In 1972 Parliament Funkadelic was touring Maggot Brain. I was at an outdoor show with the Funkadelic’s headliners. A dude came up to me sitting on a blanket waiting for the first band and said little buddy wanna roll some for us. He threw me a huge gallon size bag and said I’ll be back rollem up and pass them on. I rolled on a frisbee and passed them on. Through out the day George and Eddie would come around and and get what I had rolled and commend me on a fine job. When the PFunk came on I looked and it was George and Eddie, I had had no idea who they were before then. George opens by saying you probably know us by our fingers because we have been passing dope all day thanks to a little buddy that has been rolling all day. I couldn’t believe it. They were over the top. To this day I wonder if George remembers that day. I sure do.
You’ve already reacted to Ween’s “A Tear For Eddie.” Now you’re finally doing Maggot Brain. The circle is complete. Eddie Hazel, Kidd Funkadelic, and Dean Ween are all guys that don’t get there props from the guitar community.
@@OmateYayami Hendrix and Page .... Lol there is a huge difference between those 2 first off Jimmy Page isn't that great of a guitarist.. he's a decent thief who was at the right place at the right time... Jimi blows him away in almost every aspect.. definitely sound way different tonally too.. SRV is a reincarnated Jimi who practiced alot more.. maybe check him out
The one guitar solo that inspired me like no other. I spent days playing over that chord progression. That one bended note, that somehow tries to reach the e but never really gets there (at least that's how it feels to me), is probably the note that I played more than any other in my life.
Michael I have become obsessed with your video's. I love your passion for the P! I have seen them about 50 times over the years including one memorable gig in Fort Lauderdale in the 90's when they took everyone to church for 4 hours of relentless uncut funk! I have also seen them when they are sloppy as hell but there are always moments of genuis. Thank you for turning the world on to Pfunk my bro!
Saw p funk at a festival in florida mid 2000s as they played this song the fog started moving in in a natural amphitheater surrounded by large oak trees….amazing experience
As a little country kid in rural oregon george opened my eyes to the rest of the world, and this song spent many nights with me. An amazing group of musicians whose influence and importance cannot be undetstated
Other amazing guitar works/solos by Eddie Hazel imo: California Dreaming, Physical Love, Smedley Smorganoff, I'll Stay, Red Hot Mama, What About It, Cosmic Slop, Standing on the Verge. The long outro solo on standing on the verge is probably one of the best video to watch Eddie playing without interruption. Great performance but the video quality isn't great. /watch?v=LoULS9zBRYE
Hey Michael you make my day sometimes. Late to this video but thanks for being a jolly guy and making videos on these songs I love. It makes a difference you wouldn’t believe.
Eddie Hazel Was So Emotional While Playing,That He Would Literally Have Tears Rolling From His Eyes While Playing Songs. George Use To Tease Him About It!!!
There are three guitar players on stage which was normal for PFunk. The mix wasn’t shit, it’s not a board mix so whoever videotaped, was in front of Mike’s amp and Eddie’s was on the other side of the stage. Onstage, Eddie and Mike can obviously hear each other. Rodney “Skeet” Curtis and Dennis Chambers were a team. The intro is a D bending up to E but the E is hit on the E string, 12th fret. I spoke to Eddie’s mom before she passed away and Eddie sat down with me one day when we were at a show in Springfield, Massachusetts.
If you have the Houston concert DVD they had the same issue with Gary Shider's lead guitar on Cosmic slop that they fixed 90% through his solo. His thoughts on it are amusing despite missing what seems like an awesome solo.
How serendipitous that I recently got stuck on this song, and now you're reacting to it. Not that I haven't heard it before. It was featured in a House M.D. episode years ago for one, and now as I'm typing this I'm hearing that you've obviously heard this one before, still worth your reaction; the song is that S tier, you could have heard it a million times. Love your channel, when you did Kendrick Lamar, you double sealed the deal on my admiration and respect for your seriously cultured ear. Your reaction awesomeness ensues.
Your a local I grew up in south of DC but lives in Southern MD by PRS. Great music area Roy Clark, Roy Buchanon, Gatton, Link Wrey, Seldom Scene, Ellington, Billy Holiday, Bruce Hornsby. I got turned onto Maggot Btain and Doctor Funkenstein on 102.3 WHFS in 6th grade. So cool the rqnge of ypur listening habits. I hear the influence of Clark, Reed, and Campbell in your phrases as you doodle around making your videos. ❤ I AM YOUR NEWEST SUPPORTERS. I am friends with Damian Isley, Ron's son, and he refers ro George asb Uncle Georgie
I saw Parliament Funkadelic a long time ago when my friends band opened up for them. I got to go back stage. It was like going back in time. Ridiculously fun. They still call everyone "blood". What's up blood? 😂😎
this is soo random but I was at the lyric when they played and it was great my uncle plays in the band so i got to go back stage and it was one of the best experiences ever George Hampton gave me one of his guitar picks and I carry it with me everywhere I go
Eddie Hazel is the secret guitar god who unfortunately never gets his true due ( along with all The PF masters and music) The P and the constituent members have and continue to influence huge portion of music, pop culture and live concert presentation_across multiple musical periods and genres and are still a driving force in pop music today ( uptown funk anyone?). The P Funk DNA is in everything and most people even music heads don't even know from hip hop to dance music girl POP and good old blazing rock and roll all have been touched by the power of the P. EH, Micheal Hampton, Blackbird, Glen Goins, Catfish Collins - Gary Sheider alone are mindblowing rythym players. Find the clip of Red Hot Mama live with Micheal Hampton, Eddie ( in the background) Gary sheider and Billy Bass Nelson grinding and grooving with the amazing drummer Tyrone Lampson pure funk face melt. MP said it PFUNK is the real shit!
Bootsy Was my favorite from way back. Not sure how he did it but damn. I would have like to have seen a jam session with him and Neal Schon and of course Steve Smith
Great reaction Michael but don't fanboy out too hard on the amazing and iconic Dennis Chambers. All the PFunk drummers were exceptional. Tiki Fulwood and Jerome Brailey (among others) left thier signature footprints and musical DNA all over the PFunk catalogue. Dennis is over-the-top good but I always liked watching Jerome play live back in the 70's. Of course, been following P-Funk around for the last five decades and have seen and hung out with them countless times over the years. George is 82 and still keeping it moving. Remember...Free your mind and your ass will follow. 🤩🤘🏾
J. Mascis does a killer version of this alongside Mike Watt (bass player from the Minutemen) and Bernie Worrell. It doesn't compare to the original, but it's still pretty awesome.
I have one for you to break down for us and explain what he is doing in 2013 at Crossroads Eric Clapton did a super performance of Got to get better in a little while. Now I am 67 and have heard lot a lot of music and it's one of Clapton's best performances of this song check it out. About this , yes I put him on the list with David Gilmore of guitarist that play with passion makes you feel the music.
yo you gotta give d'angelo some since you reacting to funky stuffs. the whole voodoo tour was the closest and last thing to those of prince, james brown and parliament/funkadelic

