I saw the Dead many times during the "Brent years". On an off-night they were still pretty good, on a great night they were beyond description. This jam right here is the epitome of The Dead, there will never be another. Forever grateful I got to witness this band.
This was the best "Deal" I have ever heard or seen in person. God, they were amazing. I'm so happy I'm so old at 64 that I've been a deadhead for so many years. And it's nothing but good, and good Karma. And thanks to Robert Hunter for the lyrics which are really a cautionary poem that says don't just act based on the cards you think the other player has..
Icon O'Clast Hunter and Garcia together again. God Bless them Both. Was lucky enough to see the Dead around this time in the Old Boston Gahden and a few times before and after. Was extremely lucky to have seen Robert Hunter in Boston as well. All by himself, one guitar and a mike strapped to his head. Sang everything from Box of Rain to Terrapin Station. Will never ever forget that one.
I first saw the Dead play in 1970- 50 years ago. I thought they were great then. Saw them at Rochester when the Jefferson Airplane came by- they were also playing in Rochester. Somehow got onto the end of the stage . Unfortunately as I grew older I stepped back from the Dead . Last time I saw them was in Boston back in late ‘70’ s. Watching this video I realize just how much I missed- especially when Brent became the keyboard man. I agree I never heard them play so damn good as they did in this and other videos from the late ‘80’s. Big Regret. Have a bumper sticker which reads “Make America Grateful Again”. If that could only be possible.
I only got to see 2 GD shows, ‘deal ‘Was played both times .... at Rfk ... i was so happy when the intro started cuz they just slothed their war thru a 70 min ‘wharf rat’.. lol
Brent IS awesome! So much soul it oozes out of his pours and voice. After the tough year in '86 with Jer in the coma, once they got their step back, they were on fire!!!
Jerry is such a master of blending styles into a seamless whole. This tune has Jimmy Rodgers, Louis Armstrong, and Jimi Hendrix all folded into it. Kind of amazing.
Turn your eyes to the sky while saying "god bless the Grateful Dead" This is a twirling/loose yourself Deal if I ever heard one. We love and miss you Jerry.✌
There is nothing better than this.. then the boys firing on all cylinders.. Jerry was on fire right here. Glad I saw them countless times during these days .
When you really understand the dynamics all the members are extrapolating into this 3D realm from their musical reservoir it’s mind blowing. Phil thumping away, Mickey ritzing on the cymbals, Bobby rippling into eternity, etc. Jerry is beyond the doors of perception and throwing us gifts from eternity with his guitar. WOW what a sizzling performance 🥵🤩🤪
IVE BEEN LISTENING TO A BUNCH OF PODCAST. I WASNT AWARE THAT THE LATE 80S EARLY 90S THEY PERFECTED LIGHTS AND MIDI TECH. I LISTEN TO THOSE SHOWS WAY MORE CLOSELY. JERRY WAS TALKING ABOUT DIGITAL ART AND DRAWING TABLETS IN 1990. I WISH I COULD SEE THE EARLY DEAD> SUCKS BEING BORN IN 1984.
I was in attendance and I can tell you, I'll never forget this. I just noticed it had gotten dark. I had my bottle of moonshine(Jack and Coke), everybody's groove was on, it was an unforgettable trip..
There are times when it takes Jerry a little time to "come up to temperature" during a jam. Then there are times when he's on full boil when it starts. 3:56 is one of those times.
I can't stress this enough; "I WAS THERE!!! Final night at Alpine, where we "still had to stand out in the pouring rain." Luckily, I was 17th row, Jerry side in the covered pavilion. Yeah, one third of Downhill from Here was my show. Then I trucked up to Buffalo on the 4th of Uncle Sam Blues, July, to see 10,000 Maniacs (the band, not the twirlers by the exits). All I could say is the fellas opened. They had me at "Bertha."!
I underestimated Brent so much. 😔. I only started to see the Dead in 79 and saw them straight through 93. I always thought I missed out on the "good good" but looking back, Jesus god, Brent took us to church so many times ❤️❤️❤️❤️ and I am blessed to have experienced his phenomenal interplay with Jerry.
