Harvesting a Small Pecan Orchard

  • We have a small orchard with about 90 trees that are about 20 years old. The outer trees succumb to squirrels so we harvest about 60 to 70 trees or so. We don't have any mechanical shakers or harvesters but we do our best with what we have. We look forward to investing in some small equipment in the future.

I'm glad it was helpful. Each year we try something different to try to be more efficient. Good luck with your harvest this year! Thank you for watching.

I manage our family farm with 30 pecan trees that my grandfather grafted over 50 years ago. I have those hand pickers with the wires and aluminum jaws that spread when you press it on the pecan. But also use the mower (set high) to mulch and blow leaf/twig matter out of the way while pulling a 36" BagaNut harvester. Our trees are way too big to self shake and so I let nature do its best and gather as they fall, using a 20' aluminum conduit with a hook for shaking outer branches. I also encourage people who see this video and have or are interested in having pecan trees to learn to graft. Very satisfying to your work start a new variety or propagate more of your favs!

Thank you for watching! I'm going to try out the BagaNut harvester this year as well. I'll post about that process.

We only have 7 large trees and I mow in circles under them blowing everything away. Then we do the flailing with bamboo poles, collect the nuts and circle mow again, then it's a few times a day, daily walk through. Don't think I could do it my way with 60 trees.
I do remember when they were young enough to climb and shake like you did.
At some point, you can't do it anymore. They shake you instead.

They are getting close shaking me! We do use those PVC poles to help "whack" at the branches to get the pecans to fall.

    It's raining pecans 🤭

Bamboo poles work better than PVC because they are much stiffer, much lighter and much longer. Your trees are gonna be too tall for that hand shaking.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to find some bamboo. The trees are definitely to large for me to shake now. Time to change up my method.

@@ProjectNineOaks I'd say you'll probably have to eventually find a cheap used shaker on the internet if you search. There seem to be alot of them. In the old days all they had were bamboo poles and they got the job done. And they had some pretty big groves.

Thank you for watching! Should be getting close to harvest this year. For just one tree probably not worth doing much but just harvesting what it drops for yourself.

New follower and subscriber. Interesting approach. We also have a small orchard younger than yours with 150 trees. Where are you guys located?

Thanks! This method has worked for us but we will likely evolving this as the trees get older. We are located in south Georgia.

What do you do with all of the discarded husks? we had two pecan trees and we would do the exact same thing, tarps, climbing and shaking. I had to laugh at your hard hat as well. Those pecans can be tough n the head.

Thanks for watching! I've used them for mulch or threw them in the woods.

Wow I love this. I want to also plant pecan nuts but my problem is where can I buy seeds. Thanks

I had to replace a few trees when I first started. I bought grafted trees. Contact your county extension agent, they should point you in the direction of a supplier and the right variety for your area.

Don’t plant from seeds. Buy a cultivar, at least two different varieties, and that will bare in 5-7 years. A seedling will not bare for at least 15-25 years and the quality will be iffy at best.

How much money do you make on 85 trees

    • @ProjectNineOaks
      @ProjectNineOaks  2 роки тому +1

That is a hard question to answer. The trees have their production cycles so some years are better than others. On good years I can make around $2k to $3.5k. If I had more time to market and sell them, I could make a little more. Not much profit on that total sales number though.
