Crazy how, eight years later, Sentient Glow made it on a Periphery album. One of my favourite songs by Haunted Shores/Periphery. Mark is also my likely biggest guitar influence. These two videos were a massive inspiration for me back when I discovered them.
"This tuning I learned from Misha Mansoor, who learned it from Nolly Getgood from the band so and so". Its crazy how it almost seems like certain people are meant to be great, they just aren't in the right places yet. Makes me wonder what made all those dudes decide to just become their own band.
I know I'm 4 years late, but Periphery was already a band at this point, but Nolly and Mark weren't in it yet, haha. I don't know if this was general knowledge 4 years ago or not.
I really like this guy's candor about how he doesn't know theory but yet he writes creative, melodic, intricately layered riffs. I know theory, but imo you don't need to know as much as people think to be able to pull of great music. At the end of the day it's more feel and ear than anything, though people hate to admit that because you can't teach it/learn it.
Absolutely. I found them back when they put their first EP out (the one with Separate and Coalesce) and instantly fell in love. They deserve to be so much bigger than they are. Such talented dudes.
Lol love how Periphery, Haunted Shores, OMNOM, Misha's side projects as Bulb and even Red Seas Fire are ALL connected. Such a wonderful collection of amazing musicians.
The name of the tuning would be "Open Cadd9" since it has a major 3rd (E, the 4th string) and a 9th(D, the first string). The other four strings are either C(root note) or G (fifth note), thus making the tuning open Cadd9.
Elliot Coleman former singer of sky eats airplane was briefly in tesseract. He's the one who recorded the acoustic inspired EP but left shortly after that so we never actually got to hear him sing his own lyrics and/or melodies. Tesseract now has Ashe O'hare i believe and he's recording the next LP with them.
@Neltheros Yeah knowing theory is sometimes a trap, you feel a need to start writing in a particular key or stay very tonal, which is often not a good thing.
Erra came from my home town. Good ass band. Jesse the guitarist that does the clean singing use to be in a melodic death medal band called By Blood And Iron, they're not together anymore but they have some good songs. Well pretty much every one in erra was in BBAI, the drummer Alex, bassist Adam (he played keyboard), and Jesse (guitar).
Sometimes I always feel like I need to know theory in order to be a good writer, but hearing the fact that he doesn't know theory is pretty awesome. I just wish I knew where to begin to get to a stage where I can write stuff like this.
Members of Periphery, Hauted Shores, Red Seas Fire, Sky Eats Airplane, Tesseract wrote Scarlet, FUCK! Its like every modern metal band lives in one neighborhood and writes songs together
so, scarlett was created by ... Haunted Shores? (mainly this guy) ... And ... you, Mark are my new favorite guitarist ! when you say, i don't know theory, but it just feels right.... that's like me haha...
You went over to Misha's house.......Misha has a house?!?!?! D= hahah no but that's awesome you two got to just go write together. Love me some Haunted shores!
I "know theory" but it doesn't mean anything really outside the context of classical music; theory only gives guidelines, you can't guarantee something will sound pleasing just because it was written theoretically.
Haunted Shores is Mark's "side project" that he uses as a way to express all his ideas that kind of get rejected from Periphery. There's 6 guys in periphery and they sort of vote on what makes it to the album, so when he has an idea but it doesnt fit into anything the rest of the band are working on, he'll put a pin in it and work on the rest of it on his own.
the only reason i wish he knew theory is so he could tell me the chords he's playing so i can build them myself haha. im no theory snob. i play much more from feel but i do know a bit of theory
@spoofy1337 so its impossible to know what youre doing without knowing theory? if thats your experience I am sorry for you. all you need to know is the fretboard and you're ready to go, just like this guy. he does not know theory but writes 1000 times better than pretty much anyone who gets on here and is like "he doesnt know theory". thats my 2 cents. but of course you can be as "theory" as you want, still does not make you a good musician if at all a musician.
@danielrevollo guess its like, he's spent shit loads of time just thinking up awesome guitar lines. He knows how to play like that becausse hes learnt his influences well just by copyinng songs and just puttin it into his own practice lol

There is so much clarity in his chords. Not one note is lost!
Mark is one of my favorite guitarists.
This guy writes the most beautiful, creative riffs ever.

I know, right ? I think it's what makes Periphery special, the 'whole is greater than the some of it's parts' so to speak.
I know I'm 4 years late, but Periphery was already a band at this point, but Nolly and Mark weren't in it yet, haha. I don't know if this was general knowledge 4 years ago or not.
@@Timmsie95 i'm learning about this just now
Periphery has actually been around for a super long time. Misha started the band in 2004
2:28 13 years later... This is pure gold. Never forget your beginnings.

Theory will never harm your "creativity" as a musician.

And Sky Eats Airplane
Mark Holcomb you are tremendous!!! such a fantastic guitarist, you are an inspiration to me in way you will never know!!!!
Amazing tone going on.

