Texas A & M has a one week Pecan course everybody in the Pecan business should take. People come from everywhere to take it.

Thank you for this video that popped up. It just so happens I've got a spare computerized treadmill --and a small pecan orchard of 13 pecans that I planted 15 years ago and abandoned the zinc/fertilizer maintenence on. My husband keeps it mowed beautifully. I visited the orchard for first time in 10 years. The Elliot trees are 35 ft tall.(several other varieties too). With the economy headed for serious inflation, there's much interest in returning to this nut trees hobby .Will be using your same setup. It's brilliant! Thank you again!

Thanks. I’m in the same boat. We have roughly 150 trees on 8 acres. Young orchard. We may have to try this. Thanks.

God bless your pecan-picking heart! You have just given me hope! (May have even saved my life, certainly the 200+ year old, private, only family owned -since 1803 - farm.) Thank you for taking the time to make and post this video! You and your family are an inspiration - literally! May your generosity come back to you 10-fold! Make that 1000-fold!!
One question, why not have a treadmill on the top feed as well?
Again, THANK YOU! (I'm now EXCITED as opposed to doubtful and fearful and it feels absolutely AMAZING!)

This was a super interesting video! I thought it was very clever how you re-purposed the treadmill and created a way to clear out the trash from your crop. Thanks for sharing!

Turn the treadmill around and incline it slightly towards the front (the lower end closer to your table). The nuts will still roll down to your table but the remaining trash will stay on the treadmill and get pushed off in the other direction. Otherwise, I love this contraption and am going to build one myself this year.

I had tried the holes when I was using a different set-up and it was getting clogged with the sticks a lot. The different set up had a lot of trash. I was thinking about trying it with this new set-up since the pecans are so much cleaner. Thanks for the suggestion!

Great video and set up, I did not realize pecan trees became so huge.. I am going to have to pay someone to move my younger pecan tree it is just a couple of feet from the house. I only have 2 and the second one has plenty of space around it.

This is kind of personal. My sister was looking for something about harvesting her hazelnut trees in Oregon and ran across your video. We were both very interested in the fact that you’re living in Bunkie, LA. Our parent lived in Bunkie from 1976 through 1991. My dad, Munson Burke, was born and raised in Cheneyville. My uncle, Emmett Burke also lived in Bunkie, probably for most of his life. I see you’re a little young to have known them, but maybe you know some older people who might have known them. I always run my blades on the highest setting on my mower to blow the leaves away.I still have to occasionally stop to clear the leaves. I have noticed if the grass is thick I sometimes have trouble getting down into it to get the native pecans. The heavier the basket the easier it grabs them. I have used a brick in each basket to add weight but then you have to deal with removing it each time you dump.

  • @markw303

way to go. i have same question about rating of the blower. would be nice to be able to adjust and maximize the air flow to blow out more dead and rotten nuts as well perhaps...

This is great, and I’m going to try something like this. I’m wondering what you do with the racked up sticks and limbs. I’m thinking they’d be great in the BBQ pit, or grinding them up for a pellet stove or generator. Good informational/instructional video. Thanks

Do you have plans/sizes for your chute and blower set up? What size of blower?

If possible use a " zero " turn lawnmower with your basket on front to prevent crushing a lot of your profits

I like your set up looks like it works good you should have your nuts roll off onto something with holes big enough for the nuts to go threw but not the sticks,
I have the smaller bag a nut pull behind its a mess seems like it picks up more leaves then nuts and for some reason wont pick up the smaller native pecans though

Chase - that is what I was thinking, the only thing I would add is a wire screen with holes that are slightly bigger than your biggest pecan, that would block bigger sticks and leaves, and maybe combine that with the blower that would blow the leaves off the screen but heavier nuts would fall through? (Sort of like a rock screen on a wash plant, if you ever watch Gold Rush)

thank you for your video. I have an 11 acre orchard and 73 trees. I am looking to use a set up similar to yours. I am not a farmer. Would you please tell me the size of squirrel cage fan you used. so i can get good air flow thru system.

It depends on which region of the US you travel. Most pronounce the word the former pronunciation, while Southerners pronounce it the latter.
