  • I don't know about you, but I lift my hood often, and it has got to be one of the heavest hoods I have ever tried to raise. With these RedLine Tuning Hood Struts, it makes the job so much easier.
    Redline Tuning Hood Struts: amzn.to/3mzE4ei
    Tools Required:
    • Pop Rivet Gun with 3/16 fitting : amzn.to/3oiIOFv
    • Blue Tape: amzn.to/36yJHDT
    • Sharpie/marker: amzn.to/3qk2Cdn
    • Tape Measure: amzn.to/39Es8Ei
    • Punch: amzn.to/3mxkUFK
    • Hammer: amzn.to/2Vs6z1k
    0:54 hood bracket measure up from the hood hinge 19", and mark a line on some blue tape. Place the bottom of the bracket with the ball facing toward the engine on the line. Measure from the outside of the bracket to the outside of the hood, 2.25". When the bracket is in place, mark the lower hole location. Center punch the drill hole location and drill hole with a 3/16" drill bit. Then hole punch and drill hole for upper hole location, and repeat the process on the opposite side of the hood.
    4:02 Before installing the lower bracket, you need to remove the plastic piece of trim. First, you need to pop the clip on the top using a screwdriver and then push the trim in towards the engine. It should pop off easily. Placing the tape measure against the vertical steel behind the fender support, its located directly below the hood hinge, measure 12.5" towards the front of the truck. Mark a line on some blue tape. Place the back of the bracket with the ball facing toward the engine on the line. When the bracket is in place, mark the hole closest to the line you drew. Center punch the drill hole location and drill hole with a 3/16" drill bit. Then hole punch and drill hole for the other hole location, replace the trim piece, and repeat the process on the opposite side of the hood.
    7:34 Install the gas springs with the larger section on the top. The struts simply snap over the balls with a slight bit of force. It might be best to have a friend help you hold the hood at this point. Be sure they snap into location.

    Redline's video shows the ball of the upper bracket faces the outside not toward the motor.

    Great job! They recommend painting the area you drilled, preventing rust. I also recommend a tiny bit of ball grease to deter water in the rivet. I'll be using your video as a guide!!

      Yeah, I don't live in an area where it rusts, it's more of a safety for them. But you are correct. Some ball grease is a good idea

    Just did mine with the Redline link, worked great!!! The only thing I had to modify and open up a little was the whole on the brackets for the revit install. Man I'm so happy, should have done this years ago!!! Thank you for all your work and making it so easy with the links!!!

    I just installed these in my 2020 TRD Sport Tacoma, and they work great. My only issue is that I wish they had a longer range of motion to allow the hood to open farther. Other than that, no complaints whatsoever. These things are solid and make easy work of lifting the hood.

    Thanks for this very helpful video. I have a 2016 tacoma trd sport, and yes that hood is super heavy. I'll be getting a set of struts when the weather breaks here in nj

    You should put a note in the video that this is NOT for the max lift edition. I followed your video and got the wrong measurements. Had to drill out rivets and changed the strut location as a result

    I think you install the top bracket wrong. The ball stud part is supposed to be facing outwards the truck and not facing the engine according to the instructions. Also, it’s 2.5” not 2.25” from the edge of the hood. It’s also recommend to use touch up paint on all drilled holes to prevent rust on exposed metal.

    I need the install video for the max lift 21-27016-02 struts that open an extra 7”. Both are the same price , so why buy these shorter struts ? If anyone has a link , please post it for the max lift install by redline. Thank you

    Exactly how high does it raise your hood? I just had these installed on my 2018 Tacoma and it feels like it doesn't open the hood quite high enough. The kickstand won't even go into the hole because the hood sits so low. Thanks in advance

    • @BurtBowers
      @BurtBowers Рік тому +1

      Sounds to me who ever installed them didn't install them in the right spot why the hood isn't going up far enough, even in this video appears that the struts was not installed back far enough to raise the hood up further, installation like this takes precise measurements to be certain the hood is raised fully open & not looking like it's only opened part way.

    Quick question. Isn’t the nub on the hood bracket supposed to face out way from the engine? I was looking at the instructions and another video.

    • @SnailTrail4x4
      @SnailTrail4x4  4 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure how you would mount it so the nub faces away from the engine. Are you sure you were watching the correct generation Tacoma video? I did a video on the second gen and it was slightly different than the 3rd Gen.

    • @surfingredneck1060
      @surfingredneck1060 4 роки тому +1

      Yes I saw your 2nd and 3rd gen videos. I also looked at the install download from Redline and it shows the same for 3rd gen (2016+) Tacoma’s. I’m just preparing for when mine arrive.

    • @frankjm543
      @frankjm543 4 роки тому

      Yeah, on the instructions I received the top ball faces out and the lower ball faces in toward the engine so it is holding it on opposite sides and vertically the balls are in a straight line.

    Very good job. I'm thinking of installing such struts on my car form months. I can't understand why those are not pre-installed by the manufacturer. Fortunately, I found yesterday that for my car there is a special kit to purchase, and the car itself has provision for this installation. It is weird since the kit cost me about $20 on eBay. So why it wasn't installed by the manufacturer? Just one comment on your installation. Holes for rivets can be drilled to have them inserted loose. By pulling the rivet's shank all the gaps are being felt.

      There is so much that is no longer included that used to be a stock items on cars/trucks. Unless you upgrade to a premium model (at huge expense), you have to either pay someone else, or have the mechanical aptitude to DIY it. A dealership would charge you an hour of labor plus 250% markup on the struts to have them installed. What you paid $20 and installed yourself would have cost you in the neighborhood of $200 at a dealership.

      @@aeromedical6750 I've purchased the kit a year ago and installed it perfectly with some improvement. The bolts provided in the kit do not fit the hood so I've added special spacers. It works with no problem. The kit is so cheap In China so I've purchased a spare kit 🙂

      @@dannyf4995 - outstanding. I actually enjoy working on my truck as a form of therapy. Not only can you save a lot of money in labor by doing it yourself, but you get the satisfaction of seeing your own end result. If you’re not intimidated by doing these modifications, it’s a great way to learn new things. There are a lot of great UA-camrs out there who specifically specialize in modifying the Tacomas. They are great teachers and encourage you to get your hands a little dirty without the worry of messing up your truck.

    This is an awesome video!! Thanks!! Love the struts and no longer have to deal with the lifting of the heavy hood and the kickstand! I would use a disclaimer on your video. "When drilling into the hood, use extreme caution not to let your drill bit go through too fast. It may result in damage to the outer hood surface (dimples). Yeah I was that guy#@&*(!#

    • @dabbles1000
      @dabbles1000 2 роки тому

      I almost did the same, I was surprised how the drill pulls when you break through. Especially my Dewalt bits they really grab combined with pressure. Right before breaking through need to minimize to almost no pressure and allow bit to do the work
