"From the final night of the Dylan & the Dead Tour, this wonderful Terrapin Station shows that after a long tour that started at Alpine exactly a month earlier, the Dead could always rise to the occasion of a stadium filled with hungry Dead Heads, this one in Orange County. Spending a day with Disney, Dylan and the Dead sounds pretty darn great." - David Lemieux
I was there and remember a hot summer;s day with an amazing Shakedown Street in the Angels parking lot. Police were surprised at the Dead community, but once the music started Jerry and Co. were in top form. I believe Dylan's set was okay, rather unspectacular, I was hoping for some "Dead magic" as they were together but not much stood out from his input. Great vibe always at a summer Dead show, Thanks Dave!
Hi Dave, just wanted to know about the GratefulDeadPodcast that we had gotten accustomed to expect on Thursdays. Is it me or haven't there been any podcasts of late. It's a really really wonderfully put together program and I really really 💜🎶 it..... Just wanted to mention in particular that just so good specially designed for Mr.Mckernan episode.Lots of stuff we learned about Pigpen that was just so cool. AND what I appreciated was there no mention of much,if not any at all of his love life🔼 Ms.Joplin... I thought it was admirable & classy to not even dedicate one sentence to that topic that I & most of your listeners probably expected... hope to be on lookout for next podcast. Maybe tomorrow⁉️. Happy New Year Everyone ❗
Man this one always gets me, there's a sense of finality about this tune that always hits deep. Can hardly make it through without shedding a tear. Anybody else?
Same. As I get older, it only resonates more and deeper. Joy, loss, the inability to really know anything...it's all in here for me. The prayer for inspiration is one of the purest lyrics I can think of. The fervent hope that something can hold away despair -- I'm tearing up just thinking about what those words have meant to me.
RIP Robert Hunter.... Love his lyrics.... 'The storyteller makes no choice. Soon you will not hear his voice. His job is to shed light. And not to master'
I got a chill just reading your comment. I saw Robert Hunter In Boston s few years before He passed. I was lucky. Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there. 🙏God Bless Robert Hunter.
The nearest clapping hands visible at 0:01-0:09 are mine. Being tall (6'8") I didn't want to block others' view, so I stood in front of the tapers' tables which had about 15 raised stereo microphones. This show (my first) literally changed the rest of my life, because two hours earlier, I had purchased a sheet (50 hits) of LSD in the parking lot. Walked into the stadium as the P.A. speakers began playing Sergeant Pepper, and I remember "Lovely Rita" and "Getting Better" sounding other-worldly. Phil's bass had a great effect on me, and when I watched Mickey drum, his sticks seemed to bounce suddenly back from the skins, as if he were playing backwards. The giant monochrome display (upper left of the stage, not visible in this video) magnified each band member, and about halfway through the concert, that display started rendering effects similar those toward the end of this video. This concert was a spiritual experience for me, and changed how I see the world.
I was there too, and you catch a brief glimpse of me and a better glimpse of my friend in the very beginning of the show, in the Iko Iko video! Best concert I ever went to, by far!
The shot of the little baby with ear plugs in touched my heart. As a dad of 4 kids, all of whom love, appreciate and write music and poetry, it was one of my great pleasures to introduce my kids to The Dead. It still is one of my great joys to listen with them and watch them close their eyes, open their hearts and get lost in the music together. That's what it's all about.
A man with a total lack of ego, content with making pleasing music the object of love and admiration, bordering on fanaticism. Knowing he was the main reason for the groups success. I truly believe it just wore him down. He's a big reason I know there is a God in heaven.
I heard Terrapin for the first time in 1991, i was a sophomore in high school, and it completely BLEW my mind. Started my almost 30 year love affair with the Dead and remains my first love 😻😻🔥🔥
We might be the same age. I graduated High School in '93 and I first heard the dead in '89-'90 I first heard this song in particular on TV. PBS aired Ticket to New Years Eve and Terrapin REALLY struck me. I went out the next day and bought a copy of Terrapin Station on Cassette tape. I wore that tape out!
Graduated in ‘95. Saw the Dead April ‘94 in Orlando. It was supposed to be 2 consecutive shows but Bill Kruetzmann’s father had a heart attack (fortunately, he survived) so they made it 1. I heard police used tear gas outside on the crowd that night but I was already inside. Also got the chance to see them April ‘95 Tampa Stadium four months before Jerry died. Met the love of my life at that show, but he died 8 mos later of a heart attack. Worked for a while and then in 1996, I went on the first Furthur festival all around the country. That was amazing, but also kind of a blur. College after that. Good memories mixed with sad ones because I never really got over the death of my first love. And culturally, it’s seems like a different world now, everyone so divided in this era of trump.
Oh what I'd give to be back on tour, back in the good old days with the Good Old Grateful Dead. Grateful for so many surreal memories and those amazing trips!
The thing about The Grateful Dead is that (to me) they are trying to figure out their instruments on stage. Suddenly the door is opened .. and there is a girl standing there!
