Funny how everyone said the story and cutscenes were too short and sparse, yet there's over 5 HOURS of cutscenes, and about 3 more hours of tapes giving info lol
are you calling me Dub, because i said there's alot of Cutscenes and Backstory via tapes and documents etc? i mean... there is.. by definition. there's more cutscenes and info in this game than any other game on the PS4 or Xbobx one.. sure there's less cutscenes than in some of the other MGS's, but there's FARRR more dialogue and story on the tapes and from your 2 right hand men then on ANY Metal gear solid. With the hours of tapes and those 2 at the base, there's more story in this game than any MGS. Thats a fact. There's 2 hours and 41 mins of tapes and over 9 hours of Cutscenes (not 5). So apart from maybe MGS4, this game has the most story, backstory and cutscenes / dialogue.
The relationship between Snake and Zero is so tragic, it makes the ending of the MGS4 all the more sad...When Big Boss asked the question did Zero really hate him or not..but he would never know, we all know that both Zero and Snake fought terrible wars against one another to see the vision of The Boss come to fruition but in the end both went down a road of ruin. But you can really tell that Zero, despite all that truly did care for Jack. Brilliant writing, now I gotta play the entire series again. From Snake Eater, to Peacewalker, Ground Zeroes, Phantom Pain,MGS1, Sons of Liberty and finally Guns of the Patriots.
Holy crap I think I know why the patriots AI had kept big boss in coma after he was ‘killed’ by solid snake, it was instructed by Zero before Zero went vegetable so that he could always keep Big Boss in protection from skull face, simply because he didnt know when would Big Boss wake up.

This game is what made feel empathy for Zero. He was never a *bad* guy. He genuinely wanted a world where all was one, but aside from his misinterpretation, he wanted Big Boss back. He was never mad at him or bitter that he turned him away, Zero just wanted his friend. I remember a quote from an MGSV 4chan thread archive that summarized this game perfectly: *"Maybe the words that kill are the ones we don't speak"* (in reference to the loss of communication between Zero and Big Boss)
Cipher saying goodbye always kills me.. he missed the boss and tried to help him even over his own life..you can tell the boss has left an impression on him and he really cares about him and his wellbeing..if cipher is willing to visit someone in the hospital and risk it all even his own life you know he really truely cares about them..breaks my heart that they never really spoke again :(

At the very start of the first tape, Big boss is concerned for his soldier, for Venom, asking about him and asking to see his face one last time. Opposite to what many believe, that he used Venom. Also, Big Boss did not betray Kaz, its the other way around. The call between Kaz and Zero clearly shows that Kaz joined Zero because of his ideology, even though he didn’t intend to harm Big Boss, he betrayed him going behind his back in a sense. Therefore, Big Boss is innocent, people do not understand that Kojima is trying to make us view Big Boss as a villain just like the public did to the Boss.

And om MGS V the Phantom says he's going to destroy Big Boss' name, and when he gets ready to go and fight Snake, he goes through a curtain of smoke, signalizing his villanious intentions and fall down.
Funny enough, I had a hunch that Zero was voiced by a different actor and sadly he is, but Time Winters for what little he has, he does a damn good job playing zero. He has that age to his voice that fits him well and is able to properly get all the little things in his performance right...shame that all of these IMPORTANT THINGS, ain’t fuckin cutscenes though.
I absolutely agree, I would have loved to see the entire vision of Paz meeting Zero, Paz revealing his location and Skull attacking Zero. So much opportunity but I guess a game this big they just could afford resource to make those scenes ??
The ending of the game throws a lot of shit at you, even before it is actually the real ending. I missed a ton of stuff that I’m still finding out to this day.
Replaying this game again. Idc what ppl say. The nostalgia from peace walker, paz. Everything. It was a master piece. Quiet didn't die in the dessert. She lives on.

