- Ukraine’s military has liberated less than 0.37% of the territory that Russia occupied in June, despite breaches of Russian defenses near Robotyne. The counteroffensive up to this point has been disappointing for Kyiv and the West.
Retired Brigadier Gen. Mark Kimmitt and WSJ Ukraine correspondent James Marson explain Ukraine’s evolving counteroffensive military strategy and what could be next for Europe’s biggest land war since World War II.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict
WSJ’s latest news coverage around the 2022-2023 Russia-Ukraine conflict.
#Russia #Ukraine #WSJ
This is the first news I've hear on Ukraine in five days.
Shows how powerful western media is. They have the means to make the whole world forget about this pointless war we have heard about non stop for the past 2 years. It’s a sign Zelenskyy sugar daddy, America is got its sight on a different war and the Ukraine war is starting bore Uncle Sam, the media, and majority of the population. Israel is a lot more exciting and personal for the Biden cabinet, to say the least.
That was one of the reasons why Russia and Iran organized facilitated trained and directed Hamas to invade Israel - to distract attention from Ukraine and make narratives that Ukraine doesn't matter, so to at least redirect help from Ukraine. USA can supply both multiplied 15 times more than it does now.
All quiet about Ukraine in Western Lying Media!
That plays into Russia's hands.

it needs to be admitted that western politicians committed error in this military campaign by hesitating giving arms and jets to Ukraine. Various experts complaining of slow conuter-attack is shameful.
edit* It needs to be admitted that western politicians committed and error in this military campaign by funding a proxy war that has sent 250K+ Ukrainian men to slaughter to "weaken Russian"
What Counterattack lol It never happened
they got more land back than the Russian did in bahkmut...@@JohnCSmith-lp1qr
Same thing by never adding the ATACMS missiles this summer. The planes I get, but the idea that we didn't trust the Ukranians to misuse them seems like a big mistake.
Виноваты все😂
This general probably forgot how the US was attacking dual-use (aka civilian) targets in Serbia (among other places). Hypocrisy at its finest. And these guys have the gall to “call out” Russian propaganda… Fascinating.
They're f*cked, stalemate means Russia has time to increase ammo production and take the rest of Ukraine, while the US is super angry that Ukraine hasn't won already and is done sending aid😂 Ukraine should negotiate while it still has some bullets left.
Can Mark tell us how should huge advancement be built without air superiority? Or without possibility to move theater of war onto enemy territory. It would be interesting to listen.
Сдаться😂
@@user-il6by6ft7q А твой дед бы сдался фашистам? Вот и украинцы не сдадутсяю
You mean the air superiority that's impossible for Ukraine to achieve that no matter what supplies they get?
@@teddykayy Why impossible? Russia has some next gen alien jets or something?
@@DonaldBiden420 Ukraine cannot get trained up fast enough combined with NATO not having enough air systems they'd willingly transfer to Ukraine. The best Ukraine could do is contest for advantage in the air which is what they're already doing.
The Ukrainians have done an incredible job with what they’ve been given.
Lol. It's over. Ukraine and NATO lost. Crimea will remain Russia
I don’t think so. Almost 300,000 Russians killed and counting. Russia will eventually give up because it’s just too costly in money and lives. They gave up in Afghanistan and they’ll eventually give up in Ukraine.
@@jcmc9378😂
The Russian casualties, at and behind the front lines are wearing down the Russian will to participate in this stupid attempt.
What is most impressive is the fact that Putin's 3-day war turned into a Ukrainian counterattack. Who would have thought that the Ukrainians would not only be able to withstand the Russian force, but also try to launch a counteroffensive.
The term "stalemate" is nowhere near applicable.
Causally ignores that Ukraine has also launched attacks on civilian targets in Russia.
Is this a TOP US military officer, he speak like Mr. Rodgers?!?!?!? 😂😂😂 What happened with the greatest generation of US army generals like Patton or MacArthur?
Ukraine is NOT a NATO member as of now. Our Military Industrial Complex is the only reason we entered this war and that’s the reason our inflation rate is so high.
Who fault was it for not sending aid in sufficient quantity to prevent Russia from building up fortifications over the winter?
Zelenskyy, by stubbornly sending almost all of the troops to the Bakhmut meat-grinder, while the rest of the frontline was focused on building fortifications and Surovikin line. Even Prighozin himself RIP, stated that the main objective wasn’t to capture the city, but by grinding Ukraine army and distracting them from all other fronts.
Все виноваты вокруг. Нещасная ухраина

