It would be interesting to see a cheaper alternative of the usual Swiss brands with a cheaper British brand alternative. Christopher Ward, CWC, Smiths, Vertex, Scurfa, Farer, Bremont, Pinion, Marloe and numerous others too many to mention. That would be a worthwhile video.
I own 3 Smiths watches - the Everest, the Silver Jubilee and the Commando. Superb watches, very well made, attractive and durable and an absolute bargain compared to an Explorer.
The jovial conversation between Mr Hands and The Other Fella is excellent as always, thanks for this one. That Smiths Everest is my personal favourite.
I'll have to go with Tom on this one because most, if not all, of his propositions are literally affordable options (or at least affordable for a much wider range of buyers), while the likes of Tudor, Longines etc. are already standard luxury or entry-level luxury choices. Besides, the Tissot PRX 35mm and Hamilton Khaki are like the exact (but cheaper) copies of their luxury counterparts LOL And just a bit of personal opinion, not responding to any particular models mentioned in the video, but I've been browsing through some affordable or high price-performance ratio brands, and I would whole heartedly endorse Mido and Certina. I own two Mido watches now and dare I say they have one of the best, if not the best, finishing, bracelet and functions for the four-digit or something USD price level. I haven't gotten my hand on any Certina for now (shame that they do not have authorized dealers in the USA), but judging from the website product page I'd say they are a bit below Mido in terms of design and finishing, but still packed a lot of value. I will try to get a Certina and see if it lives up to my expectations.
That Hamilton Pilot Pioneer was out long before Watches and Wonders. I'll point out that Hamilton has been in business since 1892, in the heyday of railroad watches. They supplied the navy and military during the war, they came up with some of the first electric watches, were involved in the first mechanical automatic chronograph development, and they sparked a revolution (albeit shorlived) with the Pulsar LED watch. My conservative guess is that they did not, in fact, copy Patek here. :)
Surprised not to see the Stowa Partitio on the list: a great watch for about £750 featuring *extremely* similar vibes to the Patek Philippe 5226G, with heritage to the 1920s to boot!
i didnt like the other guy on these podcast type vids for a while, now i really like what he brings to the table with his point of view, i feel like he found his voice and style :)
SEIKO, Tissot, Citizen, Smith's, and (grudgingly) Hamilton. The Pressage deserves a look and the Smith's is a sleeper fave. An alternative for the BB pro could be a Steinhart retro explorer.
Overall, Tom wins this as he has most watches that fits the bill. My thoughts on the watch choices and what I think are the closer/better budget alternatives: * Alternative to Rolex GMT Master LHD - Baltic Aquascaphe GMT Green (Tom wins) * Alternative to VC Historiques 222 - Tissot PRX80 35mm Gold PVD (Tom wins) * Alternative to Grand Seiko Kodo - Frederique Constant Slimline Monolithic Manufacture (Mr. Hands wins) * Alternative to Tudor Black Bay Pro - Neither wins. It should be the Christopher Ward C63 Sealander GMT Black (£970). * Alternative to PP Calatrava 5226G - Tom was close with his choice of Hamilton Aviation Pilot Pioneer. The closer alternative is the Seiko Prospex (Alpinist) SPB159J1 (£600). It has the black mottled dial, the cathedral hands, the date at 3'o'clock, and the 38mm size but only the hour numbers are fewer (even numbers only) and in a different orientation.
As soon as you mentioned the Grand Seiko Kodo, I immediately thought of the Citizen 0100. No, it's not a skeleton watch but who cares about pomp and circumstance when you've engineered a watch with + -1 second accuracy a year with 6 months of reserve power? The Citizen 0100 is brilliant. Great thinking, guys.
Dude you have to make this a normal theme on the channel. It's very interesting and fun way to get to know about watches. I have literally watched this video 6 times. Please make more of these.
I would also add the Victorinox Inox Mechanical as a cheaper alternative to the Girard Perregaux Laureato 42mm. A reliable automatic movement [a Selita SW200-2 in the case (excuse the pun) of the Victorinox]? Check, a hexagonal bezel that is close enough to the octagonal GP's bezel that you'd miss the difference if you weren't looking closely? Check, A waffle design dial? Check. All for a 1/20th of the cost of the GP - I have one as a daily alternative to my Tudor North Flag and it's just as accurate as the Tudor - the Victorinox is 3 to 4 seconds fast per day (which is easier to adjust, just stop the second hand for the required amount of time to reset the time) compared to the Tudor which is 3 to 4 seconds slow per day which is more of a faff to reset the time (stop the second hand and advance the time before starting again)

Great video and great selection of affordable alternatives! Love the gold Tissot PRX, hoping Tissot come out with an all-gold Gentleman’s at some point in the future! Another alternative for the Tudor Black Bay Pro that I’ve been eyeing is the Christopher Ward C63 Seamaster GMT. Similar design language to the Tudor and the Rolex Explorer II for $1,000
Really enjoyable & informative episode! It's good to know that they're are some excellent quality & value watches out there that are comparable with the far more expensive brands. I'd say that Tom edged this very close contest...the Tissot got him over the line first in my view!
