Imagine being a 13 year old kid in 1970 and listening to Black Sabbath for the first time. I did not eventually become a metal head but I still think that Black Sabbath is one of the greatest rock bands of all times.
My sister bought the Paranoid album in spring or summer of 72, I was 11 at the time. I'd been a big music fan since the Beatles had come along, and I was just starting to get into heavier music - Grand Funk 'Live', Humble Pie 'Rockin The Fillmore', Alice Cooper 'Killer'... This was quickly my favorite song on the album.
Lucky enough to be old enough to have seen Sabbath a few times over the years. I can honestly say I have never seen anyone hit the drums so hard as Bill.
As a Drummer, you should really appreciate the physicality of Bill Ward's percussive talents. Saw Black Sabbath in 1999, and Mr. Ward absolutely stunned me with the way he ATTACKED his kit. "Oh Lord Yeah!"
Bob, I saw the Sabbath reunion show in long Island at Nassau Coliseum February 6, 1999, thirty years after their debut. Like you said I was amazed at how great, fantastic and explosive Bill Ward was. I had heard all kinds of stories that Ward night not be included because of physical limitations, etc, etc. I tell you what, Bill was absolutely on point and I really didn’t know who to zero in on cause the whole band was smoking!!! Tony,Geezer, Ozzy, Bill!!! They had more than plenty left in the tank!!! It was ferocious and I never lost interest for a second.. even in his 50s Ozzy was one hell of a front man, all of them were fucking killer!!! Whether you are into heavy music or not, it’s irrelevant because this band is about great music, feel, emotion, raw power and energy exchange between the crowd and band. Give and take, give and take, just elevating the passion and joy between each exchange between the band and crowd!!! It was way more than a concert, it was a an epic journey and enlightenment! Sabbath rules!
@@edwardcapobianco2975 Edward, I could not agree more. I was on my way home from the show before I even remembered that Godsmack opened the show, Sabbath just drove them out of my mind, completely. One of the best shows of the more than 500 I have seen since 1975. Geezer, Tony, Ozzy and Bill. So glad I got to see the original lineup, even if it was 30 years later. I will agree, SABBATH RULES!
@@bobschenkel7921 Right on Bob! I’m not a heavy metal fan at all and I don’t even like the term heavy metal because to me , Sabbath and Zeppelin didn’t need massive wattage and volume to sound heavy. They just needed Bill Ward and Geezer or Bonzo and J.P.J. to get all the heaviness that was required. They are blues bands that fuse a lot of styles and influences into their own musical creations!!! Which in turn gives them a sound that’s unlike any others. Heavy Metal oversimplifies the magnitude of what these fucking guys put into a performance and the massive energy they expend on stage!! Yeah Edward, that is a fact. However, Rock Music writers, and critics, need to use simple words and ideas to get through to many of the fans. So "Heavy Metal" and "Power Pop" and terms of that ilk are an easy out for those folks. I do like the Blues Based Rock term, it applies to most of the best bands of the 60's and 70's, the 80's a little less so. All the bands you mentioned, plus a few more, Aerosmith, The J. Geils Band, Cream, ZZ Top, even the Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers Band fall into that genre. Like I wanted to say, the best of the best, quality shows. I've done about 500 shows by all types of bands over the years, The Dead, Little Feat, Aerosmith, The WHO, The Rolling Stones, ManOWar, Outlaws, Allman Brothers, Oysterhead, Phish, Primus, P-Funk, James Brown, YES, Tom Petty, Jethro Tull, Joan Jett, Van Halen, Johnny Winter, Willie Nelson, Edgar Winter, Alice Cooper, and J. Geils. All types. Love them all, but I do have a soft spot in my heart for the Blues, and it's offshoots. Good talking to you bro.
@@bobschenkel7921 you too Bob. I like all kinds of music. Several times over the past 40 years or so I had pairs of tickets left over to concerts that I made money scalping tickets on and I decided at the last minute to go rather than go down to the venue and sell them. One time I had Barry Manilow at Jones Beach Amphitheater 5th row. This is a show I would normally never go to! I have to say the guy and his band put on a tremendous show! It was far greater than I ever would have imagined!! Big band tribute to Sinatra for 45 minutes then followed by a slew of his radio hits. I was floored at how good it was. Bill Ward, my favorite drummer and Black Sabbath, my second favorite band after The Doors. I’m so glad you’re finally getting to them, Lee. Good shit brother!
My Sister is a Black Sabbath fan. She has many of their albums. Years later I found out my Husband is a Black Sabbath fan. I asked him what's your favorite Black Sabbath song. He said "War Pigs" I saw this performance several years ago on UA-cam. Now I know why. Incredible song and performance. I Love Ozzy & Black Sabbath. 🤘🔥🤘🔥🎶
As a teenager my friends and I would put on the Paranoid album( my first owned album)and air guitar and sing with Ozzie through the whole album. Stand on the fireplace hearth and play out to a make belief crowd. 1974 through 1977. 🎸🎶👍😎 Good ol’ days. Now 65 and listening with you once more.
