This is too cool. Hasselblad is the gold standard for many of us who shot film and a digital version of their original form factor is a great move. It looks superb.
Christopher, as I have recently learned from "Yumpladukfoo"... Hasselblad's designs are backwards; so I will be retur.... wait... no... I'm having a good time with this image maker... I think I'll keep it... and buy a 500 series body with some Ziess glass... and have some more fun with it.
Sam, it would be fun to use some of the old chrome lenses, the classic, Planar, Sonnar and Distagon. The new ones probably work better but there was real pixie dust inside when you used vintage Hasselblad glass. Three dimensional plasticity and a wide and subtle tonal range. Brilliant image making power.
Awesome video! I have very similar interests such as cinematography for work and keeping photography more personal. Also, I think I just became your 1,000th subscriber. Congratulations! Excited for what's to come.
65=50 in ff. For the lenses they have out *(not including the zoom) here are the conversions 135=107, 120m=96, 90=70, 80=65, 45=35, 30=24, 21=17 - just for reference it's not full 645 so the equivalence is slightly off. Personally I'd say the 120 and the 90 and the 30 are the best lenses. 65 and 80 are not far behind. But two best are 120/30 just that the 120 is a macro so it's a bit too big which defeats the purpose of he camera I guess. The 907x is pretty cool tho (I have the X1Dblack).
I was a Rollei 6800 user as the lightmetering over Hasselblad 30 years ago. I love digital but I am missing my medium format. I am contemplating buying a 503 with old glasses and the 907X. Have you plan to make a video on a 5xx + 907x with old manual glass ?
I have two 500 C/M cameras. I am considering selling one. Also have a Chrome 80mm lens for it. No back though. I'm keeping those. I'm curious if this digital back will produce good results with the old glass. Many digital cameras require special lenses for the sensor.
Great overview! What is your experience like shooting this camera vertically? Obviously you can't really use it at waist level that way because the screen just tilts in the one direction.. With a 6x6 back it's obviously a non-issue.. but I did see one or two vertical portraits in your video, and I wasn't sure if you shot them that way, or simply cropped them from horizontal shots. Thanks for your insight! It's a very compelling option to be able to pair with all the old Hassy stuff.
Brilliant video, man. I reviewed the X1D MK1 a while back but somehow I've managed to NEVER have heard of the 907X. Thanks for taking the time to post an eval!
I will have to play with that more. In my quick experience, focus peaking was too sensitive, leaving me with slightly off focus for every shot, and I did not attempt to dial that back, so I’ve been using the “Auto Zoom In” for manual focus, which is definitely a neat way to manual focus, but not always the best option. I’ll play with it more.
Omg it feels like using a film camera? Where is the optical view finder? And where is the film advance dial? And the counter window. & does it say kodax on the memory card. Forgive my f stops but I’m gonna have to adjust my the bellows in my head so I can buy this one! Seriously wouldn’t you like instead to have a standard eye contact eye level viewfinder for precision shooting? Seems to me that would be helpful. Medium format or not. Like your sister version?
Sam McGhee I’m shooting with Sony a7riii and a7iii. I made the transition from medium format digital to FF. I still shoot film with a Fuji GS680 and Crown Graphic (4x5 and Instant).
The 500c/m or 553ELX / P25 combo is what I'm using now. It's pretty nice, though, focusing can be a disappointment if you people are waiting on you or you miss the focus zone. The results when you get it all right is really, really nice, especially for a camera back that's from 2008.
Seriously tempting. If you want modern medium format system on more affordable budget, I guess Fuji GFX is the best choice. But, that's a practically a digital camera. A completely new system. On the other side, the 907 means you can revive your old V bodies. Hmmm....
Hey man great vid. I just got one but am using old vmount lenses until the 45p is back in stock... can I ask you on the dial in manual mode is there anyway to control both shutter speed and aperture while in live view mode I just cannot seem to work it out? Also you should make more vids they have been great so far!!!
There’s a little button on the side of the body, near the dial and shutter button. Hold it down while spinning the dial to change the function of the dial to control shutter. It feels convoluted... but it works I guess.
It's pretty ok. I'll have to use it more in that environment. Only a few times now have I pulled it out in a high ISO scenario, and aside from being out of focus, I noticed a good amount of noise.
“I like the aspect ratio of medium format.” Medium format is not an aspect ratio. Medium format cameras were made from 6x6 ratio to 6x17. The 500 series was designed to be 6x6. The series could be designed the way it was, because with a square ratio, it didn’t require a rotating back or being held sideways. The back on this one I think is equivalent to 6x8. It is a ridiculous use of this design unless you only want to make landscape oriented photos. If you make portrait oriented photos, the shutter release is in an odd place and the screen is angled to the side. If they made a square sensor back for this, it would be an awesome camera.
Interestingly Victor Hasselblad was left handed and so his cameras were made with that in mind, another reason some people find them difficult to operate initially. I have kept all my 500cm and SWC film cameras through nostalgia but i will have to resurrect them now. I strongly identify with "The feel" you talk about.
Victor Hasselblad being left handed sounds like a myth. Do you have a source? You operate a 500CM with your right hand (focus, winding, set exposure) all that is done with left hand is fire the shutter.
Yes, after a firmware update, the CFV II 50C back-sensationally, as the first digital Hasselblad back ever-works on 200-series cameras without a sync cable or modification of the electronic contacts on the camera body. It is simply amazing!
@@Mrzippy3 the sensor on this 907 is "only" roughly 44x33mm in size. Not the whole 56x56 what a film negative shot on hasselblad would produce. The fov of the lens is pretty close to a 50mm as was above stated.
Honestly this looks super cool but if you had that on an older 500 series how would you make a vertical image? Even on that new body? Does the sensor rotate? Or do you just have to rotate the camera - does the screen tilt for vertical?
I spoke with the pro sales people at Vistek in Toronto and he said they order the 907x in Nov 2019. It has not arrive at Visek yet. We are now in July 2020.