Nah. The corruption within the Ukraine Army allowed the Russians to push so deep in Southern Ukraine.
Cool video format with the physical Map and longer form.
thanks to wall street journal because Ukraine soldier's able to see the first defense line of Russia through your video on UA-cam only.
What kind of dead end is he talking about? the Russians waited until the air ran out and actively moved towards Kupyansk and Avdeevka
Honest review
Small mistake in this: your presenter said the Ukrainians used a Truck Bomb to target the Russian bridge to Crimea - that was a unsubstantiated Russian claim, and videos show the first attack was a drone boat.
Ukraine has a long history of using terrorist methods
never listen to the U.S best propagandis NATO already lost their counteroffensive , russia is not the enemy here✌️
storm shadow missiles have the range to hit the bridge
Everyone would call it "cutting the land bridge."
wow what revolutionary insight. this is the first time that I've heard this insight. its not like anyone has been saying exactly this since june.... quick note maybe talk to a guy who has tried to sound out the key town names at least one time before shooting the video...

Imo the battle map format just doesn't work. Takes way too long to get to the point.
Try new stuff for the winter try organized flanks only officer's only officer's flanks needed try for winter or end of fall
Supplying limitless ammo to Ukraine while they made negligible progress, such a waste of taxpayers' money.
The problem is that it's not limitless
here's what's sick. 20 members of Congress personally invest in top weapons contractors that'll profit from the just-passed $40 billion Ukraine aid package
Russia is not fighting civilians. Ofc there are victims, but often this is ua mistakes with wrong anti air launches and ru bad intelligence. For example, the recent blow to the market from the territory of Ukraine. If civilian victims were Russia's target, there would be many more victims. There are enough missiles.
Wake up.
You life in your own mind !

This has a very good AI voice, but supply route is pronounced 'supply root' not 'supply rowt'.
Without air support nothing done
this is still happening everyone focused on israel now
there will be no stalemate.
Ahaha, disappointing he says. Can you do better with given inputs? Ukraine is always welcome coach-experts to demonstrate right approaches. WJS video as always "disappointing" ...
Greetings from Ivan! Europeans love democracy (power of the people), so they must recognize the democratic choice of the residents of Donbass. 😎
So stupid conclusion..fear to say truth....

Guy gets the words Sochi and sake confused.
The west decided last year that Ukrainians should not succed.
We did have delivered to little and to slow.

Somebody tell that old man that Ukraine doesn't have navy nor air superiority and is conducting its operations with bare minimum
This retired general supports Ukraine. If you support Ukraine, then don't attack your ally. Attack the enemy.

