I was there. This man gave us everything. He did not play concerts, he played life. No words for how fortunate we were to receive his gifts.
Can I please go back to 1983 when life was beautiful?
It was more beautiful in the 60s 70s ya missed out sorry but your soul is real...cs
How old are you?
It was good mate but 1973 was even better. Kind Regards
Geoff
It’s difficult for those of us who know what the live experience was like to explain the sense of loss, and simultaneous joy of a moment like this. It will never be the same again, and maybe it shouldn’t. But damn it was good while it lasted.
Are you speaking about the emotion felt in the moment at the show or did something tragic happen around this time?
@@prestonx4172 he's talking about the magic of listening to Jerry live and in person..... he was special..... one of a kind! And he was gifted with the beautiful eloquent ability to show us his heart through sound...... it's a rare gift he had.
Completely understand
Going to a yearly pilgramage to Eugene, OR was going to 'church' for me. Heaven on Earth with all my friends and the best music/sound/party ever !!!! Heaven!!
You said it man.
I don't care if he forgets some of the words, I see the tears in his eyes, and listen to his astonishing guitar ..... and I know nobody played this song like Jerry Garcia. Rest in song, Jerry.
I saw a very similar version of the song on 9/18/82 Boston Garden as the encore - truly changed my life !
Some things in life you never forget - very fortunate to have this memory !!
Don't be sad that the good old days are gone... Be glad that you got to live in them ... 💓
How many people saw Jerry sings this it's God from above
Always loves their twist on this song. The keyboards in the background just carry it through like a beautiful rain
Well said🙏🏼
we never met, but I miss you Brent! Thank you for the music/medicine. Saved me a few times. Take me home, and then just let your love out, don't trap it in.. just let it Blow Away! You taught me that. Those few times Jerry contacted the spirit realm at the start of a show with a few riffs of Blow Away, you can still feel Brent and his unending love in the air! Cheers to all the family! Not fade away!
I am a huge Dylan fan and think the dead have this one like Jimi has Watchtower or the Band have When I Paint my Masterpiece. It feels like he wrote those songs for them.
Thanks Chuck… appreciate the super insight!!!
He turned a Dylan classic into a Garcia Classic - an emotional rendition.
“There’s no way to measure his greatness or magnitude as a person or as a player. He really had no equal. His playing was moody, awesome, sophisticated, hypnotic, and subtle. There’s no way to convey the loss.”
[Bob Dylan]
“I quit washing dishes for a living when I saw Jerry Garcia and the rest of the band pull up to the club where I worked in limousines. Right then I thought, 'I can do that.' ”
[Carlos Santana]
I keep coming back to this performance.
It grooves in the perfect way to invoke happiness and sorrow. The tone of the guitar and keyboards. Jerry and Brent’s improv on fire. Jaw dropping. I haven’t listened to many covers of Baby Blue, but don’t think I need to to say this is probably the best!
Try 12-03-81 for anothe really good one.
Definitely the best. Even though jerry flubs the words a couple times. Honestly that just makes it better.
The Chris Robinson Brotherhood and Them (with Van Morrison on vocal) along with this one, are my favorite covers. Each is vastly different than the other. Which goes to show what an amazing song it is. Thanks Bob 😊✌️.
Try the Elevators. I've listened to a lot. My fav.
Bonnie Raitt does a top notch version. It's almost like Dylan wrote it for her vocals. Sort of like Hendrix took Dylan's All Along The Watchtower and made it his own.

Ohhhhh what a gift we were given from this great man and his guitar. There will never be another Jerry Garcia.
But the music will never stop.
I can’t get over how good this guitar solo is
There are hundreds of thousands of his solos.
You can tell he’s thinking fast, but playing slow
Every single second of that solo drips with clarity and feeling.
@@jessesnyder5426 but this one is special
Poor Jerry. Love him forever. He became so popular that he kind of lost himself. He became realer than life for so many. It got so that Jerry could no longer go out. His fans would swarm him and go insane. Jerry coped and escaped his reality with heroin. In this video, he was doped up. Imagine how he played off the dope.
Me personally, I was never able to say goodbye to Jerry and I guess I never will. It is too painful.
One of my favorite songs performed by one of my favorite bands. God blessed The Grateful Dead forever and ever.
“A broken angel sings from a guitar “
Jerry Garcia Forever
{💔}:=}
Beautiful version-haunting. Inspiring. An ending and beginning.
You can tell Garcia was riding addiction at this stage. RIP Jerry and Brent.
He was 41 years old at the time of this concert. Hard to believe.
One legend covering another.
Right
I love his guitar tone! This is a great version of this song!
none better.
Sono d'accordo,brava.
Seldom Scene does an incredible version too
The melodic movement between tension, resolution and harmony between Garcia and Mydland is absolutely gorgeous. I’m not sure any rock band, ever, could match the Grateful Dead when Jerry and Brent were locked in.
Nothing sounds as magical as Jerry’s guitar!
Prince's.

