Song: Anchor
Artist: Daniel Doss
Today I want to show you an amazing delay trick that I’ve used on vocals for almost every album I’ve mixed over the last 5 years. The cool part about this is there are 3 steps to get it. It is not a traditional delay trick, that you’re using automation, or anything like that, and you do need the 3-part combo to do what it does.
The song we are working on today is a song that I mixed about a year and a half ago for the artist Daniel Doss called “Anchor of My Soul”. The cool part about this track is its an incredibly emotional, very ambient track and it needed to have a unique vocal effect on it that wasn’t just reverb, and wasn’t delay. I didn’t want to hear the repeats on the vocal. For this song, the main challenge was to create this depth in the vocal that didn’t sound wet, but at the same time felt very in your face, because Daniel’s voice is incredibly strong, but still without feeling overpowering. I wanted to soften it and I wanted to keep it in an ethereal kind of space, but I didn’t want to be too cliché in using presets that are out there that do these ping pong things that I don’t like to hear.
So, in order to get the effect that I wanted, I created this template that I do with sidechaining, a delay, and reverb. What those three things do, when they are all combined, is it create this ambience that lets me get the very punchy vocal that I want out of the vocal take, and then when the vocalist is done, the blooming of the delay comes up into the reverb and sends it in, and it’s this really dense, really over the top kind of reverb that doesn’t sound like it is too much.

What are your favorite tricks for mixing vocals?
Parallel compression works wonders. Also de-essing the reverb fx (send effect, de-ess before reverb) That way the esses do not catch unneeded attention in reverb tails.
@@efnerva664 YES de-essing before the reverb is my favorite thing to do
@@J_Costa15 Glad to hear I'm not the only one doing it.
Cool trick is to add a vocal Doubler before any Delay with an Abbey road Eq at the end adds xtra depth and character to vocals.😁
I just discovered the Manny Maroquin triple D from waves. On some vocals, the de-harsher is a godsend tool that just does what it does so perfectly and smooths everything out. When I get vocals I didn't track and can't re-record it can really save a session.
Marc Daniel Nelson is rapidly becoming a favorite of mine thanks to these videos. Thank you.
One vocal "trick" I use - use two sends - one to a stereo plate, one to a mono plate with a longer decay. As the stereo plate decays, the reverb seems to tail off into the center.
Interesting! Worth a try. Even the other way around could be cool
@@HollerAtcherBoi Yes, you can certainly do it either way. I like the first way, because it keeps the focal feeling centered for me but definitely either way works. May not be quite as noticeable though because the stereo will sort of fill in the areas where the mono was.
That's a cool trick. Would sound nice on a ballad.
Wow, i like that. Thx mate
Whoah, cool idea! I definitely am going to try that.
It feels like engineers are the rare few that actually have integrity in the music biz. Don’t have to sell their soul and have the freedom to stay real to their love.
i dig it !!!
Absolutely correct
just what i was thinking
I love that
I like Marc. Every time he opens up a mix, I'm super impressed by the amazing sounds he achieves!
When the camera switches to view him sitting in his room from above, you really can appreciate how great Marc is at presenting to camera. It feel like he's talking directly to you. Love these videos and thank you so much for making them available
Pretty "Rad" indeed! My trick learned this week: copy the vocals to another track, compress the hell out of it and add saturation, blend in with original vocal as needed, til the vocal pops out. Cheers!
Scheps rear bus on vocals. Nice. Try it on your drums too.
@@Skykingsound yes or the other trick from Andrew which is similar: copy the vocal (or just use a send to a bus), use an EQ to filter out the low and bump the highs, compress that to hell with an opto compressor, optionally add another EQ to get the low end back. It's basically like a multi-band compressor where you are compressing the mid-hi's in order to get that stuff to cut through and make the words better stick out.
@@santibanks Oh well that's fun! I wonder how that'd sound on acoustic guitar.
Indeed. That’s parallel compression
@@HollerAtcherBoi when I was first starting out, id either confuse parallel compression and side chain or think they were the same thing. Nothing sounded too good until I figured out how wrong I was.
