    I love that this isn’t the mainstream “oh look I go to Walmart and buy shitty things for cheap and see if I can catch a fish!” This is educational, and perfect for starting fly anglers. Well done.

    When I was younger, I thought fly fishermen were all a bunch of rich guys. Then, when we moved to Colorado, my family got me a vest, rid and reel and flies. The first time I went out I caught a 20 inch rainbow on gold medal water. I was hooked!! Been an avid fly guy for 20 years now!!

      When I was younger, I thought they were a bunch of rich guys (at least in my area in the northeast us here)….. now that I’m grown, I realize they’re actually a bunch of rich guys who also suck at fishing! 😂😂😂. I mean. I’m KIND of joking, (I flyfish occasionally too). But honestly it makes me laugh every time I head up to the Farmington, and there’s 5 dudes in the same spot, with a combined total of 15,000$ worth of gear, who sit for 2 hours and catch nothing. Meanwhile, I’m wading down from an eighth mile upstream, and by the time I reach them I’ve caught a combination of a dozen rainbows, browns, Brookies, and even the occasional tiger or palomino rainbow, as one of those “classless spinner guys” with my abu Garcia ultralite, 4lb test, a couple split shots, an 8 or 10 barbless hook, and some juicy night crawlers. I will say panfishing with a fly rod is incredibly fun. I just never got as deeply into fly fishing as spinning because where I’m from, the fly guys look down on us spinners as low class rednecks, even if we are 100% respectful and classy, and also even though we’re tenfold out fishing them. 😩😩. Pretty sure it’s kind of just a Connecticut thing, and especially my area though.

      Yes, marketing is strong but keeping a few basics in mind, you can catch fish with just about any gear.
      True, durability is another topic….😅

    Really enjoyed your video. This is exactly what we were trying to accomplish when we designed the assortment. Anglers have the misconception that fly fishing is a difficult and expensive sport. That assortment is designed to give anglers a great experience at an extemely reasonable price.

    As someone who started fly fishing the last year I caught about 30 trout in a morning on a orvis starter combo, some random flies I had no idea about, and had the best fishing trip of my life. I literally stood in 50 degree water in my boxers last my knees freezing my butt off because the bite was so good. This was all in Alaska. I am so lucky I live here.

I’ve been under the impression that Walmart fly fishing rod was not going to cut it so I held back from buying it and never took up fly fishing and other fly fishing setup were too expensive for a beginner. Now, I’m motivated to go get something beginner and try it out. The amazing fact is you caught fish with it. However, I think it’s not so much the fly rod, but more the fisher man.

      Try it at least just a bit,as fly fishing outfits are actually pretty versatile depending on your setup and your lure selections. Seems most people think they are just for trout or salmon fishing. But that is just NOT true. I've personally used a 5/6 weight fly rod rig to catch quite a few good sized pan fish (bluegill and such) with. Hell,if I remember correctly (its been a while since I actually went fly fishing) I even caught a few good sized crappie,small bass and even a couple of what I think were shad on it as well. So yeah,a fly fishing rig is DEFINITELY not a one trick pony. The biggest thing that there is to it is probably learning how to cast the rod properly.

    • @Valscorn01
      @Valscorn01 2 роки тому +3

      Give it a shot and don't be intimidated. You DO NOT need the most expensive stuff to catch fish either. I learned on a $120 combo from Cabela's. Caught countless trout, bass and panfish with it.
      If you do want to upgrade anything, YOUR LINE!!!!. It can be huge on how easy it is to cast or not. First thing i upgraded i had $75 line on a very very cheap reel. Worked even better and i still use that fly line, just on a better reel.

    • @mr.chaosvicious5968
      @mr.chaosvicious5968 2 роки тому

      @@Valscorn01 I think my starting outfit was a pretty cheap Martin combo (I think it was about 50-60 dollars) from WAL-MART of all places. Plus if you break say a cheaper $60-80 fly rod versus say a $300 or $400 one,it's gonna be much less of a big deal to you. And if I HAD to personally choose a type of flyline,it'd be a WF floating type. The WF stands for "Weight Forward" as the line is slightly weighted in the front,to help make it a bit easier to cast and give you a bit better distance as well (at least in my personal experience).
      Hope that helps a bit for anyone who is unfamiliar with fly lines. I honestly tend to only use floating fly lines,as I personally tend to lean quite a bit more towards surface type flies. I rarely use any sort of subsurface ones,I've only really used them maybe 2 or 3 times before. And whatever anyone who is inexperienced with fly-fishing does,do NOT if you can help it let your line run/rub across either pavement or rocks. As it can and often WILL eat up and damage that plastic like coating of your flyline pretty badly. And if that happens be sure to check your line to make sure it's okay. I speak from personal experience on THAT little tidbit from when I first started out.....😑