And this was when he was deep into his heroin addiction. If only he'd never used that killer drug. He might still be alive today. The more he could have done!
This is one of the best performances that I’ve seen. Jer is dialed in so well this night…
This one gets me through the rough days.
Which rough?
As all Dead does.
me too
Hi Cody
Great comment bro.
Somehow we keep going.
Love from Cork, Ireland
why are they rough?
This will be played at my funeral..
ending with a jam into We bid you goodnight. Damn good stuff
One of the best songs of all time.
Lyrics continue to speak to us in today’s world.
Lots of mutual respect between Dylan and the Dead (and of course some cool shows together). Bob must be happy with some of their covers. This one, and Garcia's "Tangled Up in Blue" are standouts. I live in SF Bay area 1979-85 and was a BGP usher the whole time, saw countless Dead shows at the Warfield, Civic Center, Oakland auditorium and of course the Greek Theater (across the street from my grand program building :-)). Also lived walking distance to the Keystone in Berkeley, so lots and lots of JGB, wonderful times, wonderful music.
Lucky you
I was in the City during the same period. I had been to Dead shows in Colorado in my 70s youth - Folsom Field, Denver Stadium and magically at Red Rocks but there was something about them in their native habitat so to speak. A great friend lived near Lake Merritt and we used to go to their New Years concerts. I also went to Keystone fairly often so our paths probably crossed. Great days.
I was a volunteer with the Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic from 1977 to 1990. I was at this show and many others, including the closing of Winterland in 1979. We must have stood near each other at some point watching the band. We loved the Dead shows because the crowd was always mellow with few exceptions.
I know that Bob Dylan spoke feelingly about Jerry Garcia's death, called it a great loss. He had so much respect for him.
You Win !
Me ! I understand..I 83 & got it right from the start...all my social group did too. The range is phenomenal & the grasp of human behaviour too.
love the country and western sound
"Jerry is gone in one form, but like the magician that he is, he has explosively been transformed into a million Jerrys-one improvising in each of our hearts." - Ram Dass
"Music is God's gift to man, the only art of Heaven given to earth, the only art of earth we take to Heaven." Walter Savage Landor
Keep on jammin' to what moves your soul!
Just pure emotion. So raw. When signer becomes the song. My favorite version that I come back to.
Grateful Dead LIVE IN FRANKFURT/Germany 1972 🎸🎸✳️✳️🔝🔝🎊🎊🎆🎆😃😃 Great Concert..🎉🎉
Nobody even comes close to covering Dylan better than Jerry and the Dead.
I'd listen to a Hendrix "All Along the Watchtower" from 1970 like Atlanta 7/4/70 or Isle of Wight 8/30/70 and re-assess that statement but overall, i absolutely agree with you.
Not even Dylan Himself. I find my self listening to Jerry playing Dylan songs a lot more than actual Dylan songs.
Except Bryan Ferry.
@@IgnatiusChinaski Absolutely. Van Morrison and Them did do a stunning version of this song too.
Really?? Check out Eric Burtons version!!!!😊
Cosmic sparks. Chocolate for my ears. So very blessed musicians . Thanky very much ⚠️
It blows my mind I was negative -3 years old when this was performed. To me it feels like it was written yesterday. The soul of this song I'd undeniable. Dont think it matters if its Jerry or Dylan.
Love the grateful dead band wasnt aware that Jerry Garcia had passed Rip
This tugs at my hearts try and brings tears of joy
Just Glad that I was able to listen to this man play
Just got over Covid and feeling well I was feeling blue.....it's all over now
Forget about the dead, they will not follow you... I'm glad you're healthy now.

