My first show, first psychedelic experience. I can definitely say the moment we all went crazy as Jerry sang "nothing left to do but SMILE SMILE SMILE" changed the trajectory of my life.
I will never forget for as long as I live the day I woke up and herd the news that Jerry died. I had just gotten laid off of work 5 days earlier. I said "fuck it" and gathered up some clothed and jumped in my van to head to San Francisco to meet with all the dead heads that I knew would be thinking like me. Craig Marshall was an AWESOME Dude. Played with such love. Enjoyed every Cubensis show I saw. Stay strong my friend. Your Father shines down upon you with his Love.
My dad passed away when I was 14. He was the biggest Deadhead I ever knew: he only listened to them and introduced me when my young self never would've found them otherwise. "Steal your face right off your head." Amazing to see how deeply the lyrics resonate with other people dealing with loss here
Little did Jerry know when playing this song that in 6 years, 1 month, and 1 week, we'd have tears welling in our eyes, thinking of him as we listen... Now he's the one who is gone. He stole your face off your head the way it should have been. For those who don't know, this song was written for the events that transpired after Lenny Hart stole $160,000 from the band and fled to California. There, he would become a minister and met his demise through drug abuse. Today, and since the day it was first performed, to us deadheads, it can be a song in memoriam of anyone who has passed away, or stole from us and isn't coming back. That's one thing I love about their songwriting and performance. The lyrics were vague for that exact reason: Hunter wished it to be open to interpretation, and the band followed along with this spirit of the music being whatever it could be to the fans. Jerry said once in an interview something along these lines: whatever they take from it in the moment, however they apply it to their lives, it's a personal thing and it's meant to be that way. Your perception of their artwork is yours and yours alone, and you can never let anyone take that from you. Be open to listening to what others have taken from the music (it's a grate way to get to know them) while knowing that your interpretation cannot be altered or changed. The only way it can be affected is in a positive way as you incorporate their experience into your own, creating a synergetic effect when you relisten or even reminisce about what you've heard. I hope that makes sense. That idea is a bit complex, you might want to read it again. Peace and love to everyone, and in particular, those who read all the way through this long, rambling comment about it all! My love is for real and will not fade away!
Cool u never let them take anything from me either. Right on man. Every human being has the same amount of value . all experiences , perceptions, and opinions are valid . If we are open and genuine towards others then understanding and love are possible.
What a deeply felt and profoundly expressed response to complex men who created art that speaks to universal truths we all experience but have no words for. Wow. Sorry for my run-on (and on and on ) sentence. But you struck a chord in my heart and soul. You heard the truth in this song, performed so close to the day he would be gone gone and nothings gonna bring him back. Much appreciated, truly.
I've been sober 20 years. Just drinking Water again and listening. My mom was a pot dealer and I grew up smoking joints with my mom in the Hollywood Hills.
I drove from NYC to see this show. Hit a bottleneck getting into the parking lot. The sun was beating strong and we were in a stand still for over an hour. While waiting in this line of cars, suddenly a car smashed into me in the back. My car wasn't even running. Apparently some young woman was playing with her bf's stick shift car and the car lunged into my rear. Finally, parked the car, and proceeded to find some tickets. Bought 2 tickets off of some guy and proceeded to the stadium. Had already missed 1st set. Got to the stadium and presented our tickets. They were both counterfeit. I can honestly say I had a crummy day. I am so glad that eventually I got to see the show on video. Seeing Jerry wide awake and smiling makes me smile smile smile.
Thank you for sharing this. Today my brother is gone three years. He loved the GD and was a real Deadhead. I have some of his set lists, his Deadbase that he marked up, and his big collection of CDs. He had a GD tattoo. After he broke his neck in the Army Airborne, he couldn't dance any more but at concerts, he would dance his own way in his wheelchair. He was such a wonderful person, I could never explain adequately. But the GD and music in general was a huge part of his life and a big source of comfort and joy after his injury.
I once had a grateful dead hoodie on in a hospital and a man who I had never met before or since, came over to me and said "Steal your face'". I replied "Sorry". He then proceeded to show me a tattoo on his arm with the 'steal your face logo' and we both smiled and walked our separate ways. That is the power of the Grateful Dead.
This came on in my car a decade ago immediately after pulling out of the vet where I had to put my 15 yr old golden retriever down. Jake was amazing RIP. I will never forget that day and this song is a big part of it. FEEELSSSS!
