful as it will be. I know I would say that to him if I were his mother. Whenever those boys have a nasty spill, my first thought is always "I hope mama didn't see that!" Problem is, pro cycling is such a cruel sport in that you always have younger and younger cyclists coming up behind you with what seems like demon like energy ready to steal your thunder! They (Jonas, Tadae, et all..) win thier Gran Tours and scarcely have time to enjoy the fruits of the labors before they are cast aside for the new, bright shiny thing! Thus poor Jonas may feel like he HAS to return to road whatever the cost.
I won’t believe that he can’t be as good as last year. His injuries were not in the same league as Chris and Egan. But visma are having a dreadful season and that might put pressure on them
its like a soldier going back to war, you just shut down the thinking brain, and do the things you know, jonas is to much talent to not recover from this
I like Vinegegaard, but no rah, rah from me. He was pounded in that crash. There will be a lot of pre$$ure on him to do the Tour, but I think, long term, it would be a mistake to take it on this year. Let the recovery be gradual, and, once he's clearly healed, do a late season race program that graduates in intensity. Continue through normal winter training, then come back in full form next season. Stage racing needs him to be competitive with Pogačar!
You may have to only look back to Andy Schleck, Egan Bernal and Chris Froome for your answer... lets hope its not the case with JV.. 7 weeks to get ready
Serious question: all professional cyclists now look anemic. I know they’re top notch professionals with doctors and nutritionists behind them. However, given how serious are their injuries when crashing (I also understand they ride at higher speeds) do you know about anyone analyzing if they are so near their breaking points (physical stress) that now they face career ending injuries more often than before?

He had contusion (bruise) and pneumothorax (air in the chest cavity, but not unlikely to be from a fully collapsed lung as they didn't discover it until the day after with Jonas either.)
There's quite a lot of levels of this type of injuries and if the pneumothorax wasn't detected immediately, it likely was on the less severe side of the spectrum.
The gap between the tour and full recovery is doubtful but I’m sure he’ll be back with full strength 🙂🤞
Pogacar the only one not injured. Looks like he could win the Triple Crown of races with the big 3 out with injuries.
roglic and evenpoel is going and vingegaard is very likely to go
He certainly could, but he has no self discipline and wastes too much energy when he doesn’t need to.
Seems to want to try to win every stage, attempts to sprint up every hill, wants to cross every stage finishing line first.
would love to see him win the Tour this year and beyond and dominate the Tour like Nadal at the French Open.
Im crestfallen hearing of this. Wishing JV a full recovery. 😢❤
if he does not win the tour, then the vuelta must be top target ! kom så Jonas!
People are forgetting that vingegaard is 27 and froome was 34
And Vingegaard broke his femur in 2017, not in this crash. This crash had no lower body fractures.
Jonas will Be back and we Will see him i battle With poda years to come! He is the best rider in the World 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰
Believe his determination to defend his TdF title will serve him well in coming back from recovery.
The good thing is that Vingegaard still has six weeks to recover fully, so I expect him to be at the TdF. Whether he will be able to compete through those three weeks at the same performance level as he has in the past two years - only time will tell.
Given that Rog and WVA won't be there as the team's decoys, it won't matter. Pog can just sit on him and ride around him at leisure.
hope hope hope he is ok to race his best.
J'espère qu'il reviendra à sa meilleure forme !! 😮😢on vera seul l avenir le dira 😊😊🎉bon courage a toi Jonas
Get well soon JV. I hope you can compete viciously for TDF 2024. I pray for your health and recovery. True Champion.
He looked fine in the video update. Unless his longs got damaged, he should be okay and in top form come TDF
Thank you.
The best rider man🇪🇷🇪🇷✅
He'll be fine. I've had the same scenario and I'm better than I ever have been and I'm a 60 year old chump! He's a bad ass with all the best resources at his disposal so I say again, he'll be fine.
I think your right, the physical part can be fixed, but measuring the psychological effects are much less easy.
Lemond after being shot with a shotgun came back to win tours ( well at least LeMond)
Jonas will win again, maybe not this year though.
It doesn’t seem that bad. I think he’ll be fine by next year for sure and maybe even by this summer.
Fr people is overreacting so bad
Jonas is one of the reasons I am a Visma fan. Hope we get to see him at the TDF.
Lets hope not. I want him to take time to recover. And have ride the Vuelta oder TDF 2025.
Never said anything about riding lol
@@gerritlikestohike. I think you’re right,to be competitive after what happened is no mean task. Can’t see him winning the 2024 Tour de France.
Come on Jonas! He will be back! He is young and strong.
(RECOVERY UPDATE) is the key in title. You gave a summary of his riding for the year, thus far. Go to the back of the class for detention.
