Yesss! This is a game changer. I remember my old GM trucks having a light under hood. Thanks for the video
Love this channel. Not only because I too have an AT4, but because you make such thorough install videos that even someone like me can (and has) follow and complete. Thank you!
That’s great! Big part of why I make them. Spread the good word 👍🏼 I would be doing these things with or without UA-cam, so I am happy some people tune in 🙏🏻
Are you "The Out Law Josie Wales"? I am a Out Law with my Ex's family, Ha Ha..
Just wanted to say thanks for putting this video together. Not a difficult install, but always nice to know exactly what is involved and where to place everything. Liked and subscribed!
Awesome! Glad to have you
Neat. I just use a metal LED touch lamp with a magnetic back and keep it under the hood (away from the heat). It is the size of a hockey puck...so, many Canadians will be able to judge the size. 😂
Love the Mother -In-Law at the end! Priceless!
Had a TRUCK that had a under hood light pod with a long wire that when you were done you turned a knob to roll up the lights wire. GMC - yep. 95 Sierra had one.
Just found one on eBay.
Wow that turned out slick ! I guess GM thinks we only open the hood during the day lol.
Just installed with this video took me about 10min! Plus following the link I got the kit for 14.99 in the states.
This is just the vid I needed to "brighten" my weekend. By the way under hood lights go way further back than the nineties. Yes I'm quite old. You are the man!
Just got a new truck this weekend and keep coming across your vids on mods. Killed me with the MIL comment as mine just moved in last month and it’s been a struggle to say the least!! Keep the mods coming
Had just seen the video on the oil catch can and mention how they forgot to put light on the hood. Need to do this on my truck as well! Great stuff Don!
They don’t even put lights in the glove boxes now and they need to start doing that again
Sweet idea, I wouldn't have thought of that without your channel. Just installed mine today
Glad I could help
Saw this on your other video with the Z-Innovations heated wheel...so I hunted down this video. I am for sure doing this on my Yukon.
It comes in handy. The switch it comes with is not good quality. The idea is what matters
@DonsLife did you replace the switch with something better?
I did in another video. Better is not the right term though. Longer lasting maybe
@@Donslife got a link?
Will be adding this to my truck this spring!
Crazy my 1977 Silverado had under hood / glove box / under dashboard/ lower inside door panels for exit and a red door opening caution lite...with all the led technology and they dont light everything up for $ 64, 000. Truck , Even my tail gate turned on lites when opened now you must use key fob or dash panel switch
..and it's only on for a short time when using the fob... My 5000.00 1977 Silverado had all that"
Don; I installed the same kit, exactly as you have yours, but I added a waterproof Push Button on the Insulator Pad for when the Truck needs service and then I am able to shut off the LED switch. Pack of 5 Push Button Switches for $8.00 US. Push Button is Black and Black Rubber coated cover.
Where can I get the push button you speak of? Thanks in advance.
Great idea, I'm going to have to pick one up. Only thing is, it needs an off switch so if you take it to the dealership or a mechanic you can turn it off. So when they have the hood open for hours at a time it's not going to kill the battery. So I guess you can just pull the fuse or unplug the switch. Great idea though. I think my mom's 79 trans am had one I'm not too sure. I remember a car growing up that had a light but it was not very bright.
Got mine ordered for my 21 Silverado. Thank you for the videos!
Anytime!
I noticed from another reviewer of a very similar product on Amazon that the inline fuse is on the wrong lead. The fuse should be on the positive (+) lead, NOT the negative (-). The way it is wired now could possibly lead to a dangerous situation. I like the product and having a light under the hood, but when I install mine, I'm going to rewire it so that the fuse is on the positive lead. Thanks so much for all your videos. I have really enjoyed them.
Easy adjustment! Glad you like them
Don, did you rewire your in-line fuse? I just picked up this LED strip and was going to install.
Could also add a switch to turn it off if need be. Very nice work man!
Just installed this same kit on my 2024 GMC elevation.
Simple but effective, except for the junky switches
@@Donslife Ya it doesn't always come on. I have to wiggle the switch.
I’m thinking about adding this and just running a switch right next to the hood release inside the truck as I hear the push button will just rust away.
Great idea!
I feel like with enough heat from the engine bay on a hot day. The glue might give way and the light will fall off.
