How do you compare the Sony a6400 and the Canon M6 mark II for both photography and video? These are two of the most popular beginner mirrorless cameras from Sony and Canon and they offer great value.
The a6400 is a fantastic aps-c camera from Sony and offers an outstanding value. The M6 MK II is the new king of aps-c mirrorless cameras from Canon.
There are some similarities and some significant differences, so I will cover the strengths and weaknesses of the #a6400 and the #m6mkii for both photography and video, and I discuss everything from body type, framerate and resolution, autofocus, lens options, audio features, and ergonomics.
I will also look at the #sony a6400 and the Canon M6mkii in terms of battery life, timelapse, viewfinder and streaming options and recording limit.
Finally I’ll tell you which option I think is best for different uses.

I was all set on the M6 but there’s no log profile in that of any kind. So if you’re like me and you need to shoot 4K and you need some kind of log profile for color grading in the sub $1000 range for cameras it looks to me like it’s the a6400. To me Sony and Canon are the only ones with acceptable auto focus so who are the other brands are out.

Hey man. Fantastic video, I really appreciate the in-depth comparison between both cameras. I am planning on upgrading from my older A-Mount A77II in the next month or so and have been eyeing the A6400/6600 because of the e-mount and ability to use with my G-Master glass from my A7III, but Canon has been doing some really cool things recently with their mirrorless cameras and firmware updates, and the canon color science is SO tempting. This review really helped make up my mind on the A6400, this B camera would be dedicated to video, and I think that unlimited record time and the ability to record while plugged in are a huge benefit for my situation. Thank you for doing a thorough comparison, this was crazy helpful!

    • @TechGearTalk

Hi Jesse. I'm super glad the video was helpful. I think with you having GM glass for your a7iii, the a6400 is a great choice. No really reason for you to spend the extra $ on the a6600. Let me know how it works out for you when you get it.

Great video as usual. I was planning to get a6400 but Sony dropped the price on a6100 to $598 and I pulled the trigger. And I am very happy with it. It has all the goodness of a6400 minus picture profile, which I would not have used anyway!

Very comprehensive review; answered all of my questions thanks, although I would have liked more commentary on the speed of autofocus between near and far objects (in the context of a setting such as that seen in this very review) when recording video. I need a cam mainly for streaming and I think the Sony wins it overall, especially as I may wish to either replace it with or additionally buy an A7SIII later-on. I was very surprised to hear that any camera at this level (i.e. the Canon) has a 30-minute limit for recording video.

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  3 роки тому

If your upgrade path is to an a7siii - definitely go with the Sony and start investing in lenses. Almost every single canon dslr/mirrorless camera has a recording limit.

Great video. I finally got the RP because: 1. Full Frame 2. Part of the R lineup = excellent quality, EVF and really nice ergonomics 3. Price was perfect with the 35mm. I use it primarily for photography and it feels so nice to use it and the image quality is only amazing. I don't care about the lower resolution on the LCD or the EVF - it's completely adequate and fine. My only issue with it is the battery but a second one will solve the problem. In my opinion a great camera for photography with latest technology for a very fair price and so far I really really love it.

To get an unbiased, visual comparison, a detailed explanation and definitive summary at the end was fantastic. You really helped me make an informed decision based on my shooting needs. Thank you for doing this video.

Tech Gear Talk I picked the Sony a6400 because I want a camera that can do the buttery smooth 120fps slow motion but can also deliver a great still image quality. I also based the decision on the lens availability.