I think this performance might perfectly sum up the Grateful Dead. Starts out a little sloppy and settles into what is a serviceable performance of a classic. But Jerry wanted more and takes the song to its limits (while also pushing the band to their limits). The magic of this band was that any night, any song could yield a legendary performance for the ages. If you don't believe me, just look at the band's faces.
Was rather impressed with the first solo Jerry did here, then the second solo kicked in and everyone in the band went all out! Incredible band and performance.
Puleez. This was the greatest brent show and the greatest jerry show of the brent show of the brent era. Jerry was in a boisterous mood. I know. I was partying with him before and after the show. The althea from this and deal are my faves of each. This deal scorches. That solo , even bobby looked at bill going wtf???!? Alpine was my fave midwest to see them. Never ever disappointed. This is exhibit A of what lsd infused cheese curds and 90 grade cocaine does to jerry.
Ras Shawn - I’ve always thought the same thing. Owning the VHS of this show, I’ve seen this show at least 125 times. This still gets me every time. Goosebumps, tears, smiles. About every emotion one could have.
Wow wow wow. I have listen to this band for 45 years, and still i dance around the room and my jaw just drops on some of these riffs. What an amazing version of such a great aing. For people who say Jerry wasn’t having fun in his later career. Look again!!! The dude just tore that up. Wow wow wow!!!!
No human being on the planet is going to ever bring the energy of these men into music into an audience that could be comprehensively understood of the Gen x age it just can't be done it won't be done only we will understand it you had to be there to understand the base behind Jerry Garcia's music behind stage in the corridors as we searched for the best acoustic sound off between structurally sounded buildings to give off the music that we were in search for I can never explain it and nobody will ever understand what I'm talking about
I watched Loser first, then it went right into Deal as I was putting the finishing touches on a 60-page article I was writing on the lessons I learned through the years from the Dead. It doesn't get any better than this. Loser: so sad and melancholy but ultimately defiant, and Deal takes us to the place all tne other commenters described - soaring into the stratosphere, in perfect sync. Nothing has been even close to the Dead in 75 years of rock 'n roll. And this was the final good era of a wise and healthy Garcia. Did you see the look on his face? He knew how tough he made it on himself. This was the golden era from '89-'92, and that's when it began to decline again ....by the time they got to Chicago in Summer '95, it was hard to watch in many ways. But damn, they give us the moon on this one -- I feel like I was reborn.
No Jerry, No Show....I attended 1:5 they cancelled of over 2,300+ shows in New Haven....we had all just dropped & threw a rose on the stage & off to the parking lot we tropped ....Jorma is as close as it gets
This was my 3rd of countless Dead shows in my life. I started wearing my big brother's dead shirts since i was in 6th Grade and they all made fun of me. Then, 5 years later, i saw a few of the creeps at shows! The told me i was ahead of my time and that the were "Sorry for not knowing any better." Ha!!!!!
A tear actually came to my eye at the end of this solo. 🥲 It felt like Jerry was pouring his heart into it. RIP man.
Yep. He was not "dialing it in" on this night.
How about Bobby’s shirt that will leave a tear in your eye
That solo by Jerry is simply spectacular!
I saw the Dead many times during the "Brent years". On an off-night they were still pretty good, on a great night they were beyond description. This jam right here is the epitome of The Dead, there will never be another. Forever grateful I got to witness this band.
I think they may have been at their best 87-89, I’m grateful to have seen them so many times.
Preach.
@@inreellife8258 I'm grateful to have seen them a couple two tree times.
Brent & Jerry were MAGIC 🔥. Wish Jerry had that with Bobby, but I never felt it. Just Jerry Brent & Phil.
Good morning lil skoolie...
This was the best "Deal" I have ever heard or seen in person.
God, they were amazing. I'm so happy I'm so old at 64 that I've been a deadhead for so many years. And it's nothing but good, and good Karma.

