This is amazing and brings back a very special memory for me every time I hear this song. I apologize if this is boring to others. I was in the U.S. Navy for a long time, and in 2003, I was on a 9 month deployment to the Pacific region. We pulled into Perth-Freemantle, Australia for 4 days. We go to a bar (go figure) in Freemantle with hundreds of U.S. Sailors and Australians, partying hard. The live band began playing "American Pie", and the entire bar, everyone, began singing. Everyone on every floor and every room of the bar. The band stopped singing, kept playing the music and just sat back and watched it unfold. Played the song twice because of the reaction. It was awesome, a piece of home for the Americans, and all of the Australians knew it, singing along with us at the top of their lungs. I will never forget that. Thank you. You guys are awesome! And thank you Mr. McLean. Your creation is timeless, and brings joy to so many people!

Many older singers lose their full voice power but Don sounds great. Still smooth and the range is still there. He never did vocal gymnastics so he probably didn't strain it too much, but 40+ years performing is going to leave a mark somewhat on the vocal cords.

This is a treat. Home Free, thank you. The respect you show to the original artists is appreciated. I bet a lot of these artists never expected to be headlining a song with a group of young ones at this stage in their careers. Oh man the originals are so talented, they shame us for being young and lazy with the gifts God gave us. What makes me a lifelong fan of Home Free besides your talent as singers, musicians, comedians and actors, is the humble and respectful vibe you guys send out. @@sspaay Chance has been in the group for almost five years, he's not new. I agree that he's underrated; in my opinion, he's the best singer in the group (which is saying something, as they're all incredible).

@@sspaay He might be the newest but he’s far from “new”. He’s been with the group longer than Chris Rupp was after The Sing-Off.

HOME-FREAKING-RUN!!! This was sooooo good, and so much fun!! Chance was rockin' that first solo (great to hear him get the "chance" to shine), Tim was laying down an absolutely sick bass line, Adam was his usual mind-blowing percussion self, Rob and Austin were their typical awesome, the old-timey video clips were a fantastic touch....and THE MAN, Don McLean!! I can't get over how INCREDIBLE this is!!

Who the actual Hell gave this song a thumbs down???????? Normally, I hate when people mess with classics, but this is just beautiful!

Well, u just answered yr own question: Apparently u are more inclined to give a thumb down than up becuz "u hate when pple mess with classics", so some of yr fellow opinionaters just did what u by default do

That was beautiful! I love that Rob, Austin, Tim, and Chance all got to take a solo and extra kudos to Adam for his beat boxing!