I love your videos!!! You’re so helpful man! I’ve been researching a ton of cameras to be able to do video, photography, and live streaming well. The few questions I have because I’m leaning more towards the Canon M6 Mark ll.
With the adapter what all Canon glass can I use? Because my brother has a lot of lenses I can borrow.
When using the canon for live streaming does the Elgato Cam Link 4K bypass the 30 minute recording time limit? Everything on Elgato’s website says yes but Canon technical service say no. I want to be able to put it on the tripod behind my computer and not mess with it until an end of a stream a few hours later.
What lens is going to give me the best results as far Bokeh? I want to be able to live stream and have everything around me be blurry besides myself for the most part. I know that has to deal with things like aperture but I need to know what kind of lens would assist in that as well.
I know this is going take a good amount of your time if you even get a chance to respond. But if you could answer these questions because I trust your expertise in full detail and clarity. I wouldn’t mind donating to your PayPal to say thank you 🙏
    Sincerely,
    A Noob

Hi, glad the videos are helpful and thank you for the kind words.
      1. Yes, all glass will work
      2. Yes, you can stream for longer than 30 minutes (because you're not technically recording to the camera)
      3. You'll want something with a low aperture number (ex. Sigma 16mm f/1.4, or Sigma 30mm f/1.4, my favorite lens is the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8)
I hope these were helpful. Thank you for the donation offer 🙏

It depends a little on what you want to start with (as far as photography, video or streaming). You can start and learn about exposure, framing, etc. with a camera and a lens.
For video, If it were me, I would start with camera, lenses, support (tripod), microphone and lighting.
IMO the most important part is to shoot as much as possible. Watch a tutorial then go and try a bunch of times. Don't waste time watching 100 tutorials. Watch a 2-3 then go shoot 97 times! You don't learn by watching you learn by doing.
      Does this make sense?

Big thanks for your sensible and detailed camera comparisons!! Are there any stabilized prime lenses for the M6, like a ~20mm and ~50mm...?
Sony is annoying me. crap menus, no touch screen and I hate their JPEG processing. They blocked my upgrade path from the RX1 and the RX100V both.
Even though I have a load of Sony lenses and some older bodies, I'm thinking I'll buy this Canon camera, even though I'll have to buy lenses too...

    Lumix G9 + vario 12-60mm 3.5-5.6 lens = $1,450

Thanks for the amazing video. I too am still unsure what to buy. I see very strong points in both cameras, and fairly big drawbacks in both as well. The M6 is easier to use, and as a beginner that is a big draw. The color science is more natural and vibrant, but it lags in quality of video compared to the a6400. But the digital focus and stabilization seems to produce more stable video. The lenses are less universal, and it seems you’re a little stuck with canon lenses. The a6400 tops the cake with video, the sharpness is a huge advantage in my opinion, but the coloring isn’t quite as good, and it seems fairly complicated to navigate, even after studying the system. I am interested in photography and video, possibly starting a UA-cam channel soon, so I’m a little stumped. If I was only interested in photography OR video, then it seems like it would be an easier choice (M6 for photo, a6400 for video). Do you have any suggestions?

Nice review Sag and you do try to give as much info as possible, well done but...
Yoy can only know if a camera works for you is if you use it for a while.
Knowing the specs and abilities is very good (but in the end all nowday cameras are good) but deciding on that alone makes you miss.
I used the Sony6400 (still don't like Sonys, but that's me, they have good things and bad things like everyone else) the m6 ii and m50 .
Wanted to buy myself a small 2nd camera and a camera for my wife.
Out of the 3 I mentioned bought for my wife the m50 (it's her 1st camera and she's in her 50s 😀 it's the first time she showed interest in photography so I instantly bought her one...) I feel that out of the bunch of those 3 the m6 ii is best and would have bought it if it had a built-in viewfinder.
For myself (after watching and reading reviews) bought blindly the Fuji XT30 (something I never do) because it is small and I like the retro approach.
It was a mistake, that is not a camera for me , I don't care what reviews say it feels like a toy like flimsy camera, it's handling is awful, the "simulations" are nice but they are just picture profiles in the end, its output is somewhat overated (it's still a good camera but when returning to it from the R it just makes me sad(I bought the R after testing it and went mirrorless only to be able to use 10s of my vintage lenses) and their lenses are weak, yes I said weak, both in handling and build quality and in IQ (35 f1.4 and 56 f1.2 are the only ones I used that are good)
But all that is my problem.
Personal handling is the deciding factor in the end.
P.S: in a retrospective I wouldn't buy for myself any of those 4 cameras as a second one, if I didn't have the R I'd buy the RP as a 2nd one since in that price range its better then all mentioned and still small enough.

