Take a look at the Bulova Lunar Pilot if you want a re-edition of a watch that has flown to the Moon... Steel, Sapphire, high frequency quartz. About 500 bucks I think. Probably a better deal than the Moon Swatch .

Completely agree. They started out great, but really messed up in the long run here in my opinion. Especially after the quality concerns came to light. Just saw a guy who accidentally scratched up the crystal by closing the box wrong. If they were put online straight away as “will be delievered when available” I would have happily bought at least one, even if it meant waiting months for delivery then being pleasantly surprised when it eventually shows up. But now I haven’t even thought about it for at least a week or two, and if they ever put them online now I won’t buy one as I’ve had time to realise maybe I don’t want one as much as I initially thought

Managed to get one on release day and I wear it everyday. I enjoy wearing it just as much as the day I first bought it. I like learning about different watches, especially the moonwatch and it’s history (I aspire to buy the real one in the future). Unfortunately, I don’t have the money to buy thousand dollar watches. Even though some may mock the idea of wearing a $250 plastic watch, I don’t really care. I’m happy when I wear it and that’s all that matters. Witnessed all the carnage when the store finally opened and all the louts decided to push in, and swatch being completely unprepared. I had to spend a lot of money and hours of time travelling to London, then waited for hours in the cold. Not at all impressed by Swatch / omega. How to drain every ounce of good spirit that was gained by a release, a masterclass! I went to my Swatch store over the weekend, that had them on the release day, and not only did they not have any for sale, even the display case was empty so you couldnt even see them first hand. I totally agree with the comments here. I just want the colour that I want (Earth or Pluto for me) as a fun watch, and this has changed this from a fun hyped watch to a just another status symbol of the watch industry that I probably wont be able to pick up.... and so I am looking back at the Lunar Pilot. The MoonSwatch has lost that element of fun and carefree attachment. In 6 months I might remember that I wanted one of those and pop into a Swatch store to take a look, but right now its just something that I dont want enough to jump through the hoops that Swatch seem to think that I should to own one. I think that will be a mistake from them, from underestimating the demand initially, to over-estimating the desire now.

Especially knowing people will see the original speedmaster as the stainless steel version of the moonswatch and not the other way around.

I got my Saturn on release day. Drove from Phoenix to Las Vegas the day before and waited in line for 12 and half hours (32 hours awake) from when I claimed my place til I left the store with the bag.
I left work the day prior thinking I was insane, the trip foolhardy and pointless. Even when I got in line at 10:32pm I looked at the queue ahead and thought "I'm really gonna sit here by myself until morning only to be met with disappointment". But I stood there. I was #158 out of 237 available.
I stood there because I will never be able or feel comfortable spending thousands on a my grail real Omega Speedmaster. I stood there because my dad bought me a Swatch when I was 12 in 2003 and it still runs. I love my Mission to Saturn because it represents a passion I have in a fun package for the everyman. A month in? I wear my Moonswatch proudly over Seiko divers and chronographs, over my Seagull 1963, over the various Casio's and few Vostoks.
I'm glad I made the trip when it happened, had I done it now it would be guaranteed to not be available. I feel for everyone who can't get one. Because it is satisfying and special. It's also the first watch I didn't attain my placing in a cart and waiting in the mail. It was an ordeal and has a story. I like that.

Well, as it turns out I'm already over this fad. I'd rather see a new version of Swatch's automatic Sistem51 movement with GMT or chrono function... I think they might have something with their super-cost-efficient mass-produced Sistem51 mechanical movements. That's a real USP over all the ordinary quartz movements. It might just take a while for them to really catch on, or maybe they're still missing the 'hit' designs. And until they offer those with the complications I'm interested in (GMT or Chrono) I like Swatch's other transparent models more than these MoonSwatches.
And for cheap Swiss watches for everyday use I'm a million times more interested in Victorinox INOX line. They have quartz and automatic, stainless steel, titanium or carbon (but not available as titanium&automatic combo). Even nice straps with wood trim or the paracord strap. They also are missing a GMT or Chrono function to be perfect for me, but nevertheless they're really nice. Superb quality and comfort.
Sure, the INOX watches are at a higher price class, but not that much higher. They are 'proper' Swiss watches, really high quality and forever: their swiss movements can be fixed and replaced, crystals are high quality and can be replaced, they can be kept going for future generations instead of being flimsy & unfixable like the Omega x Swatch.

