- I use the Bob Ross Technique to paint from photographs. AND It's not as complicated as you think. Complete step-by-step tutorial for beginners. It's easy to rub out those happy accidents and try again without wasting a canvas. 😃 What's not to like about that.
I use Bob Ross Oils and technique for this tutorial but other brands work well too.

Great tutorial Paul. I also paint from photographs, either ones that I have taken myself ,or images that I download from the internet. I was also delighted to hear you say that you don't try to paint an exact replica of the photograph but use your imagination to create your own masterpiece. Keep up the good work. Jack
Hi Jack - I'm blessed with a fertile imagination and dream up all sorts of scenes. Not only in paint but also in films. If only I had the editing skills. Ah well thank you for your kind comments as always. Keep on making those lovely paintings.
Great lesson Paul. Makes me think of Yorkshire/Cumbria with all the dry stone walls around there. I really enjoy your work. Thanks. Iowa, USA
Hi Deirdre - Yorkshire and the surrounding areas are a painters paradise. The scene was actually in Dorset but it could be anywhere 'up North' as we say. Have a great day in Iowa - Maybe I should paint a typical scene from there too 😃😃
UA-cam recommended I watch 👍🥰 wonderful how you walk us through atmospheric perspective 🎉 COOL new flat brush technique 😎👋 Thanks for sharing Paul
Hi Annie - Thank you for watching and the lovely comments too. I wanted to break out of my usual style for this painting and play with some different brushes too. I'll make some more tutorial like this in future. Big Art Hugs to you gals 😋😋😋
nice looking relaxed painting
Hi Steven - I'm pleased you enjoyed the tutorial. Lots more to come and more in this technique too. 😎
Beautiful work PAUL....
Thank you so much Gerard for your kind comment. More videos to come 😃
I like your version of the maul stick. ♥️ Brilliant painting 🎨
Thank you so much 😀Hugh. Designed more out of necessity as I get a little shakey these days. I'd like to add a bar above the canvas to hook it on to save it touching the canvas. I feel another Heath Robinson coming on 😃😎
Nice! A very serene scene. I love the long grass brush technique, plus the mahl stick (and pin to steady it). Thanks. Such a pretty studio assistant!
It's good to remember that Bob Ross techniques were often done for speed because of filming a half hour show. Letting the first layer dry a bit before adding the highlights helps immensely.
Hi Diane - thanks for stopping by and watching. My assistant is a joy to have around. Adding sound effects (cat flap) requires lots of practice and immediate rewards of kitty treats . I'm not on such a time crunch as Bob so yes a day to let a layer stiffen is a bonus if I have the time. Now, where is that 8th day of the week🤔🥰🥰
Absolutely stunning work Paul, WOW!! I too love the different techniques to take the BR style to the next level! I have also been watching a young artist by the name of Kevin Hill who started using Bobs style and puts out gorgeous work but he only shows bits and pieces requiring you to purchase his courses to learn it fully. That’s fine as they seem to be reasonably priced but it’s also a bit frustrating when you want to expand your skills on a budget, ya know? I guess I said all of that to let you know how much I appreciate all of the thought, time, energy and generosity you put into your tutorials sir, not to mention your considerable skill!
In my opinion your work is masterful! Thank you Paul and I owe you “a coffee” as soon as I can!!
Your friend in painting
Alan 🎨🙏♥️
Hey Alan - high praise indeed. Kevin is one of many very talented folk that give up their knowlage. But as Bob would say 'make a happy buck alomg the way' My happy bucks come in now and again too. Thanks for your support and encouragement. Something money can't buy - Paul 😃
Nice video Paul!
Thank you so much Andy. It was a long time in production but so enjoyable. I think I'll be doing more like this. 😃
Very beautiful painting. Thanks for the tutorial
Thank you for stopping by and leaving a nice comment. I have more videos to come so hope to see you soon 😃
Just discovered your painting videos, and I love them! Thank you, I'm learning so much! Your soothing voice is very nice as well!
Thank you so much for the kind comments. I delighted to hear you're enjoying my tutorials. I'm make more so hope to see you soon. 😍🤩
Fantastic video thank you so much for your helpful techniques. ♥️
You are so welcome Hgh. I enjoy exploring the world of art and hope to make a few more -from a photograph- tutorials this year 😃😎
Been waiting for this YAY
Your a sweetheart Sylvia 😊 Your support is so appreciated. I almost tried a rainbow in this scene but the video was already almost 30 mins so I have another project in mind for this. 😍😍
@Paul Ranson Art I shall wait for my rainbow 🌈 Paul in the meantime I'm learning so much from your videos and getting good results eeeeerrrrmmm well still working on the IRIS lol 😆
Looks beautiful Paul! Thank you for the video.
Thank you AY. Its a video I've been wanting to make for a while. If its a hit I'll make some more showing the same technique. I have a wonderful photo of a cliff that would work well I think 😍
@@PaulRansonArt I am certainly up for more videos like this one! I just got back from holiday in Greece and have some lovely photos of olive trees I would like to try and paint in oils so the more tips I can pickup the better! 😀 A cliff painting sounds like a great video idea.
Thanks for the video sir! Can’t wait for the next one. I wish I could show you how mine turned out!
