I’m an old fart that’s been fishing my whole life and I really enjoyed this video. You broke it down really well and spoke some truths (like presentation over fly selection) that don’t get talked about as much as they should. If anybody out there is wondering if they can do it, you proved that they can. Find a little piece of water that you can get familiar with, get the bare minimum of gear that you need, and work on approaching the water and presenting the fly. The fish will eventually take care of the rest. (ps - Please exclude me from the giveaway - I’m set!)
John, I've been watching your videos for about 10 months now. I'm still fairly new to this incredible sport (and art). I learn so much from your videos and appreciate your love and passion for fly fishing. It's contagious. Thanks for your enthusiasm and willingness to share your knowledge!
I think the mysticism comes from the snobs and royalty from England. In the day it was the sport of kings ! But, places like ORVIS and others similar don't help. I've used the finest equipment money can buy. When you're standing in a stream with $300 Simms waders, $200 Simms vest, $130 wader boots, $75 net, $325 Able Trout1 and an $800 Sage rod , $80 Tilley hat and $170 Costa Del Mar shades at first it felt like a million bucks ! Eventually I became embarrassed and didn't want to be that fisherman any longer ! I remember once standing in a stream under the covered bridge on the Mohican in Ohio. Some guy walking up the bank stopped and asked, you're not from around here, are you ! After that I came back down to earth. I build my own rods, tie my flies and leaders. But you are 100% correct ! Anyone can do it on a budget ! And ORVIS is way overrated ! Most of their flies are tied in Pakistan or Vietnam !
I do recommend the Gary Borger books. Especially reading the water, the ecology and general topics of how rivers flow and where fish stage to feed by size, helped me tremendously !
About three years ago I made a good friend who was obsessed with fly-fishing. He was from Montana where there are tons of lakes all within a very close distance of his house. I wanted to find a nice video to start to learn how to and this was the first one I came across. Thanks for making it.
My dad always fished with his fly pole and he passed away 5 years ago. I regret that I never had him teach me the art. One of those regrets that will last my life time. Watching your videos brings back days fishing with him. I saw him catch a native Brookie in a lil spring fed run that wasn't 2 foot across at it's widest and no more than 12" at it's deepest spot. I love to have that fly rod today.
I've been loving your videos, I'm always blown away by the quality despite being a relatively small channel. Keep up the great work. I don't have much in the way of good fly fishing where I live but I've been planning a trip to some trout water this spring with some friends who have never fly fished. I'm sufficiently equipped with my own fly fishing gear but I'm trying to come up with some more for my friends so they can have a great first experience and hopefully continue fly fishing. This setup would really help us out so I figured I'd throw my hat in the ring. Either way I'm looking forward to your next adventure!
You make fly fishing look SO easy! Lol I watched these UA-cam guys showing all these fancy casts I went and stayed hung up in the tree's! Lol you have your own casting style and it works, I gave up and went back to tenkara fishing, I still want you to try it! You can get a perfect drift by keeping the line out of the water!
Excellent work showing everyone how really simple fishing the fly is! Your "b" roll really shows the beauty and serenity of the places that fishing takes us. Keep it up. Really enjoy the channel!
Your absolutely right, enjoy the outdoors. Catching fish is a bonus. Just started my spring season yesterday. Very nice outing. I've been flyfishing for 38 years, I don't need the outfit Your giving away, so give it to a new flyfisherman, and thanks so much for your generosity. Enjoyed the video. 👍
I really appreciate the the positive view of fly fishing and specifically the emphasis on the visual beauty of the species caught and the details on the Brook Trout is spectacular, please keep it👍
Thank you for the fly fishing introduction! I've signed up for a tie flying class just to get into this sport. Now I have to head over to the Walmart challenge.
Great video love how you broke down everything very easy to follow and understand. I was introduced to fly fishing by my father in the Everglades a few years ago and I love it.
