What The Hell Happened To Ape Escape?
Вставка

- Few games can claim the sheer amount of pop-culture stature that the Ape Escape series can. Or, at least, could. The unique blend of a wacky story and setting where monkey's with helmets that accelerate their intelligence, and a very unique, yet surprisingly functional control scheme, makes the series a stand-out even today.
Ape Escape had a consistently strong showing throughout the series that spanned all the way from a late PS1 game in 1999 to a Playstation Move game in 2010, yet, Other than a few cameos in other games like Metal Gear Solid 3 and Ratchet and Clank, we haven't really seen much from the series in many years. But why would that be? Why would a series that has garnered the love and affection of millions of fans over the last 20 years suddenly just dry up? What the hell happened to Ape Escape?

The first Ape Escape had one the best OST's on the PS1.
Crumbling Castle was so good
Simple truth.
Up there with FFVIII and MGS1 imo
@@Joshpipes and Castlevania SOTN
Sorry, but I disagree. While it had its hits, a lot of it was repetitive and unintentionally eerie. The synth techno in the second set of levels kinda made me feel uncomfortable FSR.
Ape Escape was my shiiiiiiiiiieeeet. That soundtrack was 🔥
Ooo, dayum. Revisiting that.
Yes it is. And it's on spotify if ya got it😎
Number 2's moonbase soundtrack was ❤️😍
Soichi Terada is a genius. The soundtrack of AE1 and 3 are both on spotify!
ONGG
How could you not talk about one of the best videogame soundtracks ever. Helloo
I've been jamming to the first games OST all week! SO GOOD!!!
Yep. Crumbling Castle is a BOP.
@@Skrenja that's... good, _but_ I think you meant to say Cryptic Relics.
@@Skrenjaits soooo good
This was my favourite game when I was a kid and then I literally searched for this because it just pop on my mind
Been waiting for AE4 since I was 12.
I hope my grandson can enjoy the game
@opaIander Damn
Ape Escape 3 was my favorite. I loved the transformations. I'm praying they bring AE3 back as a PS2 Classic on PS4!!
same!
I was hoping they did so the game ran at a smooth framerate... But I think the metal gear parody kept the game from being ported to PS4 from licensing issues. Can't find a lot on it
I absolutely adore 3 and P&P.
Those 2 were my childhood.
Those bastards never released P&P in the uk...? whyy? I have to play it on emulator with american voices. Though they weren't that bad compared to the other voice actors they had
@@cleonumber1 Y'know in emulators you can just load the European version right? Even Japanese versions if you wanted to
The true questions would be, when they are going to make a remake of it?
Game companies finally grew a brain and decided to remake actual wanted games like crash, pyro and resident evil both 2 & 3.
Technically they remade the first game for the PSP... But it played like shit
Medieval and ratchet and clank are also very good remakes
Just need simpsons hit and run now
And Oddworld
Also shadow of the colossus
I’m a simple man. I see Ape Escape, I click on video.
I am also a fan with ape escape thats why im in this video.
Hell yea
So do i
@@unknownboi8394 same here
naah ur not ;)
Ah, Ape escape 2... The reason I begged my dad for a ps2 😂 loved this game so much, especially the lil baby monkey you got in 2 😭💖
Azura BlackHeart 3 was my favorite:)
@@yozora8848
I literally managed to play that in Sony Building while it was still Japanese. I loved it because my friends had 1 and 2 in their homes, but I forgot the name. So I just called it "Monkey Catcher" to my parents when I asked.
Thank God my mom actually found 3 lol.
Ugh yeah pipotchi is just my favourite
Oh my gosh Pipotchi is so cute!
God, they need to bring this series BAAAAAAACK :(
The series was mainly forgotten due to bad marketing and trying to keep up with times.
Lol I see you everywhere
@LuKz It was, but the marketing still sucked sadly. No matter how good the game is, if no one knows it, no one will play it. I also only knew about Ape Escape 2 by coincidence. I went to a blockbuster like store, it caught my eye and... that‘s how it was.
Oh how I yearn for a Fourth Installment that is the culmination of over 10 years of pop culture references, wacky settings and a bomb ass soundtrack, all of that turning into a pot-pourri of Monkeys making fun of the current Gen Z lifestyle like they did with the previous games for the former generations.