Sounds beautiful
As soon as you described this, I simple thought "Of course!" Absolutely brilliant, thank you!
Marc’s an amazing teacher, I love how chilled, focused and valuable his lessons are. Wish I could afford to join the full courses.
This guy knows his stuff. Salute to the true audio engineers.
I know the technique - but when Daniel dials it in, it's automatically the real deal.
I love how the reverb tail is huge but the compressor puts it out of the way when the next line begins. Basically the tail is always as long as it needs to be. Not too long, not too short!
One of the best vocal sounds I’ve heard in a long time. GREAT job
the dog in the background is enjoying his life
Love his little boots!
you professionals just teaching us.. just giving it away. thank you so much. i can't stand it. i'm CRYING. D:
ok, i'm not really crying.. but thank you so much!!
Thanks ever so much
Amazing, thanks Marc I will try it out
Thank you Warren for partnering with Marc Daniel Nelson and bringing him on board your channel. Great tutorials from an expect that are truly appreciated. I'm a Reaper user so unable to use the presets he offers but enjoying the learning curve still the same. Your channel is always 1st class but Marc adds a lot of experience and knowledge he seems more than willing to share. Great work.
Marc is a mad scientist genius. Love his videos here!
This is a great illustration of your skill. A wet signal is always more "wet" sounding and effective when it's next to something dry. Thanks, Marc, for sharing your techniques.
Gorgeous technique, Marc - perfect blend of pointillism & impressionism, audio-wise. Thanks as always to you & Warren!
Very cool tip! Thanks Marc and PLAP!
This intro is so clean, transparent and massive! Wonderful song too, Thanks for this!
I actually came to this technique by myself when I need to have huge long ambience for a voice, thank you for explanations of how it’s actually working, so now I can improve it 🙏🙏🙏😊
Always excited to see another Marc Daniel Nelson vid! I'd never heard of him before he was on this channel, but I've become a fan :)
your name is in the same league somehow... the way it flows rhythmically...Please post videos also!
@@massivebeatzz What a nice thing to say; thank you :) Actually, I've been studying youtube A LOT and just updated my profile pic and banner. I want to start uploading more regularly-- and hopefully soon.
This picture quality is INCREDIBLE!!!
And yet ironically on a video about vocals - the video was slightly off with the audio.. lol
I love this guy, thanks for having him on! He is becoming one of my favorites. I love this song Anchor! I will have some similar stuff coming out soon and hope to send it you guys way and let you do your thing! Top notch pro’s!
I just played keys on Daniel’s latest Christmas single! So cool to see his voice featured here.
Hey, Jed! I work for Jason at Tate Springs. Just thought it was cool seeing you in the comment section here, small world. I enjoyed hearing you come play a set down here last fall, you were phenomenal live and I enjoyed your album as well!
@@pastor_yoda man thank you so much! Very cool to see you here too. I’ve followed and learned quite a bit from Warren over the years. I’ve found I “fit in” better in the producer/engineer world more than the artist/singer world haha
I love that you’re Weimaraner’s always hanging out in the background. My dog likes to hang out in my room when I’m working too
Him and Warren are the Dream Team. Love this. Needed a trick just like it for my current mix! Fantastic inspiration!
I dig how you explain things in a way that encourages thinking along the lines to experiment
and this deal wont work with everything, but its a great feat.
Wow thats some quality content here, Daniel is the real deal
i'm so happy! because i can learn with masters of music!
Now record my own music becomes a dream into the reality!
thanks a lot!
Thanks ever so much
Thank you very much Marc. I really dig this AA lemon, didn't know about it.
The concept of ducking reverb and delays has been introduced to me by Warren in other videos but it's always nice to see another take on it done by other producers/engineers.
Great taste as always
Yet another solid tip from Marc - these never get old - looking forward to the one about pre-delay
Great tip!! 👍 btw You can add mid side dynamic Eq (Q3, F6...) before C2 and sidechain vocal to 1-5kHz freq on mid channel and compress it 2-3 dB to create even more space. 😊
Awesome trick, thanks for sharing with us. Stay blessed.
I love this technique. That delay sounds amazing!
Probably the best VOCAL sound I've heard in a video of this nature.
