I lift my hood once every 6 months to change the oil and I have no problem with the factory setup. That’s the the great thing about owning a Toyota there is never a need to be lifting the hood 😉
I am a big fan and I am an old man. I enjoy your videos. I have a 21 TRD Off Road (my first Toyota P/U). I installed the Redline elite struts today. What I did differently was I cut pieces of wood exactly 12.5" and 19". I taped them down so all I had to do is butt the ball brackets up to them to mark the holes. I had a step drill bit so the rivet fit was perfect. I learned a long time ago to check the oil at every fill up. This makes sure I have eyes on my engine compartment regularly. Now lifting the hood is effortless.
The Tacoma has one of the heaviest hoods I have seen.
And still it wobbles and ripples going down the highway as if it were made of tin. Sigh…
Then you have one of the weakest hands I’ve heard of.
@@cosmotraumatika7474brah it does do that wtf lmao 😅 I was like uh why my hood moving like that
Another great video. The painters tape wrapped onto your drill bit, as a depth stop, is really a good thing to do. I used a length of rigid plastic tubing for the same purpose. You definitely do not want your drill to pull through the hood.
See my suggestion above re: stop collars.
I ordered one pair of these and they sent me 2 7 months ago. They work great, and it is nice having backups😁
The mechanic trick for drill stop is cut a proper length fuel hose and slip it over the bit only exposing enough cutting length to get through 😉
Great video as usual. One option for rivet guns is pneumatic which can cost in the $30 to $60 range instead of costly electrical ones. If you already have air tools (which many DIY mechanics have) and a compressor, you can save a bundle.
Ayyyy killing it with the videos dude nice work nice struts nice install!! I wanna pick these up soon
Thanks for the discount code. My truck, which I ordered in January, finally arrived two days ago. I’ve saved your videos in my watch list for all the modifications I knew I wanted to do!!
Awesome job Chloe. You make that Tacoma look great! Also, try using a step stool to get a better angle using that rivet gun. Kudos 👌
Greatly appreciate this video. I have been contemplating doing this for weeks, it is now time to get it done. We appreciate your great informative videos. Thx Chloe.
yea Chloe ! love this mod. I see you got urself a spring loaded center punch. A quick drill bit stop to use if you do not have any, is a piece of vacuum hose, fuel line, etc. that will slip over the drill bit. Cut it to length that covers up the bit up to the depth that you need. The hose acts just like what your tape does, only it is a better stop than tape that might not stop the bit. But you took your time and got the job done ok. I'm just giving you other options the next time you need a drill stop. You rock Chloe!
Thanks for the discount code. My 2022 TRD Off-road , which I ordered back in January finally arrived two days ago. I’ve been watching your channel for a while and saving all of the videos for the modifications I’ve been planning to do
I have the 2nd-gen Tacoma kit, and they come with self-tapping sheet metal screws for the fender mounts. My rivet gun is like yours, and they're always hard to use, especially with smaller hands. The trick is to open it all the way after each full squeeze. First squeeze is easy, 2nd is a bit tough, and the 3rd one--which should be the final--is almost impossible. Very satisfying to hear that snap.
Beware !!! If you plan on adding a K&N cold air intake system, the heat shield around the air filter will prevent the strut from closing. I had to modify the heat shield by cutting out a small section to allow the strut to come all the way down. Another option was to remove the rivets and find a different placement for the bracket, which could’ve lead to other problems. My advice, install your cold air intake system before considering this mod. I will say, however, the struts are awesome and nice to have. Thanks Chloe!
Good video very informative I enjoy watching your channel because I’m always learning something new about installing items on truck and how to fix trucks keep up the good work Chloe 💯💪🏾😊
Nice!!! Well, you may be short, but your mods are big and very much appreciated that you've shared them!
Defintely one of the first things i'm doing when i get my Taco
Rivets are very easy to do. What you were doing wrong is when you squeeze it the first time you need to release the tool and slide it up the rivet so the tip of the tool is touching the hood again (in this case). Squeeze one more time and that's it. They will break off.