Cool. I got an double album from 1977. Parliament live. P-funk earth tour. I bought it back then.
Amazing story, thanks for sharing man
Grove from the deep George Clinton
Insane story. Helleva antidote! Cheers
I feel like I've heard this story from multiple people.

Eddie Hazel is such an underrated guitarist R.I.P
Yea I personally can't decide between Eddie Hazel and Rory Gallagher. They're like barely known Hendrix and Page to me.
@@OmateYayami Thanks for putting me on to a new guitarist, I was not familar with Rory Gallagher until now, I really dig him.

Shawn Lane is another underrated one if anyones interested. Two of my favourite
Most great guitar players are
George was like Frank Zappa.....brought out the best in his crew! TY!

Just heard this one for the first time in my life a week or so again. I can't stop listening to it. Absolutely mesmerizing.
So incredible just freaking mind blowing this song blazing 🔥 hot
Little-Known Fact: There was no smoke machine at this concert.
No need : people in the audience did the f job ;-)
@Ebriel0000000 Fire was literally coming out of Eddie's fingertips.

Greatest guitar solo of all times!! Ever!

Great breakdown of 1 of the greatest guitar songs ever.
Bravo MP

Eddie doesn't get his due from the world outside of guitar players. He is unreal. Glad to see him on here finally. (sorry if I missed him)
The drum be jamming the foot drum and drum wow

God bless eddie hazel the OG guitar on this.
Nothin better than Maggot brain to end a winter funk❤
Love your commentary & passion. I’ll be seeing George & Parliament for the millionth time in August.
Me too
Wow thank you for this one. Such an underrated record.
Rodney "Skeet" Curtis on the bass guitar. SUPER funky dude!
I have to see these guys! This was bananas!
Biological Speculation: Analyzing this song without Eddie playing does not do it justice.
Seriously….it’s just not the same. Kidd does a decent job, but he’s not Eddie

Eddie Hazel could flat play!
I now must go on a PFunk deep dive. Thanks,MP!