Lucky man!

DAMN!! That was one FIERY performance of Deal!! Fantastic!
Jerry absolutely melted every single attendees face off with that final solo.... WOAH
WHOA too.
Brent was awesome ...
fuck yeah
Can’t agree more!
Brent IS awesome! So much soul it oozes out of his pours and voice. After the tough year in '86 with Jer in the coma, once they got their step back, they were on fire!!!
Sad I never got to see Brent era Dead. The only time I saw them before Jerry died was when Vince was playing keys.
He still is. Just not here amongst us.
8min Mark? Fckn chills. What a band. What a sound. Absolutely masterful
Jerry is such a master of blending styles into a seamless whole. This tune has Jimmy Rodgers, Louis Armstrong, and Jimi Hendrix all folded into it. Kind of amazing.
If the grateful dead isn't your favorite band after hearing this...............
Hell ya
Holy shit this deal is insane, I love it !
I could listen to Garcia jam like this for eternity
Holy smoke, what a Jerry solo!!
Turn your eyes to the sky while saying "god bless the Grateful Dead" This is a twirling/loose yourself Deal if I ever heard one. We love and miss you Jerry.✌
Jayson Eubanks like the saying goes , if all else fails, TWIRL !!!
There is nothing better than this.. then the boys firing on all cylinders.. Jerry was on fire right here. Glad I saw them countless times during these days .

WOW what a sizzling performance 🥵🤩🤪
I’m with you all the way on this!
Fuck yes
Brent hammering home a sound that resembles the wind at the beach* would be the only thing you missed 😜

Jerry hits the overdrive....lights out!
kruetzmans face at 7:52 mark.......he The Dead melts his face. he was hanging on for dear life.
And how about the Jerry smile right after that around the 8:00 mark
I've seen this video countless times and this is the first time I'm noticing this... I can't stop laughing
Hahaha priceless. Thanks for pointing that out
The moments we all chased. A band beyond description.
One of the best deals I've ever heard..thnx Jer..miss you!
The greatest gift in my life has been the Grateful Dead!
I was in attendance and I can tell you, I'll never forget this. I just noticed it had gotten dark. I had my bottle of moonshine(Jack and Coke), everybody's groove was on, it was an unforgettable trip..
Ryan Trost I was there as well and it was pure magic. God I miss the Alpine days
Wow. Can't believe you guys were there.
If I had a time machine I'd go back to July 19th 1989 alpine valley
@David Nussbaum, bring me some dry clothes!
Rad as Fudge
Absolute shredder in every sense. Had to rewind back for a second helping of that jam
always loved how smooth the drummers are in this band
First thing I noticed about this performance.
Bill flubs it completely at 7:17.
There are times when it takes Jerry a little time to "come up to temperature" during a jam. Then there are times when he's on full boil when it starts. 3:56 is one of those times.

what a smokin deal! 89 was a great year for the dead. always loved these alpine valley shows.
I had the BEST time at this show ❤️
I was suffering from the worst hangover of my life but this show took to another place!
That is a legendary jam!
SAY It Again
I think this performance might perfectly sum up the Grateful Dead. Starts out a little sloppy and settles into what is a serviceable performance of a classic. Yeah, this rendition is a masterpiece, for sure
Phil and Bobby couldn't even look up
Jerry was going somewhere, and I was going to help him get there- phil
This was their rock and roll hall of fame performance
Puleez. This was the greatest brent show and the greatest jerry show of the brent show of the brent era. Jerry was in a boisterous mood. I know. I was partying with him before and after the show. 😂😂😂❤
I was at this Alpine was the best midwest stop in the 80's camping vending 3 days straight. Deer Creek Buckeye Lake great too.
was at all three of these final alpine shows. what a time!
Phil Lesh is a bad bad man
No one can do the shuffle like the dead with brent
From my favorite dead show of all time.
all cylinders firing on this one! F^@k me running. WOW! Jerry climaxes at 8:00. I mean, really? WOW!
Ras Shawn - I’ve always thought the same thing. Owning the VHS of this show, I’ve seen this show at least 125 times. This still gets me every time. Goosebumps, tears, smiles. About every emotion one could have.
this'll do, forever
always did.
Like when Bobby looks back at Billy, like, hey, some kind of jam
I'm crying...in a grateful way. Sooo perfect!! Whoooo hoooo!!!
Tara, I am Dead to this day.
3:47 Brent looking at Jerry like my Springer at me when he's ready for a run. It's time
5:38 kreutzman gets bobby's attention. "good coke huh"
he totally does
The Rhythm devils just incredible in every song, but this was off the charts
Grateful Dead: fantastic as ever
Wow wow wow.
I have listen to this band for 45 years, and still i dance around the room and my jaw just drops on some of these riffs.
What an amazing version of such a great aing. For people who say Jerry wasn’t having fun in his later career. Look again!!! The dude just tore that up.
Wow wow wow!!!!
Me too man.

