From Dio himself: The song has been called a "morality tale", and its lyrics are written from the standpoint of a "slave in Egyptian times", according to lyricist Ronnie James Dio. They relate the story of the Wizard, an astronomer who becomes "obsessed with the idea of flying" and enslaves a vast army of people to build him a tower from which he can take off and fly. The people hope for the day when their misery comes to an end, building the tower in harsh conditions ("In the heat and rain, with whips and chains; /just to see him fly, too many died"). In the end, the wizard climbs to the top of the tower but, instead of flying, falls down and dies: "no sound as he falls instead of rising. / Time standing still, then there's blood on the sand". The next song, "A Light in the Black", continues the story of the people who have lost all purpose after the Wizard's death "until they see the Light in the Dark", according to Dio.
You have just heard, quite possibly, the best metal song ever written. Opinions may vary.. but to me this song is epic of the highest level. Few songs can touch this performance in my mind. We lost a great man when Dio passed away. Peace

UOAbigail LeVey A great song. I consider Heaven and Hell the best metal song.
kevin paul halliday, Just because Blackmore’s tone doesn’t sound too heavy doesn’t mean it isn’t Metal. If you ask me, Stargazer is definitely a Metal epic.
Rainbow was a great band, Dio on vocals, one of the greatest rock guitarists ever with Ritchie Blackmore and one of the best rock drummers with Cozy Powell.
And Tony Carey on keyboards. There were 4 guys in that band who legitimately thought they were the star attraction. You can really hear that in the live version of Still I'm Sad from Rainbow "Live on Stage".
@@AssMonkeyGaming Yeah, it rains acid but doesn't reach the surface since it's too hot. Higher mountains there are covered with "snow" which reflects the light and the speculations are that they're made of metal ores.
@Pecker Dúnling San Patricio Space Dolphin Brigada it’s not a “duh” thing for people who aren’t musicians. He was just trying to explain for those who aren’t
@Vin & Sori : Stargazer is a song about hubris. People toil away in terrible conditions for years, dying like flies.. to help the "wizard" fly (because they "believe"). The wizard could probably be a metaphor for anything from a cult leader, false prophet, etc etc... then he tries to fly, and gets splattered.. people's hope is crushed.. then in the followup song (a light in the black) shows the renewal of hope.
A light in the black, is an absolute sensation. The band is in God mode for 8 minutes, and it's a perfect continuation of "Stargazer", musically and lyrically.
If you wanna hear what's arguably Blackmore's best guitar solo you should check out Rainbow's Gates of Babylon. And since you did Rainbow you should also check out Deep Purple, I'd suggest Child in Time or Burn. Just don't do Smoke on the Water, while very popular it doesn't even remotely show off what the band is capable of.
I would agree, but there are so so many moments of blackmore greatness. In every band incarnation he's been involved in there have always been moments of amazing glory.
Sori's a joy. Vin's ability to quickly dissect lyrics and pick up on spiritual metaphors is amazing, And Dio's a BEAST! Black Sabbath Children of the Sea! Dio The Last in Line! Would love to hear your take on those lyrics.
Favorite song of all time. Dio is a fucking legend. I love everything he does. Cozy Powell (the drummer) is fucking AMAZING on these albums, and Ritchie Blackmore (Guitarist. Vin laughing at the Wizard falling was awesome. Laughing at the cult leader is the greatest defense we all have against that brand of insanity. Wonderful reaction, as always.
Rainbow redefined Heavy Metal on 1976's 'Rising'. The long, epic track with symphonic influences starts with a short drum solo by the late great Cozy Powell, a "great drumming moment" frequently cited as an example of his skills. It features the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, a Vako Orchestron, and what Ritchie Blackmore called "a string thing all playing this half-Turkish Scale". Blackmore's solo, after the second verse, is in B Phrygian dominant scale, and is cited as "one of his best". There are loose ties to religion with the lyric borrowing from the Old Testament (a big Rock'n Roll thing) of The Tower of Babel. The story of the Pharaoh enslaving all these people in order to build a tower to Heaven so he could confront the God of Moses. An interesting fact was the name for the tour for this album was the Tower of Babel World Tour 1976. The people hope for the day when their misery comes to an end, as they build the tower in harsh conditions ("In the heat and rain, with whips and chains") just so they can see him fly, which gives them hope. In the end, the wizard falls off the tower and dies ("no sound as he falls instead of rising. Time standing still, then there's blood on the sand." The lyrics also have a covert meaning, which many people have interpreted as a warning not to believe in false idols or messiahs. It can also mean that one should not give up hope even in harsh circumstances.
Thank you for this piece of history. Much appreciated...Blackmore once quoted, during his touring with either DP or Rainbow at Bulgarian leg of touring, he stayed at hotel close to Turkey, he heard some oriental/ medieval riffs on radio, he was influenced by it certain extent.
Uma das mais perfeitas canções já feita na história da humanidade!!!! Ronnie James Dio mostra todo seu poder!!!! É impressionante a qualidade musical apresentada nessa canção!!!! Tudo em sua forma mais perfeita!!!!! Mas o grande destaque, o que faz essa canção ser épica é o vocal de Dio!!!!! Dio vive para sempre!!!!!! Imortal!!!!!!
From Wikipedia - Simon Magus - The apocryphal Acts of Peter gives a more elaborate tale of Simon Magus' death. Simon is performing magic in the Forum, and in order to prove himself to be a god, he levitates up into the air above the Forum. The apostle Peter prays to God to stop his flying, and he stops mid-air and falls into a place called "the Sacra Via" (meaning "Holy Way" in Latin), breaking his legs "in three parts". The previously non-hostile crowd then stones him. Now gravely injured, he had some people carry him on a bed at night from Rome to Ariccia, and was brought from there to Terracina to a person named Castor, who on accusations of sorcery was banished from Rome. The Acts then continue to say that he died "while being sorely cut by two physicians".[28]
Icarus, The Morningstar, Pharoah. Take your pick. People taken into bondage to build a monument to someone who sees himself as a God. He fails, his death brings them back their freedom. They been out in the desert so long they don't remember how long.
