This is not a Red Ryder folks; fully pumped it is 3 times the power of a Red Ryder and can be dangerous if not handled properly. Be safe out there.
I appreciate it. Surprised to see the Crosman hollow points do so well. I have killed a lot of squirrels with them, I knew they were accurate enough and could penetrate ok but I never expected them to do more damage than all of those pellets in gel. Pretty interesting, thanks for making time to record this.
Great video. The reason hollow points have a larger wound cavity is due to the pellet carrying air in their tips, and both the Crossman pellets absolutely never tumbled.
If you’ll notice on the Crossman all copper The hollow points in these pellets aren’t designed to open up, they’re designed to tear instead of slicing through the target like a round nose would. When it bounced back it created a larger wound cavity because of the badminton style design towards the rear of the projectile like a hollow point
So, I just treated myself to a new Gamo Varmint air rifle and I bought the Crossman Hollow points to go with it. I couldn't wait to try it, so I shot a 2x6 and it penetrated about an inch. I was pleasantly surprised. Today I was looking at other ammo and got some Gamo Tomahawks. While I was looking, I found your show "VERY cool". Can't wait to check out more, keep up the good work!
I can appreciate the work and effort you put into the video so good job. As a critique for next time, do a set of 3-5 pellets of each type. With one shot of each only, it's hard to draw any conclusions on performance as any single shot could be an exception rather the trend for each type. There's a wide margin of performance with pellets this small and an equally sized margin for the airgun itself. Aside from that you did good with the test and presentation. Well done.
Also, remember, the wound channel you see is the permanent wound channel, ballistics tell us that there is also a temporary channel, ballistic gel closes the temporary one but actual flesh isnt as elastic so it will show a bigger one, you can also use wet pottery clay to show the temporary channel
Exactly what I wanted to mention, if you watch your shots penetrate the gel in slowmotion you would see the actual dumping of kinetic force in the gel. But since it is elastic it will get back into shape and you only see the tunnel dug by the pellet. Awesome video, thanks!
With hollow point rounds you'll expect less penetation but more knockdown power and concussive force. In a hunting situation you'd want exactly that. I have 22 cal break barrel that produces 28ft lb at the muzzle. Hollow point are almost explosive, when I do pest control they puff birds into feathers and sometimes make large wounds. Pellets made for penetrating zip through them. So I tend to use heavier pellets too. My gamo cfx is in 177. I use JSB heavies, they knock birds hard but you need to hit vitals because 177 rifles don't carry as much energy with lighter pellets. Compared to my 22 cal spitting lead at 905ft per second with 15 grains. They can take a racoon easy with a head shot.
With air rifles it's all about shot placement. My gamo .22 can take a lot of different game. I tend to use the crossman hollow points the most because they're very consistent, the red fires are also mac trucks. For .177 gold flight is definitely my go to for clean headshots and body shots on larger animals like raccoons and groundhogs. I've put holes in thin frying pans with gold flights.
I really enjoyed seeing the exploding pellet on ballistic gel. I am thinking about buying some of those just for the hell of it.. Based on your testing I think I liked the Gamo magnum the best because they are the most similar to the old Beeman Silver Jets from 20 years ago. The Daisy Hollow Points in .22 caliber are completely different in design. Imagine a Gamo Red Fire without the plastic tip. A very deep “V” shaped hollow and super deadly on small game from 550 FPS up to 920 FPS. Very consistent and accurate. I regularly get 1/2” groups with 10 rounds at 50 yards when pushing them @ 900 FPS in most of my PCP .22 caliber rifles. Even my PCP Diana Bandit shoots them great at 30 yards holding under 3/4”. The lead is soft and the DUMP! their energy almost instantly. I hit starlings and sparrows with them out to 75-80 yards and they just crush them. Under 50 yards the birds sound like firecrackers going off and it rains meat, feathers, and body parts. Definitely one of my favorite hunting pellets for 50 yard hunting/pest control. When measuring your penetration distance with pellets in gel blocks. The pellets tend to bounce back at higher FPS due to their low overall weight. It is important to add the distance the pellet bounced back to the distance the pellet ends up in the block. That is your overall total. “Example” The crosman hollow point 7.6 grain actually traveled a total of 7.5 inches into the block.
That light / spark that you saw on the Crosman Fastflights was a phenomenon called "sonoluminescence", very surprising to see in something as small as an air rifle.. Very interesting!
I wanted to drop you a line and let you know you can use a blow dryer and it will smooth out the wrinkles on the sides of your jell block and you will be able to show more of the effects of the pellets or any ammo on your jell block especially when shooting videos for viewing
Hey also most of these are penetrating further than you think...they are getting pushed back by the amount of pressure in the wound cavity, the ones that stay together better get pushed back further, once they start to tumble they can't get pushed back as far
That gami magnum exploded maybe an inch into the gel when you watch the slowmo. Big wounds channel all the way through but didnt distort the gel permanently
If you can find them , I recommend the pba pro gold pellets. Chronographed my varmint with pba platinum and velocity was floating right around 1200-1250 . The golds netted me an average of 1600-1720.
Cracking video .Thanks ....And Yip crosman pellets in my opinion are right up there .Premier are my favourite but the hollow points will be on my list now .
Just a point that if the gun is rated for 1300 fps that is with a specific bullet weight. If you shool lighter bullets they will travel faster or slower. This can afect acuracy and drop so it is in general a good idea to shoot heavy because air rifle pellets are generaly not the best quality and therefore thend to be unstable at higher speeds then 1300 fps.
There is an actual name for the spark you see. Bullets do that when the wound cavitation collapses on its self. Interesting to see on such a small projectile.
I used to be a felony probation officer, and I often wondered if felons (after probation) who got their shit together and needed home protection, if a Co2 pellet gun would be a worthy home defense tool, since owning a firearm would be out of the question.
Wound cavitation should be looked at the separation of gel as the pellet flys through the gel … measure deviation of gel as pellet passes through keep that in mind. Nice video
I’m not sure but I believe when you get a new block of gel it you want it totally clear without the wrinkles you have to take a lighter or a torch and burn off the wrinkles like I said I’m not sure but i think I’ve saw it somewhere else and it makes since lol. @Lethal Gunner you can carefully go over the surface with a burner, then it will become more transparent
The copper pellets are a bone crusher for fair size animals. Also wash your lead pellets in dawn then dry and add a drop or 2 of 3 in 1 oil.
I'm sticking with the copper magnums.
They seem the all-around best.
Loved the video, thanx for the help. Love the intro the most, The city angels baby
Thanks I appreciate it 💯
This is gold to us!!! Thank you for this video
Thanks for watching!
Nice video
I just found this channel great content
Thanks!
You can use a hair dryer or heat gun to smooth out the wrinkles on that ballistic gel.
Gamo swarm magnum is the absolute best .22 besides a pcp that thing slaps
I’m not sure but I believe when you get a new block of gel it you want it totally clear without the wrinkles you have to take a lighter or a torch and burn off the wrinkles like I said I’m not sure but i think I’ve saw it somewhere else and it makes since lol. Just found your channel and I really enjoy it keep it up man
A+ on the ballistic penetration test; next you need to go for groupability
Hey, I love your videos, I’m a big fan! You should put a metal sheet or something in front. So the, mushroomed tumble damage goes into the gel
Thanks and yes thats a good idea im gonna try that out
MY BOYS BACK! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
yessir
I was a spark
I happens with 6.5 Creedmoor aswell it’s from the would channel expanding and shutting
Awesome video I've been wanting to see this!
I like the video, good job! I like the Crosman hollowpoint pellet a lot.
