Eddie Hazel, not a household name but a legend among many guitarists and deep listeners, and lucky me who ran across this amazing recording back in the 70's.
Recorded in a single take while at least George was on LSD and told Eddie "...play it like your mother just died, imagine what the day would be like..." Eddie Hazel was a Hendrix disciple who did his own thing to spectacular effect. Truly underrated.
The only times I've heard Maggot Brain live, it was played by Mike Kidd Funkadelic Hampton. He kills it. But I really wish I could have heard the late great Eddie Hazel play it live. You should do a deep dive into Funkadelic, maybe Cosmic Slop next? And always more Prince!
I have read many comments , from all my research, I read George did tell him to play like he was just told his Mom had died...but part way thru told him now you find out it wasn't true...I guess few know the truth
"It's [an] indelible statement for the ages," says Vernon Reid, lead guitarist for Grammy-winning rockers Living Colour. "It's a piece of music to evoke the ghosts of the past. It evokes the suffering. It evokes the joy. It's a masterwork."

Being on LSD is in fact the best way to consume this song, or should I say, for allowing this song to consume you.
Funkadelic = 18 year old me and my friends blown away by this in the UK. Just beautiful

When he hits that impossible note at 7:09 or so it breaks your last line of defense..