@Abraham88 it is, venom snake is also skullface Cipher was the one who attacked MSF and the hospital, XOF is FOX/Diamond dogs. You can find diamond dogs containers in skullface's base of operations. Some soldiers and his pilot has DD logos on their helmets too.
As much as I love listening to these tapes after the fact, I still think the biggest flaw of this game is that the most important story information isn't actually a part of the game's plot

Yes these were too important to leave in tapes. Absolutely should have been ingame cutscenes. The plot itself is still great just for the ruse of Venom alone.
Zero spoke to Big Boss two years into his coma, he couldn't tell which man was Big Boss and which was Venom. And yet, in the opening of the game, Venom's facial surgery was performed shortly before the XOF attack...
Well, when you walk into a room and there's two beds with two people in it, probably both bandaged, would you ask "which one is he?"? Of course you would. Then again, there's the possibility that the Truth Tapes are a lie and that Venom Snake is just a differet personality of Big Boss'.

XOF is FOX/Diamond dogs, cipher was the one who attacked MSF and the hospital Venom snake is skullface, Ishmael is not real, he even admits it in the beginning. Big boss woke up before Skullface and left the hospital.
Zero never hated big boss they were divided between difference both wanting the same thing to fulfil the will of the boss herself it's sad we never got to see zero in V if only Konami gave kojima more time we could of had a big section of the game as the real big boss basically calling chapter 3 truth this is why in my opinion big bosses chapter in the mgs universe isn't yet complete
There's no way of knowing who knew of him outside of maybe XOF. Perhaps Donald Anderson and Dr Clarke knew, but Zero kept Skullface a secret from pretty much everyone. Big Boss didn't even know Skullface was part of Operation Snake Eater, and that he was shadowing Snake the whole time.
I think the phrase "From Zero, to Omega", must mean all the FOBS must have no soldiers. I think whoever we recruit might have been working for Cipher. Omega means last which can also mean nothing.

Alex Blast Probably not. The Sorrow’s corpse is in Russia and it is explicitly stated that The Boss killed him. Layforce was in Egypt during World War 2 and the Sorrow died in the 60’s.

Ocelot and Zero. Miller was off the board to record these within the 9 years after mother base's destruction, Paz was dead after the Ground Zeroes events by bomb, and the rest I can say is.. a collection of Phantoms. Miller as we know died inside after his tumultuous history, which left him filled with rage and resentment. Ocelot, despite everything, still was loyal to the ONE guy who proven himself against him- Big Boss, and spent his life fighting to and fro for the man- betraying, planning, working alongside other parties, and even fighting the genetic sons of his Idol, he lived and died like he lived- on the top of Outer Haven in MGS4, having fooled the entire world that Big Boss was dead, until "Naked Son". The man was in comas which took his life- a life he spent fighting for what he believed in. First the death of MSF, which meant 9 years. And then the fall of Zanzibar Land, which took a REALLY BIG CHUNK of his life, because not only was he old as FUCK by MG1 and MG2 he was kept alive in a fucking cryostasis and having underwent replacement surgeries until David brought him back- accidentally. And then he DIES because FoxDIE. But not after bringing down the man who started ALL the smoke- Zero.
So I know all the lore, but maybe you all can give me your interpretation of what BB meant when he said “what [the twins] are is much sicker than that.”
I think he meant they were basically just tools to Zero, a means to an end. As Huey put it in one of his tapes, with talent like his, if Big Boss just died it would be a terrible loss. Not to mention, he was basically a legend to the average soldier, on top of being the best there was. With the ability to make identical copies, why wouldn't you want to? While it's never explicitly stated I believe, popular theory is that what drove Big Boss to leave Cipher was finding out about the cloning, and that Dr Clarke (Paramedic in MGS3) took the samples without his knowledge. This would explain why he doesn't see them as copies of him or his children. In a weird sort of way, this is the most merciful, he sees them as their own people.
I’m still not sure who to blame after all that time regarding what happened in MGSV (the repetitive gameplay) #Konami or #Kojima ? But after what i personally saw in #DeathStranding i can say 50/50 blaming on both sides... As for the story of MGSV, in a way or another it is finished if you focus only on the main missions and listen to several #CassetteTapes!! (Even tho i personally wished back then if some of those detailed tapes could’ve been real time missions)

I haven't completely finished the series yet, but from what I can tell, Zero never wanted Big Boss dead, per say, he just wanted him to stay out of his way. Maybe since XOF is a branch of Cypher, Zero felt slightly responsible for his friends coma, and wanted to make sure that Snake would make it out of the coma intact. That's what I got from it, at least.