I do understand and know that my choice would be frowned upon, but I really love hommage watches, they give you the looks and are generally a crazy bargain , I would take a San martin or pagani design for the rolex and Tudor . It’s my opinion, I do respect all other opinions
Same here, I'd put the san martin sn021g over the smiths everest all day, as someone that owns both, but that's just me. I sat up til 1am here in Tasmania but it was worth it at the first try...I got that very watch. Others have made multiple attempts with no luck. It's a mad way to do business, but perhaps better than those they homage.
Have been trying to buy a Smiths for eons, but being old and stupid I am to slow and confused to follow the buying procedure and have always run out of the allotted time allowed to purchase a Smiths. Maybe they might allow me a little more time?
I really want to like the Smiths but I just can't get over the fact that the owner of the brand has been known yo doxx people who dare to ask for a repair under warranty and in a few cases has just refused to send repaired watches back. The way he sells watches also seems dodgy. I was lucky enough to get my hands on one before they really took off but the whole experience dealing with the owner soured me on the whole thing.
My score card has Rnds 1 and 2 to Tom, Rnds 3 and 4 to Andrew and both those watches jumped to my mind for round 5 but the Hamilton takes it by a whisker for me
Great starter watches to get some feel of their luxury alternatives. Or just great watches for people who are not so deep into watches like us. Personally these great alternative affordable options will set me back from getting my higher end luxury grails. I need to maintain for a vintage Submariner, A Lange 1815 or Day Date Rolex.
GMT: 1:0 for Tom VC222: 2:0 for Tom GS Kodo: 2:1 for Watchfinder, and Yes to the reason why for Germany 😉 Black Bay: 2:2 for Watchfinder PP: 3:2 for Tom🙌🏼
I'll go with Tom on the Baltic and Tissot and with Andrew on the Frederique Constant and Smiths. I consider the Hamilton and Longines to be a draw, so the overall result for me is a draw. I would definitely like to see more of these contests. They're FUN!
A good alternative for the Black Bay Pro I think would be a Chris Ward Sealander GMT. Looks even better than the Explorer that it's replicating in my opinion. And cheap, cheap, cheap.
@@ajyeoh I would agree/disagree with 1 caveat, if you don't travel to different timezones very much but do need to track a second timezone the quick set date is more useful than the true gmt function.
Ive had a Tissot prx for a while now and wear it almost everyday. Sadly I still have yet to run into someone else who knows Tissot and recognizes the prx.
The Oris is nothing like the Tudor GMT, you well have chosen a Vintage Timex. Steinhart make the perfect alternative. Yema Flygraf would be a good alternative to the Calatrava
I love the Smiths Everest Gilt Dial. It's beautiful. The problem with Smiths is that they're so difficult to actually buy. They're online shop only opens for literally minutes every few months or so. And, good luck actually buying anything from them at all! I'd love to get one, but good luck!
19:57 That's the same Smiths who made speedometers, rev counters etc for Aston Martin, Jaguar, Jensen etc back in the day, look at any DB5 or E-Type dashboard. Great history.
Tom's picks for me with a some of caveats. 1. Citizen will take a bit of time to make these available to most of the world. The Eco Drive One has only just turned up in the UK and in only one version. 2. Much as I like Tissot, I'm not sure I want a watch with Pr*cks on the dial. 3. The Hamilton is too big, the Longines wins that one.
My bargain watch purchases this year In 22’ have been my Tissot powermatic 516 and the Sturhling Depthmaster Hertiage both Swiss automatic movements and both purchased $ $256 for Tissot and $275 for Sturhling which is an obvious Rolex Homage. Love them both for their great look and finishing and not raising any eyebrows at home😂😂😂
For that Patek I'd consider the Zodiac Olympos LE Military dial. 40mm no date but a similar textured dial and arabics. I love mine and it's COSC for sub 1k 👍🏻
The Ball Roadmaster GMT Day-Date Black/Green colorway should have been the perfect pick for the GMT lefty alternative, Ball called that colorway ahead of Rolex, and it has an awesome GMT and Day-date function that nobody else has done haha!
The best modern equivalent of an early explorer is the Addiesdive AD2123-2. It is a beautiful watch with a perfectly sized case and has the benefit of a mecaquartz movent for stunning accuracy and robustness. All for £70 ! If you insist on having the inaccuracy of an auto movement then the AD2112 which also gives you the later applied indices. Addiesdive and Watch Dives can also offer various Tudor BB homages, again with quartz movements.
I say this is a tie! You both had great choices for all budgets, some watches for those who have little spare cash on hand, to those who are still low income, but good with their money. Great choices al around. 👍✌
What a wonderful show/program idea and It is a draw! I can't either find any substitute for Tudor BB pro, it is so hard and one might even argue for the Seiko Sharp edge GMT as a contender there. Longines Spirit to battle the Patek problem, would be my solution. And Spirit Zulu Time would work as an option to BB Pro!
