The last time I went Cod fishing it was January and we went out of Montauk point for a 3 hour ride out to the grounds. In 120 feet of water we were dropping 10-12 ounce jigs and I could swear I was feeling the jig bounce off fish as it neared the bottom. Seldom did I bounce the jig off the bottom more than once to hook a nice 3-6 pound Cod. I was actually wearing myself out reeling them up and finally had to stop fishing after I had 2 dozen in my pot. There were a number of mates that I knew from the party boats out of Captree and they were filling those huge 50 gallon coolers till they were overflowing with Cod. These are great eating but honestly I enjoy the fluke fishing more. Congrats on the 4 keeper limit, I remember the days when we were limited to 1 or 2 and it was just miserable. Thanks for keeping those memories alive John, tight lines !
John Skinner: just finished your latest book. By far the best fishing book I've read since the late Milt Rosko's 'Fishing the Big Four' published in 2001. Well written, very informative and a very easy read. You owe it to yourself to get some more publicity for it. This is a jewel for the angling community. Keep up the excellent work!
I finally decided to give this method a try and bought one of your dark matter rods. Ended up needing 6oz where I was fishing and had a 22.5 inch fluke inhale that 6oz bucktail with a 6inch blue Fuze grub. It was awesome
Hi John, I found a 31ft Ocean Master center console for sale. It has a casting platform in the bow so its not like ricks boat with the flat deck forward. Was wondering if you are familiar with these boats and if you would be comfortable going to the block island grounds in it from greenport?
Joined, TY! What was your drift speed? I could never catch fluke without a good drift. Great job and video! I want your life John! I cant wait to be able to fish and not work!!!!
Lower to the water so the camera is lower to the water which makes better video. When trolling with the trolling motor it's the worst spot on the boat because you're last in line.
I live in Shirley Long Island and I watch the videos all the time. It doesn’t matter where I am on the boat the fish never find me. I’m sure they would love to have me on the boat just to increase their bag limit 😂
I wonder if you know I heard our governor is allowing pursuing In state waters. If so we need to fight against it The stripe bass fishery depends on it. Hope I am Wrong But if i'm not we need to get the word out
Cod was once so plentiful in New England that legend had it you could walk across the local waters by stepping on the backs of the fish. In really warm years, every female cod produces fewer babies than we would expect, and we also see that the young fish are less likely to survive and become adults. And they're still are those who debunk Global Warming. SMH

Figured it was sea bass from rod holder...those big fluke don't catch themselves....LOL
Beauty Cod wow!

Hey thanks so much for that! The books take a lot of work and thought and it means a lot when the finished product is appreciated!
Great combo fishing, John!
Fluke and Cod, what a great day of fishing!
Great eating fish
.I've only ate them frozen. Can't imagine fresh. Great trip
I would love to catch a Cod! On my bucket list. Great stuff as always
Nice work John
Way to go men, going out for Chinook on the west coast in Oregon this afternoon.

Awesome! Thanks for your support and sharing that!
rodney with the double sea bass!
Hey Skinner, I really liked this combo of fluke and cod jigging. We did this in July, fishing vineyard sound but we couldn’t keep the cod .
Rick don't mess around he puts you on the fish.
I refer to them as slow pitch jigs mr skinner, very good bait for sea bass and deep water species like tilefish
Good to know cod hit them too! Awesome video! My friends dad fishes with you and Rick sometimes, I’d love to make the trip up there sometime!
Or maybe Rick and jigging jerks, I don’t know if he’s fished with you onboard
ahhhhh New Yorkers, gutta love em y’all

I just looked at one online to see the hull. That would be no problem under reasonable conditions.
thanks for the reply. what speed is needed to make the round trip to block island reasonable?@@JohnSkinnerFishing
It's 45 miles from Greenport, so it would be nice to be able to go 30mph.
ok thanks@@JohnSkinnerFishing
Mr skinner I was watching Mr Rick jig his rod is he really putting action on buck tail by this method
Do you usually use a swivel or knot to connect the main and lead line
swivel
Your friends have some very impressive boats, John. Nice technique for jigging Cod, oh, they taste good fried up!
So good eating.
John I have a question how do you know your in federal waters and have to switch limits
What do you do with all that fluke?
Are you in the hampton roads area? I see windmills
Block Island, RI
Hey Mr Skinner do you know of any fishermen in the southeast ? NC
Were you fluking off block island or Montauk ?
Joined, TY! What was your drift speed? I could never catch fluke without a good drift. Great job and video! I want your life John! I cant wait to be able to fish and not work!!!!
Roughly .7-1.0 mph. No trolling motor this trip, but lately we're on it a lot.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Just purchased your book, can't wait to get it, TY!
That style of jigging is called squidding the jig.
Hey John, when you're jigging for cod are you looking for structure?
Rock piles apparently. It was Jonathan's doing.
Thats why I let them eat an extra second or two john I haven't dropped one since I started doing that
Def want to to try jigging for cod. What type of knot did you use to tie to the shimano jig?
Clinch.
They are all upsidedown...?
Nice job, Surprised you like cod more than fluke or seabass.
Another great video is there a reason why you only fish at the back of the boat?
That’s where all the fish are.
Lower to the water so the camera is lower to the water which makes better video. When trolling with the trolling motor it's the worst spot on the boat because you're last in line.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing it’s the only reason I can think of why he catches so many fish.

@@ajmmetzger most days me too.
Why do people call it codfish and not just cod?
Depends on where you’re from I guess
Bluefish, tuna fish blackfish swordfish.ect.ect.
Any precautions necessary or recommend when looking for worms in cod this time of year?
Nothing wrong with a few nematodes. Pick out the ones you find before cooking, the rest are harmless after they're cooked. Enjoy
how deep was the water and at what temp?
80 ft on fluke, 100 on cod, 68 degrees.
john great video .. any chance we can get a filet lesson video ?
can you catch cod from shore?
No. They're well off the beach.
Are you drifting for those Cod ? Nice work, thanks.
Drifting
Fire up the grill and the fryer!!
Mr. Skinner. You need to teach the people of class on Hilton head fish, so that you can fish, right

Im heading out right now, seen the number of likes was 777, so i made it 778! Wish me luck!!
I just read that in Sept. Gulp is coming out with 'Saltwater Gulp'... never knew that what I was using was meant solely for Freshwater. MMmmmmmm
Saltwater Gulp has been around for several years. I pay no attention to whether they label it saltwater or not. It all seems the same to me.
