"From the final night of the Dylan & the Dead Tour, this wonderful Terrapin Station shows that after a long tour that started at Alpine exactly a month earlier, the Dead could always rise to the occasion of a stadium filled with hungry Dead Heads, this one in Orange County. Great vibe always at a summer Dead show, Thanks Dave!
Hi Dave, just wanted to know about the GratefulDeadPodcast that we had gotten accustomed to expect on Thursdays. Is it me or haven't there been any podcasts of late. RIP Robert Hunter.... Love his lyrics.... 'The storyteller makes no choice. Soon you will not hear his voice. His job is to shed light. And not to master'
I got a chill just reading your comment. I saw Robert Hunter In Boston s few years before He passed. I was lucky. Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there. 🙏God Bless Robert Hunter.
Man this one always gets me, there's a sense of finality about this tune that always hits deep. Can hardly make it through without shedding a tear. Anybody else?
Same. As I get older, it only resonates more and deeper. Joy, loss, the inability to really know anything...it's all in here for me. The prayer for inspiration is one of the purest lyrics I can think of. The fervent hope that something can hold away despair -- I'm tearing up just thinking about what those words have meant to me.
The shot of the little baby with ear plugs in touched my heart. As a dad of 4 kids, all of whom love, appreciate and write music and poetry, it was one of my great pleasures to introduce my kids to The Dead. It still is one of my great joys to listen with them and watch them close their eyes, open their hearts and get lost in the music together. That's what it's all about.
I heard Terrapin for the first time in 1991, i was a sophomore in high school, and it completely BLEW my mind. Started my almost 30 year love affair with the Dead and remains my first love 😻😻🔥🔥
We might be the same age. I graduated High School in '93 and I first heard the dead in '89-'90 I first heard this song in particular on TV. PBS aired Ticket to New Years Eve and Terrapin REALLY struck me. I went out the next day and bought a copy of Terrapin Station on Cassette tape. I wore that tape out!
Graduated in ‘95. Saw the Dead April ‘94 in Orlando. It was supposed to be 2 consecutive shows but Bill Kruetzmann’s father had a heart attack (fortunately, he survived) so they made it 1. I heard police used tear gas outside on the crowd that night but I was already inside. Also got the chance to see them April ‘95 Tampa Stadium four months before Jerry died. Met the love of my life at that show, but he died 8 mos later of a heart attack. Worked for a while and then in 1996, I went on the first Furthur festival all around the country. That was amazing, but also kind of a blur. College after that. Good memories mixed with sad ones because I never really got over the death of my first love. And culturally, it’s seems like a different world now, everyone so divided in this era of trump.
Oh what I'd give to be back on tour, back in the good old days with the Good Old Grateful Dead. Grateful for so many surreal memories and those amazing trips!
A man with a total lack of ego, content with making pleasing music the object of love and admiration, bordering on fanaticism. Knowing he was the main reason for the groups success. I truly believe it just wore him down. He's a big reason I know there is a God in heaven.
The nearest clapping hands visible at 0:01-0:09 are mine. Being tall (6'8") I didn't want to block others' view, so I stood in front of the tapers' tables which had about 15 raised stereo microphones. This show (my first) literally changed the rest of my life, because two hours earlier, I had purchased a sheet (50 hits) of LSD in the parking lot. Walked into the stadium as the P.A. speakers began playing Sergeant Pepper, and I remember "Lovely Rita" and "Getting Better" sounding other-worldly. Phil's bass had a great effect on me, and when I watched Mickey drum, his sticks seemed to bounce suddenly back from the skins, as if he were playing backwards. The giant monochrome display (upper left of the stage, not visible in this video) magnified each band member, and about halfway through the concert, that display started rendering effects similar those toward the end of this video. This concert was a spiritual experience for me, and changed how I see the world.
I was there too, and you catch a brief glimpse of me and a better glimpse of my friend in the very beginning of the show, in the Iko Iko video! Best concert I ever went to, by far!
I was at this gig, Angels Stadium, with my then girlfriend April Wyld. It was a special joyfull day, one of those magic moments that you remember for life.
The thing about The Grateful Dead is that (to me) they are trying to figure out their instruments on stage. Suddenly the door is opened .. and there is a girl standing there!
Every note does count, it still counts. It was always about the music. That’s why we still love it today, all these many years later.

A Dead show. The greatest party in the galaxy. Creatures from all over the universe flying in to catch the dead. They ain’t crazy they know this is the best party around. No, you think you have partied before until you’ve been to a dead show. Even the parking lot is a stone gas! Always good to see Jerry on stage playing again. The most powerful band of all time!
So many textures and paths this song takes, Mickey kills me with his spontaneity and creativeness, not obtrusively directing the changes. great sound from the drums on this one, as well as Bob's guitar, always subtle and supporting. Thanks for the upload. RIP RH.
I now realize this had to be the best Terrapin I saw live. Well played, tight, and powerful. I remember that there was no traditional break between set 1 and 2. Just one long set before they took a break and then came out with Dylan.
This song pulls all the emotions out! From the worst to the best of times, it's all packed in a moving song. I love how Grateful Dead songs feel different as I grow up.
How could someone write a song like this? YOW! Alchemy! Pencil lead turned to gold! Eternally thankful to have witnessed the transformational power of this band! Hallelujah

I went to maybe 10 of the "Dylan and the Dead" shows that summer, including this one. Brent was ON FIRE through the whole tour. I don't think I ever saw him better. So many great memories. RIP Brent, Jerry, and Phil.

Thanks for posting!!
The hight of my Deadheadism! 1987 was an incredible year. So glad to have Jerry back. And so sad he's gone.
My favourite song of all time. Even with weak Jerry's voice at the time, still fantastic and so poignant.
Great version ☺
Another one moves on, RIP Phil
It’s truly the end of an era. Even knowing how old they are, I was still surprised to hear he died. And then just cried.
'87 baby !!!!!!!!......a lifetime ago 💜

One of my favorite Dead songs.

I love the 87 Terrapin- especially 3/24/87 Hampton one. But w video? Sweeeet! Ty!

Love '87 Dead. Back to basics, tight and in your face.