Yeah times have changed sadly, platformers have died a pretty hard death and often face rough reception or sales when you try to bring them back (unless you remaster or your name is Mario or Hat Kid). they were probably spamming so many experimental games at the end for that reason.
If they really put all the effort into a new game it might turn out amazing but still sell mediocre like Crash 4 did.
@@gamerguy425 ill have to add, crash 4 is a pretty mediocre game, but the remakes for the first three games sold amazingly well for a series that was flopping like a fish for 20 years
The original AE is a masterpiece and that's fact (the sequels are great too).
Sorry but the third is the best
@@GamerOfTheCentury1000 I would agree content wise but part of what made the original AE so great was how the gadgets were utilized to their maximum potential. AE2 did add a few more that were overall meh but still had the right idea (just needed better execution). 3 however feels like they didn't know how to add new inventive gadgets to the mix so it compensates with transformations which while nice undermines a lot of the gadgets that already exist and makes the game even easier than it should be so it feels more like a one time gimmick instead of something that would be built upon in a potential sequel.
@@TerrorOfTalos it makes the game fun and explore new ways to capture monkeys
@@GamerOfTheCentury1000 It's still just a gimmick that downplays potential tactics like sneaking and the other gadgets but I get it
@@TerrorOfTalos no it's not it's honestly made.the series refreshing not that same old tactic
Y'know ive always wanted to do a remastered a trilogy of Ape Escape and name it "Ape Escape The Recaptured Trilogy" good idea huh?
Ape Escape was my childhood, teenage pass-time, and my young adult fan-art illustrating. There’s something to it that always brings me back for wanting to play this game, and just make fan characters for it.
Love to see a good reboot or new sequel for it.
Are you kidding me, Ape Escape 3 was friggin awesome and its style looked so good
no
AE3 was the best in the series
Ape Escape 3 is my fav one! I didn't think it was an unpopular opinion. The gameplay is as good as it can get, the soundtrack is fire and the movies thing is just too fun
I am a simple person. I'm not asking for much. I just wish that for Ape Escape, the same treatment that Crash and Spyro had, that is a nice Trilogy Remake, of the first 3 games, was used. I really want that very much. I'd buy it right away (as I did with the Crash and Spyro Trilogies). These are games that have marked my childhood memories a lot, and I would very much like them to be brought back into vogue, with a new graphic design, and who knows, maybe with new chapters for the series.
Please Sony, bring this great series back to PS4 or PS5. There are many who want Ape Escape to return.
Love this game till today. I started playing Ape Escape on PSP. Its one of the most enjoyable title that’s really memorable. I hope they remake this game or have a sequel to this game.
One of my favourite games of ps2 era!!!! I still remember, my younger brother and i had brought the game we both played for a whole day back in 2006 I guess. We both had shared the money, where he had to take all his savings like, he had money in all his little pockets , coins and bucks and the staff's in Sony center were laughing at us, cause he droped his coins while counting, and man yeah I can't forget his English 😂 A remake would be sooo great or even a sequel maybe 🤔! Few games are meant to stay in your heart and i guess ape escape franchise is one of them♥️!!! A good memories to recall ♥️
We need an Ape Escape Trilogy with HD graphics soon.
Ape escape was my childhood, I know It Will never come back but it's still a gold memory in my mind 💖
I had only ever played the third game but remembering how good it was has made me want to hunt down the whole trilogy, especially the third one because that was the one that I played.
Everyone I ask doesn't remember this game. Hell I did not remember this game until earlier when a video showed a clip of it. It was a very fun platformer, but it was not to the level of other well known platformers such as crash bandicoot and super mario.
So they experimented and tried to make Ape Escape like all the other very popular games at the time - which failed. They should have stayed with the original formula but the fact that they didn't means gamers did not care and thus the series vanished
3 and pumped and primed were my childhood.
my dream sony exclusive game is a hyper-realistic 4k ps5 game with insane fidelity on environments that look real but with cartoonish ape escape monkeys causing chaos and messing up the vibes.
SAME!! I would ask for literally nothing else for the rest of the generation
I think the sole reason it was kinda forgotten was simply that collectathon platformers have died out in general by now (we transitioned to platformer shooters with RA&C for instance, but now everything's just shooters). that's probably why they were spamming all these experimental games to see if anything would stick.