That sound at the end... like someone ran their guitar into a mic stand or something.
Great song, great video.
Love ❤ this song. ❤ Greatful Dead
Bobby's backing vocals are always PERFECT!!! ❤️
Ich werde euch immer bewundern mit eure Musik.
Miss, miss, miss Jerry Garcia
Great band covering a great song. What else can you ask for?
I was in SF on August 9, 1995 when Jerry Garcia passed away. A very sad day in the Haight. The Dead live on forever. There were many tributes and memorials. Flowers were left at the Victorian house where the Grateful Dead had lived on Ashbury Street. At the corner of Haight and Ashbury at a telephone pole were more flowers and candles burning and messages to and about Jerry. Also at Ben & Jerry's store near the pole, they announced their newest flavor, "Cherry Garcia."
IWT. Miss you Jerry Bear.
Beautiful.
Beautiful…fly high Jerry 🕊️
How many people in the world actually understand the magnitude of what Dylan did to the music industry.
I think most people repeat themselfs saying Dylan cant Sing, ifeel pitty for them
Lyrically yes. Musically absolutely Jack shit.
Probably just you
Well, the Nobel Committee thought so.
The best.. England has us beat in most things rock and roll.. but we got dylan.. unquestionable undeniable
Always LOVED this one!!
jerry and all the Band: you did it, what ever i meant and what ever it meant! There is no moment as here now to be listened and do. You did it. Thank you
Dead and Co. Just played this at the Las Vegas Sphere.
looks the worse from wear and tear...yet plays it like an angel !
Well..I do! At 83 ...am.totally besotted by his talent..he.revolutinsed music
WOW!! I reckon the version puts a new lick on this amazing Dylan classic, dare I say it , definately my favourite version👍✌️
Eyes closed still shooting fire from that axe.
The tone of that guitar is such 🔥🔥🔥 ☝☝☝
Maybe every day should be Jerry Garcia day, it'd be a nicer world
Non doveva lasciarci, soffriremo for ever
Incredible how is able to pull off, whole nother level!
Suck for drugs, or not? What a chilling sound.... sittin' under the stars, 50 y old, wine,.... but the soul of this.... who will bring this on stage again?
Beautiful
I love piano too
There are many different versions of this song from a wide variety of artists and though this version may not have the best vocals the guitar playing is outstanding and so much better than any other I have heard.
DAMN fine version boys
Pentatonic masterpiece!
Wow. Just wow. Nice close up of Jer singing...
This a great show.
Such a sweet guitar....
I know next to nothing about the Grateful Dead but this is as good a cover of this song as I've ever heard
They are certainly not everyone's cup of tea but there is no denying they were put here to play Dylan.
Check out 4/17/82 and 9/11/82 for even better ones.
Jerry. Toca como ninguno esta gran rola de Dylan
Of course they are the only ones that do what they do. But, they do so much with it.
This is a nice version
Found a reel to reel sent from Korea in the mid sixties by my dad. Had it turned into a wave and cd. You will get a charge out of this.😅 Joan sings this song and 2 other songs were on the back side.ty Shazam app for the other 2. Dave van ronk yas yas yas and another song. Thank god for the dead!
WG you got the real deal plugs! You know what's up bro! There's a Wolfgang VW shop. 🔥🔥🔥☝☝☝❤❤❤❤❤
Always loved listening to this run but first time watching video and man, it’s crazy to me how high Jerry is. You would never know from listening. I used to think he looked the roughest after Brent died but he’s 41 here and looks like he’s pushing 60. Man I hate drugs. NFA
He was a heavy heroin user during this time and you can hear how he’s forgotten some of the lyrics and how that bothers him….still he produced this amazing performance. That heroin would ultimately kill him too young. I hate drugs.
I think he just woke up the great George Harrison with that shouting voice…just brilliant.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😢
Just saw Dead & Co at Citi Field after not seeing them in 29 years which was Nassau Coliseum 29 years ago. This cover is amazing
Nice combo Dylan and Garcia
In heaven
Grateful dead up there as well💥

" It’s All Over Now Baby Blue "
… You must leave, now take what you need
You think will last
But whatever you wish to keep
You better grab it fast
… Yonder stands your orphan with his gun
Crying like a fire in the Sun
Look out baby, the saints are comin' through
And it's all over now, baby blue
… The highway is for gamblers
Better use your sense
Take what you have gathered
From coincidence
… The empty handed painter from your streets
Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets
The sky too is fallin' in over you
And it's all over now, baby blue
… Leave your stepping stones behind
There's something that calls for you
Forget the debt you've left
That will not follow you
… Your lover who has just walked through the door
Has taken all his blankets from the floor
The carpet too is foldin' over you
And it's all over now baby blue
… Well, strike another match
Yeah, go start new, go start new
'Cause it's all over now, baby blue
… Hey, hey, yeah
It's all over, it's all over now, baby blue
It's all, it's all over now, oh yeah
It's all over now, all over now, baby blue

