hey, steadicam op here, 24:30 you got it pretty much correct! the problem is you are not using your body to micro-counter-balance it, just expecting it to stay up straight without your body input. Use your hips and tilt them up and down just millimetres opposite of the direction where arm is falling. obviously every time you walk with it the belt is gonna be sliding on your hips, so your body needs to be counter balancing the arm constantly. It takes some time to get the hand of it, good luck!

@@jjsereday well, first I built one from a few NATO rails and cheese plates. Worked pretty well. Then I read the same problem from another commenter on UA-cam and someone had replied they feared the same but the piece was in fact underneath another part in the case. I forget where but i checked and it was indeed in there but buried/embedded/hidden. So my apologies to the Tilta quality control team!
Ah yea i have the nato cross rail but the additional nato clamp that he said came in a bag in this video - mine didn’t come with that additional nato clamp. 😒
Dude I just spent the last 4 hours in my garage feeling like a total idiot trying to wrangle that arm into cooperating with me. I'm so happy to see someone else felt the exact same way. I still can't figure out why it is so uncomfortable, the whole point was to be able to shoot all day, but man it was killing my back just shooting with it for 20 minutes after getting it balanced.
Nice to see a REAL first-time-hands-on video. This is the real world and it is nice to know this is a piece of kit that will take TIME to learn to set up and use. Critical to practice this until one can actually deploy this in real time on a set ... and not look like an idiot! 27:23 I just got mine with just the Adapter for my Handheld Setup. I also ordered for the same reason and even with the shoulder strap it doesn't feel very comfortable. I don't know what to do with it now. Testing it some more but idk if I gonna really like it one day. It really hurts my back, and I bought it to save my back. Doesn't make sense.
I want to see a steadicam operator show us how to use this. Another reason I guess why steadicam operators get paid especially strapped with such as an Arri Trinity.
This has to be the most helpful honest product review video i ever saw ... cancelling my order cause the only reason i ordered it was the comfort ... i could just install the gimbal on a steadicam n take that stress off
Rather than just using the belt, you should also use the shoulder and back supports. This then allows you to use your shoulder tilt to micro balance the left to right push of the arm. Also, when operating, don't grab the pole itself, just use 2 fingers to gently guide the rotation of the pole and use your other hand to operate the arms from the hook. Grabbing the pole , although it makes you feel like you're sucuring the safety of your rig, does not assit you in any way - it only adds to reduce the dampening effect of the float itself whilst walking/running. Good luck and practice lots - don't give up because eventually you'll master it and find that it is a superb tool,
I just reference your video on the Tilta users fb page in a post.... its hard to tighten the roll axis of the arm. It snaps open like yours does at 25:20 and you hear the rosette grinding
Super helpful video. Got mine a week ago and my brain hurt just trying to assemble it. The Tilta video was NO help whatsoever. I'm also 95% certain that some parts might have been missing from mine because some of the stuff in the Tilta video wasn't in my complete kit. I'm fairly certain I could eventually learn to use it, but it's been such a horror show trying to set up in the quiet of my office that I feel like I would never take the time to use it on set. I'm positive it would work for the right operator. But I don't think I'm that guy, so sending mine back. Wish I'd watched this BEFORE placing my order.

It's nice to Adress the d-tap issue to make sure to get it right but it would be nice to edit the video in a way that this info comes before assembling everything now the viewer in worst case has to reassemble everything like you had to
Dana, Thank you for this! Your video is very helpful - In many ways! I'm waiting for mine to arrive, and just like you, I want to love it. But this a dose of reality. A friend of mine is using a Zhiyun crane with a Redking stabilizer and he's been pretty happy with it. But I thought this was going to crush it. But now I can see this journey is far from over. I had been using the Feiyutech AK4500 for the last year, but it was awkward and I spent months trying to mount it on a steadycam system, with mixed results. The RS2 was everything I was hoping for. I often use it with a 1foot carbon fiber rod between the tripod feet and the gimbal itself, just to have more to hold onto and raise the camera up when I need to. I was hoping the float was going to make it the complete package. sigh. Maybe Tilta will take note and improve the situation. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

It took me a while and I eventually got it balanced better, the float itself was super easy to balance even the first time, but the spring arm was where I was having the real problems. After reading some comments about using your body to counter the movements I was able to get it to a usable spot, but even with 3 days practice I found myself not liking the footage. On top of that, even if I did LOVE the footage I still would have returned it, the whole reason for buying it was to help ease my lower back and piriformis muscles in my hips, and that belt was making it exponentially worse in such a short period of time. I sent it back on Tuesday and I haven't heard anything from them sense, not really happy about that since I only like an hour away from their warehouse.