They make struts of the rivets longer in case you are using it on thick material.
If you want to remove it, use same size (if not smaller) drill bit you used for the holes and simply drill trough the rivet.
I drive a toyota tacoma 2014 in red crew cab model and I love my truck!!
Also. The fact a $40k vehicle doesn’t come with this is a crime. Definitely getting them.
Nice :) I went with the single strut, left one was banging up against my air compressor.
I did exactly what you did but I haven't gotten to the drilling part especially the hood find your marks on the tape wrap as many layers if tape about 1/4 inch back from the tip to keep from going thrue the hood all you want is the drill bit size they the company recommend and it's two layer on the hood drill slow here and buy the red lines the rivets are hard but use two hands make sure the rivet is in the gun and drilled hole all the way.
To avoid drilling too deep and dimpling the hood - Slip a drill stop collar onto the bit. Easy peasy.
Khloe, I've been following your channel since I bought my Tacoma last month on the 1th. I really like the content and have followed your recommendations on mods. I liked the hood strut idea right away. I went with your recommendation to buy from Tacoma Beast but wish I had not. I ran into a snag when attempting the install and emailed them on Friday, Saturday and then Sunday and got no response until Tuesday. The written instructions say to measure 16 to 16-1/4 " from the hinge mounting point on the hood (depending on the year of your Tacoma of course mine is a 2023 and it is not addressed at all The kit I received is for 2005-2015 Toyota Tacoma
QuickLIFT Installation Guide). But at that point, the upper strut mount can not be mounted due a factory supplied hole in the hood. Their You tube video says what the Redline video says, measure 19" from the hinge mount point. The disparity in the written vs the video instructions made me halt installation. I didn't want to make a mistake. Tacoma Beast boasts great customer service and that is one reason I went with your recommendation even though I Could have saved a few dollars by ordering the Redline Kit from Amazon. Tacoma Beast's lack of response makes me re-think ever ordering from them in the future. All I needed was clarification on the initial measurement from the hinge to the upper strut mount The written instructions supplied with the hardware said 16 to 16-1/4 " and he You Tube instructions said 19". Perhaps I just have the wrong set of instructions for my 2023 Tacoma. But had they replied to my emails that could have all been straightened out.
Was waiting for this video to see which ones you had installed, i riveted mine also and had same mindset for choosing not to have the bolt on ones. They also tend to not allow for one finger raising of hood like the riveted ones do.
I found that the rivets are extremely difficult to break off. I had a friend who had an electric gun and it made my life a lot easier. The hood struts are great. I also removed the hood rod makes the job look cleaner.
I was waiting for it…”and I will mention that the last reason I decided to instal hood struts was because….they were FREE!”
LoL
What did they cost?
@@timhobbs1229 I’m guessing free for her
Glad to see you rise to the occasion.
I just put mine on last weekend. What a difference
Drilling ain’t that bad but just be careful and measure a few times!!
Got the same hood struts and I love them!
What was the cost?
Chloe, Chloe, Chloe.. Use Safety glasses especially when drilling overhead, even to the side. Those shavings can whip off to the side. Personal experience, I had a shaving in my eyelash, eyelid, or eyebrow (not sure) hours later, when I went to bed, it fell into my eye. Trip to E.R. at 2am, to have my doctor surgically remove the shaving from my cornea. No fun.. just saying. Anyway, love the video, I have been thinking about installing these for awhile. Great video! We appreciate you!
In the past month I upgraded to the Redline Tuning Struts, as well. I have to comment on the no-drill type. I had a set of those for about 8 months. After a period of time, I noticed the lower support ball pin which screwed into the driver fender ground location was bending forward. Examining it closer, the sheet metal it was mounted on was pulling outward. Obviously, the sheet metal was not designed to support that heavy hood (more specifically - at a "point" location on the metal). The passenger side threaded hole was dimpled around the sheet metal as well when I removed the Sokietech hardware. Those fender locations are fine for a grounding mount, they are basically a nut spot welded to the fender sheet metal. I will never again recommend those Sokietech hood struts.