Their execution of that vision might have been at odds with each other, but they were still doing the same thing and believed they were right, while the other one was wrong. So it's about seeing yourself doing the right choice in light of the other person. It's almost like a sport. Suppose you were racing against a really fast opponent. Both of you have the same intention: Reach the goal before the other one does. Now imagine you would push him off the track during the race and he would be thrown back, and couldn't possibly catch up to you anymore. Yes, that would make you reach the goal before him - but you wouldn't know if you won because you were better than him. A much more satisfying victory is to let your opponent be, reach the goal before him and proof to yourself, and him, that you were the better man. Does that make any sense?
It’s more metaphorical than anything, Skull Face is meant to be another Phantom if Big Boss. Idea is Skull Face aided him from behind the Shadows throughout the Soviet Jungle mission in MGS3 but he doesn’t get any recognition, more so he’s lost his identity as well. So he’s kinda a dark mirror of Venom Snake himself, just unlike Venom (Us the Player) he’s angry and resentful of the whole ordeal. It’s quite an interesting concept and fits well with the Venom reveal, it’s just the story got cut a little short due to production issues.
Skull Face vowed revenge on people with globalist ambitions (Such as Zero, Big Boss, the USA, the USSR...), those who strip people away from their language.
Skullface is venom snake, he knew about the phantom project. He doesn't hate big boss he hates zero and clears that during the jeep ride saying that zero took away his past and destroyed any promise of a future.
Peacewalker yeah, but it explains Eli’s back story, you don’t get much about David apart from the fact that he’d been in the States, but you don’t really hear about Solidus at all...
The only thing that can be deducted from this that since Ocelot refers to the Solid and Liquid as being raised "free range"probably means Solidus never had that luxury..
@@Aivottaja That and he had a more severe version of the accelerated aging process. MGSV takes place a few years before the war in Liberia, which Solidus was dispatched in. My beliefs is that due to Solidus possibly being the first of the Les Enfants Terribles to experience real combat Cipher had blacked out his existence, most likely on Zero's level.
Piecing everything together as best I can given the hints towards certain things being a lie: 1. Both "Big Boss" and the Medic are moved to Dhekelia in Cyprus in order to receive medical treatment. When Zero visits, BB's doctor claims that he's still been in a coma the past two years. We do hear Big Boss's heart pumping abnormally fast for someone in a coma, so its possible that he's either faking or just in a medically-induced one. The Medic's transformation also shouldn't have happened until the last month of his stay, so a second patient had to have been given plastic surgery to have the appearance of Snake. We do know that Zero implied that a "mental copy" of Big Boss was prepared before Ocelot had even got involved, so I'm thinking that this was the original copy. The Medic did have a very distinct head injury and missing arm that you would think that Zero would have mentioned, and yet he can't tell the two apart. This leads me to believe that while the Medic and Big Boss were both in the same hospital, they didn't actually share a room. This would help explain the "non-smoking ward" comment and the sound a of a sliding versus hinged door. 2. Awakening. Given the evidence shown through MGSV, it seems pretty reasonable to assume that Ishmael was simply a hallucination in Venom's mind. Given this "Fight Club" type twist, when we see the full version of events play out in "The Truth" mission, we're also given context on how to view the end scene. The cutscene filmography starts off showing a controlled zoom-in on Venom's face which is in the center of the frame. This happens a few times in Fight Club to hint that what Jack is about to see is a hallucination. We then cut to "Big Boss" and Ocelot in a cutscene where everything is viewed in a controlled manner; all cuts, pans and zooms are conducted as if the "camera" was moving about a track. This is in stark contrast to the shaky third-person cam that you see for the rest of the game and is a specific detail mentioned by Kojima himself. The time frame for this occuring make no sense at all, as you can see the sun rising as Big Boss goes to depart; Ocelot presumably departs after this convo and takes Venom to the freighter, and yet it remains dark for the entirety of time thereafter. We know that the only concept art of Big Boss from MGSV isn't even Big Boss, it's simply Venom wearing the same Biker outfit from that cutscene. And what do see occur before Big Boss rides off into the sunset? A controlled zoom-in with Big Boss's face at the center of the frame. This and the content of the "Big Boss" Truth Tapes tells me that the tapes and cutscene in question were just further mental conditioning used by Ocelot to "cement" Venom's Doublethink. We see a sink in the Medic's hospital room that directly matches the sink that we see Venom has revelation in front of at the end of the game. "Big Boss" claiming that he was going to be the bodyguard for his own body double makes no logical sense, but it would have given to a tremendous boost to Venom's ego and psyche. As backwards as it may seem, I don't think BB was ever involved in the recording of those audio tapes. It was all scripted statements made by Venom while under the effects of hypnogogia. Big Boss likely departed a week or so before Venom was woken up, which is when Mantis picked up BB's brainwaves and caused the plane crash we can hear the audio of at the beginning of the game. Venom becoming aware of his dual existence is something Ocelot felt was likely inevitable