A few men with shovels beat back NATO
This so called "General" is a joke. Deployed in Kosovo? In that conflict all they done is providing weapons and logistics to Albanian rebels while dropping bombs on Serbian positions from the air (losing three airplanes crashed with old soviet systems) where for three months of campaign they hit more then 70% of civilian infrastructure missing their targets even in multiple cases hitting directly Albanian rebels by "mistake". If Milošević was not so stupid to accept UN resolution and instead of this continued the war US would be totally ashamed for their fail air involvement since most of the NATO members were already planning to revoke their support for that mission.
What about all the many irreplaceble soldiers they lost during this verry fruitless counteroffensive? Why is the west pushing an exhausted and depleted ukraine into a counteroffensive? Is it to see them lose faster? Beceause now they need to hold that territory. And with all the losses they sustained that is going to be a verry daunting task. This might also be the cataclyst that breaks them. Causing ukraine to lose even more territory.
Zelenskyy promise a counteroffensive, he delivered the counteroffensive. Simple as that.
@@vuvuvu6291 ah yes... what a wonderfull counteroffensive. If i promise you 5 million dollars and end up giving you 5 million dollars monopoly money from a board game i technically did too
Ukraine should resign to the fact that it has done all it could to win back the lost territory. Iam saying this based one the following:
(1). It is a stalemate, despite the constant denial to the reality by the west and Zelensky.
(2). The attacks on Crimea are but annoyance to the Russians. The west and Ukraine can do songs and dance about them, but they are like the olives scattered on a large pizza, few and far between.
(3). Americans and American are growing wearied of this war because they wanted success on the table to justify their investment in Ukraine. The anticipated returns on their investment is in terms of geopolitical superiority over Russia, and they are not getting it, at least not in 2023, and I dare say not for a very long time judging by the way the war progresses.
(4). This is a large spanner in the works...Gaza war. America's attention and money is now being drawn to a different region. Israel is more important to the US because of the many reasons why America is so supportive of Israel...Jewish elements in the US political upper echelon.
In summary, no amount of video blogs by Zelensky will make America open up its wallet any wider.
I was also told F-16s, Leopards and HIMARS will change the course of the war.. I don't see why ACTAMs will be any different. This is beginning to sound a lot like a certain axis country in ww2 talking about its wunderwaffe.
HIMARS absolutely changed the course of the war, remember the last counteroffensive? Leopards might have made a difference if supplied in the right quantity and earlier before Russia built up its fortifications. F16s haven't been delivered yet, but if there's enough of them they will absolutely make a giant difference. ATACMs may not immediately make a difference but will have lasting effects on Russian logistics and aviation
@@CamiloLeonardoGarciaF-16 will make no difference as they're easy to detect on radar, easy to get a lock on and easy to shoot down. F-35 would probably make a difference, but they're not getting those. So in other words; no air superiority.
@@AgentSmith911 they will not get air superiority, but even with their old and tiny fleet of su27 and su24s that are just as easy to detect and even easier to shoot down, they are contesting the sky. F16s are a big deal not because they will enable air superiority, but because they allow a wide range of NATO weaponry to be used that Ukraine doesn't have access to now. In addition to that, the F16 is a great SEAD platform
@@CamiloLeonardoGarcia It also depends on what version of F-16s they're getting. But I doubt it's gonna make any difference on the battlefield because the Russian SAM systems have a long range and have their troops covered.
@@AgentSmith911 that's fair, it probably won't allow them to do strikes close to the front, but it could offer new ways of degrading Russian supply lines and step up their interdiction campaign against the BSF with stand-off weapons. Ultimately this war will be decided by logistics
It makes you wonder if the Russian navy isn't completely obsolete in the age of naval drones.
What about our aircraft carriers send hundred drones able to stop everyone
From where did you this clown general? "Here Russia is attacking military targets, and here civillian targets" 😂
Allies ,why discuss new technics .
👍
Winter is coming? What then?
I hope the West doesn't run out of ammo before production lines can be expanded. Russia has plenty of shells, and artillery is the king of this battlefield.
Right or wrong, the West invited Ukraine into its sphere and is now morally obligated to supply it.
USA: ATACMS missiles will make a tremendous difference in favor of Ukraine. That's exactly the reason why we wanted to wait more than 600 days into the war before we send them.
The Marines
No more US money to Ukraine.
SO, just where are the ATACAMS? Why does Ukraine not have long range weapons nor aircraft support????
Now that I've seen the range of the ATTACMS on the map, I can't see why the West would not supply Ukraine with them.
Just like WWI you cannot measure progress or the lack of it by small territorial changes. It is how demoralised and purposeful those who fight feel and how well their economy is able to fund the struggle.. Ukraine has 40+ nations backing it, their economy although hit by oil prices continues on in a stable manner.. In contrast look at the value of the Rubel in dollars over the past 12 months, that tells a wholly different story.
And yet there's no end in sight. I'm tired of all this it will take time, look at WW2. Like why wasn't this made clear in the beginning when Western leaders convinced us to support their plan? Why were Western leaders cheering when sanctions were first applied saying the Russian economy would contract by 30 percent in a few months? When I hear "Well this was always going to take time", I hear blame being placed on the public, like we are responsible, if we don't give our support for many years to come. It's been almost 2 years, how long will "Russia having lost" be before the war comes to an end? Western leaders need to just be honest what it's going to take, how long its going to take and then trust the public to support them. After all, that's the basis of democracy.
The whole world is suffering for it feels like the Continental system implemented by Napoleon I
@@jmhorangelogistically what on earth does putting expect. Most of Ukraine will never accept occupation for a long time, and russia will never give up anything they've destroyed and taken

It's not bleeding. It's hemorrhaging. Lives.
In short the counteroffensive has failed ; now we are noticing Russia new offensive a defender can afford to attack
If they had helicopters could they leapfrog the defensive lines?
No. They can't fly- Russia will shoot them down. And even if they managed to get enough men in, they would be unable to resupply them. Look what happened to the Russian VDV at Hostomel in the early days.
1) No, Russian have air defense
2) they have helicopters, but old and not much
3) they also have air forces, they have su25 and mig29 planes, but not much
Who ever fights to the last man wins this war
Question
How many ukraine soldiers and personel will be required to launch invasion of crimea. These pot shots at crimea will not make Russia surrender. Russia will field 750000 soldiers. These westerners think Russia is incompitent cannot fight coward. But reality is different. Russia still occupies 120000 sq kms of ukraine territory apart from Cremia
it is a break not stalemate because now wsj showing action in israel
we should send aid before Ukraine needs it not after. More equipment, more fighter jets, more leopards/abrams, more bradleys, more air defense, more advanced artillery, ATACMS, more drones and anti drone equipment
I feel like many of these pundits who mention negotiation options for Ukraine, based on their 'expert' knowledge of friendly and enemy forces dispositions, internal political considerations etc. would also likely be the ones who would have told Stalin to try to negotiate in winter of 1941.
