It’s said Eddie hazel asked George Clinton how he wanted the song to be played. His response was play like your mama just died.

Clinton said "play as if your mother died in the first part then play the second part as if you discover she didn't", which explains the evolution in the song.

The guitarist is Eddie Hazel, check out his first solo album after leaving Funkadelic. He did an amazing cover of California Dreaming.

Eddie Hazel just destroys it this song. Certainly one of the greatest guitarists ever and he definitely doesn’t get talked about enough for sure. A true legend. Great song and comments Chod.

Picture this… you and your friends are out on a Saturday night in NE Ohio, feeling no pain. You are listening to the radio, enjoying the company, the clock strikes midnight, and Maggot Brain comes on. This was the Scene EVERY SATURDAY in the Cleveland /Akron area. Good friends, good music, good times, good memories. A perfect way to cap off a perfect evening…

This was Eddie Hazel’s eulogy for Jimmi Hendrix. Absolute raw emotion. So powerful and beautifully moving.

The version from the album One Nation Under A Groove, live and with Michael Hampton is my go-to Funkadelic song.

Michael Hampton was also playing in the Dean Ween Band ( 2016 ) on tour still ripping it up.

Eddie Hazel kicks so much butt on Maggot Brain. RIP. He was later replaced by Michael Hampton who also does a great version of Maggot Brain. You should check out Cosmic Slop by Parliament Funkadelic Live Houston 1976. Phenomenal guitar by Hampton and great vocals by the late Clarence Fuzzy Haskins and Garry Shider aka The Diaper Man

Prince was a constant listener of: Funkadelic.
'Classic, 70s Funka- and Shuggie Otis' Inspiration Information, by FAR (I would argue): 2 of Prince's MOST IMPORTANT (and VOLUMINOUS), MUSICAL influences (and inspirations).
    🤘🤘🔥
    No doubt, whatsoever.

WMMS Cleveland always played Maggot Brain after midnight on weekends. Reminder to settle down and relax. Carlos Santana loved Eddie Hazel’s playing on this one…

So glad you are finally doing this. I also think you mean Alice Cooper and not Alice in Chains.

Very good song ...but, to me, it always sounds like B.B. King dropped some acid before a recording session.

That emotional ride was also enhanced by George Clinton panning and volume shifts on the board in the studio.

Great reaction. They were a great band and in a short time they released some great music. The album America Eats It’s Young ( 1972 ) is their masterpiece. The whole album just encompasses everything that Funkadelic was.

George asked Eddie to play something expressing grief that his mom had died which. Is first part of song and then told that his mom was alive. A tab of acid was supposed to have been. Taken by Eddie song was recorded and two days lateŕ Eddie heard song and didn't know it was him playing great emotions...
