I’ve been practicing bowls a lot recently, and when they get wobbly they collapse. Another problem is that I end up pulling the walls too far or something, and it folds.
Hopefully that might be of help for you: as soon as you are done with the clay distribution, use stiff ribs, at least in the outside of your bowl to do the shaping. Using a rib instead of your fingers or a sponge compresses the clay and stabilizes it. You also don't need any more water or slip, which would weaken the clay.
when you throw you need to remember after every pull to keep it centered. Just put your fingers on the top and use your other finger to center with its hard to explain I would have to show you.
I'm thankful for this video, because I started this pottery course recently and the teacher keeps trying to make me do the technique that he uses to throw, but when he goes to another student I just did what felt right for me and when he comes back it looks good. So this gives me confidence that I don't have to do it their way, because a bit like you I struggled, but it was more, I struggled to throw how he wanted me to.
Hi lobash, I just recently started throwing, and wanted to ask what type of clay do use or any that you can recommend? The clay I have has a lot of grout so after a while it eats into my hand lol. Thank you so much !
In this video I am using a b-mix, which is a mixture of porcelain and stoneware, so it's nice and smooth. Best clays for beginners are going to include grog as it gives the clay more strength. There are smooth stonewares available you can use depending on your location, I just wouldn't recommend porcelain. Porcelain is incredibly smooth, but very difficult to work with.
What are you talking about there is definitely a right and wrong way to do pottery. Your video shows that when you throw you are not keeping the piece center. There is a technique to keeping it center.
@@Excalibur5000 I can't tell if this is a troll comment or not. I'll respond like it's sincere. There is no single right way to do pottery. There are a myriad of ways to pull walls, knuckle, finger, palm, or even rib pulling. They follow the same basic idea of distributing clay but there is no single right way. I didn't perform a perfect pull so the piece got slightly off center. When a piece is this wide and thinned out, there is no technique to force it back into center. Collaring would crumple the piece and trying to apply pressure from the top would cause the walls to collapse. I hope you don't share these sentiments with others, especially if they are learning. You come off as arrogant and smug.
I’m struggling…I need to find a consistent way to do things. I’m hoping to do my pulls with the knuckle as you do but it throws the piece off center…any advice for knuckle pulling?
The best general pulling advice I can give, for both knuckle and finger pulling, is to really focus on controlling the positioning of your inside finger, and to let your outer knuckle match it. A lot of it comes down to practice and muscle memory, but making sure your inside hand is in the right spot can make it a lot easier to control your outside hand/knuckle
It's so true about things that finally click. Thankfully, we get to see lots of people online with their own methods, and we find the way that works for us. Even after making things for a while, I see a way someone does something, and that technique clicked as you say.
You definitely know what it takes to make a beautiful bowl!
tysm!
Exactly. There’s so many different ways to make pottery!
I’m still learning but mine flop:(

Easy?? I’ve heard nothing but “bowls are so hard” 😭
I want to do it as a hobby in the future.🙃

Your clay looks so easy to manipulate

Good Nice ❤
My problem is being able to make a bowl with a bottom. For some reason it’s always the bowls that lose their bottoms. Nothing else.
Off centered

Spiral wedging videos are the hardest to understand 💀
Beautiful big bowl
Beautiful bowl!
Why are you wearing a mask?
I have some autoimmune issues with my lungs, so I wear the mask to be extra safe around the clay dust.
Whats the mask for lol
@@tyleryoung9874 clay is dusty and I have lung issues. Helps prevent inhalation

How right you are. I watched my made bowls in the 70d and 80d my skills were lacking so I agree, be naturally and your going the right way.
Dang you are a really underrated youtuber! Keep the hard work up!
Much appreciated, thank you :)

i’ve been handbuilding for years now and just got my first wheel, needless to say i have a lot of learning to do 😅 - i’m excited for it, though!! 😊
You will love throwing, even if it may be frustrating at first.
Gorgeous!
"PromoSM" 😓
Nice commentary man
Exactly!! I learned off of watching others on UA-cam too and I feel like I don’t throw like any of them. I found the way that works for me
Yep, you kind of just become an amalgam of whatever methods work
U got a nice voice
Thank you for both the comments :)
