Thanks. I have gotten some mixed reaction like: ohh ok - just candles....and ....."i buy mine in the supermarket for 3 dollars - yours are 24" ..........then I break down why handmade stuff is so much more expensive and they wont buy anything anyway. frustrating

@@l.b.1952 Ask them. If they prefer , frozen cheap pizza from supermarket? Or you spend some extra and make homemade , with different ingredients , cheese and dressings which actually will be tasty and make you happy? Yeah , supermarket pizza will do its purpose, it will kill your hunger feeling. BUT, is it actually good? Same goes to the candles.

For any new makers here, listen to this guy. It takes time, in any business. Give it time and keep the faith in your own ability. Candles or pet collars. A business takes time to get going. Take the time. It will be worth it.
Don't be afraid to be creative. People like to see different things. That's why so many people shop and support small businesses.

Thank you Wayne for all the advice you give. I started this 8 months ago after watching your if I were to start a candle making business in 2022 and let me tell you, the emotional rollercoaster of starting a business is REAL! I can’t even count the number of times I said I quit! And then the high of other times when it was just flourishing and on fire! But I’m sticking with it! Time and patience is the key to growth, it won’t happen overnight. Keep going if you’re feeling discouraged and keep learning and you will surprise yourself, I know I have! ☺️☺️❤️

It sounds like fun and I'm currently in the hobby stage of it. I recently purchased over $300.00 in candle supplies. I looked at the candle calculator and the cost o f each candle I make comes to $4,00. Despite criticisms I enjoy using 464 soy. Now if I were to ship the candles I would need to use a wax with a higher melt point. It's more of a science to figure the right combination of wax, fragrance, color and wick. When fragrancing my home with lavender candles I was not 0nly creating an atmosphere of calm but was chasing away bugs. Other fragrances besides lavender calms you to sleep 😴

    • @BlackTieBarn
      @BlackTieBarn  2 роки тому

Yes. Lavender doeea work again many bugs and is racing. Double bonus! And $4 per candle isn't bad for someone just starting out. Thst cost will come way down as you grow. :)

You are a great generous guy!!
    Thanks for advices.
And yes, you are a perfectionist, I ve observed you getting stressed with the merest little mess... 😂
I wish I would be more like you... 😂
Having had to deal with so much problems on so many levels, I learned to completely ignore any mess around me to focus on what I want to do. Now I have to unlearn and make order everywhere, because you are right. As it may help to ignore the mess for a while, it does not work on a longer term...
    Thanks for clear words...
And by the way, perfection does simply not exist. Nowhere. But we all try to get the closest to it... That s the charme of it.

Im halfway through and these seem to apply 100% to ANY small business 😂
It's sad that this is funny and simultaneously necessary for you to say, but "it will take effort" is unfortunately no longer common sense to people. Our brains have been wired through instant gratification conditioning that its *shocking* how many people might have the skills/talents but quit in frustration after a few months.
As long as youre not LOSING money, or the amount lost is so insignificant you deem it a worthwhile part of your growth process, then keep going!

Candle making for me is juat me getting my foot in the door to my own biz. Id love to make teas and yoni steams too and then making self care bundles. I also want to do retreats, sound healing so many things! And id love to package these separately as well as one big bundle!! Ive seen so many amazing business babes keep themselves open to expansion and they do just fine! So if it were me, i honestly wouldnt worry TOO much about a niche. I say fk a niche lol but thats just me. And im not a pro sooo.... Do with this what you want.

@@aliciaaltom6652 I dont disagree. Different strategies work better for different people for sure. And you have to enjoy what you are doing. Also, I think "niche" is misunderstood sometimes. id be curious to know what you consider your neiche /market

    • @BlackTieBarn

It can be anything. And niche is just one way to find a spot in a market. It can be also be about location, Pricing, etc. Building around a certain market or market is a general approach. I really just am encouraging having a plan for what you're making and who you think your customers will be. Choosing a specific niche is just an option for settling in on a direct specific market. Not required. Although sometimes easier

@@BlackTieBarn would you say the way you do your names and labels to be like your neiche? like the scents all being a street name. I think ive come up with my targeted group but guess i fear still being to generic at the same time.

@@brendan3081 Good question. On that particularly collection you are referring to.. yes, you could say that is a fun way to brand them and tie them all together. I wouldn't call it a niche but more of a branding concept. A niche usually means a hyper focused target market or topic (a candle company for pets, for travelers, for sports, etc). But can also be more generic less focuses "niche" as well. And my main point was that its good to have some sort of idea who you envision buying your products. Becasue if you can design a brand around them it will be easier to sell to them. Wheras, the name of my candles in your example was just a fun way to name them and make them consistent as part of the same collection.

Everyone mentions writing a biz plan... I honestly have NO CLUE what that means or where to start

You don't really need to be overly stressed about it or complex. A general outline of what you want and need at different stages is a great plan. But if interested in more details on that. Just Google how to make a small business plan and you will get tons of ideas and guidance. :)

Great advice as usual that came at the perfect time. I'm off to a very slow start with my business with several health set backs but I'm still moving forward. My sales are low but I'm not worried about that because of set backs, I'm better now and production has started on more frequent basis again. My question for you, do candles have a shelf life? It seems like others are worried that this fall/Winter season might not do well and as a small business owner, I don't mind making a batching of candles and if they all don't sell this season hold on to them until next season if possible?

Thanks! Should definitely be fine. Keep away from uv light. Cool dry storage is best. You can also run an out of season sale. :)

You always say "know your market"... so let me ask you whos ur market? Because your candles doesnt seem to be niche focused.

Market and niche are not the same thing. Niche is just one wsy to define a market. But... I have several lines and collections, and several accounts that are white label, private label as well. I just mostly use my standard line on this channel for educational purposes.
But I also mentioned in the video... your market doesn't have to mean "niche". That's just one route. You can appeal to general market, or a market based on price points, or location, etc. But the main point being, marketing doesn't mean niche. That's just one way of doing it. :)