I’m 53 and just boarded the bus this past summer while on vacation. I was determined to listen to the Dead until it clicked. Boy did it ever. The Dead has made such a deep connection with my soul that it’s difficult to explain. Probably because I’m still processing it all. It truly has been a ‘Long Strange Trip’ getting here and I’m loving every minute of it. The best part of it all has been reading and listening to all of your stories. I almost feel sad for not being part of all of those moments. But I was young and naïve at that time. Better late than never I suppose. The Dead are a part of me now. As others have said I am now home. Peace and love to all of you, my friends. ☮️

My father just loved this song. When he past away back in 1999,we played this at his funeral.Everyone had a tear in their eyes.Thank you Grateful Dead for a beautiful song !
This just turns into absolute bliss. Bobby and Brent laughing and singing together after 9 minutes along with Jerry very focused while playing and singing the same notes on top of the backing vocals by the guys. And then that wail by Brent at 11:30 is just insane!
@@frankthreewit3287no it was written about Mickey's uncle after stealing the $160,000 from the band, getting whacked on drugs and losing everyone from the Family.
The Dead were at their peak in 89? That's a pretty ignorant statement, early to mid 70s was their peak, pre Donna. Jerry was a shell of himself after the diabetic coma of 1986.
@@Chasstful The op said "in '89 the Dead was in peak". Doubt he or anyone believes they were at THEIR peak in '89. In fact I've rarely seen anyone say their peak was sometime other than in 70s or late 60s
That amazingly subtle guitar meow after "cat on a tin roof" is incredible. It's that attention to detail and musicianship that keeps me coming back to Jerry and the boys.
How about the physical/mental cues Brent and Bobby were giving each other towards the end on backup vocals? They mess up the first one and Bobby just laughs (which is awesome in and of itself), then we see em screw it up a coupe more times, then you see bobby giving him directions, points to his left which in their secret code means "no, man go back to the other line" and brent hits it, gives a nod, saying "gotcha man, on the same page now" and they then tear it up.....this might not be that neat to anyone else.
...in some time, after this, at Shoreline, Mt.View, CA...just after Brent died, they played this, and I cried epically, and I will never forget that moment. Smile, Smile, Smile.
Start watching around 3:06. After Jerry sings "Nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile!", they cut to Brent and he is smiling. Then they cut back to show Jerry smiling because the audience loved it! Jerry's reaction to the crowd reaction is beautiful and priceless. God, I miss Jerry but so thankful there are videos to relive the magic.
Jerry would often cry during certain parts of songs, other times he would hold it back by widely grinning and shaking his head being overcome with joy all at the same time..🎭🌈💕
Steve Cook he had some really good lsd.. ive had it before. the crystal had been in the guys freezer who made it for jerrys personal stash..frozen since 1973.. file under things that happen randomly in the mountains by mt shasta. 🤭😂😍
Jerry looks genuinely happy here. It’s amazing to watch. They were at the top of their game. Jerry was healthy and clean and they were playing tight. What a great time here to be alive.
Ever since my uncles passing this song often reminds me of him. He unfortunately overdosed on drugs and was taken away too soon. RIP to my uncle glad I made the most out of the time spent with him. It’s never enough though, never forget to cherish the people closest to you.
My dad passed yesterday, and I came across this version for the first time. It's always going to hold a special place in my heart. The interaction between Brent and Jerry, and watching how they basically are telepathic, is incredibly beautiful. Them softly doing the "ooh, nothing's going to bring him back" repeatedly starting at 8:00 is so beautiful.
sorry for your loss bro.... read your comment at 8:00 exactly and felt compelled to say something, as this song has a deep place in my heart as well. look up infamous stringdusters version it is probably the second best version they do it real justice.
My good friend passed away 7 months ago & this was one of her favorite songs I know she's gone but I still think the next time I'm at Max Creek I will see her amazing smile as she runs towards us to give us one of her amazing hugs! We miss her as much as we loved her & that will never change!
Ya know I was always a music guy but the Dead never really clicked with me until my 50's. Now I shake my head that I never saw them. I think they are the bomb.
I rarely listen to shows these days. Then out of the blue I jump back. I can pull up memories of what venue, where I was located in the crowd, the tempo, and clear visualization of the band, for any given song. It was real, and it was good.
