This is in my top 5 albums, ever. I remember reading an interview with Ronnie James Dio about this song; its a group of slaves serving a wizard, who believes he can fly. They build him a tower, which he ascends, and when he jumps off, he falls to his death. The end of the song is about the slaves not knowing what do to, and having conflicted feelings about what to do next. I enjoyed watching you enjoy one of my favs! Ronnie James Dio, RIP.
And then they see a rainbow and their thinking clears and they realize they are free, and they go home. The following song A Light in the Dark continued the story. After going home they spent their lives regretting wasting their lives in search of somebody elses dream.
@@chuckhughes4899 All these years and I'm still not sure about the ending. "My eyes are bleeding ... take me home. I'm coming home" sounds more in line with follower suicide than just literally picking up and going home. The lyrics in the later songs sound like lost souls in purgatory than anything. With Dio's views on religion, how heaven and hell aren't separate realms but Earth itself and how both live in all of us; It seems very possible the lines could allude to souls living eternally in purgatory for following a false Messiah or God.

From Wikipedia: The song has been called a "morality tale",and its lyrics are written from the standpoint of a "slave in Egyptian times", according to lyricist Ronnie James Dio. They relate the story of the Wizard, an astronomer become "obsessed with the idea of flying", who enslaves a vast army of people to build him a tower from which he can take off and fly. The people hope for the day when their misery comes to an end, building the tower in harsh conditions ("In the heat and rain, with whips and chains; / to see him fly, so many died"). In the end, the wizard climbs to the top of the tower but, instead of flying, falls down and dies: "no sound as he falls instead of rising. / Time standing still, then there's blood on the sand". The next song, "A Light in the Black", continues the story of the people who have lost all purpose after the Wizard's death "until they see the Light in the Dark", according to Dio
This was amazing! One of my all time favorite songs by one of my all time favorite bands. If you liked this, please please PLEASE react to Uriah Heep-Wizard. Such an incredible song. I told him that it was such an honor to meet him and that after all of the years of him singing that he still delivered with such power in his voice. He told me (in classic Dio style) “Without me, you will carry on. Without you, I am nothing.” I am actually fighting back tears as I write this. Those words hit me like a truck. Little did I know at the time that just a few short months later he would be gone. But I do not cry because he is gone. I smile because he existed. Because he was a gentle loving soul. Dio is legendary here of course and this is one of my favorite Blackmore guitar solos. But this was a great band lineup all around including the late great Cozy Powell on drums.
Once in a lifetime album and lineup. Just like heaven and hell by black sabbath. Hats off.
This is the best rock&roll song ever because this is not only a song but it’s also a story. Ronnie James Dio tells a story in this song
"This man is a God of voice" - Elizabeth Zharoff, The Charismatic Voice
You got it right. I'm happy that you really enjoyed and appreciated it. For me this song is the greatest rock song ever. Often I hear it for high volume while im driving. That´s awesome or just having a good single rock party at home
Jamal...Dio's "Rainbow in the Dark" "Straight Through the Heart" "The Last in Line" and "Man on the Silver Mountain"
Thanks!
That "wizard" can be ANYbody in society that we hold up on a pedestal. A politician, a priest, a rock star or rapper, a celebrity or anybody that claims to have all the answers. Beware of anybody that want's to lead us to a "star" or "promised land" of any kind. The moral of the story? Don't "follow" anybody or hold people with extremely high regard. Nobody is holy. They will all fail and you will be let down eventually if you do this. Great video!!
Shut the fuck up,idiot
One of my favorite memories was of seeing Dio perform Stargazer live at Madison Square Garden. It was also the first time I'd ever heard this masterpiece of a song too, it made me a lifelong Rainbow fan. RIP Ronnie James Dio
Wait for it...
Wait for it...
Whispers "There's a part two."
A light in the black
Ronnie James Dio is my favorite singer of all-time. Epic voice.
Big thanks for that. Made my morning to see your reaction. I loved that song since i was 13 and im 52 now. Dio is one of those singers that is a great story teller. Try last in line be dio
I would love to see you react to Flight of Icarus by Iron Maiden
For me the guitar solo represents the Wizard as he rises then falls.. This is a 2 part story dude, now you've got to finish off with the 2nd part, A Light In The Black.. please..
Ronnie James Dio had one of the best musically voice ever. RIP my hero
One of my favorite albums. I may have "burned half of Columbia" listening to this in the early eighties.
You also can check out " kill the king" rainbow with Dio too, a master piece as well.
Do a live version.
Dio's voice is POWERFUL on that one 🤘😊
LOVE THAT LOOK!!! That Intro is KILLER!!! You can't believe driving in your 1978 Cougar on a Saturday night around town with Speaker that could blow up a building playing this!! WOW! We had this as Loud as we could.... Guitar Solo is Something HUH??? LOVE IT!!
Sadly, 3 of the 5 band members on this album left us much too soon. R.I.P. Cozy-1998, Ronnie-2010, & Jimmy-2016. ❤
1976 was one of the greatest years for music. SO MANY great albums released that year
Rainbow on Stage Live double album is a must hear! Man on the Silver Mountain is better live than studio version. Catch the Rainbow and Mistreated each take up one side of each record. Ritchie Blackmore's guitar is just as hot as when he did Deep Purples Made in Japan live double album. They don't make music like that anymore.
Rainbow/Dio!!!! The best voice in rock, never to be repeated.
I don't always remember the first time I've heard some of the songs you react to... but your joy and enthusiasm makes me happy because I know those feelings were there when I first heard them too! You're a great reminder of music I used to obsessively listen to at a young/foundational. Thanks for giving me rediscovery.
Please keep on posting videos. I love your channel.
Thank you and much love Jamel!
You'll definitely want to check out:

Ronnie James Dio and Cozy Powell, RIP. Thanks for all the great music.
Yes that's how they started it off lol....Cozy Powell is one of my favorite drummers!
Enjoyed this reaction so much Jamel. You really got it and your synopsis of the lyrics was absolutely spot on, one of rocks greatest anthems 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I suggest giving a listen their song, Light in the Black. It's the sequel to this one.
Just wonderful. I saw Ritchie play this with a different Rainbow lineup in 2018. Ronnie Romero on vocals, he did a fabulous job. I get chills every time I hear this. Every time.