Dana, I’ve been researching this while I’m STILL waiting for my float to arrive. I was able to become a member of the Tilta DJI ecosystem users group. I shared my concerns with a guy named vaho mat who has a few video posts of him successfully working with the float. I corresponded with him and he commented that your belt adjustments where not correct. Again I’m just passing this info along; I do not yet have first hand experience! I’ll find a link to his videos... I also have these... comments from Nick at Tilta; the moderator of the group: “Hey Tom! You will need to adjust the rotation of the back part of the arm in order to adjust where the arm sits! More info can be found here. Also keep in mind that the Float is designed to be operated while keeping a hand on the bar that connects to the post, meaning you will be able to control exactly where the post sits in relation to your body by physically moving it with one hand. The idea is to adjust the balance so you don't have to fight it to keep it where you want it, but you will not be able to operate the system with no hands.”

Oh sorry bro I actually returned it, I couldn’t ever get the shots to look good and even the dudes that are in love with their float’s shots aren’t what I am looking for. Even if I could get it to work right, the pain it caused my hips and lower back was not worth even the smoothest shot in the world
Just got mine today and I am experiencing the same issues. I managed to get the whole thing balanced quite well. Watched all of the Junior Lucano videos on YT on how to balance the Arri Trinity so that I would understand the concept. You / me should get better with practices... lots of it. Donno if it is worth it for what I do? Hmm...

Hello, did you give up your Tilta float? After seeing your video, I doubted I would buy one. And after watching another video, I bought one and it works fine and I don't have back pain now. However, I spent a lot of time figuring out my setup, and of course I also have a back pain at the start because the Float Tilta was very misconfigured. After finding the right setup, all went well. And in the end the back pain was no longer relevant. I come back to my question: Did you give up the Tilta float? Thank you in advance for your answer.
Hy, 16:20 wrong balance you must do "drop test" it must be 2-3 seconds. i mean the post must down from horizontal position to vertical about 2-3 seconds. Good luck
I purchased a Ronin MX in early February, when I heard about the Tilta Float a month later I instantly regretted buying the MX & not the RS2! The footage at the end of this video is terrible, I had faith in the Float, I guess ill get the RS2 for my BMPCC 6K & call it a day haha.

It is a bit frustrating to talk about this manufacturer as there is no news at least in Europe about the Float SYStem delivery. It is nice to see that the production continues. this rig seems like it would be great with an actual steadicam arm and vest. the rosette mount for the arm probably isn't strong enough to hold the torgue created from the arm. disappointing as this rig has a lot of potential
The Float is amazing. It’s ok to not be good at something right away. A lot of these comments are blaming the gear which is a bad habit to fall into and an inaccurate one here.
I want the float, but 100% holding off until this stuff is addressed. I've had issues with Tilta in the past with returns. I really want to like them, they seem to have cool products but this stuff and my return experience with them makes me think again about buying. With my return story, I learned to not buy direct from them. I will only buy their products from B&H who has an amazing sales team.
I made the same setup a long long time ago and I did not like it. I shoot weddings and I did not see myself wearing this. I see a number of issues in ur set up and id like to comment. First, you had a veryl lite set up. Due to this, the pole wasnt long enough to clear ur body. It should be almost ur height to have clearance. Also it was so light that the spring tension from the arms was too strong. having a heavier camera will loosen up the springs. 2nd, you are using a tri mount and not a sled . The feet for your trimount was hitting you. Third, you had a belt and not a brace. It led to a very unstable mount w/c did not stabilize the rig. the whole brace/vest/stabilizer look is all asthetics in my opinion. Devin graham only had the glidecam and he did not use a vest rig. Thanks for the honest video. Sorry it did not work for u.
The best definitely is not aesthetics, I have a steadicam pilot, and I could not hold that sled with one hand if I tried. It weighs around 25lb total. That’s a lot of wrist strain when trying to finess a shot

