  • Shore fishing for Bass and Flounder is a British winter tradition. Finding some sheltered shore fishing in winter can really keep the love for angling alive during the dark and rainy months. Here I fish a new shore mark in an estuary targeting Flounder and Bass. I explain the rigs and baits I use and show how to unhook a deep hooked flatfish.
    Here are links to some of the tackle I used in this video. I hope it helps.

    I noticed right away the Poppy you are wearing and want to thank you for honoring Veterans. I am a veteran of the USAF. I was on active duty from Apr. 1973 through May 1982. My husband is also a veteran of the USAF. I read in a comment previous to mine that you are a veteran as well. Thank you for your service. In Ontario, we go stark staring berserk when we get a sunny day in winter. We fling off our coats and pounce around saying " Real warm, eh?". We sit at downtown restaurant patios, snacking, drinking beer. And wearing big sunglasses. Getting sunburned.

    It must be very reassuring for newcomers to see that even experts have off days. If you're waiting for cold weather to stop those crabs you may well have a long wait! Way back (in the 1950s and 1960s) we used to fish for flounder further up the river using course fishing tackle with floats, very successfully. Perhaps there were more about then. Flounder is one of the best eating fish there is. Looking forward to the next episode, so pleased that you found your knife.

    many thanks from the US, been watching your videos and it has really help so much, from making a rig to tying baits and fishing on the surf, the knowledge you shared is very useful especially when you described certain species of their habitats and water condition, when i first started fishing i had no idea of how to even look for a fish always thought it was just throw a line in the water and hopefully a fish bite but as i watch videos and learn i notice that fisherman can target certain species just from their fishing banks location.

    Out in our area we used to catch loads of starry flounder i think its one of the best eating fish out there. But around 1990 they seamed to disappear. So did the rag worms,which we call pile worms i remember stopping on the way to our favorite and digging them out of the peat and mud flats. They disappeared around the same time. I was talking to a friend who still goes to our spot and he has actually caught a couple flounder recently so i hope they are makin their way back. Ive been told that pollution is the culprit. We got to do better with our byproducts then dumping them into our waterways.

    The flatties sure love the movement of maddies. Unusual for a one-eyed fish. Some of the locals around here always have good advice for the estuary for those who need it. We have to go upriver as the current here is monstrous on the flood tide and very dangerous (second fastest incoming tide in Britain), goes from sand to mud/sand banks. Good flounder caught when the frost comes, as you well said. All the best to you and family bud and tight lines.

    good job on demonstrating the flat fish hook removal- you can also use fine straight forceps. I don't agree that a deeply hooked hook will dissolve though. I left a kamasan b490 in my prawn tank for a year and it was perfectly fine 12 months on. I suspect all deeply hooked flatties die - but nearly all can be saved by the under-the-gill method. this should be demo'd in the fishing mags more often.

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  Рік тому

      All you need is for the barb to rust away. Which is less than a mm. I have tested it also with hooks off the side of the pontoon. And in a matter of a week the hook was barely there. No point and no barb. That’s why I do not advocate stainless hooks.

    1982, after my Fathers funeral I went with just a hand line and a couple of prawns to a wharf at Lake Macquarie. Just miserable I was and not fishing seriously. I hooked a fish and was lifting the biggest flounder I had ever seen to the wharf. The fish dropped off, I felt so frustrated and threw the line back in the water. The hook I was using was a small silver hook, very shiny as it went back into the water that same flounder came back up, grabbed the hook and I caught him. It was 16” long.

    Another great video John...good to see you found yr knife (best catch of the sesh) lol... i used to use the disgorger that has the notch in the end, and it worked fine if you were careful...and i have seen some absolute idiots yanking at the line and just ripping the hook out ..not a care in the world for the fish...and the same with maceral...just yanking the hooks out of the fish...personally i wouldn't give these sort the time of day... so its clear you take the welfare of the fish into consideration, well done a good video showing how you should fish...all the best to you and yours...GL&HH Gordon

    Great Video! Love this kind of content. Always learning new tricks and tactics. Since the crabs are such, a pain would benefit to have some small hoochies or moppets on the lines above the hooks so at least there is something that could still trigger a bite? Cheers as always!

    Thanks John for another interesting video. Some of those crabs could have gone back as bait haha! Nothing worse than crabs eating everything insight . Like you say it’s just finding the time to go dig your own bait. I like that you have reminded anglers to be aware of incoming tides etc. I saw a guy being rescued a few years ago because the tide had surrounded him on the rock that he was fishing from!! Take care mate all the best. Graham🎣🎣🎣🎣

    What you said about digging bait as the tide went out then fishing the same area as you come back with the flooding tide usually works pretty well, I've done similar on the local beach after getting rag n lug out of small rocky gravel patches I always caught a couple wrasse or huss as it went dark.
