I read in a interview that Amy Lee only used Lithium as a metaphor and hasn't taken it, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 12 and lithium was the first drug they gave me and at age 33 I still take it, its haunting how accurately she described how it can feel at times, for the record, some people have bad experiences with lithium, it definitely has its pros and cons, but for me it changed my life and the good far out weighs the bad...
Yeah, she really nailed the physical effects of lithium, but also I feel like she described bipolar pretty well (at least for me). I swore for the longest time that she was actually talking about lithium.
I think the song talking about people who looking for happiness but in a negative way, even Amy Lee's makeup and the pale face in the video represent a consumed and weak person who took a lot of drugs
The song is about a bad relationship, that she can't escape, although she is everything but happy in it. Lithium is a metaphor for this, the numbness that this drugs provide describes also her helplessness in that relationship, can't with it, can't without. "Darling I forgive you after all, everything is better than to be alone and at the end I guess I had to fall, always find my place among the ashes" describes it pretty well..
I thought she said it was a metaphor about the dark part inside herself she uses to stay creative. And that she prefer being sad so she can still be creative rather than being happy and not be able to write songs (something lots of artists says like Adele or Amy Winehouse, that their sadness is the reason why they're creative and without that, they wouldn't be the artists that they are). The lyrics that you've quoted can also be sung to herself (if you use the pov I described)
Evanescence is goth, its a darker, sadder side of rock. Her voice is so suited to the genre because you can hear her pain. Another good band in this genre is Within Temptation, listen to their song The Howling. Apocalyptica is another one. Their song Not Strong Enough is a good one.
Lithium is a drug that stabilizes your emotions and is used mainly in treating bipolar disorder. However it doesnt just remove your bad emotions , its numbs ALL emotions (joy and happiness etc) witch give alot of people a hate/love relation to it . ”Dont want to forget how it feels without lithium” ”i want to stay inlove with my sorrow” Great reaction as always , much love from Sweden 👌🏻
Linkin Park and Evanescence are my ultimate groups since I was 15 (now I'm 32 already). And I never got tired of them! They are so so grate! There's no one another one group like them.
She is singing about the difficulty of needing lithium, a medication for bipolar disorder, which is much needed but which numbs the most basic emotions of those who use it. "Lithium, don't wanna lock me up inside . Lithium, don't wanna forget how it feels without... I want to stay in love with my sorrow"
This was a song that came out when I was in college and taking Lithium for bipolar. It has meaning for me, unlike most "decrypters" of the lyrics I think she was describing her experience while being prescribed lithium. Very accurate to how I felt on it at the time.
Her voice is so captivating, it lures me in then the power just wraps me up in the song. all I ever ask is that an artist move me...she does. Can't wait for Evanescence/Halestorm concert!
Amy Lee can turn any song into a haunting sound! You should check out her cover of U2’s With or without you! But I love all of her songs, new and old! Oh and check out Use My Voice!
I’m not sure if another commentor has mentioned this but the meaning of the song has a lot to do with her creative process. It’s about being in love with that darkness that’s strange low that lens so well to creativity especially when you’re writing music that is so personal and so emotive. Innoway it’s her speaking to her self. Almost like breaking up with that dark side we all have. But as with most of her music and the way she writes it is supposed to be interpreted in multiple ways making it more consumable.Lithium is only a metaphor since she’s never been on the drug but it’s that idea of being numb to it all and how she doesn’t want to live without the darkness the sorrow which has created such a beautiful elegant sound for her. In the end she chose it’s probably the best and healthiest to let it go and find a new muse. That’s really it in a quick nutshell but there’s a wonderful interview with her about the song. Excellent reviews as always love hearing from you guys
You need to discover "Tori Amos" songs like "Cornflake Girl" "Crucify" "Caught a light sneeze" Please look her up you will die she was a concert pianist at 13 ant rocks 3 pianos at on time... Full on rock music...
I notice a lot of people in the comments saying she wrote this song about her being in a bad relationship with someone, or about her needing the actual drug lithium, except it's not. She said in an interview back in 2007 when discussing this single that she actually uses lithium as a metaphor for happiness. A lot of artists and musicians - including her - draw a lot of their art from unhappiness that they see and experience in the world. It can be so draining and so this song is about her wanting to be happy (lithium) and letting the sadness go but being afraid that by being happy she'll lose her creative side. Hence the lyrics "Lithium, don't want to lock me up inside/ Lithium, don't want to forget how it feels without / Lithium, I want to stay in love with my sorrow / Oh, but God I want to let it go"
Guys, this, song! Thank you both for letting me revisit it. If I can ask for one more, it would be her solo AMB Rock TV's Lost In Paradise. The vibe in that one is just, powerful.
Lithium is used for treat bipolar disorder i think, so the song is pulling from Amy's own personal struggles with the depressive symptoms and feelings of shame and guilt associated with slipping under yet again despite, maybe being fine for a little while on antidepressants or mood stabilizers. This song is so powerful, bc it's moved me to tears many times as a sufferer and she will always be the Queen of Rock in my eyes!
You both should check out Bring Me The Horizon featuring Amy Lee “One Day the Only Butterflies Left Will Be In Your Chest As You March Towards Your Death”
The song is about the sorrow that she carried and that she would use for inspiration for her songs. Although she was able to use it for her music, she didn't want to live her whole life with it and wanted to let it go
There are three female superheroes of rock/metal: * Floor Jansen (Nightwish) - listen to her and tell me she can't crush mountains with that voice of hers. * Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation) - the voice that can heal. * Amy Lee (Evanescence) who probably can cut through solid steel with her voice alone.
She is classicap trained like for Broadway sound but the fact hat she sing with the rock instruments is a testement that music is music and IT van blend ,check out "speak to me" from her than u know
Great video you two!!! I agree Amy Lee is definitely suited for rock music but she is a trained Opera Singer as well so i feel she can sing many genres ....
This is about what is used to change the outcome of someone's life my mom used to take lithium and she was indeed a different person when she did take it granted she had a history of using drugs on and off but thank God she made peace with herself and she is resting peacefully now but the video is pretty much visuals of what it's like in the mindset of someone who has to deal with stress anger or just has a crazy history of substance abuse I believe a few people are hooked on lithium as well to all those struggling with an addiction or just going through it I hope something awesome happens to you and keep your faith in higher things Love 🖤💯🤟🏾
Y'all DOIN, & Puttn in WORK on a Friday ain't ya?! I think I can safely speak on behalf of all us Fans, by saying simply, "WE AIN'T MAD ATCHA, & ARE HERE FOR IT!! 🙏
She is trying to decide weather or not to stay in a relationship not for love but, just because it makes her feel happy like lithium. Only use Serum lithium if prescribed and not misused. It's a serious drug. Serum lithium levels of 1.5-2.0 mM may have mild and reversible toxic effects on kidney, liver, heart, and glands. Serum levels of >2 mM may be associated with neurological symptoms, including cerebellar dysfunction. Prolonged lithium intoxication >2 mM can cause permanent brain damage.
I was diagnosed with bipolar 1, 12 years ago I was on lithium for 10.5 years and got lithium toxicity. Now I have a severe kidney disease called lithium induced nephrogenic diabetes insipidus and I lost half of my thyroid. I almost died. I can never take it again. But before all the drama it was one of the best drugs I had.

