    I think another thing worth noting is that John Schappert apparently had some sort of friendship with Iwata - he was the one to present DICE's Lifetime Achievement Award to the late Iwata, with Reggie accepting the award on his behalf, and spoke a bit on Iwata's impact and loss, stating that "my friendship, admiration, and respect for Iwata is so great." So there is more of a prior connection than initially appeared to be the case. Given the circumstances as well, maybe it's possible that Nintendo was partly moved to acquire Shiver as a favor to Schappert instead of seeing them wind up closed by Embracer Group? Of course there's other merit to owning Shiver, but it wouldn't be the first time Nintendo made such a purchase simply as a means of paying back an individual or organization who'd greatly benefited them. When the Seattle Mariners were on the brink of being moved to another city, Hiroshi Yamauchi made the call to acquire a majority stake in the team so they could remain in the area because he saw it as a way to give back to the area that'd allowed Nintendo to set up shop in the US. Nintendo's leadership may be fairly different now, but perhaps a similar philosophy is at play here.

      I believe this is a fairly common mentality among Japanese executives, they have a very collectivist culture over there so paying back people who've helped the company is not uncommon.

      Fantastic post - and I agree. I think those long-cultivated personal relationships are often at the heart of Nintendo's dealings.

      If I may... You might also look into past relationships with Nintendo and ArtX (now AMD) along with other topics I myself are very much interested in knowing more of. For example, why did Nintendo not simply buy Capcom and Atlus when these companies where in need of capital, or at least buy out Ip's that have had trying history on their platforms.
      I like how Nintendo see more potential in investing the actull people behind the sucessfull studios/developers rather than just buy a company.
      But then again why did they leave AMD for Nvidia? Was it bcoz the key people they trusted left the company or was it simply a security reason? These kind of questions are very interesting in my opinion.

    Before watching this it's my belief that Nintendo only bought Shiver to secure a steady stream of ports for the next console. Panic Button is also a studio known for Switch ports however Panic Button was not at risk of going under so there was no need to secure that studio.

      Finished watching. Haha, looks like we figured the same thing. Nintendo not only has to worry about its own games but it's console ecosystem and ensure third parties have an easier time with their new console.

      Not quite. More that they have a use for that foothold in the Western market, like recruits through Next Level Games. Company assets are very minimal to "secure" but it's a big problem even getting anybody to APPLY.
      Especially when in USA it's legal to profit and pirate games as long as it's not ON the market, like adSense and google just advertise for your Patreon. Then FTC comes to take Nintendo down if they actually HIRE somebody, who "learns to make emulators" on the "open" source community.
      Universities do the same thing, coming from Ivy League literally just means you used the libraries that are their private property and ONLY sellable in the brains of Ivy Legaue graduates. Come from community college and it's stolen IP to possess work skills. Gotta love capitaliSTS that Marx identified and invented a word for.

      Yea nintendo doesnt just acquire companies cuz they can. it's only if they see an opportunity to really. Monolith, nextlevel games, and now shiver were all companies that were prime time. Compared to alphadream or rare, despite their histories, there wasnt really an incentive to buy them (tho luckily from what i heard alphadream employees did get hired and microsoft did end up buying rare)

      Also, not mentioned as a premise, but porting games also means you have acquired at least some experience in developing for those genres. Another angle, then, could be that Shiver will be helping out with a fighting game or an open world game.

    I also find it interesting that their landing page says they focus on "original IP as well as big AAA titles"
    Seems the only console game they've developed so far is Scribblenauts Showdown (not an original IP, but a unique type of game for the series)
    Makes me wonder whether or not they have any original ideas in the pipeline and whether or not Nintendo will let them see them to completion or not.

    I definitely agree with you that they probably wanted this team because they wanted to increase support for potential ports to the switch. A lot of third party games were pretty big on the switch, specifically 'cozy' or more casual games, and that's something they likely want to keep going. This also can probably help them get bigger games onto the platform.
    Now, this is a very out-there possibility, but I also wonder if they might want to use this studio to port over their own games. Very specifically, I'm talking about games made for the next console being ported over to the switch as a cross-gen release. If the next console is at about ps4 pro levels of quality (which is a rough estimate but the best we have right now), then I think that a port is doable. This means that the team can focus on taking advantage of all the new tech without having to hold themselves back, like they've had to do for other cross-gen releases, but it would still be a cross-gen release. This would also make the difference between the two versions more noticeable, likely, which could act as a way to encourage sales for the next console.
    Anyways. I see lots of flaws with what I said, mostly about how the timeline of game development wouldn't really line up with this if they wanted to do cross-gen title(s), if they even wanted to do cross-gen titles, so I'm putting this idea in the category of 'interesting to think about and technically possible, but probably not true'.

    When visual entertainment is mentioned it includes movies and TV (in live-action and animation), but also can mean graphic novels (manga, comics, illustrated children’s books).

    Nintendo really is the king of gaming. Everyone else thinks the only way to make money is expanding their budgets, closing studios and bet everything on graphical fidelity.
    But Nintendo know that what’s important for games is fun. Not the amount of As your franchise has.

      Absolutely. Nintendo always focuses on the most important thing of all. The fun factor. Not how to make a system worthless by moving games to PC, not releasing one game a year like Sony, not having garbage nonsense woke shit like fat uglified woman because omg I'm today's world it's bad to enjoy a pretty girl... There’s kind of a bitter irony that the developers of Scribblenauts Showdown ended up being acquired by Nintendo but not 5th Cell, the original creators of Scribblenauts (as well as Drawn to Life). A good chunk of gaming in my youth was dedicated to both Super on the DS (as well as DtL: The Next Chapter) and Unlimited for the Wii U, so to see Shiver flaunt their mediocre Scribblenauts spinoff game on their website and get promoted to being a first party Nintendo developer makes me unreasonably sad.

    • @stripedrajang3571
      @stripedrajang3571 29 днів тому +2

      It's possible that Nintendo acquired them not for their developing games, but for their porting capabilities, which is why it is possible you're seeing it the wrong way.

    • @johnclark926
      @johnclark926 29 днів тому +1

      @@stripedrajang3571 I agree that Nintendo bought Shiver primarily for porting and not for their spinoff skill set, and I’ll also admit they’ll probably do some decent port work, but I’m still upset by the way things have worked out for very personal and silly reasons. 5th Cell went from being a compelling Nintendo-focused third party developer to a gutted company on its last breath, while Shiver went from being an unnoticed spinoff/port assistant developer to becoming a part of/an assistant to Nintendo’s first party. Neither Shiver nor 5th Cell are at fault here, as they were never in control of what’s happened to them, but I still feel that the fate of each company is deeply ironic especially given their relationships to Scribblenauts.

      Really? I disagree. I think that they are the best budget console company out there currently. I can get a switch lite right now for only $200, and that's without looking for any deals or anything- *and* it has a large library and fantastic games. For the price, it provides very good quality. I quite literally could not get a gaming device for cheaper than $200 right now, unless I know lots about computers and am willing to source and then build parts, which is a lot of effort, or if I want to get something low quality with a limited (probably retro) library. Even their basic switch is just $300, which is a pretty good price. I will give it to you that some of their accessories can get pricy. But really, compared to industry-wide pricing, Nintendo is very affordable.