I really enjoy your videos!! The main reason I continue to watch you is not your love for fishing as much as it’s your passion about the fish themselves, from your rubber net to informing people on how to handle these fish. I’ve seen so many brutal things when out fishing and the main issue, I think, is ignorance. When and if a person is able to take out a young sportsman, you should take it upon yourself to teach them properly from the beginning! Like you said, it’s not all about catching the fish, it’s about being out in the wild country. The catching of a fish is the proverbial cherry on top!! Get out there and enjoy!!!
You caught fish with your reasonably priced Amazon set up! Point made. Personally, I purchase and use Redington gear which is of high quality for the money. Thanks for this and your other videos.
Well done! You’re doing an excellent job not only introducing new anglers to fly fishing, but also providing them with valuable pointers on casting and fish handling. Keep up the great work!
The first good fly line I purchased as a new fly fisherman blew my mind how a good line could make such a huge positive difference in my fishing. I think any of the cheaper combos are more than fine but they really lack decent line. I’d rather fish a $70 combo with a $100 fly line than a sage esn with a $20 line. Great video and content!!! Thanks.
I got into fly fishing on an 45$ Martin kit, a cheap heavy crappy rod with garbage line and a trash reel but it helped me get the basics, even just casting in my driveway was addicting. Since then I went fishing once this past summer and caught no fish on the fly but plenty with the spinning reel, today I am going to a local stocked pond with my 9’ 5wt Clearwater and a box of self toed flies.
Great video. And great job explaining and showing that you don’t have to be rich to get started in fly fishing. Seems like a great starter kit to get involved in the sport.
Just started watching your videos not too long ago because I was interested in starting to fly fish. This video helped me learn some ver valuable things and gets me excited to get my own rod to start.
Wow Hardman! That was a great video and you are an incredible teacher. What you said at the end is so true. Just to be out in the beauty of it all is great fish or no fish.
I'm starting a program in my area to teach fly fishing to visitors of our area. I'm loving your videos to help understand and communicate fly fishing better. Thank you for the quality content!
Thanks for the vid. I really enjoy your vids since I'm new to the sport. I just got a Amazon rod and reel for Father's Day so it's encouraging to see you don't have to throw down a ton of money to get fishing. I've been up to one of our epic AZ creeks but it was muddy after a summer rain so was a raging torrent. Didn't really know what I was doing and no luck but like you said, just beautiful being there.
yes, new to fly fishing about 5 yrs. started with a 13 ft. Tenkara. Have a 9 1/2 ft. 5wt. Need some thing smaller for the small streams. Love the video!!
It’s fun watching you work the creek. I’ve been watching a bunch of your stuff learning. I caught my first brookie in the fly last summer and this year I’ve decided I’m leaving all my spinning gear at home and only fly fishing.
Great video thank you. All my rods/reels are from Amazon. Some fly lines and all terminal tackle except flies. You are correct! You don’t have to spend a lot of money.
You guys are awesome, love your adventures....I have never fly fished before but will be trying soon, I watch your videos everyday at lunch....thanks....👍
I like how you explain how and why to use and do what you do. Yes I'm new to fly fishing. I've rolled 1 and I'm hooked. Like you said it's an addiction. Yep I'm hooked !! Thank you!!
You got me hooked on fly fishing about 2 months age. Even though we don’t have trout, I have busted some bream and bass. I hike often and my fly gear is with my backpack. Great video. Keep it up I really enjoy watching.
I'd honestly argue spin fishing can cost more than fly fishing long term. Costs me $10 for a single Rapala that I'll more than likely lose at least 3 if I'm fishing them correctly in any given day. Great content man, perfect way of showing how to keep it simple and cheap, while showing them how.
Two questions: 1. Are you particular to one type of floatant over another, What is your favorite? 2. What is your “big camera” brand and model? All of your videos are really high quality and I appreciate that!
Sweet video as always! I've always wanted to get out there and fly fish, but nervous about the cost of supplies. Thanks for alleviating some of the financial burden!
Don't need the rod set up but nice lesson with a cheaper set up!. When I first got into fly fishing, I went 19 times before I landed my 1st trout!! Been hooked ever since! I had my best year last year so looking forward to the upcoming season! Oh, and yes. It's all about the solitude, nature, surroundings, wildlife and peace with your soul! Well Done!