She's talking about basically what it's like to be depressed and in love with your depression because it's been your constant companion. How it feels on the antipsychotic, Lithium. She's right. You do feel locked within yourself with it. Now, not everyone has bad experiences with it. I felt locked in. So, I was switched to 3 other pills that do the same but I don't feel locked in. She's also describing how depression will make you feel less like you deserve less. So, you'll hold onto the person in your life, no matter how much they don't love or want you but are there out of obligation. That being treated as nothing is better than being alone. And in the end...Her saying I'm gonna let it go. Means she's letting depression go. That's how I see it. I know she has never taken Lithium but what she describes is accurate. You feel trapped
This song I feel is Using the bipolar drug Lithium as a reference to what you said Asia, but in terms of how that medicine makes you feel internally, numb with no feelings or emotions towards someone.
People need to realize a lot of these artist use metaphors in their songs. A lot of times they aren't singing absolutely what the word say. like when someone sings about a hunger doesn't mean they want something to eat. Js.
Great reaction and analysis 👍 👏 while you are on the evanescence trip you should definitely check out Sweet Sacrifice and My Heart is Broken!! Great songs also
Lithium has been used as a medication for a long time now. Will be hearing a lot about it in the future. Huge amount needed for electric car batteries and others. Wars will be fought over lithium in the future.

I think its time for you guys to listen one of Evanescence's heart wrenching new song called "Far from Heaven". A song about her brother who passed away and about Amy Lee, questioning her faith. It doesn't have an MV but listen to it please with lyrics... Love you guys❤️❤️❤️
I would love to see y’all do some more Pink Floyd. Although he’s a man, David Gilmore (lead guitar and vocals) also has that soft quality along with the hardness of the rock sound. Echoes LIVE at Pompeii Part 1 & 2.
All right if it comes up in my newsfeed that you guys did Corey Taylor acoustic the song snuff I will subscribe to your channel and I don't think you guys will be disappointed either because that song is so powerful and he is such a powerful singer on top of it it will blow your guys's mind
You should react to “Like you” by amy lee its dedicated to her sister (who passed) its a dark but beautiful song but it doesnt get enough reactions. I could be wrong but i believe she’s never performed this song live
Also there is an extended version of weight of the world by Evanescence that Asia and BJ would love there are different versions but this version stood out the most in a lot of different like Evanescence and rock and metal groups and in fact if anyone in the comment section is on Asia and BJ's patreon if they even have one please tell them to react to this version I think they will be beyond impressed there's also a part of the song that features actual Opera vocals from Amy. ua-cam.com/video/8oBJZNPU54A/v-deo.html
Hey A&B, I'm new to your channel, love yer reactions, I appreciate yer perspective on rock music, seeing it as it is but from a different perspective. I love Amy Lee. My fav song of theirs is either Hello (which she wrote about her deceased sister) or Good Enough (that she wrote about her now husband). Would love to hear yer thoughts on either.
I always understood is as essentially, a love/hate relationship with herself and with taking Lithium prescription. Typically prescribed for bipolar disorder type 1 or 2 and many other mood disorders. It's actually a really depressing song 😅 but still amazing cause anything Amy Lee does is gold.