quite possibly the best riffage i have ever witnessed
Thanks a lot mark. You da man for teaching us how to play your songs, and guitar messenger.👍
best chord progressions i've heard
is that a Carvin Holdsworth signature?
btw that riffing style reminds me of Ryan Morgan from misery signals
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who leaves their three free fingers extended while they strum. THE CLAW TECHNIQUE!!!!
Such an underated player.
He uses an Axe Fx Ultra if i'm not mistaken. It's the same unit that Periphery plays.
The tuning for scarlet is CGCEGD

me too...ddue everything i write i dedicate and show my inspiration to him.... he inspires me to to play like them
Open C always has that drop C bit in it, what you described is just as he said, open Cadd9
periphery is an all star band
Thanks a lot dude :)
Erra is amazing, underrated
A lot of the time it is humming something in your head and then figuring it out on guitar, or just messing around on the guitar and liking it
these riffing styles has already been applied by bands like Misery Signals & Shai Hulud, proggy dissonant chords, ambients, reverby chord voicings
I'm assuming most of you watching this enjoy this style of music as much as me, so if I'm correct, check out the band Erra. :)
Check out my guitar cover of Scarlet in HD!
sentient glow = best piece of music ever imho.
wait, i know misha and marc came from haunted shores and nolly came from Red Seas Fire but who was in Tesseract?
Can anyone tell me what the tuning is that he uses for Scarlet. I will be forever in your debt :)
annother band that does this is heart in hand (melodic hardcore) but they use a lot of bigger chords and its nice
Did Nolly have a hand in writing it? :S I figured he was out of that circle until more recently!
Charvel :) Not sure which exact one though?
Does anyone know What model guitar Mark is playing here ?
it'S drop C with the "g" and "b" tuned down another whole step
what guitar is that it looks and sounds amazing
@TheDavisLavis CGCEGD aka open Cadd9
holy shit...what pick ups???
He played in Red Seas Fire.
@scottyburry This guy is a fukin wizard, honestly the best semi-technical riffs EVAR!!
@Krauser1226 i totally agree. great artists such as mikael akerfeldt, jeff loomis and the beatles (all 4 of them) dont know any theory at all!
Members of Periphery, Hauted Shores, Red Seas Fire, Sky Eats Airplane, Tesseract wrote Scarlet, FUCK! Its like every modern metal band lives in one neighborhood and writes songs together
@TheCornKings Scarlet
What pickups are on that carvin?
Ehtesham Ali Moeen they're so ballsy yet have so much clarity, I really wanna know too. I'm guessing they're Duncans
How old is Mrak in this video ?
My gawdddddd he looks like a cool kid xD!!
so, scarlett was created by ... Haunted Shores? (mainly this guy) ... And ... you, Mark are my new favorite guitarist ! when you say, i don't know theory, but it just feels right.... that's like me haha...
*like him
He´s a God!!
What amp does he use? I'm f***ing desperate about getting that tone :D
You went over to Misha's house.......Misha has a house?!?!?! D= hahah no but that's awesome you two got to just go write together. Love me some Haunted shores!
League of extraordinary Djentlemen
he's a half filipino, im proud of him...
Sentient Glow!!!!!!!!
I hear a little bit of The Way The News Goes!! 7:00
what amp are you using for this demo?
what's the tuning of mraks guitar?
@guitarholic777 Yes i do no that, Im a old friend from bmore.
woot nolly!!!!!
I "know theory" but it doesn't mean anything really outside the context of classical music; theory only gives guidelines, you can't guarantee something will sound pleasing just because it was written theoretically.
fuck this is all soo good!
@Thrashman1990 Shows how much you know.
what is the difference between haunted shores and periphery?
Haunted Shores was a separate band with just Mark and Misha.
thanks for answering.
***** Still is, on his twitch stream misha played a demo of new stuff from Haunted Smores and i honestly dug it more than the Jugg riffage.
Haunted Shores is Mark's "side project" that he uses as a way to express all his ideas that kind of get rejected from Periphery. There's 6 guys in periphery and they sort of vote on what makes it to the album, so when he has an idea but it doesnt fit into anything the rest of the band are working on, he'll put a pin in it and work on the rest of it on his own.
this project has to become a real band it is fuckin awsome
Finally, tasty riffs instead of chuga-chug-chug-chug-chuga-chug...
Does anyone know what amp he is using?
More than likely and Axe Fx.
UnlinealHand surprisingly a real 5150!
UnlinealHand sounds too messy for axe, real amp for sure.
@danielrevollo i watched an interview, he knows a surprising amount, jst not names really hahah
7:20 "or maybe like a quarter step-"(plays guitar)
"-bend."
Yup so it looks like The Scarecrow is a guitarist now
look below your comment
I like to think of them as being a prog/metal Justice League
mark is boss
lol Its this bend thats like a half step bend, or maybe like a quarter step (chug chuggedy chug chug) ...bend.
@adj209 Nice trolling.
How many fucking tunings do they use?!?!?!?!?!?!
i love mracky no homo
Don't forget AAL.
skarlet :3
im confused about his citizenship @_@ , i saw it on facebook i dunno if its his real account or what .. PINOY @_@
the only reason i wish he knew theory is so he could tell me the chords he's playing so i can build them myself haha. im no theory snob. i play much more from feel but i do know a bit of theory

He's A Fucking Filipino!:) Respect!
Too bad the Guitar has so much bite on the high end, makes it hard to actuallly hear the notes ):
like this if you totally expected him to say Periphery!
Mrak seemed like he didn't wanna be thur :P
FILIPINO FLEXES
lol
@danielrevollo Forget playing. How the fuck do you compose like that without knowing music theory! :O
hes better than misha
"Hi I'm Mark from Haunter Shores."
*plays Periphery riff*
it actually originated as a Haunted Shores song.
William Preston
exactly, and at this time they didnt use this song for periphery yet
You lose.
LOL "Hello I'm Mark from Haunted Shores."
Was asked to join Periphery, decided to use Scarlet for P 2.
Research before commenting. :D
Chazz Robbo Not sure what I need to research, my statement is true.
Carvin rather, its a Carvin HF2 Fatboy :P
how the fock u play like that without knowing theory? O_O
@danielrevollo guess its like, he's spent shit loads of time just thinking up awesome guitar lines. He knows how to play like that becausse hes learnt his influences well just by copyinng songs and just puttin it into his own practice lol
He's good. But all of it sounds the same. It's like chug chug chug, really cool ambient chord, chug chug chug