So many textures and paths this song takes, Mickey kills me with his spontaneity and creativeness, not obtrusively directing the changes. great sound from the drums on this one, as well as Bob's guitar, always subtle and supporting. Thanks for the upload. RIP RH.
I went to maybe 10 of the "Dylan and the Dead" shows that summer, including this one. Brent was ON FIRE through the whole tour. I don't think I ever saw him better. So many great memories. RIP Brent, Jerry, and Phil.
I now realize this had to be the best Terrapin I saw live. Well played, tight, and powerful. I remember that there was no traditional break between set 1 and 2. Just one long set before they took a break and then came out with Dylan.
This song pulls all the emotions out! From the worst to the best of times, it's all packed in a moving song. I love how Grateful Dead songs feel different as I grow up.
Midland is playing such beautiful fills, they pass by unless you really listen. He was easily able to color the sound; quite an understated keyboard player

I was a junior in high school and lived about 15 mins from this place. I remember all of us kids were like let's go to the parking lot and find "weed" haha so naive, if only I had gone in. Oh well, college settled all that soon after. Dead music will always be about my best of times. Always.
I really would like to know where the baby is? A Dead Head? A lawyer? Maybe playing music! With time moving on. I hope the world understands how special this music is. RIP Robert Hunter. Thank You!
Doug Potosky, Baby is Lesh’s son - that is his wife Jill Lesh holding said baby who is now a man haha. He makes music I believe. Plays with Phil at Terrapin Crossroads
One of their best compositions, too bad they never played all three parts (Lady with a Fan, Terrapin Station, and At a Siding) of the suite live as they did on record - also with a chorus
@@kevinr.3542 technically yes, but only instrumental at a siding, no lyrics, and no terrapin flyer. would have been amazing for them to do that section with Marsalis in 1990
The story teller makes no choice & soon U will not hear his voice, his job is to shed light, Not to master. Like ripples in still water, where there's no pebbles tossed & no wind to blow. Those who lead are those that follow... illumination comes from deep within: within U without U.
Hey Brother- I dont recall if its from The Other One or Long Strange Trip, but when The Dead are approached on Hunters Lyrics they all say the same thing. He'll never reveal the so called meaning of his lyrics. And when Hunter is finally approached he recites a couple Versus word for word and than says "What's not to understand...". Its said by revealing the nature leaves nothing left to the observer. Cheers!

One of my favorite Dead songs.
Ck out terrapin from Alpine 87!!!! I still remember it rocked!!!
What a grateful day this was!
Well I don’t watch videos that often and I just figured out y… I’m such a mush… I cried like a baby as soon as the video started and the boys were all there. Jerry Brent I get so emotional it’s a happy emotional. My body Physiologically reacts with such emotion… and it was so emotional seeing Jerry and I guess I just miss being “‘home”‘so much !!! Thanks for posting!!
Thank You!
Doug Potosky,
Baby is Lesh’s son - that is his wife Jill Lesh holding said baby who is now a man haha. He makes music I believe. Plays with Phil at Terrapin Crossroads
This is what has helped, not a sports car, a new woman, vices….. the importance of living a real life. Love
...from my 1st show ...
Every song is Awesome to me.
That opening stage view. What a perspective!
I will not forgive you if you will not take the chance. love it
she's kind of a b*tch tho. I mean damn, get your own fan!
It’s in reference to a classic poem...look for it and you will be blown away when you find it!
@@tomlund4951 I give up. . . what's the answer to the test?
So much love
One of their best compositions, too bad they never played all three parts (Lady with a Fan, Terrapin Station, and At a Siding) of the suite live as they did on record - also with a chorus
I think they did the extended Terrapin suite one time live, didn't they?
@@kevinr.3542 technically yes, but only instrumental at a siding, no lyrics, and no terrapin flyer. would have been amazing for them to do that section with Marsalis in 1990
Has anyone ever written an analysis about what this song means, or why on earth it has such a deep connection to such as myself?
Someone saw the light while in the dog eat dog, or terrapin eat terrapin world... In the shadow of the moon, something deeper stirs.
Cheers!
@@Karmakatt6 Thank you! You're right-I see there are reams of commentary strewn around the interwebs. I guess i might have trouble with feelings that are meant for me alone-that seems to be the revealing science of this song.
@@TonyMacFarlane It's my pleasure! Im only passing along the message. Check out those Documentaries if you haven't seen them. Plus the Classic Album Series on the Dead (Elton John and The Band are also fantastic), and Grateful Dawg. Be well!!
Watching your vibes rippling water for free. Can we play forever
There are only about 15 or 20 Dead songs I enjoy, but like this one, those songs are really good.
Wow, such a difficult track to play live! Hats off!
What the world needs is more Jerry energy, don't forget to love
Saw station live twice what a jam Jerry can rock man.❤
My all time version of this song
Great song. I've always wondered how they might play this live, as there is a lot on the record that would be hard to duplicate live.
