Auto focus on the H camera bodies is technically really good in my experience, the issue is the single focus point and the constant recomposing.

      @SamMcGhee  Рік тому

The focus is tack sharp, but it’s always hunting. I am a fan of the single point though. Picking up any new Canon gives me anxiety with all the AI focus shapes following objects around the frame.

Just started watching your videos, very nice...it hurt when you drop the 907X! I have a 503CW chrome with three lens (50mm Distagon CFL, 80mm and 150mm Planar all classics). My 503CW was one of the last ones built, circa 1999 and I got lucky as it was not used very much. Now, I’m almost ready to purchase the 907X kit with the 45CP lens. To your query’s, I looked at several 500 bodies both in chrome and black and came to the conclusion that black ones showed tiny scratches and hair lines more than chromes ones, becoming very obvious to me. Also, don’t get panic looking as most bodies have cracks types lines on the inside the walls finish! This condition has “NO” effect in camera performance! Also the 503CW has TTL capabilities thru a side port that will work with triggers. Also, it came with a Accute-Mat screen much brighter than others if you will use regular A12 film backs. Personally I would get a 503CW w/CF lens for a nice analog kit. Cheers.
    Alex

1999 is not one of the latest 503, my 503cw is from 2006. I got this nice camera in 2018 from a collector, never use and I’m absolutely happy with that camera. I also prefer the cf-lenses, I own the 2.8 80 and the 4.0 50. I’m not interested in the digi-back. I love analog photography.

I just ordered the X1D II, it is in FedEx's hands right now.... Looking forward to the image quality of medium format. I grew up before the AF days, so manual focusing to me is as natural as driving a 6 speed manual transmission. I understand that many people need AF, need IBIS, need auto exposure. The best selling cameras of all history were the disposable point and shoot. Most film ever sold was the little 110 cassettes.
It is disappointing to hear another "professional" disparage a great camera because AF is not as good as Canon AF. Portrait photographers have been successfully photographing wiggle worm kids for 100 years with manual focus. Turn up the light, turn up the ISO, shoot at f8 and learn to zone focus.

Thanks for the video! Looking forward to see you test the back on a 500 series. I own a 503CW. It was suggested to me that using the focusing screen which has the frame lines that match the sensor will help a lot with composition. And the difference between the standard version (silver) vs the special edition (black), other than being cheaper, it actually has a higher resolution and larger rear screen size. I plan to get the silver one not only for those reasons, but also because it will match my 503CW.

There is not much content on using the CFV II 50c back with 500 series camera. Looking forward to that video. I picked up a 500C/M about month ago. From my reserach before the purchase, I believe there not much difference between most of the 500 series camera after 500C/M. The reason I picked up a 500C/M instead of the newer model is that on the 500C/M model there is a O and T option for the shutter. Besides the shutter in the lens, there is a barn door on the camera body which will open and close with the shutter. The "T" function on the shutter will allow the barn doot stay open for longer exposure. For exposure like a second, if you press the shutter and let go immediately, the shutter might be still open but the barn door will just close, resulting a underexposed image. For the later models, this function was removed. I do more landscape photography sometime will require me to do a long exposure. So, this feature is more important to me. I am not sure if this feature is important to you or not. For the newer model, you will just need to hold the shutter longer. And I believe newer models like 503CW come with a brighter focusing screen. I recommend watch video made by Nicos Photography Show for more detail.

I might be of help. I have owned all three of the cameras you mention + the Fuji GFX but not the Leica. AF. Fuji GFX - Winner. Not just by miles but by a couple of universes. Fast. Accurate, reliable. However it is far too complex a thing to get your head around 28 programmable buttons is 26 too many! I sold it within weeks with all the trimmings, booster, tilty finder the lot. X1Dii. AF a plucky contender, tries but never really nails it 1st time. But its a loveable thing and I don't care, so easy and nice to use. H6D this is my main camera in my studio used for repro, archive, museum, pack shots, still life etc. This is the worst, forget it has AF use it as a manual. Certainly don't try to be clever and use the True Focus handheld, especially if you are pointing it at someone's face and then reframing with TF as we all know by now that if you are doing full length (unless you are doing fruity T/S for minimal DOF) it should have been at waist level anyway. 907x - same as X1D - it will get there but best use manual to be sure. I also use mine on the back of a T/S with the adaptor for HC and on an Arc Body where it is best at home with Rodenstocks and zero vignetting due to the crop factor. It is a fun thing to use for architecture and landscapes and I am considering selling the Linhof 679 as this pretty much does everything (for me at least in the studio) that the Arc Body now does. The 907X is my new favorite toy for everything else, coupled with the 45, and the 80 1.9 and also with HC adapted including the 300 and it is super. IQ isn't the same as the 100MPX Hass but not all of my clients care enough to notice the difference and they are mainly agency, magazines, brochures etc. And whilst we are talking MF/AF if its fast you want don't go anywhere near Phase One.' Lastly do I use the 907X in portrait? No. but i do use a square crop afterwards as in 6x6 format. Makes me feel a bit retro.

@@iphoneupdate I loved the GFX but with 29 programmable buttons I just couldn't get my head round it - Sometimes in life you are faced with too much choice. Give kid a choice of 2 sweets and it will choose one. Send it to a sweet shop and you will be there for hours, that's it only fault, unless you are a 'scaper' on a long exposure and forget to turn it off the OIS - but I suppose you could always programme one of the 30 buttons for it!!

I recommend à chrome one as black 500 were chrome paint in black so it chip quickly.
had all 500and finally bought the first 500 C gen . I prefer the chrome lens with the dual needles to show the deep of field.
on the 500 you have 4 screw to change the visor , on the CM you just push two metal part . here is the difference.
for longer than 150 mm you need newer model with cinematic mirror to avoid the black part on top of the visor.
all the rest are the same.
glass and camera are very sturdy, back are prone to leak but it is not so expensive to fix it. first one need a manual reset of the counter ( love that ).
the hood has two model, a quick close and a very old 4 finger close one .
by the way, check serial number and years with the VHPICTURES codification.
accumate glass visor are brighter but a nightmare to make the focus . chinese made very good fake one to try. the old visor is darker but easier. just remember that it is a strong sexy camera but need a tripod.
    take a visor with a stigmoid .
if you don’t use a tripod you will get the zeiss style but not the sharpness as the mirror is like a hammer slam and the shutter is a glock first gen type trigger.
for street , mamiya or rolleiflex are far sharper with no mirror .
Start my hobby with an old 1200 from the 50’s and always keep an hassy on the shelf for friends to try it and as collectible... so nice but honestly it is an old studio tool .
You can use a leica M4-2 and get quality... very hard with an hassy.
    never sharp... on hand.
it’s cool... but not very easy and rewarding.