The reason why they decided not to sell online is due to resellers. Resellers have expensive bots that automatically order hundreds of watches when the online sale begins… this would allow resellers to control the inventory and profit from the hype. I think its good that they did not allow this to happen… exactly as we saw with sports cards in the last 2 years.

I recently bought a lovely gold (albeit plated) Omega Constellation F300 tuning fork watch for £220. It even had the original box and papers. So £20 more for an infinitely more interesting, only slightly less waterproof watch. I also don't need to correct anyone with the 'actually, it's a swatch' line...! This could have been an epic win for Omega if they'd made it as freely available as expected, feels like a failed venture now.

I honestly forgot about these watches until I saw this video. I had checked for a few days if there was any news for an online release, because i wished it did. But seeing the crazy hype and the lack of supply was kind of a turn off as it made the customers look like zombies or beggars who would gather around a swatch store wasting hours just to get a simple watch. I hated that with the iphones and i hated it now (at least iphones have enough supplies). This for me became less about horology and more about a cash grab for the company and about the very disposable and wasteful human nature of running after the next coolest thing forever. The character of this watch for me is as hollow as the "bioceramic" plastic it's made of. Seems like the Swiss watch industry has forgotten how to make something which the majority can enjoy after Seiko and Casio kicked their butts with quartz.

    Two words: HORRENDOUS MARKETING.
The fact that both Omega and Swatch hyped up the release without having the capacity to produce just illustrates how bad their marketing (and basic market research) is. While watch enthusiast disdain/impatience for Rolex increases, Omega is (meanwhile) falling into 3rd place behind bloody Cartier because it doesn't have the strategic vision to seize this moment. I think hype overwhelms one's better judgement. This is a good time to ask ourselves, does this watch offer anything unique in terms of design or function? Is it a good value for the price? Will it stand the test of time? For me, it's standout feature is that it looks like a Speedmaster and you can get it in a variety of colors. But a few years down the line, how would I feel wearing one? I don't know. The cynical part of me thinks Swatch Group probably knows the answer to this question and is milking the hype for all its worth.

    • @pistonburner6448
      @pistonburner6448 2 роки тому +3

Good questions. My immediate answer is that the design and very unique Omega co-branding is worth a lot! Overall it's just a really cheerful, refreshing phenomenon overall. It also is now a part of horological history.
But as I've written elsewhere I don't think the substance matches the overall concept and what people would want them to be: it's a fragile, disposable short-lived piece. It's not really suitable as a watch to keep or collect due to its expected short life and throwaway inability to be repaired.
I think it's an inspired product they've come up with, but to be perfect IMO it should have a replaceable&serviceable movement and crystal. Then it would be a legendary collectible watch. Now, who knows if those will even be working in a few years!
So direct answers to you questions:
-Does this watch offer anything unique in terms of design or function? Yes!! Incredibly much design-wise!! It has now made history even!
-Is it a good value for the price? Yes, so-so. Basic watch with a premium price _for good reason_ : the Omega branding and great design means an extra bonus is justified.
-Will it stand the test of time? No. Experts please chime in: I've heard that this movement only works for a limited amount of years no matter what you do, apparently approx. 10 years. And any mishap with the crystal and it's done (it's welded so not replaceable). Throwaway stuff, not guaranteed to last.
-But a few years down the line, how would I feel wearing one? If it's still working then you'll feel great, but it might be trash by then.
All in all I'd rather go for 'proper' Swiss watches that really will last forever, some nice ones only cost about a few hundred more. But they're not 'phenomenon watches' so are they the same? I guess they will be as special or even more so if you buy them for your _own_ memorable achievement/occasion, instead of like the Swatch-Omega being special due to others making it a generically 'special' thing due to fashion and it being a hype-watch.

