This is amazing and brings back a very special memory for me every time I hear this song. I apologize if this is boring to others. I was in the U.S. Navy for a long time, and in 2003, I was on a 9 month deployment to the Pacific region. We pulled into Perth-Freemantle, Australia for 4 days. We go to a bar (go figure) in Freemantle with hundreds of U.S. Sailors and Australians, partying hard. The live band began playing "American Pie", and the entire bar, everyone, began singing. Everyone on every floor and every room of the bar. The band stopped singing, kept playing the music and just sat back and watched it unfold. Played the song twice because of the reaction. It was awesome, a piece of home for the Americans, and all of the Australians knew it, singing along with us at the top of their lungs. I will never forget that. Thank you. You guys are awesome! And thank you Mr. McLean. Your creation is timeless, and brings joy to so many people!
Don McLean's voice still brings tears to my eyes for the loss of those legends and those times. Home Free brings their own gorgeous voices to this anthem. Very haunting, very beautiful, very sweet, and very sad. Thank you.

How did I just find this?! I’m weeping and smiling and just blown away at INCREDIBLE Don McLean sounds. Wow. What a wonderful tribute and truly perfect job Home Free did with this song. New Fan for LIFE. We need more of his. Just really needed this. Thank you Don McLean for allowing this incredibly talented group to enhance and pay tribute to your epic talent. ❤️
When you get to hear Chance, Austin, Rob and Tim just belt out in one song is nuts!! The harmonies are incredible! Don sounded wonderful! Adam is just in a league of his own with his beatboxing! Everything about this was OUTSTANDING!
I love Tim's range! He is an awesome bass singer, but in this song his voice is so clear and smooth in the higher, baritone range. Very great! Don McLean also sounds awesome as well!
And did you notice the super smooth hand off of the bass line from Tim to Chance and then back to Tim when he finished his lead section? Tim is a near illegally rare talent for sheer vocal range, but Chance is his near equal.
How awesome that they have Don McLean singing also!! I love how Home Free takes a classic, makes it their own yet keeps all of the "classic-ness" of the song. Each and everyone of them delivered perfection and what can you say about Adam Rupp... Damn guys!!!! Another fantastic one..... and today of all days....
This was mine and my son's anthem. We always sang it together when it came on the radio. He died 1999, God bless him. After he died I saw Don McLean in concert in Newcastle UK, music great. Thank you for the music. xxx
I’ve been around a long time, crying through Kennedy, Kennedy, and King. And I’ve seen the music die many times, from Patsy Cline and Buddy Holly early on, then Elvis, up to Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, Prince, David Bowie, and so many more. So grateful for recordings. Love this glorious rendition. Thanks Don. Thanks Home Free.
@@Krullespam I know when Buddy Holly, and Richie Valens died mate, Waylon Jennings was also supposed to be on that plane but he gave his seat up to Buddy Holly's bass player
When I heard Chris was leaving, years ago, I thought man he is going to be tough to replace. And he really wasn't replaced. Instead by God's blessing he gave us Adam Chance as an amazing addition to an already amazing group of talent. The fact that every member of this group could be successful as solo artist and yet they have chosen to bless us all as a group, is a wonderful surprise in a "me first" society. So much talent in the group that it probably should be criminal. :)
I'm 75 and have to say, this was so very awesome! Thank you for doing such a great rendition of one of the best songs ever recorded! I loved it! Don McLean has always been a favorite of mine and more recently, I've discovered Home Free....love you all!
I'm really enjoying Chances voice on your recent stuff. Man it sounds smooth. Austin and Rob are always solid rocks. Tim has changed it up a little showing off his upper register more. I love all your stuff man. What a great tribute to Don Mclean!
Wow....so wonderful to hear homage paid to Don McLean....nobody deserve it more. American Pie wasn't just a great rock song, it was an anthem. Yet another generation that see the timeless magic of this incredible song
This was absolutely fabulous!! Seeing Don McLean singing as well as he did way back in the day and all of the talented guys in Home Free singing with him was just the BEST!!! Absolute BEST!!! Love it!!!
This is now my favorite version of this song. I imagine that Don gets a bit tired of performing it the same way all the time, and this was probably a treat for him.I know it was for me.
Today is the 64th anniversary of the loss of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson. I love this version of this iconic song. Don McLean sounds, if anything, even better than he did in 1970!