You can also make a connection to the beginnings of the so-called wizards and the priesthood. The song is called Stargazer. Stargazers had knowledge, that they then abused for power purposes at some point. (It is no coincidence that wizards often wear star cloaks) So the priesthood is not far away. I always think of the ziggurat pyramids when I hear that song. On top of one a priest who has raised himself to be a god.
i loved vin's reaction to the wizard plummeting to his death lol, rainbow with ritchie blackmore and dio was just too awesome, another good one of rainbow gates of babylon, suicidal tendencies you can't bring me down, rock on \m/
Y'all make me so happy. If you love Dio I have soooo many Rainbow songs with such a raw energy. Ronnie was such an amazing being that will never be seen in our lifetimes. The Shed, Rainbow Eyes, I'm Still Sad. It's tragic that even with all Dio has done, there is even more that goes unrecognized
This is the SONG! It's moving me every time... true epicness! you should react to "Gates of Babylon" from the Long Live Rock'n'Roll album, another legendary piece of work!
Well what to say about this..following someone who promises something...just to find out it is all a load of rubbish... building a temple to reach the sky to find out it’s all been worthless and then find yourself and then figure out it’s all been not worth it because you’ve had no free mind ...Christianity...or any religion...
Fun Fact: This song is about man, who believe that he can flying, but in step first he must jump from high, he enslaved many people to build a tower for nine years. When they managed to build a stone tower , he jump from that tower to die. The song is sung by one of the people who have been enslaved to build tower a few quotes "Too many die" "Where is your star? Is it far? Is it far? Is it far?" "Nine years worth of breaking my back"
These musicians are instrumental magicians. Tremendous storytellers who are harmonically in tune. Listen to the gates of Babylon. The violin tells a haunting tail of Time Passages gone bye. Listen to Stargazer again the drum intro is awesome. Along with all the rest. They are truly composers of great theatrical pieces of music.
I live in East Texas and although I know quite a few open-minded Christians, for every one of them there are ten VERY close-minded evangelicals. It's those people that are turning the younger generations away from organized religion.
Like sori said. This is a song of worship. The people are worshipping a wizard only they can see. He is bulding a gateway to the stars. Thats Why they keep asking him if the, stars are far. When they get close, enough to them, they fall from the,top and have to start over and over...... As sori also pointed out when the song gets to its climactic ending I also get goose bumps. Ive heard this song 100,000,000 times And it still happens
The song is about a wizard who wants to reach the sky so he can jump off and fly and all the people in the village are enslaved to help build a tower that's high enough they work for 9 years "with whips and chains just to see him fly" through the rough environment and while they all hate working and doing all of this they really want to see this wizard fly they then finish the tower and wizard gets to the top and jumps only to plumment to his death and all the village people are then left with a feeling of acomplishment and joy that they no longer had to work but at the same time they feel sad and depressed because all of it went to waste and they never saw him fly
I think you are missing the point of the end of the song. They actually believed in the wizard and had faith, then when he "falls instead of flying" they lose all faith but then "look on the horizon, I see a rainbow rising...time is standing still, giving me back my will..." The rainbow is the idea of the wizard transcending his mortal body, the rainbow being a spiritual symbol that the singer then finds his faith restored.
Good interpretations you both, but I will add to this that it also shows the world as we believe it with the values and what is real. All this suddenly falls, all the illusions, but a new world arises, a new system and we can relate that to today with our beliefs in the monetary system f.ex. When it falls then what? Then again it can also be understood on the personal psychological field. As our beliefs, or lives as we live it. Sometimes we live on lies of some kind, of convictions and beliefs. Even our identity or the relationship we have to our loved ones. Things can suddenly change if it was build on a lie and maybe we see how enchanged we have been and now we are free and can choose a new life
Guitarist Richie Blackmore was also the lead guitar in Deep Purple - and comes from my hometown of Weston-super-mare in Somerset, England - just saying, don't really know why!
I’m so glad you got goosebumps during the song. It was exactly the same reaction I had when I first heard this song over 30 years ago. It’s real music and only real music can engender a reaction like that.
We all agree that Dio had an amazing voice, but it also helped that he was teamed with two of the best guitarist of that era. Ritchie Blackmore and Toni Iommi . Both of which could lay down some really amazing riffs. When you get a Great vocalists, along with some really amazing guitarists - you get some truly epic music.
Vin&Sori, just let the people hate, I personally dont believe, but I go by the live and let live, so you guys keep doing what you do and keep with the amazing reviews and please check out Unleash the archers - Awakening. Thanks In advance
I've never seen ALLEGAEON on your reaction channel. Would you please be so kind to react to GRAY MATTER MECHANICS? They are very TALENTED and NEED some airplay. All the reaction channels are revisiting bands they already gave some airplay. There are so many interesting bands who never had the chance. This song 'Stargazer' is epic and I like your way of commenting. Patiently I wait:-)
Allegaeon is an amazing band. Grey Matter Mechanics is an instrumentally great song, but the lyrics are a little bland. I would recommend Proponent for Sentience III: The Extermination for more interesting lyrical content to react to.
@@metoothhanks7574 I think you're right. Imo it doesn't musically spoken matter which one you pick. Could be Biomech, could be All hail science and even a load more. Lyrically spoken you are wright. 👍
Yea The Extermination is the one I had been trying for. I've been requesting Wintersun lately cause of the upcoming concert, but Allegaeon is a must. They will love it.