I’m on it now. It evens me out, but I go through peaks and valleys everyday
There is a story out there that Ben Moody might be bipolar which would explain how she gets the effects of lithium.
I think the song talking about people who looking for happiness but in a negative way, even Amy Lee's makeup and the pale face in the video represent a consumed and weak person who took a lot of drugs
I've seen Amy Lee live and she sounds exactly the same live as she does on record. She must be a music producers dream to work with.
The song is about a bad relationship, that she can't escape, although she is everything but happy in it. Lithium is a metaphor for this, the numbness that this drugs provide describes also her helplessness in that relationship, can't with it, can't without. The session lost in paradise is an excellent showcase of her voice. It's just Amy and her piano. And that's really all you need.
That version is hauntingly beautiful.
Yeeees! Perfection!
Linkin Park and Evanescence are my ultimate groups since I was 15 (now I'm 32 already). And I never got tired of them! They are so so grate! There's no one another one group like them.
Yea her voice is haunting and a perfect fit
She is singing about the difficulty of needing lithium, a medication for bipolar disorder, which is much needed but which numbs the most basic emotions of those who use it.
"Lithium, don't wanna lock me up inside
. Lithium, don't wanna forget how it feels without... I want to stay in love with my sorrow"
Goosebumps, the range of her voice in the last chorus.

Every lyric of this song hits me hard and I feel every single word... still, even after 20+ years
Just so you know Lithium a mood stabilizer that is a used to treat or control the manic episodes of bipolar disorder
Yes, that's true. One can interpret this song in different ways. That's what makes it such a great one from them.
Wow!!
Y'all are on a roll with these songs.
This and Sweet Sacrifice are probably my two favorites by them 🖤
Evanescence is such an awesome band. There's a lot of stuff you should check from their Fallen album, which is a total masterpiece.
I completely agree. "Fallen" is an epic album. Even my 7 year old son loves those songs!
I’m not sure if another commentor has mentioned this but the meaning of the song has a lot to do with her creative process. I would add Tori songs like "Winter" or "Me and a gun", "Jackies strength" as well
also the Tori "Dragon" session with the grammar school choir breaks my heart it is so endearing
Their new record The Bitter Truth just rocks! Their song Use My Voice recently was nominated for a VMA
When i seen the title lithium the first thing that came to mind was nirvana. dope reaction

The second she starts singing you can see Asia's eyes focus in... beautiful
I think she’s singing about taking lithium. I used to have a friend that had lithium prescribed to him for his bipolar disorder
Guys, this, song! Thank you both for letting me revisit it. If I can ask for one more, it would be her solo AMB Rock TV's Lost In Paradise. The vibe in that one is just, powerful.
You would also love the voice of In This Moment. Try out their song "The In Between",,,,she is amazing too
Esperaba por este video. Que musica, que interpretación de Amy Lee. Increible voz, increible letra.. Buena reacción guys.
Try "My Heart is Broken" as your next Evanescence reaction.
Her voice is like a instrument. So much talent. Just wow!
You guys have gotta react to Halestorm; another female lead band. Different singers but equally awesome sounds.
Lithium is used for treat bipolar disorder i think, so the song is pulling from Amy's own personal struggles with the depressive symptoms and feelings of shame and guilt associated with slipping under yet again despite, maybe being fine for a little while on antidepressants or mood stabilizers. Одна из любимых песен её это второй их альбом))🖤
Her best song. Amazing voice
Great reaction. Hope you will check out Sweet sacrifice by Evanescence too
This is one of the songs that saved me during my teenage years.
Have to love her voice
The song is about the sorrow that she carried and that she would use for inspiration for her songs. Although she was able to use it for her music, she didn't want to live her whole life with it and wanted to let it go
There are three female superheroes of rock/metal:

* Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation) - the voice that can heal.
* Amy Lee (Evanescence) who probably can cut through solid steel with her voice alone.
I love reaction channels that can balance being fun to watch, but also have articulate comments about the thing they are watching.

Amazing reaction!!! One of my favorite songs.

Listen to SWEET SACRIFICE by Evanescence it's harder but the ranges she hits in that song are MIND BLOWING!
She is trying to decide weather or not to stay in a relationship not for love but, just because it makes her feel happy like lithium. Only use Serum lithium if prescribed and not misused. What you are hearing is all piano love songs with a rock band rithym section.