Why would the 3rd game need more gadgets when they give you transformations? I get what you mean but the transformations does make up for the lack of gadgets. I actually prefer less gadgets just because in some games you end up not using old gadgets anymore because you get something more practical later. So a less is more kind of thing
Rayman has this problem as well although Rayman Legends is arguably one of the best 2D platformers ever. I'm not sure why companies are holding these titles back but it might have something to do with protecting their IPs from market saturation.
I remember the demo of Ape Escape in PlayStation magazine in 1999....pure magic...
I remember drawing specter so much as a kid
He was the best part, tbh.
I have only found a small handful of people that have even heard of this game, it was my childhood and I’m sad because so many people were missing out 😂☺️
trilogy remake to get people excited that apes are back and then work on ape4 would be my dream
If Ape Escape comes back I hope its with a new game and not a remaster or another spinoff
I remember playing the second game and being terrified of the bull robot. This game made me distrust monkeys for a good bit when I was a kid
Ape Escape 1, 2 and 3 were 3 of the best platformers ever and each game had an amazing soundtrack!
People grew up and did not care for the game as they once did. It is great fit for the Switch.
@Sir Galahad Exactly. The team moved on to do something else and Knack happened but the game director has expressed interest to return to this IP after Knack 2.
I used to be a playstation fan too because of games like ape escape but i haven't owned a console since ps3. Maybe i will get a ps5 if they ever did make Ape escape for it haha
RIP to the studio who made ape escape
Damn I LOVED Playing APE ESCAPE On My PSP ! Sh*t What a THROWBACK
Anyone still miss Ninja gaiden? :(
LIL VIOLET TV definitely me
No
FillerBunny NinjaShark then fuck off sir don’t reply to my comment if u don’t 😂👋🏼
That's a little rude
@@SlowdownSuuki you're not my mom... So turn that fucking off on yourself 😗
I originally played Ape Escape the year it came out. I was 7 years old.
No need for a sequel because of the number of years in between, but it'd light my day if a remake was announced...you'd make this now 28 year old happy lol.
Also, if that happens I hope to god they get the same producer and musical direction as Ape Escape 1 and 3
Me and my siblings were in a poor household and my dad was working long shifts was given a Playstation 2 with a game giving it to us which we played all the time never getting tired of it. We still have it and play it for nostalgia
A reboot of the franchise would be really awesome, blending characters, levels and gameplay from every installment! A day one buy for me!
Remakes like Crash N. Sane and Spyro Reignited were successful, and new platform games are highly expected, like Crash Bandicoot 4 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart! From a commercial standpoint, rebooting this franchise is definitely worth it!
From my perspective, even if I really love every game, the first Ape Escape was a true masterpiece , combining an awesome gameplay, a strong story, interesting characters, amazing and varied Levels, great mini-games and a wonderful soundtrack composed by the really talented Soichi TERADA!
Imagine if Ape Escape got the Crash/Spyro remaster treatment.
I remember playing ape escape 2 and 3, it was good and I loved the music.
My earliest gaming experiences were Sly Raccoon and Ape Escape 2 on the Ps2. Good times.
Right answer:
Knack happened. New IP over old IP. It didn't work out, time to move back to Ape Escape for the team.
i remember pumped and primed was the one that got me into this game. really fun party game might i add
I still hold a special place in my heart for Ape Escape 1 and 2. They're so nostalgic for me. I liked Ape Escape 3, but it wasn't as good as the first two. Now, if only they'd develop a remake of AE1, taking advantage of dualsense capabilities.
i miss these games so much
That first game... still one of the best games ever made
i miss the series, i loved playing the ape escape game. Shame we havent seen any new ape escape games recently. I would kill just a digital remastered of all 3 games like they did with spyro
I was thinking of this game a week ago, funny how a video is released on it now
im surprised theres not been a spiritual successor for the franchise like so many other classics
I think the issue with ape escape is that ape escape was Sony's flagship "kids/family friendly" IP until little big planet came around. Notice around the time that LBP came around is when ape escape really stopped releasing games. Sony shifted all attention over to LBP and gave it numerous sequels and spinoffs like ape escape once had. Now in the current era, LBP has itself been replaced by the Astro series. Astro is much like ape escape and LBP. Uses a lot of functions of the controller and was designed as kind of a showcase as to what dualsense can do, similar to how ape escape was designed as a showcase for dualshock. Just my thought.
It's a shame really. I love ape escape. It's, other than Spyro, my favorite platformer series.
My baby sitter when I was a kid showed me this game , it was my favourite playstation game hands down
can you guys do what the hell happened to pikmin?