However, not living within a couple of hundred miles of a Swatch boutique that may or may not have stock, there is zero chance that I would would divert 20m to enter one and ask, let alone make a 400 mile round trip. I buy lots of watches at all price points (don't tell my wife, she thinks I only buy one a year for less than a £100 and if the truth comes out, I'm a dead man), so if they do start selling them online in the next few months or years, I'll buy one or more then. In the meantime, there are way too many better and more interesting watches to invest time on researching and lusting after (the best bit) and then acquiring for me to give any more thought to it until the supply opens up. I really, really hope that the scalpers and flippers invest heavily in these few available MoonSwatches and end up getting their fingers burned if Swatch Group get their head out of their a**e and sort their production and supply issues. I was luck to get 2. I also have the original moonwatch. My verdict: the moonswatch is specially fun to wear in summer, it is light, colourfull, easy to read. Since it is battery powered, it always shows the correct time. It is the watch of 2022. One negative comment will be the lack of availability.

Wow, what a missed opportunity. They could have made a ton of money by making these actually available, especially while excitement was peaked. I would've bought at least a few, but definitely not hopping on a plane to hope some random color might be available, lol.
Having now p*ssed off potential buyers, plus real world experiences being lackluster, a big production ramp up for online sales is probably not going to be worth it, as interest wanes and people rethink a $260 plastic watch with a crummy strap.
I'll probably invest in the 50th Anniversary Bulova Lunar Pilot. At least that's actually available.

Yep agree with everything you say , as most would I think .. I emailed Swatch about these , I think it took 3 weeks for a reply.. can't remember ... but by this time.. I'm bored of the idea ..
Swatch have dropped the ball , then shot themselves in the foot with this farce of a release ... what I think makes it worse , that I think one of the London A.D's just kept all the stock and sold them on Ebay .. and so are no longer available at that store... not certain about this... but was watching many on Ebay sold from London... and 43 sold 2 available ... doesn't really add up does it? !! this is from the same seller! so how did he get 45 watches if he didn't work at a A.D ?
Swatch have really screwed this up .. big time .. Omega will be embarrassed .. Rolex will be quietly laughing ...

I got the chance to see a Uranus in person and I must say it was better than expected. Yes, it’s plastic, but it has a unique ‘soft’ feel to it and the pushers are nice and clicky too. The piece is a lot of fun and not meant to be taken super seriously. I’m gonna wait as long as I have to to get my mission to mars at list price.
Edit: I looked at it side by side with a ‘real’ moon watch. Obviously it blew the swatch out of the water in terms of feel, but both were great pieces. Eventually, both will be in my collection.

Embarrassed owners? Not this one, I bought mine at added price on eBay and absolutely love it. It’s a very beautiful, light exquisite watch that I am ok with having paid triple the sale price, even more so if they actually end up a limited release lol. I have the Saturn one which is gorgeous and hope one day for a moon one, not because it looks like a speedmaster but because the line is the mission to the moon. I don’t think or lead people to believe it’s a really expensive watch, I just enjoy it being a beautiful, exquisite creation in its own right and it’s value to me is simple, I bought it, I love it, it’s worth it then, whatever I paid, like each of my watches in my small collection which I am so very grateful to have

I managed to get one, and I find it funny that people shit on it but at the same time they would buy it if it’s available. As for the owning experience, it’s like owning any other Swatch. It’s a fun watch to slap on wearing around and not take seriously. As for people’s reactions to it I have to say that no one cares what you have on your wrist unless they are watch fans themselves. If you want to get this watch as some kind of cheap speedy, just know 9/10 people don’t even know what a speedy is. And people who do like watches have most likely tried a speed master on at an omega boutique and will actually be more interested in the fact that it is a plastic watch.

Even if I had to join a stupid list and wait a year, I'd buy one for £200. It's a fun little homage to the Speedmaster and a really cool concept not yet really explored in watches... a toy version of the real thing, like buying a model car.
But with them only going to a few select boutiques, that just means the scalping will continue and people like me who are surrounded by water have to fly to somewhere else and have extreme luck to purchase? For a £200 plastic watch that isn't even a limited product? Fuck that. Easier to buy a Rolex.