Yup . One of the first albums I bought with money I earned from a paper route . Funny how we repeat our grandparents, " Those were the good old days ."
There's too much awesomeness in this. Ozzie sings a different set of lyrics than the album version. It really doesn't matter. He's having so much freakin fun up there that he could be speaking Chinese and I wouldn't care. Bill Ward abuses that drum set. Pretty sure that would've been illegal in the states. What an animal.
Black Sabbath! My entry into the metal world not knowing it would keep me for decades. Lee’s face watching this was just fun to see. Great music/video choice.
this was an early 1970 live version of War Pigs where there was some lyric reworking done later for the Studio recording, original title of this song was called Walpurges, yes 2 albums recorded in 1970 with paranoid being recorded in 8 hours 1 session many songs were played one time thru and accepted as the finished product.😂 1971 came the 3rd album Master of Reality Geezer Butler maintained his composure and masterful pace through the entire song while the other 3 went wild 😂
Late 60’s to mid 70’s were a great time for music. If you saw it on TV like me, we ages as well! Luckily for all of us, when you heard it here you appreciate the music and we all hang out!
In 1970, I was 15, living in Texas where rockers were definitely in the minority. My friends and I listened to Santana, Jethro Tull Benefit, Wishbone Ash, Deep Purple in Rock, Led Zeppelin I & II, ZZ Topp's 1st Album, Black Sabbath (1st album) and Black Sabbath Paranoid (1971). I went from being a Top40 teeny-bopper to a tripping hard rock stoner that year, and stayed with that genre ever since , though I've added other favorites like Rush, Budgie, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, Lincoln Park, Tool, Limp Bizkit. Pantera, etc. etc etc. We knew the music was revolutionary for its time, but never thought it would endure as long as it has. I've met several young guys that told me they preferred this era of music to modern rock, which shocked me. I noticed that the Paris version of War Pigs has different lyrics from the album. Saw Black Sabbath with Dio in '85 and the original members at Ozzfest in '08 (?) in Sacramento. Simply amazing.
One of the bands I listened to the most when I was a teenager with the Who, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Sweet, Uriah Heep, Rush, (...). I think I'm still a teenager despite my 59 years.
Back in the 80's i gave my nephew my sabbath albums. The next time I saw him he ask "did you know Ozzy Osbourne was in black sabbath?" Yeah, I knew that
That's a great song about war and war , the drummer was he using his sticks the wrong end not a drummer, i'm a drugger so I can relate, They were interviewed and bill sad. They were trying to make it sound like a machine gun. They tried to make the music like you were in the war. What a great job.
…..that ferocity you see is called “Cocaine Induced” 😂🤣😂 Mom disapproved of Black Sabbath in her house so I had to invest in a good pair of headphones in the early to mid 70’s ! God rest her soul ❤️
Ozzy is totally the exception. That's why it only takes one lead singer to change a light bulb. They hold it and the rest of the world revolves around them.
One of my favourite bands. Got to see Sabbath in their final ever concert in Birmingham, was hoping they’d play ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’ my favourite but they didn’t 😞 Still a privilege to be there, one for the ages Checkout that song plus ‘Snowblind’ On another note I’m going to see AC/DC this Saturday 🤘 cannot wait

Imagine, weekly it seemed, now classic singles and album tracks being released, and tribally listened to the first time around, by us spotty teenagers (not worthy). Envying your first listen journey, through the archives.
I was probably 8 or 9 years old when my brothers turned me on to Black Sabbath , back in 1978 or 1979 , WOW ! The early to mid 80s they changed for me , just didn't seem as hard ! If you want another one to check out , WARNING ! Or , , Electric Funeral , used to listen to that like 10 times in a row !!
WOW! I cannot believe you have only just got to this epic track. Great reaction Lee, we reacted in a very similar fashion when the album Paranoid came out. I saw them live a few times back then, always great.
OZZY! One of, if not THE original headbangers! I was VERY slow to come around to Sabbath/Ozzy. I was just barely 17 when this came out! I didn't start to appreciate them/him until around 1005, after utube came out. Actually, I fell in love with The Osbournes (show), and that crazy family BEFORE I actually did a deep dive into Sabbath and Ozzy's music. Been a big fan ever since!!!.
Bill Ward has s great voice as well. Sang on Black Sabbath's It's Alright from Technical Ecstasy and Swinging The Chains from Never Say Die. He also did some great solo material.