Can you see the link to my Facebook page in the 'About' section at the top of the channel. You can post your picture there. I'd love to see the results too. 😍😍
Absolutely stunning
Thank you so much! I really enjoyed painting this classic english country side scene. But its so adaptable. Paint what you love using this technique - Best wishes - Paul 😃😍😎
@PaulRansonArt I remember doing something like this with Bob 30+ years ago.. I really enjoying watching yours
@@nessjilbert4283 Thanks Ness. I watched Bob all those years ago too. Little did I know that some years later I would become a Certified Ross Instructor and teach full time. Strange how our lives can turn out. Happy painting - Paul 😃😃😎😎
@@PaulRansonArt it's wonderful you did that . I myself paint 🎨 and enjoy trying anything that catches my eye
Thank you for your delightful channel
Very nice techniques applied here. The grass is excellent. I have had such a hard time with grass. Thanks for the video
Thank you. I try and gat as many different techniques in as possible. The long grass is an idea I picked up along the way and works a treat. More videos to come 😃
Very nice!! Thanks for the great tips.
Your very welcome Linda. It was such fun to paint and I might do some more like this in future. 😍
Beautiful!!!
Thank you Beverly 😘😎
Beautiful
This is fabulous Paul! Thank you for sharing all the different techniques you've learned throughout your painting journey. I especially appreciate that you teach us how to expand beyond the typical Bob Ross paintings and produce our own original paintings. Please keep sharing your original painting techniques. 😁
Hi Cheryl - thank you for taking the time to watch and support the channel. I absolutely love painting original works and sharing what I've found works the best. I'll be sure to add more of these to the channel. Have a great rest of the week 😍😍
Paul perfect painting next time uses a bigger canvas.
Thanks Bob. I prefer bigger canvases but they do have a few challenges when filming. Mainly getting them to fill the screen without loosing too much of the upclose detail. I will have a play with some other sizes in future. Hope to see you soon. 🤗
I’m glad YT suggested your channel, Paul. Your art is beautiful and so much detail. I love your techniques. I usually work in watercolour and watercolour pencils, but I shall give oils a go sometime. I have also worked in acrylics and gouache. Beautiful painting.
Thank you so much! Yes, I've played with all these too but keep coming back to my first love - oils. Having said that its a close run thing with the others 🤣 Have a go with oils some time. They can also be purchased in water mixable varieties too. Happy Painting, drawing pastels etc - Paul 😃 - is that Borley Rectory?
@@PaulRansonArt It's Borley Church, yes. Well spotted. 👍😃👻
@@borleyboo5613 I remember reading a book on the subject some years ago. I think the old rectory was demolished some time back. Might be wrong. 😃😃
@@PaulRansonArt Yes, Paul. It caught on fire and was demolished in 1939. I have read lots of books on Borley and…….I’ve visited the church yard at midnight with my equally bonkers family. 👻💀lol. I’ll paint the rectory one day……in oils. 👍😃
Fantastic!
Thank you Heather - more video tutorials to come 😃😃
Very cool to see an original composition ! And thank you for the good tips as always !
Thank you. I like to show how we can progress from the traditional Bob Ross painting and carry a few techniques forward. More videos to come. And if alls well a few more original paintings too. 🤩🤩
Mate, you do realize that very rarely would anyone give this knowledge for free especially for oil paints, acrylic is a different story. Keep up the good work, seriously :)
Also, i was wondering if it would be alright with you if I could send you some of my own work as Im curious whether you will like the style, I remember learning alot from your videos in the past
Hi DB nice to hear fom you. I hear what your saying about knowledge. But I would be a poorer person had I not had great teachers who passed their knowlege on to me. I guess I'm just paying it forwards ( do we still say that these days 😃 ) Just my take on things of course. Check out my FB page and post your work there. I'd like to see what your doing - Paul 😎
@@PaulRansonArt Sadly I dont have a Facebook (I might make one when im starting to sell paintings seriously) - Is it ok if I can I email them somewhere ?
@@Dedgyblazer hi - sadly I don't publish my email on here. My inbox would be full of spam in a heart beat. Set up a FB page and get used to using it for a while. Its not that intuitive ( well not to me it isn't 🤔🤔) Then I can see your work. 😃😃
This is a beautiful painting! I was wondering how you made the background appear so soft; almost like morning fog lifting away, or the beginning of an extra humid day. Either way the effect is amazing. So much learning here! Thank you! I was wondering how to do the extra bright “sparklers”.. it’s actually doable now!
Hi Stephanie - Thank you for your lovely comments and the 'coffee ' too 😉 Its just a matter of playing and taking your time. All in all the painting came together over 3 days plus a day or two drying. Then the movie stars stick easy and don't blend. New video out soon too. 🤗
@@PaulRansonArt looking forward to seeing the new video!! 🤗✨🖌️🎨✨
If I was to offer some constructive criticism it would be that talking at a near whisper makes it very hard to hear you. I had to jack up the volume quite loud to hear the commentary. Other than that, this was a great tutorial and I look forward to more videos.
Thank you for your comment. I'm naturally quite softly spoken. But I do take your point. I'll have a play with the audio levels on the next video. 😎😎
Is this done on a wet on wet canvas?
After the initial oil sketch which is done on a dry canvas its all wet on wet. 😊😎