WHAT A TUNEEE! WOW!
six musicians hitting on all cylinders. brilliant
Nothing like a Grateful Dead concert
absolutely amazing, keep on truckin
They were still so great in '89.
This was unbelievable...from another dimension.
One of my biggest regrets in life is that I wasn’t born early enough to experience this in person
3:56 moment of zen when Jerry turns the dial and starts his jam.
This was my last Dead show. Oh, man . . .
Brent & Jerry. 🔥 Nothing touches it.
Jerry and Bill are just like ....wow, this is even cool for us.
Never be another band this good! NEVER
My son loves this song, he doesn't understand my music. He sure enjoys this one
I love Phil's face.
"Yeah we're melting your face..and?"
I was there. Epic show!
Nothing Good Ever Dies....Greatness Lives

Not many bands just kept getting better, the dead is an exception
Damn I forget just a how great Jerry was on guitar sometimes fantastic

Goosebumps
"Ladies and Gentlemen ...... The Grateful Dead"
MAKE IT COME BACK... MAKE IT COME BACK!!!!
I am unaware of any performance of Deal that even remotely approaches this one.
+terrapanda Jerry Garcia Band with Bob Weir Long Island 1989 is the best Deal I've ever heard
+terrapanda That was pretty special.
I would agree. But the Trucking' Up to Buffalo DVD, has a stellar version too. It was recorded at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park on July 4, 1989.
10-16-89 is right up there with this one.
@c0nz0rd00d~~~I believe that's from 90 or 91, and it's smoking fucking hot
Holy shit!
I love the way Phil plays the bass. Of course the whole band is awesome, just saying.
Jerry taps into his 1968 self on the 2nd solo....goes straight Aoxomoxoa......
Daniel B - yup...pretty much ALL of '89 is Jerry in absolute PEAK form in terms of his tone...channels his '60s sound as pure as ever
You Rock Jerrryyyyy!
I wonder if Jerry ever said.... Hey Bob, what with the wardrobe? Great performance!
I was there!
✌💀👍🎸🎶🎵🧠🌌♾⚡❤
7/19/89 - best first set ever. Way better than set 2 on this show.
Damn Jerry was on that night.
I was there!
Gavin Shear me too and it was pure magic.
Also a great Deal April 1 st , 1988 and a great show at Brendan Byrne, Arena, New Jersey
5:54 - Jerry sez "we're killin this one"

As Jim Carey said in "The Mask"~~Ssssssmokin!!
Smokin dude
This was my 3rd of countless Dead shows in my life.
I started wearing my big brother's dead shirts since i was in 6th Grade and they all made fun of me. Then, 5 years later, i saw a few of the creeps at shows! The told me i was ahead of my time and that the were "Sorry for not knowing any better." Ha!!!!!
Jerry gettin’ it!
back here everyday
When Jerry turns the knob and hits an open A at 3:56, look out!!!
Soooo good I'm dancing
Cheers!
Any 89 deal is pretty special it seems. The boys were on fire then
89 was legendary!