Binging all Marc Daniel Nelson videos after watching 2
Another great tip! Thanks Marc! Love all of your vids!
Every time I watch one of his videos it convinces me that Marc Daniel is the best mixer for my personal taste. Everything he does enhances the feel and vibe of whatever he works on. How is it possible to make amazing choices like that every single time?
What a timely video to pop up in my feed. We've just redone several vocal tracks in a proper studio and I knew I needed a blooming reverb on one of them but thought I was going to have to go into a complex automation chain switching a reverb on and off. Once again, thank you for a gold dust video.
Marc thanks for this tip. It took me a while to get my head around it but when I did, the sound especially over headphones is awesome.
Marc is a life changer for me
Thank you so much for having the time to do this for us ❤️🙏
Marc...despite what i may 'know', you always present in a philosophical/schematic way...and that sparks fresh perspectives which are so valuable. Delay>rev is always washy but from the early days of hardware, the dsp128 had parallel send from reverb>delay...simple building block that has stood the test of time esp.when delay timing is pattern based and you add limiter/over comp before the chain to take the edges off or swell the verb (diff space). Really appreciate you!
Yay, I like seeing the dog hanging out again, lazing away there on the couch. But wearing booties? Ok, now he's just showing off. Catnap slippers, perhaps? Also, thanks for the Tegeler recommendations from Marc and Warren, because it's hard to demo everything out there, so your recommendations are appreciated. Their Schwerkraft Mashine has become my new favorite mix bus comp. Gadzooks it's good! Another great video, too, so thanks for sharing your process. Mentoring is an open-hearted, kind gift and can be rare nowadays when so many are highly proprietary about their "secrets." Kudos to you two lads. Cheers
Really love watching Marc videos here! Thank you super duper much Warren!
I just automatically hit the like button on these now and then save them to my "PLAP MDN Gold playlist"
Cool ! Also works well the reverse way around with Side chain Gate to vocal, Lush vocals with reverb etc then gated in between words !!
I love using the Sonible smart:comp, somehow more natural ducking with it, takes down only the frequencies that are being used and leaves the „air“ around the vocal intact
I’ve incorporated into my new song busy finalising and it’s workings remarkably well, using Reaper DAW though and with different delay VST as I don’t have Acustica Audio Lemon VST, but getting great results. I also listened to the song Anchor you worked on and amazed how subtle you used it compared to this tutorial, but it’s sweet. Thanks for all these great tips and tricks!
May I ask how you set this up in reaper? The routing etc. I'm quite new to reaper so I'm not quite sure how to set up the send track.
@@marcusvallgren hi, it’s pretty straightforward, I route my channel strip group containing my vocals, to a new fx channel strip (bus) containing the delay plugin and a second routing again from the vocals group but now to input 3 & 4 for sidechain to the same fx channel strip (bus). Then I use a compressor plugin only receiving the sidechain (3 & 4) on that same fx strip for ducking so that the delays and reverb only has presence or “come alive” for the silent parts between phrases and lines in my vocals, this then prevents over-muddy delays and reverb. Have a listen to my song "Virtual Reality" on my UA-cam channel as well as "Sefanja" released earlier this year using Marc's brilliant technique, and you can clearly hear the difference against my older 2020 songs. Blessings!
One of the best Channels out here. Knowledge! I´m so thankful for that.
Thanks a lot Mr. Nelson and Mr. Huart.
This is such a cool sound. I can't wait to mess around and do something similar on a track
That's pretty cool. Being mainly a live sound guy, I tend to think of side-chaining in relation to bass and kick drum or vocals and instruments, keeping things that would get buried in a mix present. I never considered using it to let a dry vocal punch through and let the wet signal shimmer behind it. Thanks for sharing!
I am also excited to try this trick out in a live setting. I always feel like really pushing reverb & delay in a live setting just sounds out of place, but I can never get the tail to sound good at lower volumes. Adding the sidechain and pre-delay should really help get those nice reverb tails without sounding like the reverb plate is on stage with the band.
Wow sounds just heavenly !
