What US ATACMS could bring to Ukraine's counter-offensive

- Ukrainian forces look set to receive from the United States the long-range MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to help their ongoing counter-offensive against Russia.
The ATACMS, which has been seen combat use with the US Army since 1991, is a surface-to-surface artillery piece that can hit targets way beyond the range of other existing missiles and rocket systems.
Used in combat during Operation Desert Storm and later in the Iraq War, the ATACMS can strike targets up to 300km away.

The difference is that the ATACMS cluster goes much further, to 165 km.

To keep it factual: similar concerns of the risks of persistent duds. When a missile costs $1M or so, I don't worry that there will be huge numbers of places where one has to look for UXO from these missiles.
Former HIMARS crewmember here, the unclassified range of the ATACMS is 300 KM. It is very accurate and effective from a long distance.

It seized more terrain than Russia has done in 8 months, but ... yeah, I suppose we all wanted it to end the war outright.
2 airfields destroyed with 1 in area of counter offensive using just 5 missiles in 1 day. After that uaf launched 6 more. Some of ka52 helicopters and vihr atgm storage were destroyed. So now for russian occupational forces it will be harder to attack uaf on ground, including suppressing ifvs, apcs, tanks. Add here 30 abrams tanks, that just arrived to Ukraine and soon will enter battle, more artillery and sams to come. Along with tens of thousands of people, that will enter battle in few weeks or months

I suppose its another useful tool in the box but in the quantities that are being hinted at, not a war winner.
I'm afraid this war is only going to end when enough Russian cannon fodder has been disposed of on the ground by Ukrainian soldiers going up close and personal with them.

The US has close to 400 cluster ATACMS it is not using and is phasing the missile out entirely soon. Ukraine will be getting enough of these to make a real difference. Any Russian high value target like a main supply hub will now have to be sited at 200 miles from the front or risk being taken out by just one of these.

It will help a great deal. Russian forces already struggle to get enough ammo and supplies to keep them in battle. Now Russia will be forced to move all its main supply bases 200 miles from the front making it a total nightmare to get supplies to the front.
It's going to be a really bad day for any Russian facility that is suddenly inundated by a rain of 300 M74 bomblets, each putting out hundreds of pieces of high velocity tungsten.
