    Following serious ill health, I took up Wet On Wet Painting 3 years ago. However, no matter how hard I tried, I still could not master even the basic steps - even after watching an immense number of videos. I became so frustrated in my painting that even tried advertising for private tutors, though without any success!!! I then stumbled on UA-cam tutorials featuring Paul Ranson. I now follow these tutorials significantly and am slowly gaining confidence in being capable of developing my own skillset. If I had the resources, I would invite this completely under-rated master (CRI) to my own city for personal 1 on 1 tutoring. Paul you are a very clever and master artist with an exceptional talent in tutoring. I enjoy thoroughly your tutorials and look forward to being able to glean experience from you to help me in my recovery process and getting back to enjoying w-o-w painting.

      Hey there Daryl - I'm delighted to read your finally getting to grips with your art. Finding and clicking with the right instructor is key. I was so very lucky to have had so many amazing teacher trainers from Bob Ross Inc to help me. Many of them were Bob's original crop of instructors. He taught them well. Its now my honour to pass on their skills with a few of my own. I wish you continued success and not too many pickles along the way. Paul 😃😃😎😎

      I too am recovering from illness, Multiple Sclerosis and consequential nerve problems. I realise that I cannot fully recover from MS but I am trying. I used to be a successful Artist in the 1970s and 1980s, until MS paralysed my body and memory. It completely wiped my memory and I completely forgot how to paint. You can imagine how depressed this made me. I have worked for over 20 years to try to get my ability back, and it is tutorials like this one and some others which are restoring my memory. I look forward to gleaning more lessons like this one until I can start painting originals again

      @@PaulRansonArt Paul, I’m really hooked on your work. I used to paint and was a police artist for 3 years doing portrait drawings from descriptions, then went back to working on the street for 16 years. Sadly I got slack and gave it all away. You’re inspiring me to get back into it once again. Thanks again Paul. You have a great voice that emulates Bob R. and that in itself provides inspiration. Take care my friend. Graeme.

      Hi Barbara - yes, you can use the acrylic paint for underpainting a scene as per my video. Obviously the acrylic is water mixable so needs to be completely dry before you over paint with oils. Also keep in mind the acrylic paint goes under the oils. It won't stick well if you try it the other way round. Oil paint remains oily for years and the acrylic simply flakes off. Happy painting - Paul 😃🥰

      @@PaulRansonArt Well Paul, your technique/skill level helps. As did the specific techniques used. To me the unexpected bit at the end, That glaze really finishes the painting off nicely. And it also really grabbed my interest, how lightly you applied it. Exciting ! I love your tip: " take your time" ! But I had to laugh at myself, because sometimes it seems I can rush one application, then days pass till the next. So I take your tip of taking time, but not be ridiculous about it lol !! And to get less erratic about time.
      I met a guy at the art store last Sunday. He has always wanted to try oil painting. From his photos he showed my wife and I, he seems quite prolific with acrylic. So by the time we got done talking, he left with a few tubes of Winton series oil paint and a tip to go visit 3 channels on youtube, yours included. The other two were Yovette's and Justin's channels. All three of you have inspired me, because you take time to explain certain methods. My wife loves your technique of oil over an acrylic base beyond the gesso. So in others words the darker base of the main subject being acrylic. Now also the colored gesso. She is painting one of yours in this series. It may be the first one you offered, so you may not have seen he post to you there. She also subscribed.

      @@davidg.5076 Hi David - ah yes taking your time. I find myself rushing about trying to get everything done so I can slow down and paint. The challenge is my mind slips back into overdrive when I'm not looking. In fact just learning to look is part of taking your time. The two go hand in hand. The last part of this trinity is seeing what we've done. Learn to turn your back on your work if only few 20 seconds can reveal a whole world we didn't know we had created. I deliberately sit with my back to the easel as I type this just to give my painting a rest from me! Then I glance back and see what I have painted for the 'first time'. Have a great week and thank you're lovely other half for subscribing and painting with me. Best wishes - Paul 😃😃😎😎

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  3 місяці тому

      Hi Mathew - the wet on wet canvas is really a key element to enable you to apply glazes and pull reflections. Without this your coming to be fighting a dry canvas that just wants to grab the colour and stain. Get a bottle of water mixable linseed oil and use this in place of clear. Its a lot thinner so go easy with it and use just enough to make the canvas just shiney. Than carry on the same way I did with the colours. Hope this helps - Paul 😃😃😎😎

    Acrylic underpainting is the secret sauce for a quicker painting as well. You can cover large areas with quick drying, cheaper paints, and then use the oils to give the shine to the painting. I once accidentally used acrylic white with oils. Wondered why my painting was nearly dry after lunch!

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  3 місяці тому +1

      Hi Tommy - its not a silly question at all. Buff titanium is a warm yellow tone - not always easy to see on camera. If I held a sheet of white paper against the canvas you would see the difference. Most paintings benefit from being painted on an off white canvas. Its easier to judge the colours when you're not staring at a glaring white canvas. I usually start with a light grey canvas. Hope this answers your question. OK - Burnt Sienna is a red-toned colour often seen as a brown colour. So to make a similar colour mix red with a little sap green or whatever green you have. You will need to experiment so add small amounts of green and look for a rich warm brown color. I nicknamed this Christmas Brown ( green holly leaves and red berries is how I remember this mixture ) Hope this helps - Paul 😃😍😎