Dawww, you make me cancel my order! I diy one with gear from digital foto! Mine seems to have less problems, but more cables out! I have a vid of me using it with footage to compare! What scares me is that the footage you shot is actually worse than what you would get with only the rs2. Hope you get to get used to it.
Thanks for this man! This reminds me of the same problems I had with the Steadimate-S I tried last year. It killed my back and the whole rig was unwieldy. I didn’t bother trying to get better with it because of a separate issue, but it does seem like something I’ll have to practice with when I receive the Float. But the issues you’re facing don’t seem like a sign that the rig is faulty, just requires practice and technique.
The Steadicam Steadimate version still looked like shit even with a professional steadicam operator (see their videos). I tried to poorman's version using the glidecam and flycam vest with Zhyun Weebil Lab. I was not impressed with this set up in removing the up-down motion at all. Yes it does allow for specialized shot sticking through the car or rotating from bottom to top but that was not worth it for me.
I see a lot of back and forth movement small unnatural moments within the footage. Thanks for the info and your Video was great but not a fan of the stabilization look of the footage. Just me
I am very unhappy with the footage as well, I am really hoping it takes some practice to get better shots, I will definitely be making more vids with the progress
Jealous a little. Just practice and you will get better. Stradicams are all about time put in. Like driving a car. Footage was quite smooth especially for a first time. Just soften up your footsteps a little
Im kind of baffled by this video and by some of the responses. Does anyone seriously believe that getting the Tilta Float out of the box on its first outing will make you into Garret Brown, Larry McConkey or the late, great Ted Churchill?? Do we live in such an Insta-generation, that people think that film gear should be 'out of the box' perfect, and that no real grit and determination should be used to figure stuff out?? Getting to know your Tilta Float will take weeks. Weeks of figuring stuff out. Weeks of practice. Weeks of determining what works for you. Weeks of jury-rigging component parts to suit you. Head scratching. Swearing. Sweating. Trying. Trying again. It reminds me of that time i spent $100K on a Arri Alexa and a set of Arri Primes, and then got upset that after two days my footage wasn't looking like Roger Deakins............so i sent it all back....useless bit of kit!!! Seriously guys, what the hell is wrong with you lot???? Ohhhh and as the Tilta Float turns your DJI Ronin RS2 into a Steadicam or an Arri Trinity, best you get the Steadicam bible, Jerry Holway and Lurie Hayball's brilliant book on all things Steadicam. Have some guts and you will get all the glory. Give up five minutes in and you'll get nowhere in life
I mean there’s definitely no reason to be so aggressive but I totally agree with you besides all the negativity. This video was clearly not meant to be a review on the product, it was clearly stated that this is a video of someone opening the box for the first time and attempting to use it so others could see what their experience could be like and if it would be worth it for them to get into this world or not. The entire reason for getting the float for me wasn’t just for smooth shots, that can be achieved in plenty of different ways, it was to relieve any sort of lower back / hip pain, and unfortunately the float made everything exponentially worse. Do I think with the right mindset, time, and practice the float would be a great tool, yes, but I don’t think any amount of any of that can solve the pain the belt caused me.

Look, what people do with their views, post seeing your video isn't anything you can control however my initial view of your video was how negative you were about the Tilta Float rig. In regards to your back injury i hope you get it sorted. Being a lighting cameraman for 21 years, i've suffered from twisted hips, lower back pain and sciatic nerve on and off during my time (heavy cameras, long hours and bad lifting). In the past three years however after doubling down on 'core exercises' i've had zero issues and i'm 51 this year. I hope you get the back pain sorted as soon as you can 👍🏻👍🏻

No you have to buy your own, there are multiple battery options, you can even use the RS2 battery