Thank you. Good luck Jonas.
With Pogi in dominating form in the Giro, i think for the team's goals and for Jonas it would be wise to pass on the TdF for Jonas and just being ready when he's ready, hopefully for the Vuelta .
Once you win TdF you are forever a legend period.
Did your broadcast end with 40 sec for Pogacar to go?? And even if reloaded..it just ended?
I am encouraged by the recovery of Greg Lemond when he came back from being shot in the back to win his third TDF win. Hopefully, Jonas Vingegaard can come this year.
LeMond’s injury was much worse and he did have to sit out the 1987 TDF. Jonas is on the road in only a month’s time and he was in incredible form at the time of his crash. Only question is will he return to winning form. I think they should hold him for the Vuelta.
Greg lemond had the advantage of being pumped full of steroids, PED’s, and amphetamines
Greg Lemond also came back the year where the unknown anti-anemia drug EPO was released, not on the list of banned substances and when Lemond had magic recovery from anemia during the Giro by - according to Lemond getting injectable vitamins and iron shots...
Epo was in the pelton in 86 onward . Just saying
@@MichaelOprisiusr not sure what this comment has to with topic of Jonas Vingegaard's recovery.
Oh c’moooon, what kind of title is that? Not a fan of Jonas, but let’s not write him off just yet.
Lol you must be kidding hahaa I am a huge fan
I think that Jonas will be fine, he will be at his best by the Vuelta for sure.
if anyone has a chance at coming back as strong it has to be Jonas. As you point out, Egan Bernal is making inroads into his previous form after a horror crash
Hope he is fit for the tour we need a good battle
Plus we don't know how many ribs Jonas broke nor what ribs it were for either.
thecyclingdane: “Will Jonas Vingegaard EVER BE THE SAME AGAIN?”
answer: “No! He will be BETTER” . . . “Tell Pogacar that”
It may be a bit too soon for the TdF this year, but Jonas is young enough that he can return to his old form.
Whether he can compete in the TDF, or win it again, that is what remains to be seen. Those kind of injuries, combined with the massive expectations on him, may make him hold off for a while longer than his fans wish.
Off course. His injuries are not life threatening. They will affect him this season though, and he won't reach the level he otherwise would have had.
Agreed don’t race unless you are completely ready
Jonas is the one who can beat Tajei Pocacar this year again and win the Tour. I have no doubts. Go Vingegaard! 👏❤
I think he'll be back and strong next year. As long as he didn't permanently damage his lung, I think he'll get back to the same level.
Glad to see you avoided bias, as usual. Great to see him back.
Pog is much fitter than last year. With this crash there is no way for him to win the TdF this year. I hope for an epic battle next year.
He should do the Tour. But, the team needs to be prepared for not seeing him on the podium. A top 5 might be a good recovery result.
The most awesome pro rider on planet earth....
He will take the Tour De France title this year as well!
He will make a full recovery, his prognosis was nowhere near Bernal or Froome. It's only this season may not be on his level.
Dramatic? 12 days in Hospital 😮
Whenever those boys have a nasty spill, my first thought is always "I hope mama didn't see that!"
Problem is, pro cycling is such a cruel sport in that you always have younger and younger cyclists coming up behind you with what seems like demon like energy ready to steal your thunder!
They (Jonas, Tadae, et all..) win thier Gran Tours and scarcely have time to enjoy the fruits of the labors before they are cast aside for the new, bright shiny thing!
Thus poor Jonas may feel like he HAS to return to road whatever the cost.
And only 33 days without riding he was just in hospital in 13 day because of his name@@mtelectrical8068
That’s one of the most stupid question I have ever heard.
I can't believe you tried drawing a comparison between Egan bernal's crash injuries and Jonas....
he should be fine
You may have to only look back to Andy Schleck, Egan Bernal and Chris Froome for your answer... lets hope its not the case with JV.. 7 weeks to get ready
Jonas wasn’t injured as heavily
No lower body injuries in Vingegaard this time. And he came back just fine from that broken femur in 2017
I’m afraid to watch this but I’m gonna do it. Deep breath…..
Ok. Phew. I was wrong. Great commentary as usual!
I'd rather have a fresh Vingegaard in the Vuelta then a rushed tdf where he loses to pogi and cant restore to the fullest
In my opinion Tadej is going so hard at the Giro because he expects Jonas to not be at his peak in the TdF due to his injury.
Rubbish. Tadej goes hard because that’s what Tadej has always done
He Will become the sam maybye even better🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰
No one "deserves" a win. You either win, or you do not based on reality not favoritism.
He will be back full strength next year after recovery and training. Packing frozen fish is not in his future.