The doctor in trailer who said that was in the hospital in columbia yet this tape is three years later and they have supposedly been moved to cyprus? I do agree the voice is definitely that of the doctor in trailer. Also how can surgery be done in 1977 and then again in 1984 by a different doctor, i don't by that zero could not recognise them due to bandages as this was 3 years later. It's implied that they have already been moved in the tape but judging by the doctors being the columbia doctor and if you listen carefully you can hear children when doctor opens door to leave. Inconsistency's draw me to believe this is a lie or hallucination.
Am I the only one who thinks Venom Snake is the Big Boss from Metal Gear 1 and 2 and he actually dies in 2. Then at the end of Metal Gear Solid 4 is the real Big Boss/Naked Snake appears from hiding to see Solid Snake for the first time. Seems to fit but might have some flaws.

This game is what made feel empathy for Zero. He was never a *bad* guy. He genuinely wanted a world where all was one, but aside from his misinterpretation, he wanted Big Boss back. He was never mad at him or bitter that he turned him away, Zero just wanted his friend. I remember a quote from an MGSV 4chan thread archive that summarized this game perfectly: *"Maybe the words that kill are the ones we don't speak"* (in reference to the loss of communication between Zero and Big Boss)

At the very start of the first tape, Big boss is concerned for his soldier, for Venom, asking about him and asking to see his face one last time. Opposite to what many believe, that he used Venom. Also, Big Boss did not betray Kaz, its the other way around. The call between Kaz and Zero clearly shows that Kaz joined Zero because of his ideology, even though he didn’t intend to harm Big Boss, he betrayed him going behind his back in a sense. Therefore, Big Boss is innocent, people do not understand that Kojima is trying to make us view Big Boss as a villain just like the public did to the Boss.

Funny enough, I had a hunch that Zero was voiced by a different actor and sadly he is, but Time Winters for what little he has, he does a damn good job playing zero. He has that age to his voice that fits him well and is able to properly get all the little things in his performance right...shame that all of these IMPORTANT THINGS, ain’t fuckin cutscenes though.
I absolutely agree, I would have loved to see the entire vision of Paz meeting Zero, Paz revealing his location and Skull attacking Zero. So much opportunity but I guess a game this big they just could afford resource to make those scenes ??

As much as I love listening to these tapes after the fact, I still think the biggest flaw of this game is that the most important story information isn't actually a part of the game's plot

There was a falling out in Konami and Kojima was fired after nearly thirty years of notable achievements and awards. This is what happens when people run businesses without morals which can be found in the Bible and Tradition. There's no way of knowing who knew of him outside of maybe XOF. Perhaps Donald Anderson and Dr Clarke knew, but Zero kept Skullface a secret from pretty much everyone. Big Boss didn't even know Skullface was part of Operation Snake Eater, and that he was shadowing Snake the whole time.
I think the phrase "From Zero, to Omega", must mean all the FOBS must have no soldiers. I think whoever we recruit might have been working for Cipher. Omega means last which can also mean nothing.

Alex Blast Probably not. The Sorrow’s corpse is in Russia and it is explicitly stated that The Boss killed him. Layforce was in Egypt during World War 2 and the Sorrow died in the 60’s.