You just witnessed greatness on such a massive scale!!! This whole concert is 🔥 Bill Ward shines so bright on this one! Each member stood so tall musically! These aren't the lyrics the made the studio version. Maybe they were still writing it. Anyways, excellent choice. Try "Sweet Leaf"
I was curious about the reaction of a young drummer. I played in a cover band from 1990, as a beginner drummer this track was a big challenge. But I liked playing this one the most out of the whole repertoire.
Still the greatest Hard Rock/ Heavy Metal song of All-Time, Ozzy at 21 years old, I was 8 in 1970, didn't listen to Sabbath till about 1976, FAIRIES WEAR BOOTS is # 3 All-Time for me.
This is from their 1970 first album tour. I got to see the Paranoid tour in London in 1971 then again 1972. It was crazy. Bill with only a single kick and drum.
The Cake cover version is not bad but can't touch this song, more like an unplugged wee brother. My big brother had this and I was listening every time he left the house. Never gets old.
As always , I really enjoy your insight into bands I grew up with. Age is just a number young fella. Your discernment and ability to crystalize the musical zeitgeist of the time is what really matters. Your doing god's work. Keep it up ✌️
Ward was such a hammer head!.......He was top of the mark during this period. Bonham got most of the accolades in 69-70, but BIll was right up there!. Not just a basher, but someone who hit hard with style and intention. Ozzy was a brilliant lead singer at this time. A true heavy riffing grooving band, that set the standard.
Love this song! The lyrics were different for this live version, but to see the performance... another great reaction, Lee. Check out Faeries Wear Boots by Sabbath.
Excellent reaction Lee and I love how into you got I love how Ozzie is so into the music. Is he the first HeadBanger 🤔? He let's the band shine and doesn't need all the attention Tho when he sings..BAM straight from the heart Shout out to the Incredible Amazing Geezer Butler who doesn't get the credit And of course Bill Wards drumming is top tier. So much power
Fuck man, we have to make fun of & equally love Black Sabath! They were fucking Hippies but this screen would have never existed without Tony, so I'm extremely fucking grateful!

I didn't end up being a big BSabbath fan but I have a huge amount of respect for those cats.
That whole album rocks hard dude!
Bill Ward has s great voice as well. Sang on Black Sabbath's It's Alright from Technical Ecstasy and Swinging The Chains from Never Say Die. He also did some great solo material.
Got my first Guitar because of this song., well first electric i should say,
If it was possible I would go, without doubt, directly back to the 70s…4sure! Best decade Evr! BAM!!! ⭐️👊⭐️👊⭐️
I wish they would have shown Geezer a lot more, he rocks out in concert, saw them many times back in the 70's ✌️🎶
He’s holding the drum sticks upside down
You just witnessed greatness on such a massive scale!!! This whole concert is 🔥 Bill Ward shines so bright on this one! Each member stood so tall musically! These aren't the lyrics the made the studio version. Maybe they were still writing it. Anyways, excellent choice. Try "Sweet Leaf"
his fills and and sense of feel feel jazzy sometimes. Almost like he's a really really heavy jazz drummer.
"Sweet Leaf" is definitely worth a listen.
One of the Unholy Trio...
Single kick, small jazz kit, sticks backyards and I dare say early blast beat technique. Bill is a warrior on those drums.
Pure power back there. Insane.
Little known fact: Bill Ward's drum kit stole his car and killed his puppy.
As always , I really enjoy your insight into bands I grew up with. Age is just a number young fella. Your discernment and ability to crystalize the musical zeitgeist of the time is what really matters. Your doing god's work. Keep it up ✌️
This was fantastic thank you for sharing it and your thoughts 😊
11:41 - "98-99% of the hard rock - metal bands any of that stuff that came after them. I don't think they've got $#!+ on that, dude."... Amen brother.
Amazing!!!👍👍
Great song and reaction
I was 13 me and my junior high friends snuck into the concert it was normal 😮 we hitch hiked to a different concert at least 3 times a month
Man I’m so jealous of y’alls generation…. Sounds like a good ol time. Mine was all doom and gloom and drugs
What energy.😊
Exactly! These guys are amazing 🤩
Love the alternate lyrics on this one. Bill Ward look pissed that night.😂
Ozzie had it good. They were such a talent. When they call a muscian a beast , this group was a whole zoo of beasts.
I would say this is a rare video since this is one of the early versions with original lyrics.
Excellent reaction Lee and I love how into you got
I love how Ozzie is so into the music. Is he the first HeadBanger 🤔?
He let's the band shine and doesn't need all the attention
Tho when he sings..BAM straight from the heart
Shout out to the Incredible Amazing Geezer Butler who doesn't get the credit
And of course Bill Wards drumming is top tier. So much power
Fuck man, we have to make fun of & equally love Black Sabath! They were fucking Hippies but this screen would have never existed without Tony, so I'm extremely fucking grateful!
OZZY!!! ❤❤
This is not the height of their powers; they had just released their first album. Also, it is metal. It's Tony iommi (eye-OWE-me).