    Years ago I purchased a martin fly rod combo. I enjoyed fishing popper flies with it for crappie on farm ponds in NC. This past weekend, I dusted it off and took it up to Foscoe, NC and the local outfitter at Foscoe Fish Company set me up with some new line and a leader and flies for my old martin. The next morning I fished the Watauga River near Grandfather. It was great fun on the river although I didn't catch any trout. The rod is a 6 wt, so it could have been a little heavy for that river, but now I'm ready to go again. Your video is great encouragement to keep to get out and fish.

    I got a net angler rod and reel on Amazon for 70$ and love it, just started taking fly fishing seriously, starting to get the hang of it. Already landed my Pb bow on the fly rod. Came in at 20.5”

    HOLY FLY FISHING STUFF!!!! I have never seen a walmart with all of that fly fishing gear. All of the walmarts I have been to all have the same zoom worms, and Hard plastic baits for bass, and some inline spinners for trout, and panfish. Legit walmart

    Love that you're giving one away. I've had my little setup from Cabela's for a few months and up until then only did spin fishing. You're going to make someone very happy and very likely addicted to fly fishing!

    Yesterday I was fishing with minnows at the river, and when I was heading back I met a fly fisherman, and he ended up offering for me to use his fly rod. I was worried I'd make a fool of myself but he convinced me to try it out and I managed get the fly out onto the river after a few tries. Now I'm looking to buy a fly fishing combo, and watching tutorials/starter videos like this. After a few casts I could 100% see the appeal, and now I know that I have to catch one on the fly! Thanks for this video, man!

      That’s how I got hooked on fly fishing. I met a fly fisher on a lake who let me try out his gear. Like the guy in the fly store said it was all downhill from there. Now my spinning and bait casting gear are gathering cobwebs.

Your right I have spin fished a lot of years and am on my 3rd year of fly fishing and landing a trout on a fly especially one you have tied is something you can’t explain. Thanks for giving away a fly rod combo to someone who needs it that is awesome of you!! Keep up the great videos!!!!

    My grandpa was big into fly fishing. I got his fly reel passed down to me so I’ve been learning. It definitely is fun. I’ve only been able to fly fish my lake and pond. So I’ve only caught baby bass, crappie and bluegill so far

    I have that same setup. I bought it when my fishing companion forget her rod (ex-wife). It lives under the back seat of my truck. I have used it a couple of times. It will catch fish. You can buy tennis racquets and golf clubs from Wal-Mart. You get what you pay for though. Budget racquets and clubs and other sports equipment from Wal-Mart can cause injuries from repetitive use or improper use. A tennis racquet can cause vibrations in the wrist and elbow causing injuries. Clubs can cause energy to be transferred to the wrist, elbow, back and over time cause injury. Your point that fly fishing doesn't have to be expensive is very true. I tie flies for $0.08 or less each that are $1.50-$3+ in the shops. Buying flies from the shops is like buying diamonds the mark up is ridiculous. Great video, fly fishing doesn't have to be expensive. You're next video should be to put those cheap rods in the hands of "professionals" and see if they can catch a fish with it. A NASCAR driver will drive a Saturn like they stole it because they understand how the car will preform. Also, please use your platform to teach etiquette. New fisherman are learning bad habits, walking up on someone else who is fishing and hopping right in, walking past the river ahead of the holes spooking the fish, littering, and just not respecting the sport or surroundings. I recently watched some college age students sink a half dozen beer cans in the river because they didn't want to carry them out. I also saw a guy using worms in an artificial section of water. He played I don't speak English card. When fish and game showed up he suddenly started speaking English quite well. He swore like a sailor when he was given a $500 ticket and had his gear confiscated. Whom ever gets your rod I hope catches a ton of fish and enjoys the sport as much as you do. For most it's a passion and obsession after that first tug. The tug is the drug.