It's alright, I wised up after the hustle and bustle of the launch and got a nice steel automatic (Seiko SARV001). A Japanese only sports automatic that they don't typically sell in the US for less than $200. After the reviews of owners of these Swatches, I think I made the right choice. That being said, I liked the marketing and that it brought interest into the industry. Wished for them they did more to keep it going, such a positive vibe at the time.

The only people I see talking about these watches are watch-enthusiasts, which isn't that weird, but I think it would be good for many to take a step back and look at what these watches can represent. I see so much hate towards these from my watch group (there's positive comments too, but there's ALOT of hate), so I decided to write this comment here, as this video was shared in the group:
These watches are a way for people without the resources to get an Omega Speedmaster to actually get something similar from the same brand. This is a good thing. Watch enthusiasm aren't only for the rich, it's for everyone. That aside for now, this collection's theme is the planets and the star in our solar system. The colors used to represent them fit perfectly for a balance of being correct and being sort of in-your-face. Furthermore, the different watches' pages on Swatch's site is named "Mission to __", which speaks to curiosity about the universe and more specifically our solar system. The bioceramic material used in these watches are commonly found in spacecrafts as a light and sturdy material, which it requires.
Now, back to the colors: I'm not going to write a lengthy text about what they say to me personally, but for those interested, I suggest researching about the planets and trying to tie what you find with the colors and you'll probably see why they are chosen.
What I interpret all these things to be is a friendly nudge to stop being so god damn busy with all the shallow stuff in this world and take a look up at the sky. To be curious again, like humans are, and to shed more light on what goes on in the world of science, more specifically spaceflight, outer space etc. At the same time, to start taking care of our fantastic planet (lots of stuff is happening within these fields fyi). These watches has a price tag that many more can afford and they send the strongest message I've ever seen from a watch. It might be a stretch, but I think they were supposed to be a help to bring the masses together towards science again.
I like watches for what they are as much as the next guy, but I have to say that this community can be extremely toxic for no reason what so ever. That is why I think people need to take a step back and look at the fuller picture, not only for these watches, but for everything in the world.

I love that they came out with these and I hope they become more available. That being said, every time I buy a watch well below my "normal" price range (which has changed over the years), I end up being disappointed. It's as you suggest, you think that a $200 watch is magically going to meet the expectation of something nicer but of course it never does.

I work within walking distance of one of the Swatch shops so made a habit of walking to check if they were in after work for a bit. The one time I got to the shop and they were in was both on a day I wasn't around for work and a fight broke out between some scalpers up the line so they closed the shop early. Kind of still want one but the whole fiasco has definitely made me more patient.

  • @wellwornwatch4232

Totally agree , I was super excited about the release and felt it was a great injection of fun energy into the watch world. The price point seemed like a game changer as far as an entry point into a luxury brand and getting new people into watch collecting. I absolutely love the Speedy, it's my grail watch, but is out of my price range and I was thrilled at the opportunity to have an actual Omega branded watch on my wrist, even a plastic one. But the lack of availability definitely soured me on the whole thing and I don't have plans to buy one now. In the end, Omega did succeed in piquing my interest in Omega watches and causing me to learn more about them (which maybe was their plan all along), but instead of buying new, I ended up scratching that Omega itch by spending the same amount I would have spent on a MoonSwatch on a modest 1970's quartz Seamaster. I love my new (old) Omega, but in the end, the money I spent did not help their bottom line.

Unfortunately the attitude of the staff at the store in my area don’t know how to deal with the masses. The vibe is don’t bother us, we don’t have the watches and don’t know when they will be here. Maybe a nice welcoming sign thanking our interest with a Q&A versus a piece of paper taped to the wall and display case in bold capitals… I get the sales staff are probably hourly and young but there should be an experienced manager to teach them. Also phone is straight to voicemail. Anyway just my observation.

Why do you want everything to be so affordable and obtainable? Sure I would not pay thousands for these plastic watches, but it makes it more fun to have something that actually wasn't so easy to obtain. Makes it a bit more special. Kinda like when I spent 2 years finding the perfect almost mint condition vintage and all original omega. It feels like I'm wearing something truly special, and the hunt for it makes it taste even better. Cheers, I really enjoy these videos.