1080p is great with both - maybe slightly better on the m6ii. audio quality in camera is better on the a6400 (both with and without an external microphone - although I would recommend getting a mic regardless).

I dont want more camera than I can handle but I dont want to regret not getting the right camera. 2nd, if I go with the M50, would you suggest getting the kit lens or buying just the body and picking up the 11 mm lens for it? I love the wider crop of the 11 for sure but the kit lens may suffice too? Thanks again for what you are doing man, it is top shelf content and REALLY helpful!

Hi! Jumping in as an M50 user and an M fan in general. If money is in consideration, I say go for the M50 and use the money saved (from not getting the M6ii) to get other lenses. If you're vlogging, the swivel screen will also be better as it will not compete with a hotshoe mounted microphone. As for lenses, you can't go wrong with the 11-22mm for vlogging. The kit 15-45mm should be fine as well. But for the cinematic b-roll stuff, you will still probably consider primes like the Canon 22mm STM or EF 50STM and Sigma options.

@@HEYDJ Thanks for the feedback DJ! I was thinking the same thing, spend the extra $ that I save on glass. I can get the M50 body from Abe's of Maine for $450 and 11mm for around $299. So I was thinking about passing on the kit lens and putting that $ toward the 11mm. And you suggest those more expensive lenses for the cinematic footage eh? Is it their clarity or what makes them more cinematic?

Jumping in as well. The primes are "faster" (meaning winder aperture) so they create a shallow depth of field. I think if you only had the 11-22 - you could find that it's really wide. I always recommend getting a kit lens because of: ua-cam.com/video/z-x-d-K9Jfw/v-deo.html
There are very good primes: the 22mm that DJ suggested, the 32 f1.4, and sigma came out with three lenses 16,30,56 f/1.4 which are nice as well.
If you are going to shoot in 4K, you need the m6mkii. If you're going to shoot in 1080p, get the M50.
      Hope this was helpful.

@@TechGearTalk SO HELPFUL! I don't need 4k, no one needs to see this mug in 4k. So I'll stick to the m50. I'd love to have the wide angle option as well as the prime 22m. I'll start working on the wife to get the purchase approved 😆. Thanks again for everything Sagi! Looking forward to your next peice.

      Tech Gear Talk
I’m leaning towards the 90d as the upgrade only because I have all the EF and L glass. By the time I buy the view finder and lens mount, the M6MKII is more $ but it does have a few other features. But I’m really torn... thoughts?
Not sure canon will continue with the M mount, I could see them switching to RF on a M6MKIII. It doesn’t make sense investing in new mounts that only a few body’s support, IMO.

I plan to upgrade my canon M50, I like sony A6400 with kit lens, for video work, if I can only buy one or may be two extra lenses beside the sony kit lens, which lens would you suggest to buy? Sigma 16mm F1.4(cheaper but only for APS-C)? Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD Lens(cost more, but also may use for full frame sony camera body)?

Great review. Just ordered Sony alpha 6400 in Amazon prime day in India. Waiting for it. Hope I have made a good choice for recording my drum videos in my studio for UA-cam. 🙂

Which camera and lense combo would you recommend for image quality and sharpness, mainly using a 30mm prime lens for fishing photos with background blur, cheers

Hi there, both cameras would work. I would start with the kit lens because of: ua-cam.com/video/z-x-d-K9Jfw/v-deo.html once you realize what focal length you're using, you can pick between the 16 and the 30. Hope that helps Cameron. Thanks for being part of the channel!

I love your videos. One question, Do megapixels matter on these cameras? Like 24-32 respectively. I want to vlog while traveling and use it for photoshoots as well. Would megapixels matter much or is it about the lenses?

The lenses make a much bigger difference than the lenses. Thank you for the kind words. Hope thi was helpful!

@@TechGearTalk do you have a Lense you recommend to start? I want to vlog a lot. I’m still trying to decide which camera. It’s been the toughest decision lately. Which one would you say has better stabilization?