Maybe. I thought of that. If it falls it will land in a safe place
Doing this! Excellent tutorial! Cheers mate!
Just added to my AT4HD great add on. But the hood pin tends to disconnect. I may just switch to a toggle switch.
did it on my 2019 ram.used my"gangswitch" to turn it on and off👍👍
Nice i
Man that's a perfect under hood set up, speaking of lighting, if your game would you mind making a video on in-cab lighting like for the footwells, you seem to have some really good ideas.
Sure I will consider it. 🤔
Just got one on Cyber Monday for $11.91 👍
I’m doing this on my Trail Boss but even more LED strips
👍🏼 nice
Fantastic I wish you lived in Manitoba I could hire you do all my upgrades to my Denali I’m not much of a auto technician Great Video’s you put out 👍✌️🇨🇦
I will be in the Peg in August 😂
it is amazing how you come up with these ideas 👍🏻
Don, thanks again for sharing an AWESOME mod brother👍🏽I'm definitely gonna add this under my hood.
Thanks for watching! A good tip is to use some dielectric grease if you use that same switch
This is one of my favorite channels! After watching this video, I installed the same under hood light on my 2019 Sierra. After watching one of your later videos it appears that the hood pin does not hold up well over time. Have you found a more durable replacement?
I didn't read any of the posts and I know I'm missing out but I was wondering the same thing. Why didn't they keep on with the engine bay light.!? All cars could have it as a kida and now it seems not to even have a connection to the wiring harness.? I'm confused. 😮😢
It must be a costs savings or an oversight.
Thanks Don for those instructions..
You are very welcome
Sweet mod, thanks for the video!
I’m gonna need this mod in my life. I can’t stand not having an under hood light.
I DRIVE a FORD. I need NO underhood light.
@@SpicyRok7482 you wouldn’t know what you were looking at if you had a light.
@@LPCliftonMusic That is CORRECT Sir.
No need to know the names of the parts if they never break.
@@SpicyRok7482 🤣🤣🤣 That is a delusional statement if there ever was one. Ford’s quality issues are well known so you’re either ill informed or delusional about reality.
Hey I just bought a 2020 gmc at4 noticed the hood gets extremely hot but temperature is fine. Is this something you’ve heard being common?
What was the measurement of height for the hood switch?
Well this was a better series to show a good connection and lite for the under the hood DIY and was very help , going to do the same thanks ?
Thanks for watching. The switches are junky but otherwise it’s good, effective and cheap
I didn't see the fuse on your install, but I see it in the kit.
Great video and that is one hell of a beautiful truck
Thanks 👍
Can this be hooked up to the auxbeam so the led can be turned on at night only
Sure, but you could avoid putting in the hood pin switch too if you are going to use the auxbeam as a switch
@@Donslife thanks for the quick reply. Love your videos. Definitely inspiring me to do some mods to my Sierra.
I just ordered my from the jungle site thanks for showing this light on you channel
Amazon = Jungle 😂
Is there a high quality brand that you would recomend? The one i got is crappy lol. Switch doesnt work great
Nope. Anything remotely like this seems to be lacking in the switch department
Any update how this has held up? Looks great.
Yep - This video :

Will be interesting to see how well the adhesive tape holds up when Mom Nature rolls in with -40 degree temps in a few months.
Yes it will. We had -32 a week and a half ago for a couple overnights and I was under there today and the adhesive seems okay
How has it held up with the engine heat?
Just fine
@Donslife Thanks for the reply. I'm going to add one to my truck but wanted to know that first.
Hello I can not seem to get the link for the under the hood light you installed I want to get one can you send me the product info for the light you used
Under Hood Light Kit : amzn.to/3brYkOh There seem to be many identical versions marketed as various brands. Almost everything I have installed is linked in the video descriptions too
@@Donslife thanks for the information I got one on the way
What size wire loom are you using here?
1/4” I think
Thank you
What size split wire loom did you use? By the way, excellent video. This looks like the ticket. Thanks
3/8 or 1/4. Not certain. I have a bin full of various sizes
Nice installation! Out of curiosity, what is the quick disconnect to the left of the battery (with a red cap on it) used for?
