      Your friendship with Jerry was really touching and I wonder if any execution he managed caused a long and painful death by accident. In an older video about lethal injections (electric chair was topic too) John Oliver talked about flawed execution procedures prone to such errors. Your explanations why your own beliefs conflict with the death penalty are good reasons but I wished that problems in the educational requirements for execution personnel and that the attempt to make the execution look peacefully is often not the most pain avoiding and respectful way to end a human life are worth mentioning too.

      Why not present a balanced view of capital punishment?

    • @jogemuat
      @jogemuat 3 роки тому +5

      @@GQ2593 Scientifically, religious and economically the death penalty is a stupid idea. It is cheaper for the country to pay for prison cell and food for a criminal’s lifetime than paying the execution costs, there is no evidence that the deterrent effect has a positive influence on the criminals. Therefore, I agree the video is far too gentle with capital punishment to be called balanced. But I am very interested what pro death penalty arguments you would add.

      “Some states.....shouldn’t be states.” - Lewis Black
      It’s funny, but true. The level of ineptitude and corruption that one finds in these bureaucracies is staggering, to put it lightly. Even if you believe in capital punishment, these are not the people you entrust with the power to take life.

    I am Australian and in 1922 a man by the name of Colin Campbell Ross was executed for the murder of 12 year old Alma Tirtschke in Melbourne. His hanging was botched and it took 18 minutes for him to die. In 1993 a school teacher called Kevin Morgan looked into the case and reviewed evidence, saw information were kept from the courts and he had hair samples tested. In 2007 the Victorian Attorney General issued him a formal pardon. There is a beautiful picture of his niece receiving the pardon. He is the only executed person pardoned in Australia.

    Death penalty should be abolished for two reasons.
    1. If even one innocent person is executed then the death penalty can't justifiably work.
    2. It can't be delt fairly, consider that two different people can commit the same crime 80 miles apart but one gets 20 years and the other gets death makes no sense. Our justice system is entirely to vague and honestly fractured to deal justice fairly.

    • @jogemuat
      @jogemuat 3 роки тому +3

      I agree and want to add that lethal injections and the electric chair can be very cruel and cause incredible pain. John Oliver talked about this topic in depth. There is no right way to do it but allowing to let people that don't know what they do inject a sedative instead of narcotics which won't prevent the pain just to make a execution look more peaceful is just wrong.

      @@jogemuat I agree with you 100 percent, I also watched that segment on John Oliver's show. It talked about all the botched executions over the years as well which the numbers are just insane. So many reasons why the death penalty is a terrible method of serving justice.

    • @jogemuat
      @jogemuat 3 роки тому

      @@finlanddoesnotexist92 I am aware that an overdose of drugs can be used for a death penalty. However there have been tries (maybe not with this particular drug) that did go horribly wrong. Some survived and had a lot of pain, in some cases a gun shot in the head would have been less painful but that doesn't look good and would cause people to rethink if that is really the right way.
      If a prisoner kills other prisoners solitary confinement is probably a good strategy. If a prison seriously cannot remove potential weapons in advance, I wonder how doctors handle patients that are suicidal. I am sure they can learn from them if that really happens that often.

  • @jogemuat
    @jogemuat 3 роки тому +23

    It is cheaper that the criminal spends the rest of his life in prison than paying the execution cost. That should be reason enough, even if you don't have morals.

    • @jogemuat
      @jogemuat 3 роки тому +3

      @@GQ2593 Interesting thought, I did not think about that it might make private prisons more common. I know multiple stories about prisons (private and public) cheap at food because not spent money is not restricted to be used for other purposes. That includes unnecessary luxury exclusively for guards or increasing the managers paycheck directly. I agree with you that not humane treatment in prisons is a big problem but there is probably a better way to solve those problems than death penalty.

His story is amazing and I can't imagine the things that he's seen and been through. I couldn't imagine pushing a button that would send 2500 volts into another person, for nearly two whole minutes.
