It cost me about 1.5K from the very beginning till I launched last month. It's not cheap, but extremely rewarding. I'm a teenager, so it's been funded completely by my part-time job.
This was so beneficial! I’m in the testing phase of my wax melt business and it’s cost me about $1,500 leading up to launching my shop in a couple of weeks. Fairly low investment to get started in my opinion!❤
I spend $500 just on my continuous label rolls itself! Not including my $3,000 label maker I purchased. Don’t get me started on the HUGE expense during the testing phase. I’ve easily spent over 1k just in testing
This video is beyond helpful. I wanted to leave a comment to help with your algorithm but also to encourage you in continuing with doing what you are doing because you are KILLING IT GIRL!!!. Awesome Job!
I started watching couple of months ago.!! You provide sooo much valuable information and you are being so honest and open about your journey which transcends that and goes beyond, helping each and every one of us willing to start something small of our own. Thank you so much for the honesty and sweetness you give on this platform!! 🙏🏻🤗
I've invested over 1200.00 and nowhere near a launch yet. But I'm enjoying the making of candles (finally) since it was something I'd always wanted to do, but never seemed to have the time. Now I'm disabled and have the time, just need to find a niche! It's the slow time of year for most "extra" purchases, I imagine that includes candles. I'm hoping to finish testing soon after shifting from soy 464 & trying IGI 6006. We'll see how that goes. THANK YOU FOR SUCH AN INFORMATIVE CHANNEL! I LOVE YOUR STYLE! 💙
One thing I would HIGHLY recommend for any business that does a lot of printing and label making is to invest in an Ecotank type printer. Over a very short time this will save you a huge amount of money and frustration! Cartridges are really expensive and are a "gimmick" in that if you are out of only one color, you will still have to buy a full ink replacement. This wastes tons of ink and creates a lot of trash throwing away the used cartridges. What is worse is that on many printers, if you are out of only ONE color ink, your printer won't print anything at all. On some this is true even if it is a colored ink you are out of and only try to print in black. It is no good to need product labels and find out while packing orders that your printer has gone on strike. Ecotanks don't use cartridges at all. They have ink tanks inside that you just refill with bottles of whichever ink you need to top off. No ink goes to waste and there is never a wasted cartridge to throw away. I have an Epson Ecotank I bought on sale from Target for around $250. It has for sure paid for it's slightly higher upfont cost many times over. I got nearly a year's worth of labels printed just from the bottles of ink that came with the printer! I did not realize until I had to refill it that I had completely forgotten about ink as a businss cost. I then went and looked back at my records and reaized if I were still using cartridges at the same rate as I had the previous year, I would have spent way more than the costs of both buying and filling the printer just hassling with ink.
Agreed. I've been making stickers with a $200 Canon Pixma Megatank for over a month now. Great color payoff and I have not had to replace the ink yet. It was a constant battle of always being out of ink with any other printer I've ever owned. It's SLOW though lol.
Thanks for shooting straight. Now it’s time for me to hustle hard to get my start up money. Gonna be a while for me, pray. I’m taking over once I enter. God Bless
Don't do what I did and buy a whole bunch of fragrance oils in the beginning lol especially in bigger size bottles. 🤦🏻♀️ P.S. Erica thank YOU for all the help you have been!! ❤️❤️
I started my business last year..I spent a little more than $20,000.00 to get it started, and have a quality product..I have had to discontinue some items already as the either don’t sell or there is no interest in them..I can imagine only needing $1500 to buy some upfront products..but to keep the business going through the slow times..takes money
Hi... I've been binge watching your channel for days. Do you have any videos where you talk about the process you underwent to learn how to make your candles and by that I mean determining the wax(es) you decided to use, how you learned which wicks to use, how you narrowed down what you offer in your candle line? Thanks
Thanks for this video my sister and I are starting up a candle business, but were doing the testing stage now and seeing how it goes. This videonhas helped me a lot...
I would also add it's worth it to consult an attorney and most with do an hour of questions for a couple hundred bucks. Because each state is different. I haven't even launched yet and before I did anything I went to a cpa and attorney to know what stuff I had to have on my website etc. 💙
Hey - really interesting watch as a wannabe candle business owner! Really keen to know how do you stand with safety data sheets (a prerequisite for selling here in England). How did you go about getting safety accreditation for your products and how do you factor that into your startup costing?
Hello Erica, I am thinking about to start and actually i wanted to see if i will enjoy candle making so i ordered a diy kit before ordering testing supplies. I have a question, let’s say i know i wanted to work with soy wax and i got only soy wax supplies.. what do i have to test actually? İs it how to pour, pouring degree, scent or scent ratio? How a particular brand soy wax burns and in how many minutes? Different styles of labels? What i will be actually testing? Can we just start with soy wax and fragrances that are recommended and already tested by experts like you and have a short cut and avoid extra costs? Thank you and i really appreciated the video.
I really appreciate the way, effort, and time you put on making this video. any suggestion from anyone to narrow my testing option to reduce cost...... what is the best wax to start with jar scented candles... is it Soya, Coconuts, etc. I don't want to test everything for my very first item... Scented candles in glass jars up to 7 ounce only your suggestion will be super helpful to start testing . also if any additional ingredients needed here to test specifically example the wick quality and easement...thank you!
New sub here. Thank you for being straighted forward and lined out everything.I already have an LLC and seller permit do you think I can register my candle brand under the same LLC?
Im in North Cali, How did you set up a DBA? I got my seller's permit. and went on the website for my city but I just don't understand the DBA/registering business
How do you feel about other candle makers on tiktok naming their line just like yours? I saw fruitloops candles as "morning cartoons" by few sellers on tiktok🙂
Honestly I don’t even know if I was the first one to “come up with it” so I think it’s fair game as of right now lol! I have been looking into trademarking a few of my scent names though
Shocked that you are using such expensive shipping materials when there are so many more affordable options. Also, Pirateship is sooo much better than USPS
I have been starting my business very slowly with super limited funds. I was getting discouraged by this too. I started planning what I want and then using either Klarna, affirm, or PayPal's pay in 4 (I have used them all depending on supplier I'm buying from) to buy some supplies has worked very well. I can get more stuff at once and then I pay it off over that time that would have taken me to save up for all the stuff, buying one bit outright at a time. I hope that makes sense. Best of luck to you!