You have installed the Struts Up Side down 😮😮

If you have a hammer, you can tap the top of the rivet gun to drive the rivet into position, then squeeze the handles. You can put a section of pipe (emt conduit?) on each handle to increase the leverage. THose supplied rivets eem a little long, you might find a shorter 3/16" rivet 'cause Tacoma sheet metal's not so thick. Also, check the cost of that 'add-on' rivet gun against one from Harbor Freight tools, for instance that likely comes with an assortment of rivets. Mine has lasted thirty years or so. And I have another cheap one that has to be fifty years old.
The instructions that you provided was great on the Redline gas hood struts! But, I would spend a little extra dollars and purchase a better rivet tool. The drill stop was helpful, but I did not use it. I just took my time, excellent video Chloe - kudos on your Toyota Tacoma mod videos
I need to get those ASAP!
3:56 OLD MAN EMU BOXES! Great video Chloe. You're helping me with my shopping list. :-)
Another good job. Enjoy watching your videos. Looking forward to the next one.
About rivets... my friend and I recently installed a snorkel on his truck that required a bunch of rivets. We borrowed a battery powered rivet gun from Milwaukee and it made the process really easy, and the rivets were really secure. They're pricey but I'd recommend getting one if you plan on doing rivets in the future. I had hated doing rivets up to that point.
LOL... and then you suggest an electric rivet gun. I'll shut up now.
Haha, you can read my mind 😅
Nice video and clear instruction. BTW, would you mind putting together a video regarding the aftermarket grill or something similar? Thx.
instead of rivets, can I use all self tapping screws for the entire install? which is better?
I hate rivet guns and have been looking for a electric rivet gun for awhile. I found a rivet gun that fits into the end of a drill but it looked bulky. Then I found out that Makita makes a compact rivet gun. Makita 18V Cordless Brushless Rivet Gun DRV250Z.
Just installed mine today. I was so hesitant on drilling holes. I measured about 10 times for each hole making sure they were the correct measurements lol measure 10 times, drill once, right?
That’s badass. Looks clean to and oem
I noticed the hood liner on the inside…was that an aftermarket install?
Your vid’s are awesome. Thanks so much.
Need to do this. Love your videos!
I got the sokitek struts..I was thinking of putting a pull down lanyard on mine jus to make it easy to pull down...but good job!
I just installed the Redline Turning QuickLift on my 23' Tacoma. Pretty easy and straightforward. One recommendation that worked great for me was getting a slightly bigger Riveter which gave me more leverage. I got a 17 inch from Harbor Fright for under 20 bucks and made the rivets super simple. The smaller ones are really hard to use. How are these holding up for you Chloe? That would be my only concern but frankly, they seem to be high quality so I bet they'll last a few years and maybe beyond... Great video as always 🙏
Great advice on the riveter… I remember how much of a struggle that was! My hood struts have been holding up great! So glad I installed them
Strange that Toyota did not put gas hood struts on the Tacoma. Do they now? Both my 2022 4Runner and 2014 Sequoia have them from the factory. If they did not, I too would install the Max Lift struts you mentioned and I'm 6-04. BTW, 5-05 is not short. My wife is a perfect 4-11!!
Where I respect your opinion on the No Drill struts, I've had mine on for about a year and have No issues. They go through being engineered and tested like any other product.
What's the cost
@@timhobbs1229 about the same.10 minute install and on down the road.Have had mine for a year too with no issues.Fits perfect with the Injen CAI too.Redline would probably get in the way and you would only be able to run one!😏Oh… add some blue loctite to the bolts for insurance!
@@timhobbs1229 You can find them for around $100 or a little less and it's a much easier install
I just installed the bolt on hood struts and it took 20 mins and they are amazing. Screw drilling and riveting. Hood is a solid 4” higher, and just for a bill.