For the Black Bay Pro I would suggest the Christopher Ward C63 Sealander GMT. Clearly inspired by the Explorer 2 without being an homage, especially the blue variant. Really good value and a nice bracelet with on the fly adjust.

Tom smashed it , especially on total price ,
My score card has Rnds 1 and 2 to Tom, Rnds 3 and 4 to Andrew and both those watches jumped to my mind for round 5 but the Hamilton takes it by a whisker for me
Great starter watches to get some feel of their luxury alternatives. Or just great watches for people who are not so deep into watches like us. Personally these great alternative affordable options will set me back from getting my higher end luxury grails. I need to maintain for a vintage Submariner, A Lange 1815 or Day Date Rolex.
GMT: 1:0 for Tom
VC222: 2:0 for Tom
GS Kodo: 2:1 for Watchfinder, and Yes to the reason why for Germany 😉
Black Bay: 2:2 for Watchfinder
PP: 3:2 for Tom🙌🏼
I'll go with Tom on the Baltic and Tissot and with Andrew on the Frederique Constant and Smiths. I consider the Hamilton and Longines to be a draw, so the overall result for me is a draw.
I would definitely like to see more of these contests. They're FUN!
Same, except I consider the Hamilton a win and the win goes to Tom
@@ShirtlessRabbit4 I prefer the Hamilton's looks too, but that 43.5mm case size is just too much.
@@frankpentangeli7945 I mean I unpopularly like larger watches (and smaller watches too), so it's a non issue for me
I think the washi paper dial is amazing. the Victorinox Infantry GMT looks like the Tudor GMT
I have the non-GMT sharp edge Seiko and it's just amazing. Stunning watches for sure.
At 8:32 did someone fart in the microphone?
I see the metal bezel on the Tudor and I think that's a Vostok if I've ever seen one!
The Victorinox Alliance mechanical is a great match in texture to the Patek. Only $625.
A good alternative for the Black Bay Pro I think would be a Chris Ward Sealander GMT. Looks even better than the Explorer that it's replicating in my opinion. And cheap, cheap, cheap.
@@ajyeoh Ok.
@@ajyeoh Thats watch snobbery at it's finest right there...
@@benjoyce5449 🤣🤣🤣🤣 so true!
@@ajyeoh I understand you point, but the way you expressed it sounded like snobbery. I use a G-Shock to tack my two different timezones so...🤷🏽♂️
@@ajyeoh I would agree/disagree with 1 caveat, if you don't travel to different timezones very much but do need to track a second timezone the quick set date is more useful than the true gmt function.
Ive had a Tissot prx for a while now and wear it almost everyday. Sadly I still have yet to run into someone else who knows Tissot and recognizes the prx.
Tudor GMT - Steinhart. Patek Calatrava - Axios Pathefinder Easy 👍
TF does not open every two months, but every two weeks. You have to do something to get one. So what?
19:57 That's the same Smiths who made speedometers, rev counters etc for Aston Martin, Jaguar, Jensen etc back in the day, look at any DB5 or E-Type dashboard. Great history.
Same name, totally different company. Time Factors from Sheffield. The watches do look good though.
Smiths! the brand in my Land Rover Defender!! when you mentioned this brand, I fell down the stairs, and my shoes fell off (both of them)!
For that Patek I'd consider the Zodiac Olympos LE Military dial. 40mm no date but a similar textured dial and arabics. I love mine and it's COSC for sub 1k 👍🏻
Tom wins for the Baltic, Tissot, and Hamilton choices🤙🏽
The Ball Roadmaster GMT Day-Date Black/Green colorway should have been the perfect pick for the GMT lefty alternative, Ball called that colorway ahead of Rolex, and it has an awesome GMT and Day-date function that nobody else has done haha!
I have a ball engineer 3 marvel light it's my Rolex Milgaus that Is out of my price range. Engineer 3 has great stats like the milgaus
Very enjoyable vid guys. Made me chuckle and souns choices whichever way you jump
Some of the micro brands are very interesting. I love to wear my Eza Sealander in bleu. The new Oris watches like the 65 are a perfect choice.
The Christopher Ward C63 GMT is the obvious choice for the Explorer II. Great video as always!
There's in Longines Zulu time you guys missed as for GMT alternative I'd say ... Whole new spirit collection would be nice to see in your review !!
I don’t understand why you didn’t mention the Christopher Ward C63 Sealander GMT, which is clearly a most brilliant alternative to the Tudor!
I say this is a tie! You both had great choices for all budgets, some watches for those who have little spare cash on hand, to those who are still low income, but good with their money. Great choices al around. 👍✌
Don't advertise those Citizen watches, I'm trying to save up for one
“Whar y’all noodles at?” “Wail?” “Serve us som good noodles.Austin is a longways away Pard! “ 🤠🤠😵💫
The PRX gold 35mm where can I buy it?
The new Smiths cost as much as refurbishing my original, which I bought new to go to college.
I would absolutely kill for a standard Tissot PRX in 35mm with Powermatic 80