Actually in my 5 years of practicing beatboxing, I actually found a technique on the Internet that some beatboxers do. It’s really hard for me to pull off because I’m still trying to do it, but you have to breathe in through your nose while beatboxing. I can promise you it’s really hard to get down
@@countrygamer9910 circular breathing. We also use it when playing an instrument. A dude and I that made all state band every year would always crack the director up on the first day "ok, everyone give me key of C, first note, hold it as long as you can." Me and my friend would still be going after a couple minutes until the director realized what we were doing and would laugh and declare "circular breathing is cheating!"
Apologies for correcting you, but it sort of tripped my OCD. It's McLean, not McClean. (It's an easy mistake to make, but it makes him sound like he's related to Mr. Clean! LOL!) And yeah, I absolutely loved this performance too. I've got goosebumps!
Absolutely fantastic. Don, although your song will live forever, that rendition with Home Free, will make that song go forward for generations and generations. Please don't explain the words. Oh, yes, it was very hard to dance to, but we made it work ...lol...
Whenever I think Home Free has reached their pinnacle in music, they just go and blow right through it. This is by far my new favorite song from you all - absolutely incredible. I never thought you'd make one I enjoyed more than dive bar saints
So many times in songs you forget hes there because it sounds like a instrument. So talented at what he does and the group would not be the same without him at all.
I'd argue against that. Tim and Adam are probably two of the most credited people in the group in my opinion, along with Austin as well. I'd say Chance gets the least credit because he isn't usually the lead singer, and the songs where he is the lead aren't as popular as most of their others. However my favourite part of this song was Chances verse, I think he killed it.
@@hyredavidnp the group was started by Adam and brother Chris who was with the group until about 3 years ago. Chance was a worthy replacement and some of their best songs are since he joined, although, they have some beautiful songs with Chris as baritone. They just keep getting better!
I was ten years old when this song came out... my sister told me it was about when the plane crash killed three great men of music. Later, as I grew older, and loved the song, and listened to it often, I still wondered about some of the meaning. FINALLY at age 58 now, this version has FINALLY made me understand the entire message of the song..... THANK YOU. Mr. McLean, I know you will NEVER see this comment, but thank you, this was and is one of the *GREATEST* songs ever written. Home Free, thank YOU for finally having it make sense to me.
@@janus9371 There isn't enough time and it would be like ten pages to explain. Besides, it is just what it means to me. It could mean something totally different to someone else. That is part of the beauty of the music, the lyrics, and the interpretation of them.
@@janus9371 I've begun a post dealing with the meaning of it all, and the background is part of it all too. I don't know if it's on this part, but I can assure you I'll finish it soon. I think about the age of Don McLean when he began to write this, also, he didn't write it all in one go. It seems to me there were so many things going on in his world at this time some of which may have had an effect on him. Remember he delivered newspapers every day, and would have read all the big stories as they happened,I consider this my jumping off point, so to speak, and I go from there. Hope this helps, but keep looking as I'll finish it quite soon. I'm sure there'll be plenty people who'll try to shoot my theory down, but hey when I'm finished I won't care what they say. It's going to be my essay, mine. Speak soon.
My husband and I went to The Villages in Fla to see him. He was awesome! Sounded like I always heard him before. What a legend. Put on a great show. I love Home Free but what an honor to get to sing with him huh?❤ 5:59
I was still in Southeast Asia when this song came out and I never have gotten tired of hearing it. Many of us can still remember where we were and how it helped mark our time in the history of music. 50s, 60s and 70s were the best decades of music.
I have NOTHING BUT LOVE FOR THIS!!!!! What a delightful surprise to discover that, not only is Don McLean still around, he continues to show off an impressive set of pipes!
Also born in 1956, Don McLean sang "Vincent" - also a classic. Loved it in high school, still love it!! Thank you for a great version, Home Free also rocks.
This has been one of my favorite songs, since was kid. Hearing Don MCLean sing this song with Home gave me goosebumps. This is my new favorite version of this song!