" Jetzt ist alles vorbei Baby Blue "
... Du musst gehen, nimm mit, was du brauchst
Du denkst, es wird reichen
Aber was immer du behalten willst
Nimm es lieber schnell
... Dort drüben steht dein Waisenkind mit seinem Gewehr
Heulend wie ein Feuer in der Sonne
Pass auf, Baby, die Heiligen kommen durch
Und es ist jetzt alles vorbei, Baby Blue
... Der Highway ist für Zocker
Benutze lieber deinen Verstand
Nimm, was du gesammelt hast
Vom Zufall
... Well, strike another match
Ja, fang neu an, fang neu an

... Tienes que irte, llévate lo que necesites
Crees que será suficiente
Pero lo que quieras conservar
Será mejor que te lo lleves rápido
... Allí está tu huérfano con su rifle.
Aullando como un fuego al sol
Cuidado, nena, los santos están llegando
Y todo ha terminado ahora, baby blue
... La autopista es para los jugadores
Mejor usa tu ingenio
Toma lo que has recogido
Del azar
... El pintor con las manos vacías de tus calles
Pinta locos dibujos en tus sábanas
Hasta el cielo se te cae encima
Y todo ha terminado, baby blue
... Deja atrás tus escalones
Hay algo que te llama
Olvida las deudas que has dejado atrás
Que no te seguirán
... Tu amante que acaba de entrar por la puerta
Ha quitado todas sus mantas del suelo
Incluso la alfombra se pliega sobre ti
Y todo ha terminado ahora, Baby Blue
... Bueno, enciende otra cerilla
Yeah, start over, start over
Porque todo ha terminado ahora, Baby Blue
... Hey, hey, yeah
It's all over, it's all over now, baby blue
Todo ha terminado, todo ha terminado ahora, oh sí
Ya pasó todo, ya pasó todo, baby blue
(-canción de Bob Dylan--)

When I was young (talking about 1970s) I had a compilation "Greatest Hits" LP of Grateful Dead which included a version of this song sung by Pigpen and with a significant role of organ involved. Must have been one of the earliest recordings of the band, probably still from 1960s. The LP has long gone and I lost trace of that version. And I remember that there was no indication from which album the song originated. Can anybody help me with this one (other songs that I remember from that LP were "I Know You Rider", "It Hurts me Too" and that's all)? Would love to hear it again.
Maybe Vintage Dead LP?
@@sergeytoropin6428 Thank you. Unfortunately I don't know Vintage Dead (which wasn't the title of the LP I had), but I recently found this version from 1966 which is so far the closest to the one I had once: (ua-cam.com/video/bA43XI0sFqI/v-deo.html). Interestingly, it's declared as previously unpublished. The structure of the song is basically the same, however it seems to me that it isn't the same recording, because I remember the organ being much louder than in this version (of course if it wasn't heavily remixed). But the year (1966) corresponds and the singer is definitely Pigpen with his signature voice.
If it was Pigpen, almost certainly the version from ‘Vintage Dead”. Side B is 18 minutes of ‘“In the Midnight Hour”. That album is all organ and Pigpen, a sound/style that totally changed after he died and Godchaux joined in ‘71.
@@rickroll9086 T
@@rickroll9086 Tnx. Now that you mention it, I also remember "In the Midnight Hour". Also a great song. However, the LP I had wasn't entitled "Vintage Dead" but as far as I remember simply "Greatest Hits", which of course doesn't mean that it can't be the same record. It must have been published in the early 1970s by a publisher other than their original publisher in a series of "Greatest Hits" LP's of various bands of the time. Any clue about the date of the recording? Sounds close to the one of 1966.
People hate for no reason but... Dead & CO really does bring this level of magic back to the music. Yes some of their versions suck. Well shit, some of jerry's versions don't cut the chop either. All in all it's the full experience especially if you got dosed. The magic I assure you is 100% still to be found. That spark in your chest that buzz's all the way up to your cortex. That rainy night by a candle in a window feeling. However you describe it... IT IS THERE. Shame it's their last tour. GO see em now folks im telln ya!!
