This is one of the best instructional videos I have seen on sight pictures and scope use. I am over 70 and have been shooting most of my life and have received both military and civilian instruction.
I've just purchased a Gamo Wildcat Whisper for rats on the farm. I have been shooting rifles, handguns, and shotguns all of my life. I did not expect the learning curve involved in shooting a break barrel air rifle. I appreciate this video! I am confident that you are taking days if not weeks off of my education process, just by putting this information out there. Thank you!

I don’t know what made sense to me finally, but I just went out and re-sighted my Gamo and followed your tips and I’m hitting bullseyes at 25 yards back to back now with no problems. Thank you!
Good ... consider watching all of my videos on accuracy and pellets in our channel because that Gamo is capable of hitting bullseyes out to 40 yards and hitting paper at 65 yards. Dont forget to use good heavy pellets and spray with some lube.... for consistency and power. Dr. Russ
One little bitty thing that has helped me with some pellets is to "when you are shooting for burgers" is to make sure your pellets are round. One way to do that is to use a dapping tool.
Thank you, Dr. Russ. I'm looking to purchase my first air rifle, and been searching YT - this video of yours is tremendously helpful. Appreciate your teaching style & experience - and thanks for a great view! 😁🤙🏽
Thanks! I used TriFlow teflon spray. Another point is that parallax can be eliminated in any scope at any range by going against what we were all taught, and NOT adjusting your eye relief until you get the full sight picture. Get the full scope, then pull back a little and leave a small dark ring around the edge and keep it exactly centered it in the scope while you take aim. It becomes second nature. Works every time. Paralax drift is caused when your eye isn't aligned dead center at any other range than the scopes parralax is set for (usually 100 yards). Centering the dark ring is very sensitive and makes sure of proper alignment. Try resting your rifle in a way that you can move your head around without touching the stock while looking thru the scope. See how the crosshairs move around on the target except where the parralax is set? It's really bad at close range! Got a scope with paralax adjusment? Pull back until you get the dark ring, sight your target, move your head around in a circle that moves the dark ring around. Watch your crosshairs, start low moving your parallax adjustment up until all crosshair motion with eye position stops completely. Read the range on the paralax adjustment. That tells you pretty well what the range is to your target.
Rapid reload is critical for myself with going after squirrels. They destroy my irrigation systems and dig up my orchard. I did a test with a friend to see how many times I could shoot a can about 20 yards away while he fired and then reload and fire again. I got 6 extra shots than his two.
Joshua ..... it is good to hear from you ... and the Gamo Swarm group definitely helps the number of pellets you can shoot in short order ... Please continue to share your experiences with us.... Dr. Russ
Dr. Russ hello. I have to point something respectfully. In regards of the 10x Cartridge jamming on the Gamo Swarm Maxxim 10X 2G. You are right and wrong. Yes it jams sometimes when Low quality generic ammo is used, my mistake. I switched to Gamo, RWS or J & Bs. Never a Jam again. Use better AMO !!
Thank you for the tip Sergio M.... the real cause was brought to our attention in one of the comments ... and that was the fact that you can shoot most any ammo out of the Gamo Swarm family ... but you need to make sure that the black rubber retention band in the magazine nestles into the narrow waist line of the pellet ... and often this requires that you push some pellets in deeper with a ball point pen or whatever... thanks for sharing Sergio M ... Dr. Russ
I spent $20 on Amazon and purchased a 20g scale with .001 accuracy to weigh each pellet. You would be amazed at the huge variability in weight, especially with the Hatsan Vortex and Crosman Premium rounds. H&K has the tightest specs with almost a perfect bell curve, but amazingly they're all below the listed grain weight. I use a 7-day pill box to separate the rounds in .1 gr increments, so when I'm shooting I know I have a tight weight span.
Tom .. it is good to hear from you... another way to determine the difference in pellets is to check out the thickness of the pellet skirts ... a thin skirt is more likely to spread wider with air behind it ... trapping all of the compressed air behind it. Another with a bent skirt would be more likely to allow air to pass around it. Consider resizing your pellets with the proper resizing die... also consider using a pellet lube which helps pellets be more uniform in trapping air behind them.. Dr. Russ
@@phantomshtter And you would be wrong, because the scale comes with calibration weights that always come in right on the money. It wouldn't make sense that the scale always weighs the calibrators correctly, but somehow weighs the pellets incorrectly.
Hi Tom I was taught by a scale testing lab to look for consistency. So take your test weight with clean tweezers and measure it 10x. if it reads correctly for all 10 tests then that's good enough.