I often use it with a 1foot carbon fiber rod between the tripod feet and the gimbal itself, just to have more to hold onto and raise the camera up when I need to. I was hoping the float was going to make it the complete package. sigh. Maybe Tilta will take note and improve the situation. Looking forward to seeing your progress.
Man I was going to make a separate "update" video of me just walking into a UPS and dropping that thing off but I bailed on the idea lol. It took me a while and I eventually got it balanced better, the float itself was super easy to balance even the first time, but the spring arm was where I was having the real problems. After reading some comments about using your body to counter the movements I was able to get it to a usable spot, but even with 3 days practice I found myself not liking the footage. On top of that, even if I did LOVE the footage I still would have returned it, the whole reason for buying it was to help ease my lower back and piriformis muscles in my hips, and that belt was making it exponentially worse in such a short period of time. I sent it back on Tuesday and I haven't heard anything from them sense, not really happy about that since I only like an hour away from their warehouse.
Wow. I had hopes that you might have cracked the code and turned into that Chinese ninja guy that convinced me to but this in the first place. Sigh.

I guess I’ll try the plate that Tilta sells that - I think! - allows you to mount it onto a typical steady cam
Dana, I’ve been researching this while I’m STILL waiting for my float to arrive.
I was able to become a member of the Tilta DJI ecosystem users group.
I shared my concerns with a guy named vaho mat who has a few video posts of him successfully working with the float. I corresponded with him and he commented that your belt adjustments where not correct. Again I’m just passing this info along; I do not yet have first hand experience!

“Hey Tom! You will need to adjust the rotation of the back part of the arm in order to adjust where the arm sits! More info can be found here. Also keep in mind that the Float is designed to be operated while keeping a hand on the bar that connects to the post, meaning you will be able to control exactly where the post sits in relation to your body by physically moving it with one hand. The idea is to adjust the balance so you don't have to fight it to keep it where you want it, but you will not be able to operate the system with no hands.”

Yea I sent that thing back hahahahaha. I didn't really end up getting great footage out of it and even if I did it HURT SO BAD to wear no matter how many different ways I tried it.

I have lower back problems as well, don't need a badly designed product to make it worse.

Oh sorry bro I actually returned it, I couldn’t ever get the shots to look good and even the dudes that are in love with their float’s shots aren’t what I am looking for. Even if I could get it to work right, the pain it caused my hips and lower back was not worth even the smoothest shot in the world

Just got mine today and I am experiencing the same issues. I managed to get the whole thing balanced quite well. Watched all of the Junior Lucano videos on YT on how to balance the Arri Trinity so that I would understand the concept. You / me should get better with practices... lots of it. Donno if it is worth it for what I do? Hmm...
Absolutely in the same boat, I am not giving up yet, but the whole point was to take stress of my back and this was infinitely worse

After seeing your video, I doubted I would buy one.
And after watching another video, I bought one and it works fine and I don't have back pain now.
However, I spent a lot of time figuring out my setup, and of course I also have a back pain at the start because the Float Tilta was very misconfigured.
After finding the right setup, all went well. And in the end the back pain was no longer relevant.
I come back to my question: Did you give up the Tilta float?

Hy, 16:20 wrong balance you must do "drop test" it must be 2-3 seconds. i mean the post must down from horizontal position to vertical about 2-3 seconds. Good luck
I purchased a Ronin MX in early February, when I heard about the Tilta Float a month later I instantly regretted buying the MX & not the RS2! The footage at the end of this video is terrible, I had faith in the Float, I guess ill get the RS2 for my BMPCC 6K & call it a day haha.

this rig seems like it would be great with an actual steadicam arm and vest. the rosette mount for the arm probably isn't strong enough to hold the torgue created from the arm. disappointing as this rig has a lot of potential
The Float is amazing. It’s ok to not be good at something right away. A lot of these comments are blaming the gear which is a bad habit to fall into and an inaccurate one here.
I want the float, but 100% holding off until this stuff is addressed. I've had issues with Tilta in the past with returns. I really want to like them, they seem to have cool products but this stuff and my return experience with them makes me think again about buying. With my return story, I learned to not buy direct from them. I will only buy their products from B&H who has an amazing sales team.
for now ill just stick to my Rs2 mounted to my gimbal ring and continue letting my easy rig do the heavy lifting