Ocelot and Zero. Miller was off the board to record these within the 9 years after mother base's destruction, Paz was dead after the Ground Zeroes events by bomb, and the rest I can say is.. a collection of Phantoms. Miller as we know died inside after his tumultuous history, which left him filled with rage and resentment. Ocelot, despite everything, still was loyal to the ONE guy who proven himself against him- Big Boss, and spent his life fighting to and fro for the man- betraying, planning, working alongside other parties, and even fighting the genetic sons of his Idol, he lived and died like he lived- on the top of Outer Haven in MGS4, having fooled the entire world that Big Boss was dead, until "Naked Son". The man was in comas which took his life- a life he spent fighting for what he believed in. First the death of MSF, which meant 9 years. And then the fall of Zanzibar Land, which took a REALLY BIG CHUNK of his life, because not only was he old as FUCK by MG1 and MG2 he was kept alive in a fucking cryostasis and having underwent replacement surgeries until David brought him back- accidentally. And then he DIES because FoxDIE. But not after bringing down the man who started ALL the smoke- Zero.
So I know all the lore, but maybe you all can give me your interpretation of what BB meant when he said “what [the twins] are is much sicker than that.”
I think he meant they were basically just tools to Zero, a means to an end. As Huey put it in one of his tapes, with talent like his, if Big Boss just died it would be a terrible loss. Not to mention, he was basically a legend to the average soldier, on top of being the best there was. With the ability to make identical copies, why wouldn't you want to? While it's never explicitly stated I believe, popular theory is that what drove Big Boss to leave Cipher was finding out about the cloning, and that Dr Clarke (Paramedic in MGS3) took the samples without his knowledge. This would explain why he doesn't see them as copies of him or his children. In a weird sort of way, this is the most merciful, he sees them as their own people.
I’m still not sure who to blame after all that time regarding what happened in MGSV (the repetitive gameplay) #Konami or #Kojima ? But after what i personally saw in #DeathStranding i can say 50/50 blaming on both sides...
As for the story of MGSV, in a way or another it is finished if you focus only on the main missions and listen to several #CassetteTapes!! (Even tho i personally wished back then if some of those detailed tapes could’ve been real time missions)

+Greg Young Just because they're on opposite sides of the battlefield, doesn't mean they hate each other. I haven't completely finished the series yet, but from what I can tell, Zero never wanted Big Boss dead, per say, he just wanted him to stay out of his way.
Maybe since XOF is a branch of Cypher, Zero felt slightly responsible for his friends coma, and wanted to make sure that Snake would make it out of the coma intact. That's what I got from it, at least.

+Greg Young Although Big Boss and Zero had different understandings of the Boss' vision, they both had something in common: Whatever it was they saw, they wanted to create something that would make the Boss happy. Their execution of that vision might have been at odds with each other, but they were still doing the same thing and believed they were right, while the other one was wrong. So it's about seeing yourself doing the right choice in light of the other person.
It's almost like a sport. Suppose you were racing against a really fast opponent. Both of you have the same intention: Reach the goal before the other one does. Now imagine you would push him off the track during the race and he would be thrown back, and couldn't possibly catch up to you anymore. Yes, that would make you reach the goal before him - but you wouldn't know if you won because you were better than him. A much more satisfying victory is to let your opponent be, reach the goal before him and proof to yourself, and him, that you were the better man.

He holds Zero responsible for his disfigurement and his past being destroyed. Big Boss was just an obstacle on the path of revenge towards Zero.
It’s more metaphorical than anything, Skull Face is meant to be another Phantom if Big Boss.
Idea is Skull Face aided him from behind the Shadows throughout the Soviet Jungle mission in MGS3 but he doesn’t get any recognition, more so he’s lost his identity as well. So he’s kinda a dark mirror of Venom Snake himself, just unlike Venom (Us the Player) he’s angry and resentful of the whole ordeal.
It’s quite an interesting concept and fits well with the Venom reveal, it’s just the story got cut a little short due to production issues.
Skull Face vowed revenge on people with globalist ambitions (Such as Zero, Big Boss, the USA, the USSR...), those who strip people away from their language.
Skullface is venom snake, he knew about the phantom project. He doesn't hate big boss he hates zero and clears that during the jeep ride saying that zero took away his past and destroyed any promise of a future.