THAT was absolutely AWESOME!!!!!!!! This is the very best version of this song I have ever heard. Kudos to the guys for bringing Don into it to sing. That made this spectacular. Home Free you rock!!!!
Wow! I'm just blown away. Never thought this song should be covered, figured Don McLean did it best and no one else would ever come close to it. Well, I was wrong, but it took a Don McLean collaboration to do it. I love both the arrangement and performance, but also the tribute to Don. It just seems right that he's in the middle of this whole thing. Well done to everyone involved. I've already bought it and it will be on repeat for some time to come. Excellently well done.
Listening to Don McLean again giving tribute to the way things were and will never be again. Listening to Adam C. and Tim confirm again their huge range in voice. Hearing the lyrics clear like I have never heard them before. This was truly a spiritual moment, unexpected tears along with smiles of joy and old memories dusted off to enjoy a truly American Hymn of Passage. If music being listened to in the pickups of the 70s had an anthem, this would be it.
I cannot believe a) that they got Don McLean to sing with them, and b) how good this is! I normally don’t like covers, but this is almost as good as the original.
1972 7th grade , we listened and studied this song for 2 weeks . 25 years later at our class reunion we all sang this song a capella without lyrics or sheet music available , didnt miss a word .
What a nice tribute on the 62nd Anniversary of the day the music died. Rip Buddy Holly Ritchie Valens, J.P Richardson and Roger Peterson February 3rd 1959 ❤'
I'm older than ARPANET, and this is easily one of the best things I've seen on UA-cam. Flawless conception, arrangement, and execution. Just beautiful.
I've been to see him in a concert in a theatre in Edinburgh, Scotland. You could have heard a pin drop when he began to sing Vincent. The best I've ever heard . For the most part people only joined in the American Pie choruses . One part of Vincent, you'll all know that. People just sat and listened to the beauty of his voice and the words of every song.. Outstanding. Try to see him if you get the chance.

Don mclean's voice isn't 75, it's timeless. Love this song, love this rendition! Thank you for sharing your gifts with us 💜
Don McLean killed it. ❤ Again. Home Free= Awesomeness
I'd hope so. he's been singing this one since the late '70s.
Great to hear that he's still go such an excellent voice after all those years.
All of these artists have extraordinary talent but they share the spotlight so graciously. Amazing!
When you get to hear Chance, Austin, Rob and Tim just belt out in one song is nuts!! The harmonies are incredible! Don sounded wonderful! Adam is just in a league of his own with his beatboxing! Everything about this was OUTSTANDING!
Hello how are you doing 😍😍
I can't believe it. Every time I think they've hit their "high", Home Free comes in with another "out of the park" hit. Simply incredible.
I don't think they hit anything but a "out of the park" performance
I love Tim's range! He is an awesome bass singer, but in this song his voice is so clear and smooth in the higher, baritone range. Very great! Don McLean also sounds awesome as well!
I agree I thought Tim’s voice was so beautiful sounding. I usually praise Austin’s voice but wow Tim just shined on this song.
He looks awesome, too!
And did you notice the super smooth hand off of the bass line from Tim to Chance and then back to Tim when he finished his lead section?
Tim is a near illegally rare talent for sheer vocal range, but Chance is his near equal.
Respect Don Mc Lean
This will never get old. I bet this goes on playlists around the world. What a way to show respect.
The fact that they do this all acapella with minimal editing makes it all that much better. Best acapella group I know. Pentatonix got nothing on em.
Don McLean's voice has just gotten sweeter and smoother over the years.
I thought so too
Like Butta !!
Fine wine is this man's voice
Don't forget Rickie Nelson...
And John Lennon
@@aprilk467 nahhh!
And Tom Petty.
I just now realize David Bowie died that’s such a sad thing
In Lubbock today the Buddy Holly museum is remembering his death. So cool you released this song on the anniversary of the day the music died.
Were they singing this will be the day that we die?
Omg I grew up in Lubbock

When I heard Chris was leaving, years ago, I thought man he is going to be tough to replace. And he really wasn't replaced. Instead by God's blessing he gave us Adam Chance as an amazing addition to an already amazing group of talent. The fact that every member of this group could be successful as solo artist and yet they have chosen to bless us all as a group, is a wonderful surprise in a "me first" society. So much talent in the group that it probably should be criminal. :)