For my 8 gang accessory switch. It’s a 60A breaker
@@Donslife Thank you sir!
What Amazon light did you get
I left a link in the video description for you
Great video can you add links to the product you used

@@Donslife thanks Don i actually have a 21 sierra at4 2500 but your content is so good i have subscribed and love your videos
Amazing! Thanks for the support
Its in the video description
I think I noticed in one of your newer videos the on-off plunger is at the front of the engine bay, is that the case? And why?
Not sure what you saw or are referring to? Sorry
Does it still work after a whole year?
Yes
Amazing how such a logical feature, that's been around for years, could be omitted by the engineers. Additionally, the same could be said for courtesy lights under the dash. LED dome lights are nice, but don't really put the light where you need it. Next mod on my list.
Probably because they went bad and drained the battery. My dad worked for GM. For 30yrs. He use to removed that light and that was his reasoning from info he got from the engineers
Interesting
I ordered this and got it yesterday but didn’t work, there’s no power to the LED strip, I checked fuse and cable for any defects but all ok
What can be the problem ?
Sounds like a defective unit. I would contact the seller for a replacement. They are pretty cheap quality
Hopefully the heat from the engine in the summer time doesn't cause the adhesive to let go.
It hasn’t yet
Can we get a 15k mile update on it? Engine bay heat makes me worry about it and also it falling into a pully

Hey Don! GREAT IDEA! I'm using your link so you get a few cents for my purchase! Which wire lump are you using? Your's seem smaller in diameter which is what I want...Thanks!!!
Cool. The wire loom I had I think is 3/8”.
@@Donslife Thank you! I'm glad I asked! I had 1/4" in my cart!
1/4” would be fine too
Very nice over $20000 truck or $32000 truck, should it came one?
At the 0:45 mark, is that an after market air intake?

Now I know why my mother in-law moved in 9 months ago,,, I will get this ASAP
Ah, you caught that! 😂
The only odd thing is the fuse is on the negative side. I'm just connecting to a fused supply as well, in the event of a dead short - don't like the sparky stuff.
Fair lol
@@Donslife Yours looks to be a 1/2 ton variant, mine is a 3/4 ton and the rear mount location is too low, but GM also put a forward mounting point that works perfectly - I just got mine installed and no drilling or reaming required.
Why not install the positive wire after the fuse? GM puts 3 or 4 bolts on the other side of the + terminal for accessories. Usually has 1 or 2 free bolts for aftermarket stuff. Just gotta buy a bolt.
The included wiring has an inline fuse, but you could do that too if you wanted.
Hey Don…I installed this light a few months ago and it worked fine. However right now it’s not working. I remember you saying there was something with the switch and you replaced it. Do you recall what switch you got and where you got it from? Thanks!
I haven’t replaced the switch yet, but I knew it was the weak link. The contacts get corroded. Just twist the pin back and forth so it scuff the contacts a bit. It will probably work. When I update the pin switch, I will link it here.
@@Donslife Thank you Don for the quick reply! I’ll try that! If it works I might spray some contact spray on it to minimize corrosion.
Awesome
Are your headlights stock, mod, or aftermarket?
Stock 100%. I added dark tint to the sides
How’s that Led working up to today ? Never had so much faith in chinese product , but i might have to do the same if it’s reliable enough..
Still works. The hood pin is on the cheaper side is all
I most definitely do not want my Mother in Law to live with me 😂
Someone made it all the way to the end of the video 😃
*I got a Toyota so no need for this! Our trucks never break!*
If a Toyota was rated to tow what I need to, It would be a serious consideration
All cars had an under the hood light as a standard option
The good old days
I think a fuse would be a good idea.
And the glove box, no lights in there either
True
BUYERS BEWARE...I bought the kit and had to return it for a replacement. The sticky tape did not work on both occasions.
Mine is the original tape and I only made sure to clean the surface really well. 🤷🏻♂️
I hear ya brother....I cleaned the surface with an alcohol wipe. It it seemed the tape was too weak to grab hold.
I repurposed the kit and clamp it above my work bench.
No underhood and no glovebox lighting...cheaping out
You going too Pay for that Mother In-law remark?
How do you know I don’t already? 😂
They wouldn't want to do something smart like that it would raise the price of their over priced vehicles by $10.
