Came back to this video after watching it 12 years ago. Chris is an amazing guitar player and definitely an influence on how i play today.
For anybody who wants to know the intro song, it's Whales by Scale the summit
thanks fam
Golden Rule: To be in a modern prog band, one of your guitarists has to play a 7 string JP signature (e.g. Mark Holcomb, Travis LeVrier, Aaron Marshall)
Now it's a Strandberg Boden
OneFragLeft or a Keisel
Scale the summit has such a unique sound. Captivating, enchanting, mesmerizing; take your pick.
This is just beautiful
ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL INSTRUMENTAL BAND!!!
Great band. My band is playing with these guys in February in Orlando. Saw them in St. Pete with BTBAM awhile ago as well, great show.
I like how you really see what your missing when you the bass isn't present. If that makes sense
I agree. Bass guitar is unnecessary for making good music.
DANTRON He was stating the opposite, that without their bass player it is lacking. Which is true with STS, because hteir bass player is not being a boring normal bass player that just plays the notes the guitar players are playing but an octave lower. However with a much heavier band, where the guitars are just dominating the air waves, I never notice the bass player unless I actually try and listen just for it, lol.
Mike Scanlan Oh I see. I haven't heard the actual song, but was blown away by this video. I don't like it when bass over influences the way a song sounds on a high output sound system. The only vibration I want to feel is from the kick drum.
You're missing you're*

Hey there, got your Bachelors in YT grammar huh?
makes me fall in love with guitar all over again
Great work! I love this song. I'm listening to it all day long..... For weeks, from now 🙏
Possibly the prettiest song on the new album...these boys will go far
love this song
Psh! Who needs picks?
THIS SONG COULD BRING WORLD PEACE!!!
26 year old Chris lookin good with the bowl
That song is also by Scale the Summit, and it's called Whales. They have a really good video playthrough of it here on UA-cam.
i was fortunate enough to have my grandmother be in town and buy one for me as sort of a going to college present. i don't think i'll ever need another guitar it's perfect. i'll definitely get more in the future, but it will never be to upgrade, only for fun really.
these dudes are phenomenal and Travis is such a fucking nice guy. Can't wait to see them again.
Can't believe I hadn't heard of these guys. Glad I stumbled upon this video!
Absolutely one of my favorite tunes from the best emerging band today.
this inspired me to make a tapping song, and its comin out great
I saw these guys with protest the hero and last chance to reason plus i got to meet chris such a cool guy...
beautiful.
I first started listening to these guys on MySpace 😂👏
what great guitarists... what a great band!
this is soooo....
wonderful
This is a really great song.
It is. As far as I know, all their songs are played in standard tuning on seven-string guitars.
gorgeous
It's awesome how the two guitars compliment each other in this piece. Now I just need a guitar playing buddy to write stuff like this with me.
Beautiful...
great stuff!
almost makes me cry :'(
BTW good luck on tour, hope you make it back by Christmas!!!
Damn did they go to college for this? If not that's immense talent. You don't hear people play with this kind of emotion anymore. It takes a lot of time and skill to write music like this..
They went to MI Musicians Institute
This fucking blew my mind when I saw it live. My new favorite song.
I like this version of the song more than the studio version. Totally different dynamic, and it shows how in sync they are.
@AgentSpiral
Chris said he did study music at college, but when he writes he doesn't actively use theory most of the time. I think maybe he just has an incredible ear for melody.
GOD DAYUMN THERE AMAZING !!
starts on the low"b"
:(
10thlevel80 Exactly what I thought...
ah its not to hard to transcribe though
It isn't... but doesn't sound as nice :(
yeah i know :( but i aint got the money to be splashing out on a new guitar :P just bought one this month and saving up for a 7 string soon :D
+10thlevel80 I bought a 7 string one year ago and I didn't use it as much as I tought until a found these guys out and they made me want to pick it up more often. great style for 7 string. refreshing
wow great masterclass!
I love this version so much more than the album.
so friggen beautiful
@shredder6078 I'm seeing them in may so pumped.
This is my favorite song of all time!!! I bought a 7 just to learn to play (like) this! YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! P.s. COME TO SAVANNAH
This band is awesome!!!
technical and simple at the same time.
@StarFaukes it's a 7 string, count the machineheads on the headstock
The tapping from 7:32 onwards where he guides us through his warm up, reminds me of Tosin Abasi in a way.
@tcmr Chris said that, on his 8-string, he tunes it like a 7, but with an extra high G.
@Mohamed636 it's from their song 'Whales'
That was fucking magical.
pretty neat stuff!