RIP Ronnie James Dio RIP Cozy Powell RIP Jimmy Bain You guys should also check out the continuation song on the same album " A Light in the Black". Also you definitely need to hear Gates of Babylon and listen to the sick Guitar solo of Richie Blackmore. Speaking of Metal meeting Arabian nights, Blackmore loved Arabic scales as he said once: It's funny that there are many guitarists out there that would not dare to get near Arabic/Turkish scales.
Old Ghost would be great ! If you react to Ghost-Satan Prayer or Ghost-Monstrance Clock that would be awesome ! Cheer up from France ! I love you, thanks for reading my comment !

There was a movie called The Silver Chalice in 1954. In the movie a wizard convinces people to build a tower so he could prove he was greater than god by flying. He ultimately leaps off the tower to his death. The movie starred Jack Palance and Paul Newman. The first time I saw the movie I was like OMG, it's Stargazer!
I don't know how I missed you guys reacting to this song. It's 3 days short of 2 years since you posted this reaction and I'm surprised I didn't see this earlier. It's one of my most favourite songs ever, mainly because of RJD's vocals and I've heard a lot of great music over the 32 years I've listened to metal and rock. Uma das mais perfeitas canções já feita na história da humanidade!!!! Ronnie James Dio mostra todo seu poder!!!! É impressionante a qualidade musical apresentada nessa canção!!!! Tudo em sua forma mais perfeita!!!!! Mas o grande destaque, o que faz essa canção ser épica é o vocal de Dio!!!!!
Dio vive para sempre!!!!!! Imortal!!!!!!
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Eu não seguro a emoção!
Ozzy Ozborne Diary of a Madman
A song dealing with mental illness. Music beautifully composed by the late great Randy Rhoads.
I don't think anyone reacts to Ozzy songs because UA-cam will remove them by order of Sharon.