Awesome and informative video on the basics. No matter how long people have been shooting..these tips/proceedures are major principles when it comes to accuracy.
It took me 2 trips to the range with my Gamo Maxxim to sight my scope to 50 yards. I shot 3 times this week and improved every time. Thanks for the tips. I found a good number of bad pellets during the washing and tossed them. My gun seems to like the Tomahawk's the best then Red Fire. Thanks again Dr. Russ.
It is good to hear from you Jim Ferry ... air guns can be a very rewarding experience when you know how to shoot accurately... consistently ... Dr. Russ
Dr Russ another great video. You are absolutely correct on not holding that break barrel tight, for years I've been " manhandling" the stock with mixed results; now with a cradling hold my shots and groups have improved greatly. Thanks for your advice from your years of experience.
Good to hear from you again Jeff.... glad you picked out something valuable in this video so that you could regain your trust in that air rifle and enjoy it .... Dr. Russ
I was target shooting with a friend with my Umarex Ruger Airhawk. There was a slight wind coming from east and it was pushing my pellets just left of the target. So I aimed slightly to the right of the target and hit the plastick bottle I wanted to at about 15 to 2o feet out. That Airhawk is about 10 to 20 years old.

My first airgun was a Gamo shadow whisper in .17, I loved it! It was fairly accurate at 30 yards with the H&N Terminators at 7.25 grams and held 1 inch to sub 1 inch groups at 30,35 and almost 40! It's a great gun and I got almost no complaints, except. The trigger. Its awful, another thing is how loud it is, springers are VERY loud (for air rifles) and on a DCB meter it measured 106.6 and my Ruger .22 with 710 fps CCI "quiets" measured 110.5. It's starting to fall apart a tiny bit and in general I'm just looking for an upgrade, I'm leaning towards PCP but I don't want to spend over 300 for an entire setup and the way its looking I might. I'm deciding between Diana Stormrider in .22 (with .17 its nice but not so great for hunting) or the UMAREX Gauntlet. Not sure how these guns are or if anybody would recommend them but looking for some assistance. Thanks!
Thank you Dr Russ, excellent advice I just bought a jts airacuda. 25 and washing and lubing my pellets has made a tremendous difference my barrel stays alot cleaner AND the rifle seems to be a little bit quieter. Great advice! Washing is especially needed when it comes to chinese, no name pellets found of flea market. As for the open sight's sight picture, what you described is the exact reason why I hate most of the modern "fiber optics" (TruGlo and similar): typically, they are rounded, and the front one is usually too thick so they both (front one and the rear one) often cover ("mask") the target. I had never had such problem with the "old school" sights ("iron sights") mounted on any "traditional" airguns, carbines, rifles. Alas!, trendiness, fashion, glitter and glamor...

Thank you for this informative video. I have a question, please. Which of the Gamo air rifle is good for both target at the back yard as well as hunting? Thank you in advance.
Question: Do you know why Gamo won’t let you order a rifle without a scope? As you know, their scopes are low quality. I even asked them to install one of their upgraded scopes and let me pay the difference. They said I had buy the rifle remove the inferior scope, send the scope back, then they would send me the better quality scope. That doesn’t make any since to me. However, that is the ONLY way they will do it.

Dr.
Dr. Russ
I recently watched video with a dude who actually did the same thing and all the premier crossman's were really on point
The variability is in your $20 scale.😂
@@phantomshtter And you would be wrong, because the scale comes with calibration weights that always come in right on the money. It wouldn't make sense that the scale always weighs the calibrators correctly, but somehow weighs the pellets incorrectly.
Hi Tom
I was taught by a scale testing lab to look for consistency.
So take your test weight with clean tweezers and measure it 10x.
if it reads correctly for all 10 tests then that's good enough.
Perhaps there is a reason why one can relate to another so easily..Dr. Russ, greetings from one Russ M., USA, Retired.

I was target shooting with a friend with my Umarex Ruger Airhawk. There was a slight wind coming from east and it was pushing my pellets just left of the target. Thanks!

Question:
Do you know why Gamo won’t let you order a rifle without a scope? As you know, their scopes are low quality. I even asked them to install one of their upgraded scopes and let me pay the difference. They said I had buy the rifle remove the inferior scope, send the scope back, then they would send me the better quality scope. That doesn’t make any since to me. However, that is the ONLY way they will do it.