That's a good idea I'll pass that along :)
I miss this game so much. Every one of them.
Lol this game was my childhood when the PSP had barely come out
WE NEED APE ESCAPE 4 SONY!!!
I Haven’t Even Played An Ape Escape Game *Yet I Want a fourth game*
Ape Escape could've easily been Playstation's system seller for PSP vita
I needed this
Fr❤
I think this was one of the first game that uses the right analog
Ape Escape is just another example of a franchise left dormant.
I've been following the ape escape 20th anniversary Twitter account, and in terms of a new game or remake, it has birthed NO FRUIT! It's just a bunch of shared secrets in the first game and promotional events. And after 1 year, it decided to post no more.
All my apes are gone.
This game has always felt like a fever dream. I miss it and need the roms to emulate it
just re make the 1st one and I'm sold . this game was everything to me when I was a kid
I forgot about this, but i loved the one on ps1 :') Randomly found myself here after listening to gaming soundtracks.
This game series is one of my favs of all time, Ape Escape 3 is literally my comfort game it's my fav of the three. I want more of em
Ape escape was so fun!!! Ugh take me back to the 90's
Ape escape: crash bandicoot but they sadly never recovered from the spin off situation
Ape escape was the only one that I played out of the trilogy but my god did I play the hell out of it when I was little.
Bro im a teenager an i swear NO ONE remembers this game even tho they had a PlayStation 1. Fugin loved ape escape
Does Sony own this game???
Yes, the series was created by Sony.
Ape Escape was among the first projects Sony devs made for PS1 as internal team. 2.5 years. The Legend of Dragoon took 3 years. ICO took 5 years and had to be moved to PS2 (Ueda's issue by taking too long).
Japan Studio's internal team is always splitted up into different small core teams. They are even small in full development. When something prioritize they move all manpower to that project if it's something really complicated and ambitious like an RPG. If it's like Ape Escape and a horror game they work on both in full production. That's how Japan Studio operates as internal team/product development.
RPGs will always take the entire studio to work on. Other genres can be splitted up.
If Japan Studio wants more RPGs they have to look somewhere else for external partnership among independent companies such as MediaVision, Matrix Software and now newly founded STUDIO WILDROSE.
That culture has always been with Japan Studio for 25 years. Demon's Souls and Bloodborne are good examples for that kind of 1st party partnership.
Next what happened to team buddies
I remember begging my mom to for the dual shock for just this game
Now is a perfect time to remake the first one tbh
I would totally buy a ps5 if they did an ape escape original saga remaster for it
Surprised you didn’t mention that Spike was the main character in AE and Jimmy arrived in AE 2. Also, no mention of the amazing music.
Ape escape 3 is my favorite and it’s crazy that if you look for it online today it will cost so much money
The control n game play could be very fun now
Its my first gonna catch em all XD
This was my favorite game as a child.
Omg ape escape 3 is my favorite I love the transformations
It's time for another franchise IP that should get the Spyro and Crash treatment. Remake collection!
I remember playing 2 and loving it, such great music and game feel.
I love ape academy 2 and ape escape 2
I sweat this game was a fever dream this was the boommmb back then
Ape of the Wild
Elden Ape Escape Ring
?
My first Ape Escape game was a spin-off - Ape Academy on PSP. And I loved it. I never got a chance to play Ape Escape 1, 2 or 3. I only played Ape Academy 1 & 2. Might get Ape Escape 2 on PS4
I love these games so much
I think they just did not know what direction they wanted to take the series so they did the smart move and called it quits. since AE2 AND 3 pretty much had the exact same story premise of TV stations. they could NOT have done that a 3rd time in a row.
Favorite childhood game loved it
The sad part of Ape Escape, it looked incredible in a less glossy finish and a mat finish instead. I think the early nickelodeon feeling that kinda killed it
I'm not usually for reboots, but this one would be amazing. If Sony doesn't want it, Im sure Nintendo could do something really cool with it for the switch
Why would Sony not want their own IP?
Ape escape 3 is the best in the series
What the hell happened to a lot of games from back than that could be brought back even ps3
This was the first console game I ever played (On PS1). Would totally buy it if it was remade for a newer console
I loved Ape Escape as a kid on PS1! I wish I didn’t sell it back then cause I can’t find it anywhere! Put it on the PSStore Sony! 🙏😭
Bring back Ape Escape!