I’m not sure if you are aware, but I clicked on the link you have provided for the good struts you said you installed, but the link is for hood struts for model years 2005-2015. I unfortunately ordered these and got them delivered before I realized they were for the wrong year, as I have a 2022. You might want to change the link in your description, as I’m pretty sure your Tacoma is at least a 2020-2021
makita makes a battery powered rivet gun that uses the battery system that you own
Hi Chloe Kuo you installed it for new gas hood struts looks cool!!!
Do a video on the Tacoma vs stuff. Like rocks and hail. How it holds out against it.
Self tapping screws 😊
Thank you Chloe for the video! Just made up my mind to get the NO-DRILL struts

Did you have to sleep under the hood? How often do you have to open it up?
You got TacomaYeast 😬
When you go fishing, does your pole squirt up and out on it's own? 🤔
It would be great if they could make the extended ones so they stopped at both stock and extended heights.
Do the extended work with ditch lights?
Great video. But.... I'm not ready to drill holes in my hood. I worry already about rust everywhere.
Just one question, Why did you wait so long, one of the first things I did to my 2020. Enjoy all your videos , Mahalo!
Nice. Good job. Next you will need engine bay lights.
If you take care of them and don't slam them down they will last. I love how people say they will just blow. OK. I'll use the rod for insane jobs
Hey Chloe,
Check out Faye Hadleys channel. She did this on her 4runner. Excellent job too.
I'm very proud of you 😌
I put in the redline. You don't know what you've missed until you put struts in.
Annoying right? The new Volkswagen GTI also just has a prop... and used to have struts. Odd cost savings.
I am on the same boat...been thinking about the hood struts but drilling into a new truck had me worried.
Very cool
Nice!!
your awesome.
Really cool!!
Are you still able to let the hood slam shut. I usually let go of the hood a few inches off the air to shut it.
Don’t like rivets once they start to become loose it’s a pain and it’s not something you can fix out and about. You have to drill out the rivet or grind it off then replace it with a new one I really don’t like rivets I’d rather have a knot in a bolt straight forward to replace. Nylon nuts not lightly to come on done, Once again really don’t like rivets lol
Hey Chloe, what model of watch do you wear? Keep up with great vids!!!!👍
I’m considering a Tacoma. I’m 6’ 1” 220 pounds for simple yard work.
I own a sequoia 5.7 for family etc.
Think I fit in the Tacoma?
Your link went to 2nd gen Tacoma version so be careful when you're following that
44 grand and no hood struts....🙄
My wife is 4' 11 3/4", my daughter is 4' & 1/2 ", your tall.
Too bad they don't have any for 1st gen Tacos. I went with Spikers.
I love this girl
Didnt even know they still made trucks with the prop
$75 shipped on ebay no drill. Installed in under 10 minutes.
No drilling for me, It's not like I lift the hood everyday!
Yo Chloe.... ur cool bro 😎
What did you use to wash the engine? Do you have a video for detailing your engine?
Check out her video titled-Detailing my Tacoma’s engine bay!
@@zelaznog65 thank you! 👍🏻
Another great video. I was wondering how your dash cam is doing?. I'm still shopping dash cams for my Tacoma
So far, so good! It’s been almost 2 years
@@ChloeKuo cool thank you
Does anyone have a power trays on the right and arb on the left know if the struts get in the way or will the struts work with that set up.
Yes. You need the single struts off running4tacos
👍👍👍
We’re I’m from they will leak in two to three years I would feel
Too bad TacomaBeast don't make anything for GMC Canyon
👍👊
I'm not drilling holes into my truck.
Its a toyota, you wont need to pop the hood other than short simple maintenance. Dont think thats a necessary mod
Now there in your way on the side of your truck.
Not a fan of Tacoma beast.. super slow shipping and they make you wonder if you’ll actually get your order
Christopher Carr wants to know why you'd associate yourself with
a company who defaces trails but I hope
the free hood struts were worth it..
Thanks _ i just ordered the drill less version only because they are easier but i tend to agree with you on the physics of the redline struts. They do appear to be in a better position.
Thanks - I really like the presentation of your videos and all the great information - keep up the great work!
Believe me, you won't be disappointed