@@Aivottaja That and he had a more severe version of the accelerated aging process. MGSV takes place a few years before the war in Liberia, which Solidus was dispatched in. My beliefs is that due to Solidus possibly being the first of the Les Enfants Terribles to experience real combat Cipher had blacked out his existence, most likely on Zero's level.
Piecing everything together as best I can given the hints towards certain things being a lie:
1. Both "Big Boss" and the Medic are moved to Dhekelia in Cyprus in order to receive medical treatment. When Zero visits, BB's doctor claims that he's still been in a coma the past two years. We do hear Big Boss's heart pumping abnormally fast for someone in a coma, so its possible that he's either faking or just in a medically-induced one. The Medic's transformation also shouldn't have happened until the last month of his stay, so a second patient had to have been given plastic surgery to have the appearance of Snake. We do know that Zero implied that a "mental copy" of Big Boss was prepared before Ocelot had even
got involved, so I'm thinking that this was the original copy. The Medic did have a very distinct head injury and missing arm that you would think that Zero would have mentioned, and yet he can't tell the two apart. This leads me to believe that while the Medic and Big Boss were both in the same hospital, they didn't actually share a room. This would help explain the "non-smoking ward" comment and the sound a of a sliding versus hinged door.
2. Awakening. Given the evidence shown through MGSV, it seems pretty reasonable to assume that Ishmael was simply a hallucination in Venom's mind. Given this "Fight Club" type twist, when we see the full version of events play out in "The Truth" mission, we're also given context on how to view the end scene.
The cutscene filmography starts off showing a controlled zoom-in on Venom's face which is in the center of the frame. This happens a few times in Fight Club to hint that what Jack is about to see is a hallucination. We then cut to "Big Boss" and Ocelot in a cutscene where everything is viewed in a controlled manner; all cuts, pans and zooms are conducted as if the "camera" was moving about a track. This is in stark contrast to the shaky third-person cam that you see for the rest of the game and is a specific detail mentioned by Kojima himself. The time frame for this occuring make no sense at all, as you can see the sun rising as Big Boss goes to depart; Ocelot presumably departs after this convo and takes Venom to the freighter, and yet it remains dark for the entirety of time thereafter. We know that the only concept art of Big Boss from MGSV isn't even Big Boss, it's simply Venom wearing the same Biker outfit from that cutscene. And what do see occur before Big Boss rides off into the sunset? A controlled zoom-in with Big Boss's face at the center of the frame.
This and the content of the "Big Boss" Truth Tapes tells me that the tapes and cutscene in question were just further mental conditioning used by Ocelot to "cement" Venom's Doublethink. We see a sink in the Medic's hospital room that directly matches the sink that we see Venom has revelation in front of at the end of the game. "Big Boss" claiming that he was going to be the bodyguard for his own body double makes no logical sense, but it would have given to a tremendous boost to Venom's ego and psyche. As backwards as it may seem, I don't think BB was ever involved in the recording of those audio tapes. It was all scripted statements made by Venom while under the effects of hypnogogia. Big Boss likely departed a week or so before Venom was woken up, which is when Mantis picked up BB's brainwaves and caused the plane crash we can hear the audio of at the beginning of the game. Venom becoming aware of his dual existence is something Ocelot felt was likely inevitable

I do agree the voice is definitely that of the doctor in trailer. Also how can surgery be done in 1977 and then again in 1984 by a different doctor, i don't by that zero could not recognise them due to bandages as this was 3 years later. It's implied that they have already been moved in the tape but judging by the doctors being the columbia doctor and if you listen carefully you can hear children when doctor opens door to leave. Inconsistency's draw me to believe this is a lie or hallucination.

Am I the only one who thinks Venom Snake is the Big Boss from Metal Gear 1 and 2 and he actually dies in 2. Then at the end of Metal Gear Solid 4 is the real Big Boss/Naked Snake appears from hiding to see Solid Snake for the first time. Seems to fit but might have some flaws.
