Decent video for those who are completely new to the clio 172/182. Ive owned about 8 over the years. I would say on these cars dont be put off by higher mileage ones if you can see they have clearly been looked after. Ive recently ended up with 2 dogs which although on the face of it looked ok and had lower mileage they were riddled with issues. Cut my losses in the end on my last one, the rear arches had been rolled badly and that much mud had gathered they were completely rusting through. A little bit of rust on them is nothing to worry about as these cars are 20 years old now as long as its dealt with.
I wouldn't bother getting a gearbox rebuild the price and work involved is restrictive, I went to the gearbox centre in Doncaster I think it was and they were garbage, they strung me along for so long I told them not to bother and just give me it back. Ren parts in Wigan are a good Ren breakers loads of parts and terrific service and communication.
In response to this comment if you do want to get your gearbox rebuilt all I would say is take your car to a very well regarded Renault Sport specialist who can do it all and not a gearbox specialist.
Hand on heart.... the boosted ones are very good fun and everyones opinion is different however i 100% prefer that old school n/a revvy hot hatch feeling as apose to adding a turbo.
@@roadraceretro6915 Ah I see, yeah I figured turbocharging, although a lot faster, might dilute the driving experience to some degree. Dan's supercharged 200 looks and sounds mint though!
The engines on the Clio 172/182 sound like diesels on start up when warm the temp gauge should in the middle and shouldn't move. As stated checking the steering for leaks and chunks is essential because some parts are not available anymore. As stated belts are important only use a specialist The days of picking one up for a few thousand are long gone,if you do find a good one they'll be a queue in front of you and behind you.
I wouldn't say rust is a big problem, mine is 15 years old no rust. If you want to talk problems then its gearboxes are weak, coil packs, leads, injectors, general electrics, dash lights coming on for no reason, original exhaust don't last more than 3 years, and lambda sensors. Interiors melt as do steering wheels.
To be honest not that much of a detailed review. Nothing about any of the most common faults, just a bit about rust and something about the gear gator. Nothing about electrics, the loom over the white plug area, the dash lights or the leaks they suffer from. Basically just you taking about your car.
Hi tim, electrics are mentioned, and the leaks are also covered aswel so im not sure what you watched but oil and power steering leaks are mentioned so i find that a bit odd?
@@roadraceretro6915 Water leaks - around the boot, the scuttle and the doors. Big problem on the Mk2 clios. Many people have wet carpets. You only mentioned power steering leaks because your car had one, but they are no more common on a clio that any other car. It isnt a major problem with them. Also saying the have "electrical problems" isnt helpful. Where are the faults? How do you check them, how much to fix them? You might as well rename the video, "talking vaguely about my car for a few minutes". If you are going to review cars do it properly or dont bother.
@@roadraceretro6915 You can't buy PAS pipes anymore even if you do find a leak in one or new steering racks. Also you can't buy NSF wishbones or drive shafts..A place where you can't check for rust when buying is behind the back seat side panels ,they can rust from the inside without anyone knowing.( A new Clio V6 owner recently found this out) there's two drain holes near the rear jacking points these can become blocked and condensation inside the rear side panels can't drip out. Most owners will find rust but a wire brush,Hydrate-80 and Dynax-S50 will solve the problem( put foot long cheese and pineapple stick in the holes before any treatment) .Bilt Hammer is a Clio 172/182 owners best friend. Also check around any sealant for breaks, particularly under rear bumper( near the exhaust) water can get trapped and rusts under the sealant.

Would be cool to hear your thoughts on how these stock NA clios compare to the turbocharged ones, like that black 182 in your other video. Cheers!

Where's your Cup front splitter? Could use a Skoda Fabia one at under £20 :)

Or believe me. Rust can be a big problem. Seen plenty now

Thank you for the comment.🤙👍
Sorry but after testing one against my old Williams, the older car wasn't called greatest hot hatch ever made for nothing...
Opinions are great, we all have them, i guess everyones perception can be different. Either way they are both awesome hatches.
@@roadraceretro6915 may have been a bit over passionate there with my comment but i bloody loved that old car 😊👍
@@patrickbateman7122 hahahah passion is good. Never loose it.