I start with Netangler fishing rod set and it works great too😄

Just getting into fly fishing here in Canada, wish you were closer to give me pointers. love the videos

These videos are incredible I think I might start fly fishing cause of your videos, I'm goin to visit Montana so I could use a fly rod.

Don’t understand why u felt to share that 💀
@@robertlambert1529bro, u don’t need to say that
Another awesome video, you need to get Andrew out of Florida and back on the creek with you! Thanks so much for the chance to win!
Must agree with you on just being out and enjoying mother nature is a big part of fishing and getting better at the sport.
I love watching your vids
I’ve learned a lot from these vids
Me and my son love your videos. Nothing more beautiful than wild trout. Great work, can't wait to see more!

You’re the reason I started fly fishing
The idea of your give away challenges is awesome. Great motivation for people wanting to get into the sport.
Thanks for making these videos and promoting practices for our streams and fish to keep them healthy
I really appreciate the the positive view of fly fishing and specifically the emphasis on the visual beauty of the species caught and the details on the Brook Trout is spectacular, please keep it👍
Thank you for reminding us that it’s not about what you have, but the love to fish. Love the videos. Keep them coming.
love the fact you show it’s not as elitist as some people may perceive fly fishing to be!
Very pretty stream. The natives are so beautiful. I love your videos. Keep up the great work.
I want to try to get into fly fishing looks like a blast
Thank you for the fly fishing introduction! I've signed up for a tie flying class just to get into this sport. Now I have to head over to the Walmart challenge.

Great video.Nice scenery and gorgeous natives...

I've been fly fishing for almost a year now and ur videos have been really help full and all your tricks and tipschave been helpful
Awesome video! I know next to nothing about fly fishing, but this was a great source to see what fly fishing is like. Very calming video, too
The first good fly line I purchased as a new fly fisherman blew my mind how a good line could make such a huge positive difference in my fishing. First time viewer. Love the action you had. What a great time.
Love the video and the fact that you prove that you don't have to spend a lot of money to catch fish!
Great video. It was really cool that you used the flies that came with the kit too. This a good lesson that presentation beats most things.
That whole video was just informatively cool 😎. Kudos Jon. Always, tight lines. Tony
Awesome, really nice video. Very calm and super zen. Keep posting, great content, love it!!
Great job man! Clear water combo is a really decent cheap combo. Onward and upward my friend hope you get everyone fly fishing.
Great video. And great job explaining and showing that you don’t have to be rich to get started in fly fishing. Seems like a great starter kit to get involved in the sport.
Glad to see the Amazon stuff works. I have one coming for my first time fly fishing this weekend. 🤞🏼
You whacked em. Nicely done! Hopefully some people are inspired to get out there and do it themselves too. Tight lines!
Just started watching your videos not too long ago because I was interested in starting to fly fish. This video helped me learn some ver valuable things and gets me excited to get my own rod to start.
Great intro to fly fishing video, not expensive as you may think, thanks for sharing.
I really enjoy watching you guys and the places you fish. That’s a cool combo!
Really cool video on breaking down how to fish a creek!!
Wow Hardman! That was a great video and you are an incredible teacher. What you said at the end is so true. Just to be out in the beauty of it all is great fish or no fish.

Fly fishing sound so fun I can’t wait to learn!
Jon you picked a hell of a stream for that challenge!! Dang that worked very well for ya!!! Beautiful fish bro!!!! Loved it…. Pass that rod on….
It’s fun watching you work the creek. I’ve been watching a bunch of your stuff learning. I caught my first brookie in the fly last summer and this year I’ve decided I’m leaving all my spinning gear at home and only fly fishing.

Making even the most grueling road trip enjoyable

Thanks for this. I’ve been watching your videos like crazy lately and I really love the way you put them together. Keep doing what you’re doing.
Man super cool to see how easy it can be to get started. Can't wait to see more videos as the temps start to warm up!
Sweet video as always! I've always wanted to get out there and fly fish, but nervous about the cost of supplies. Thanks for alleviating some of the financial burden!
I would love to finally start fly fishing, let’s go!!!
Great video for teaching beginning fly fishing
Great instructional video dude. The cinematography is on point too👌 especially in the intro. Keep up the content!
Enjoyed the video and learned a lot! Thanks for sharing!
Great video, and good stuff for someone starting out. Thank you. Don't pick me, I fly fish, give it to someone new to the sport. Thanks again
Don't need the rod set up but nice lesson with a cheaper set up!. When I first got into fly fishing, I went 19 times before I landed my 1st trout!! Been hooked ever since!