Underrated in the sense so many other musicians have been by the industry, definitely not by the band or fans. I think it was Jerry who said the band was real hungry for color, that Brent added that color they'd been craving to their sound. The incarnation of the band with Brent at the keys was them at their best for me, for many reasons, and despite many reasons.

'89 was the Dead at a peak and you can see it here…..Jerry was clean, band having a good time, smiles all around. Magic.
DeadReckoning nah. 71-74 was their peak. But 87-89 was their last solid peak. After 99/91 it was all down hill. 92-95 is hard to watch.
I'd call '89 a Dead renaissance. Amazing shows to be sure though. That summer tour was incredible.
The Dead were at their peak in 89? That's a pretty ignorant statement, early to mid 70s was their peak, pre Donna. Jerry was a shell of himself after the diabetic coma of 1986.
@@mperrotti76 90-91 meh. I bowed out when Brent did.
@@Chasstful The op said "in '89 the Dead was in peak". Doubt he or anyone believes they were at THEIR peak in '89. In fact I've rarely seen anyone say their peak was sometime other than in 70s or late 60s
The mood and tone of this version pure bliss
That amazingly subtle guitar meow after "cat on a tin roof" is incredible. It's that attention to detail and musicianship that keeps me coming back to Jerry and the boys.
Thanks for that cool insight! Never noticed the "meow."
Incredible version. A must listen....loud.
Thanks for everything, Phil. NFA
Best 'He's Gone' ever
How about the physical/mental cues Brent and Bobby were giving each other towards the end on backup vocals? They mess up the first one and Bobby just laughs (which is awesome in and of itself), then we see em screw it up a coupe more times, then you see bobby giving him directions, points to his left which in their secret code means "no, man go back to the other line" and brent hits it, gives a nod, saying "gotcha man, on the same page now" and they then tear it up.....this might not be that neat to anyone else.
that specific part made this version very special to me
i love the vocal dueling in "let the good time roll" between bobby and brent also
thanks for pointing it out, I love it. These guys were so good. Paid attention, all in.
starts around 9:15 if anybody is wondering

RIP Craig Marshall!!! Loved by all. Band leader for Cubensis. Bringing the Dead back to life. Miss you Dad!!! Irreplaceable ❤️❤️❤️
Sorry about your dad brother. He sounds like a great guy
...in some time, after this, at Shoreline, Mt.View, CA...just after Brent died, they played this, and I cried epically, and I will never forget that moment. Smile, Smile, Smile.
So grateful to have been there, seems like yesterday, wish it was yesterday..."nothing left to do but smile, smile, SMILE"
That's the part that gives me goosebumps. What beautiful magic they created! ❤
I was there, that moment was incredible.....what a magical night this was

@@mikehavard1396 damn u caught me off guard there, u earned my like
I think he's smiling at Brent's bad ass harmony... Either way what a vibe
Oh man the smiles between Bobby and Brent, that was great.
I didn’t know that but have been doing the same thing
I feel that same feeling sometimes.
Bobby shreds in this, so simple but so amazing. He compliments Garcia’s sound so well. They first riff is unbelievable
Not simple, unique

Love it when Jerry smiles
So fantastic to see Garcia smiling and seeming to enjoy this immensely.
Truly one of the greatest songs I have ever heard.
Jerry looks genuinely happy here. It’s amazing to watch. They were at the top of their game. Jerry was healthy and clean and they were playing tight. What a great time here to be alive.
Late 80s& early 90s is the best Dead!
I don't know how Mickey and Bill do their thing -- it's like free form and just blended in perfect non-sync. It's amazing watching them play together.
Drum-heavy; the rhythm devils shining with Phil leading the way, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, Amen.
You know it, brother!
Ever since my uncles passing this song often reminds me of him. He unfortunately overdosed on drugs and was taken away too soon. RIP to my uncle glad I made the most out of the time spent with him. It’s never enough though, never forget to cherish the people closest to you.
Brent's voice was so amazing. So lucky to go back and hear these ones.
oof! Personally I find Brent’s voice is best mixed real low in the mix. Too loud for my poor ears here lol
And "Blow Away" chills & tears cuz that song speaks such Truth!
One of the best He's Gone I've heard.