Gates of Babylon by Rainbow with DIO!
EPICA - Consign to Oblivion (Live at the Zenith)
EPICA, EPICA, EPICA... :D
The whole of this album Rising is set in a fantasy world so it was quite literally a wizard
Rainbow-Catch the 🌈 \m/
Yes! Totally different side from Dio that they should check out.
@@pedrohgbruno Hellyeah Brotha'! \m/

@@drewagoosa68 Yeah, react to the live version!!!
Blind Guardian - Another Holy War
sacred worlds is their best
This was a play off the Tower of Babel in the old testament.
FIIINALLLYYYYYY!!! VIN AND SORI HAVE COME BACK TO RAAIINNBOOWWW!!
i loved vin's reaction to the wizard plummeting to his death lol, rainbow with ritchie blackmore and dio was just too awesome, another good one of rainbow gates of babylon, suicidal tendencies you can't bring me down, rock on \m/

Dio: WONDERFUL/ETERNAL!
Back again Damn this is a heavy breakdown of a Rainbow song :)
I have some great memories of Rainbow. My dad and I used to play alot of Rainbow in his truck while sending me off to my religious classes.
This is the SONG! It's moving me every time... true epicness! you should react to "Gates of Babylon" from the Long Live Rock'n'Roll album, another legendary piece of work!
You know it's a good reaction/breakdown when I have to come back and watch it a second time \m/
One of the best songs of the universe!!
8:28 "No sound, as he falls, instead of rising"
Vin plays a roadrunner vs coyote clip in his head and starts laughing
Epica - The Essence of Silence
Blind Guardian - Sacred Worlds
Septicflesh - Enemy of Truth
Yes! Septicflesh!
Чпуньк Чпуньк VnS have only done like one Septicflesh song, will not be happy until they've done 3 or 4, although I wouldn't object to 10 :-p
10:17 Sori, my good lady.. when a singer can get you goosebumps by singiing "oh..oh..oh..oh.." you know you hear a good one.. if not..the best !!!!!!
Rainbow-Gates of Babylon!
The power in this song.... magic!
Options for a next Dio song: "The Last in Line". " All the Fools Sailed Away" and "Atom and Evil" (from Heaven and Hell)
We Rock is also a good suggestion.
When they managed to build a stone tower
, he jump from that tower to die. The song is sung by one of the people who have been enslaved
to build tower
a few quotes
"Too many die" "Where is your star? Is it far? Is it far? Is it far?" "Nine years worth of breaking my back"
Gates Of Babylon...best Dio lyrics ever...you will not be disappointed..."Sleep with the Devil and then you must pay."
Bolt Thrower - To the last...
Burzum - Gullaldr
Taake - Nordbundet offical video
As you noticed, this song told a story. However, that story is not yet complete. You need to listen to 'A Light In The Black' for the ending.
Kevin Bocarde thank for adding on 😁 I was just giving them the basis of it
Good interpretations you both, but I will add to this that it also shows the world as we believe it with the values and what is real.
Rip Dio
I’m so glad you got goosebumps during the song. It was exactly the same reaction I had when I first heard this song over 30 years ago. It’s real music and only real music can engender a reaction like that.
PARADISE LOST "Embers Fire"
"Christendom", "No Hope In Sight"
"The Longest Winter", "Gothic"
"Shattered", "Mortals Watch the Day", "As I Die"

@@khellendross3573 Nice. I've seen Wintersun live earlier this year. Very powerful. Thanks also for the support for Allegaeon. They deserve some airplay.
Finally, the best Dio song he ever sang, oh it's a Rainbow song, but it's Dio all the way. I love this song.
You guys need some Primus in your life.
RIP Ronnie James Dio
RIP Cozy Powell
RIP Jimmy Bain
You guys should also check out the continuation song on the same album " A Light in the Black".
Therion - Ginnungagap.
Therion - Wand Of Abaris.
That song is a masterpiece, simple as that. And also power metal song basicaly

YEESS! 🤘🏻Awesome such an epic song Dio truly was one of kind chills every time.... However please may ask you two to review more AMON AMARTH it has been far too now since your last reaction: Father of the Wolf, Death in Fire, One Thousand Burning Arrows, Blood Eagle, Thousand Years of Oppression, Under the Northern Star, Pursuit of Vikings, Raise Your Horns, are a great start. 😉 UP THE IRONS! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
I play this song every day at least once, this song is perfection, simple as that. Dio was just otherworldly.
My other comment was made before I saw candy corn. I can no longer watch videos by a "cornist"
Decapitated - Spheres Of Madness.
GOOSEBUMPSSSS, Now Light in the Black
React to Sodom. Any of these songs would be nice
- Nuclear Winter
- Agent Orange
- Christ Passion
Blasphemer!
I was glad to see you guys enjoying it as well and Sori getting goosebumps. Fantastic music, the likes of which will probably never be written again.
It's an Icarus like story, though not exactly.
IMO the greatest song ever written. Thanks, you two!