Absolutely marvelous rendition, and this had to be one of the last things that Mr. McClean did.
Hello how are you doing today 💕❤️
There are no words to describe the talent of each of these men, and of their collective work ... blown away.
Hello how are you doing??😍
Wow....so wonderful to hear homage paid to Don McLean....nobody deserve it more. American Pie wasn't just a great rock song, it was an anthem. Yet another generation that see the timeless magic of this incredible song
This was absolutely fabulous!! Seeing Don McLean singing as well as he did way back in the day and all of the talented guys in Home Free singing with him was just the BEST!!! Absolute BEST!!! Love it!!!
No no no. He can barely sing. Are you kidding?
This is now my favorite version of this song. I imagine that Don gets a bit tired of performing it the same way all the time, and this was probably a treat for him.I know it was for me.
No, he had three songs. So it was a rotation. His concerts lasted exactly 19 minutes. LOLOL
He suggested he wanted to bop the song up.
He needs to hook up with Weird Al!
Today is the 64th anniversary of the loss of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson. I love this version of this iconic song. Don McLean sounds, if anything, even better than he did in 1970!
Gotta say, props to Adam Rupp, this is a long song to do beats for. Absolutely amazing version of this song!! Everybody sounds so good!
A dude and I that made all state band every year would always crack the director up on the first day "ok, everyone give me key of C, first note, hold it as long as you can."
Me and my friend would still be going after a couple minutes until the director realized what we were doing and would laugh and declare "circular breathing is cheating!"
The Australian aborigines have used this technique for ever, you cannot play a didgeridoo otherwise!!!
Who is Adam Rupp?
@@foobarmaximus3506 Really?
At 75 years young, this song brings a lot of memories. Thanks Don McLean and this fantastic vocal group Home Free.
The video is everything. So amazing! Thank you Don McLean and Home Free for doing the full version. Just incredible! Love, love, love!!!
Apologies for correcting you, but it sort of tripped my OCD. It's McLean, not McClean. (It's an easy mistake to make, but it makes him sound like he's related to Mr. Clean! LOL!)
And yeah, I absolutely loved this performance too. I've got goosebumps!
Whats your vocal range?
Tim: Yes.
At this point i want to see him go against mitch in pentatonix...
depends on the length of his hair apparently
This made me laugh, so true.
@@itjamie9055 a better comparison would be Avi Kaplan, formerly of Pentatonix.

I feel as though Adam Rupp doesn't get enough credit/recognition for his beat boxing skills, credit where credit's due.
So many times in songs you forget hes there because it sounds like a instrument. So talented at what he does and the group would not be the same without him at all.
@@acbigal Literally! Wasn’t the group created by him and his brother, who’s no longer with them?
I'd argue against that. Tim and Adam are probably two of the most credited people in the group in my opinion, along with Austin as well. I'd say Chance gets the least credit because he isn't usually the lead singer, and the songs where he is the lead aren't as popular as most of their others. However my favourite part of this song was Chances verse, I think he killed it.
Adam Rupp is incredible!
@@hyredavidnp the group was started by Adam and brother Chris who was with the group until about 3 years ago. Chance was a worthy replacement and some of their best songs are since he joined, although, they have some beautiful songs with Chris as baritone. They just keep getting better!
Know this since 1972. Singing every word with you
I was ten years old when this song came out... my sister told me it was about when the plane crash killed three great men of music.
Would you care to enlighten those of us who have yet to realize what it's really about?
@@janus9371 There isn't enough time and it would be like ten pages to explain. Besides, it is just what it means to me. It could mean something totally different to someone else. That is part of the beauty of the music, the lyrics, and the interpretation of them.
@@LadyDragonsblood Fair enough. Thank you for the unexpectedly quick reply XD
@@janus9371 LOL---- I kinda live on YT.... it is my television!
Speak soon.
Chance in great voice! Loved this.
Hello how are you doing today??
Hello Pretty 💝
I'm speechless. I grew up with Don McLean's American Pie, and Don's still got it.
Still sounding amazing Don
Also born in 1956, Don McLean sang "Vincent" - also a classic. Loved it in high school, still love it!! Thank you for a great version, Home Free also rocks.
I'm constantly amazed by Tim's vocal range, absolutely mind blowing! And Don McLean hasn't lost a beat.
I absolutely love that new generations are being exposed to this and so many other great songs from my youth through Home Free. Thank you!
Hello how are you doing today??
Instead of Christmas Eve, today is Home Free Eve!! And with just as much anticipation as Christmas Eve. 😀😀🥰🥰

I'm 65 years old. This has always been my favorite song from Mr. McLean. So many good memories were had with this song playing. Thank you very much Mr. McLean. 🙂
Everyone is fabulous. Tim is exceptional, his range is unbelievable. I just love Home Free!!!!
Love ... love ... love this song! Don McLean still has his voice, too! Awww, the memories of 1972.

This is just a breathtakingly beautiful version ya’ll! Creative, dynamic, pure & full of emotion. All I can say is THANK YOU! ❤

I'm older than ARPANET, and this is easily one of the best things I've seen on UA-cam. Flawless conception, arrangement, and execution. Just beautiful.
I love how Don is featured prominently.