Edward Skrod my favorite version of this song
Was amazing live. My first one actually.
You, sir, are a lucky bastard!
I like the European tour version the best
Edward Skrod the best one i heard
My dad passed yesterday, and I came across this version for the first time. It's always going to hold a special place in my heart. The interaction between Brent and Jerry, and watching how they basically are telepathic, is incredibly beautiful. Them softly doing the "ooh, nothing's going to bring him back" repeatedly starting at 8:00 is so beautiful.
sorry for your loss bro.... read your comment at 8:00 exactly and felt compelled to say something, as this song has a deep place in my heart as well. look up infamous stringdusters version it is probably the second best version they do it real justice.
Otis Redding 😂
yes this was a amazing version...Also watch" brent mydland takes us to school..""
Otis Redding condolences
Lost my father when I was 25 he was 52. This music shaped my childhood and will always mean the world to me.
My good friend passed away 7 months ago & this was one of her favorite songs I know she's gone but I still think the next time I'm at Max Creek I will see her amazing smile as she runs towards us to give us one of her amazing hugs! We miss her as much as we loved her & that will never change!

Smile smile smile. For those who missed out. There will never be anything like it.
I'm only 34 but have been a head since I was 13. Never saw jerry tho. Thanks for paving the way.
This one right here is why Brent was so great. Whole band is on point but Brent really showing how big of a contribution he made to the band.
aint that the truth, not many gave this guy his credits
This is so true!! Brent held up his end of the band so beautifully!! RIP Jerry and Brent too!! ❤❤
Always delivers. Today is no exception.
even to this day i miss Jerry and the boys back the way things used to be..it's been over twenty plus years and i still can't believe that he's gone
Brent was one of a kind
Jerry hand picked him :)
I always thought Brent played with some of Bobby's side projects and he picked him
moonbowfalls wrong...He played with Bobby
Sin City yes sir
They were never the same after Brent passed live.
Ya know I was always a music guy but the Dead never really clicked with me until my 50's. Now I shake my head that I never saw them. I think they are the bomb.
RIP Phil! Love ya. Time to join your brothers and give heaven one hell of a jam session.
I rarely listen to shows these days. Then out of the blue I jump back. I can pull up memories of what venue, where I was located in the crowd, the tempo, and clear visualization of the band, for any given song. It was real, and it was good.
Alpine valley Wisconsin. 2 days on 1day off 2 days on. Wow. Saw them a lot in the 80s. Those were the best days ever RIP all you Deadheads RIP
I watch this at least once or twice a month. Miss you Jerry And Brent. Legendary
Brent was underrated, he had some magical vocals
Brian Cameron he did
underrated in general even, not just vocals.
I don't think Brent was underrated, he was pretty much the star of the show from mid 80's until he died. The band certainly didn't underrate him
Underrated in the sense so many other musicians have been by the industry, definitely not by the band or fans. I think it was Jerry who said the band was real hungry for color, that Brent added that color they'd been craving to their sound. The incarnation of the band with Brent at the keys was them at their best for me, for many reasons, and despite many reasons.
God I loved the Brent Years!
Brent held off nicely. You know he is like a powder keg waiting to explode vocally. He maintained his exposure well. Namaste!
Ed Mc well that’s on the sound guy. Always felt Brent’s vocals were consistently too loud in the mix.
Such a beautiful show and it shows on all their faces….especially Jerry’s⚡️❤️.
Capt Tripps...a FINE tuned GUITAR AND PEDAL STEEL MASTER....i miss so much..first show 71...many....to the end... Every one of these fine players massaged my thoughts for years....ty GD
89 was a great year .
Love the echo... The Dead always brought the best sound system for their live shows ...crisp , clear and loud..
With head phones I can hear each instrument clearly. That's rare for my tired ears and UA-cam combo
Get FLAC files and all your music will be like that. Even in these 50 yr old ears of mine.
Nothing left to do but smile smile smile. Has gotten me through life. Stealing faces is a different story
One of my best friends passed this year, just before he could catch the tour in Colorado, where we met at lot in Boulder in 2017. I just hope Jerry is showing you a good time in the beyond Thomas. I miss you brother. Tour wasn't the same without you.
If this could be packaged and boxed up, it would sit upon a mantle somewhere in Heaven. I’m so happy this exists. Brings a tear to my eye every time.