I made the same setup a long long time ago and I did not like it. I shoot weddings and I did not see myself wearing this. I see a number of issues in ur set up and id like to comment. First, you had a veryl lite set up. Due to this, the pole wasnt long enough to clear ur body. It should be almost ur height to have clearance. Also it was so light that the spring tension from the arms was too strong. having a heavier camera will loosen up the springs. 2nd, you are using a tri mount and not a sled . The feet for your trimount was hitting you. Third, you had a belt and not a brace. It led to a very unstable mount w/c did not stabilize the rig. the whole brace/vest/stabilizer look is all asthetics in my opinion. Devin graham only had the glidecam and he did not use a vest rig. Thanks for the honest video. Sorry it did not work for u.
The best definitely is not aesthetics, I have a steadicam pilot, and I could not hold that sled with one hand if I tried. It weighs around 25lb total. That’s a lot of wrist strain when trying to finess a shot

Thanks for this man! This reminds me of the same problems I had with the Steadimate-S I tried last year. It killed my back and the whole rig was unwieldy. I didn’t bother trying to get better with it because of a separate issue, but it does seem like something I’ll have to practice with when I receive the Float. But the issues you’re facing don’t seem like a sign that the rig is faulty, just requires practice and technique.

The Steadicam Steadimate version still looked like shit even with a professional steadicam operator (see their videos). I tried to poorman's version using the glidecam and flycam vest with Zhyun Weebil Lab. I was not impressed with this set up in removing the up-down motion at all. Yes it does allow for specialized shot sticking through the car or rotating from bottom to top but that was not worth it for me.

I am very unhappy with the footage as well, I am really hoping it takes some practice to get better shots, I will definitely be making more vids with the progress

Jealous a little. Just practice and you will get better. Stradicams are all about time put in. Like driving a car. Footage was quite smooth especially for a first time. Just soften up your footsteps a little
Im kind of baffled by this video and by some of the responses. Does anyone seriously believe that getting the Tilta Float out of the box on its first outing will make you into Garret Brown, Larry McConkey or the late, great Ted Churchill?? Do we live in such an Insta-generation, that people think that film gear should be 'out of the box' perfect, and that no real grit and determination should be used to figure stuff out?? Getting to know your Tilta Float will take weeks. Weeks of figuring stuff out. Weeks of practice. Weeks of determining what works for you. Weeks of jury-rigging component parts to suit you. Head scratching. Swearing. Sweating. Trying. Trying again. It reminds me of that time i spent $100K on a Arri Alexa and a set of Arri Primes, and then got upset that after two days my footage wasn't looking like Roger Deakins............so i sent it all back....useless bit of kit!!! Seriously guys, what the hell is wrong with you lot???? Ohhhh and as the Tilta Float turns your DJI Ronin RS2 into a Steadicam or an Arri Trinity, best you get the Steadicam bible, Jerry Holway and Lurie Hayball's brilliant book on all things Steadicam. Have some guts and you will get all the glory. Give up five minutes in and you'll get nowhere in life
I mean there’s definitely no reason to be so aggressive but I totally agree with you besides all the negativity. This video was clearly not meant to be a review on the product, it was clearly stated that this is a video of someone opening the box for the first time and attempting to use it so others could see what their experience could be like and if it would be worth it for them to get into this world or not. The entire reason for getting the float for me wasn’t just for smooth shots, that can be achieved in plenty of different ways, it was to relieve any sort of lower back / hip pain, and unfortunately the float made everything exponentially worse. Do I think with the right mindset, time, and practice the float would be a great tool, yes, but I don’t think any amount of any of that can solve the pain the belt caused me.

Look, what people do with their views, post seeing your video isn't anything you can control however my initial view of your video was how negative you were about the Tilta Float rig. In regards to your back injury i hope you get it sorted. Being a lighting cameraman for 21 years, i've suffered from twisted hips, lower back pain and sciatic nerve on and off during my time (heavy cameras, long hours and bad lifting). In the past three years however after doubling down on 'core exercises' i've had zero issues and i'm 51 this year. I hope you get the back pain sorted as soon as you can 👍🏻👍🏻

I know it was a year ago and I hope you got very good at it; I took the 5 day Pennsylvania workshop a few years ago and still watch those workshops on video..... even after I sold my big steadicam Archer....