A lot! Testing alone is a fortune. I can tell when people say they started their candle business with $200-500 they did not test.
Gosh I couldn’t imagine only spending that much and then launching!
testing and reasearch mainly research cuz the testing has been done over and over by multiple people int this works
Say for the people in the back.

Love the video, well done.
Super detailed and you included a realistic view of startup costs contrary to some other creators.
I invested about 4,000 and that’s for all the legal stuff testing supplies, jars, wicks etc.

Can you touch on what made you go S Corp vs LLC? The whole thing CONFUSES THE HECK out of me when I'm doing my own online research 😂🥴.
That's what I was wondering. After all of my research I went with an LLC.
Loved this!

New sub here. Thank you for being straighted forward and lined out everything.I already have an LLC and seller permit do you think I can register my candle brand under the same LLC?
Thank you. I am from New York. Do I need to register the business?
in idaho a ABN Assumed Business Name (I think it is similar to a DBA) was 25$
This information is incredibly helpful and thought provoking and I appreciate you so much, but not gonna lie it’s giving me anxiety 😅😅😅
is it a bad thing or idea to buy candles wholesale already made on Etsy and resell them?
No it’s definitely not a bad idea! That’s what those are for :) I think it’s a great idea if you don’t want to have to make the candles yourself!
@@MemoryBoxCandleCo Thanks so much
@@MemoryBoxCandleCo what are good margins for this?

With these numbers your 36 candles would cost $50 each….

Not sure if you mentioned this but how many sizes would you start with? Would 1 be ok or no lol
1 is totally fine! I say 2 would be best to give options, but 1 is fine :)