Marvellous
I LOVE doing this! 🔥🔥🎯
8:10 "...a serious amount of creative sense..." I like this guy. Track sounds phenomenal!
Been doing something a lot like this for a few weeks now. Absolutely love it.
Excellent presentation. Ducking the verb... Seems so simple yet new idea for me. LOVE IT!
I was just playing with something like this last week. Of course my results weren't as good, but I get to try again. Thanks again for this series!
Thank you for teaching me this technique! I may not have or be able to afford these nicer plugins but I can still approximate the desired end by building the chain the same way and you know what? It sounds great!!! Thank You!!! 😃
Marcs skills are amazing. This is one of those tricks you want to keep to yourself but he is sharing it
Keying from vocals to duck the mush! Brilliant!
Great technique. Thanks for this
I've done something similar for our band's live mix. I basically used Vocal Rider from Waves to duck delay when there's vocal - the benefits of using plugins live, you can get crazy creative with your sound :)
Marc is my favorite tutor! I believe him, all the time!!!
Makes such good sense, Mark. Thank you for this; obviously used (or very similar) in almost all successful pop vox these days.
Love you Daniel ... You are becoming the favorite Secret Breaker in the Mixing Black Magic industry !!!
Can't wait to try this technique. Thanks Marc.
brilliant stuff Marc!! Compression for ducking on a verb/FX send is a MUST for serious pro level vocals with depth but still sitting right in front!! CHEERS!!!
Great processes Marc! Cannot wait for your next video
Mr. Nelson, This trick is amazing! I'd equate the effect to an amazingly customizable pre-delay. Only rather than strip the effect back in time to reveal a leading raw signal, the effects combination allows for controlling the volume of the effect applied to the raw signal in time. Brillant!
Thanks Daniel and Warren!
BIG FAN - Love your work. Brilliant and high quality / very pro (greatly color graded) videos!!!
very nice :)
The ducking makes so that the delay doesnt steal the spotlite for the active vocal. Only in the betweens. Makes the song more beautiful :)
What a great technique! I went and added a send to my mixing template for ducked vocal delay and reverb and I can't wait to use it on my next mix! Thanks Marc and Warren!
I need that hoodie.
The hoodie that every nerdy millennial low testosterone white guy would own.
They say the vst emulation is just as comfy
@@effector3659 yeah, I think waves has it at 40 percent off all year long. 29.99 marked down from 199.
@@Skykingsound no sweatshirt is worth that amount of $
@@ethanreed8400 It was more of a joke on the Waves plugin's permanent sale on everything at 29.99. But Yes, no sweatshirt is.
Oh wow, LOVE that song😮 and great mix. Thank you!
Thanks ever so much!
Fantastic tutorial, and a beautiful song to highlight it on. Cheers
3:05 👍 that sounds nice ...thanks for all info
Another fantastic and helpful episode, thanks for sharing MDN!!! 🤘
Thanks Marc. Great tutorial. You have quickly become my favorite online teacher for mixing.
Warren has become the Sherpa (a guru in his own right) leading us all up the mountain of boss levels like Marc Daniel Nelson - we are all just pilgrims - seeking knowledge of what they did not teach us up in college.
Wow! Thanks ever so much
Nice demo of a super musical technique that in the wrong hands (i.e. mine lol) could easily be over the top. Thanks!
Another amazing video from my favorite team.
I didn't know Al Pacino's son was a dope producer... haha! Great stuff!!!
Cool technique Marc! Cheers Warren!!
I really enjoy the episodes with Marc, so well presented with lots of inspiration - always wants me to go mix immediately!
Marc fantastic!!! love this kind of lush, big and spacious FX on Vocals. Thanks so much for the tip !!!
This guy is a god ! Easy teaching to take in !
Very nice trick ! Always cool to learn a few new tricks for vocals!
wow. just wow. Bravo!
Thanks ever so much!
Song hit Marc right in the feels
Marc is the best. Thanks PLAP!
Again thank you Marc for sharing!!!!
Great Tip! What a stunning song.
AWESOME! Thanks for sharing!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Very nicely explained. Great video as always Marc! :-)
Thanks Marc! You’re my hero and a total stud!!!!🤘
