    I would have to say this is probably one of the most soulful guitar solo's ever recorded. Every single note and sound dripping with impact.

    Eddie Hazel, so brilliant. Definitely a disciple of Hendrix but did what true artists do and played authenticly from the heart. One of the most beautiful guitar recordings ever.

    I got turned on to this album on my way to bootcamp for the Navy, 1978. On the bus to go to the airport, I met a brother named, "Walker", … military, you know everybody by their last name. Anyway my brother, Walker, enlighten me. I loved the album so much that I bought it for my sister for Christmas that year. You younger generation folks discovering this gold mine of music, really yanks the memories out of the "cobwebs of my mind". Keep you minds open grasshopper... so many jewels out there.

    Eddie Hazel was a beast and a force of nature. If you like his guitar, check out Dean Ween's tribute (the band Ween) called "A Tear for Eddie". And if you like the studio version (Chocolate and Cheese is the album) then do check out some live performances, a couple are on youtube that are very eddie.

    This was pure emotion. George Clinton put his guitarist in a room, surrounded him with amps and speakers and told him to think of his grandmother dying and this was the result
    The great Eddie Hazel!

    great solo..Love Funkadelic...they say he was on acid when he recorded this one...george use to say every black man should listen to Zappa and sometimes they played a zappa tune early in the show..Where do you think they dreaw the ideas of creating band folk lore from like the comics and artwork...

    Incredible. This song is definitely not from the "easy listening" genre. Thanks for that back story Dan. The solo conveys all those feelings & emotion in a pure form. And for some reason I usually get a contact high whenever I listen to it. 😎

    George Clinton told Eddie Hazel before they recorded Eddie he should play like he heard that his mother died. Clinton removed the other tracks. Story says they were on LSD

  • @HisboiLRoi
    @HisboiLRoi Рік тому +2

    Although Dan covered most of what I was going to say, I will add that this was recorded in one take. During the mixing process, George Clinton ramped down the volume of most of the other musician's parts and added delay and echo effects. "Maggot Brain" is really acid-rock, with very little funk, and the mix further emphasizes that. As a whole, it sounds like little else in Funkadelic's catalog, although the acid-rock style guitar shows up in many songs.
    The balance of the album has a heavy funk-rock groove (though not as dance oriented as some of their later stuff). "Super Stupid" is psych-funk, while "Wars of Armageddon", the final cut (and almost as long as "Maggot Brain") is an all over the map freakout jam.
    In the mid 1970s, Funkadelic and alter-ego Parliament, who recorded separately, began touring together as Parliament-Funkadelic or P-Funk. In 1981, for myriad reasons, Clinton dissolved both bands, but continued on solo and as the P-Funk All-Stars. I saw them for the first time in 2009, shortly before Clinton quit drugs and cleaned up his personal and business lives. When I next saw them in 2015, George had the dress and haircut of a company CEO. His makeover didn't affect the music though.

    Eddie did this solo in one take for the album. He is 100% instrumental in adding the Hendrix style of play into the funk World of James Brown and Sly Stone. He is a guitar legend but I still feel he doesn't get the credit that he deserves on how impactful he was to music and a genre.

    apart from the narrative, which to me seemed pointless, I found this very soulful and chill, and with Dan's explanation at the end which I didn't know, gives it a bit more bite. I would argue about it being the best guitar solo ever though. It loses direction towards the end. You're hearing 2 guitars not just echoes. Though a different type of music, it's why I never liked Iommi's solo's as there were 2 different ones at once.
    Still, enjoyed this a lot