@AgentSpiral I believe Tosin Abasi went to music school, however I'm not sure if these guys did. I wouldn't be surprised if they did, but y'know it's hard to teach how to put emotion into music, and in my experience, if you put too much music theory into it, then it loses emotion. There's a good saying: "Learn the theory, then throw it out the window". You learn the technical sutff so that you know what you're doing, and then you disregard it in favor of emotion and what sounds good to you.
this is the epitome of modern music
their riffs are very moving
Tremendous.
epic sir!
@jayfraser 0987. thanx a lot man. i heard that solo in the song and i just told my self i have to learn that shit. i just got some bareknuckle aftermath pickups in my seven string so imma try them out.
Seeing them play makes me think they should be in tuxedos at some grand opera house.
These guys would kick ass playing the Chapman Stick!!
im guessing this is all with a clean tone, Right?
this tapping style only works with clean tones
@@hms2407 Sammy Boller can do it with distortion as well ,Sarah longford too
when are you coming to new york/tristate area. i missed you guys in september.
do the guitarists feel the same way i feel when listening to it? or more empowering since they are producing this beautiful piece of art ?
13,000 views and no dislikes yet?! There's hope for this world after all!
Whales. It is on the album The Collective.
@dragonreborn7 Other than AAL which has been said, there's After The Burial, and I think Born of Osiris said there were going to use 8 strings at some point if they didn't already
I think they're replying to the dude who asked about the song in the beginning of the video.
This guy can actually explain things :D
The solo section off the song "Whales".
im smiling so big.
Very first song is called whales. I never heard these guys til I seem this video. Immediately bought the album. Unfortunately not exactly what I was hoping for but good musicians for sure.
I have always said you need no further proof to the fact that the Grammys are shit is the fact that Opeth, in their 23 years of making music, have never been nominated, while in a single Opeth album they can make music spanning several genres, that is better written than music made by people who only play a single style. Even if you don't enjoy Opeth, they are one of the most talented group of musicians in existence. There are many bands, Scale the Summit included, that deserve so much more.
props, buddies.
the song is called "whales". it's off the album "the collective" man! :)
@Deadmau5x420 I was there too! And I agree it was a good show.
@hiddenoath lol, sorry for nerding out on you, I kinda know way too much about guitarists and their gear :P
@IbanezShreds
The 7 has a low B in this video, I think they use a high A on their 8s.
@MrKillianDude He's talking about them separately I think. Skill coming from from learning, emotion coming from being awesome
@dragonreborn7 i know this isnt djent prog or anything but whitechapel uses 8's and the acacia strain does now, all the other bands people have said except born of osiris only uses 7's molotov solution uses 8's too, and a lot more i cant remember
@Raven5620
Its a track called "Whales"
Its not alpenglow
Awesome video, btw whats the name of the song at the intro?
@hiddenoath Nah, that's his custom 7. He does however have TWO custom 8's both from Mike, the Blue Bomber and the one with the quilted maple (not sure) top.
Why aren't these guys at spotify?!?!
So I assume the tuning is, starting from the lowest-gauge string, is B-E-A-D-G-B-e.
Is this correct? Usually I see the seventh string tuned to something else so I wasn't quite certain! :)
Yes. That's how they tune, I have a tab book by them.
Thanks. And sweet!! That must be awesome. Where did you get it?
Noah McCoy You can get it from their official online store, make sure to check that out if you want to get one. :)
Then F# and so on..
@alexismorche Chris is really nice to his fan.. He even take the time to properly reply a question from fans which surprise me, since not lot of band do that kind of thing. Go to his channel and add him on Facebook and you'll see what i mean.
@StarFaukes It's an extra high string
What brand guitar is on the left? that looks pretty awesome
2:42 - 3:00 So good.
Why have these guys removed all of their tabs from the internet, damnit.
Checked out your vids. Great stuff you've got there. Subbed :)
The opening riff sounds like it was inspired by Satriani's 'Day at the Beach' for sure...
@Iliketacos091 I know Chris went to Burklee ...pretty sure Travis did too
impressive
@bubsadoozy fyi, they only have 7 strings each, the only band i can think of off the top of my head is Meshuggah
How do they tap so cleanly?
@AgentSpiral yeah they did. Berklee i think :O
@trollzillalolol It's from a song called "Whales" Off of "The Collective"
I love where guitar is going. People like this are pushing the limits. I almost feel like 8 strings is going to become standard soon.
This comment aged quite well
Lead sounds Vai inspired. I like this.
